The control objective is to both minimise the economic cost of importing energy into the system as well as providing the service of smoothing the profile of the electrical energy imported thus levelling the load and reducing peak demand. The capabilities of the approach are demonstrated by its application to a representative case study based on two buildings at the University of Manchester. Results show that model predictive control is capable of simultaneously addressing minimisation of economic cost as well as smoothing the electrical energy import.

The main feature of the proposed model is the decomposition of weekly load observations into two independent components: trend line and seasonal variations. The trend line is described by the combination of the polynomial regression and the first-order autoregressive model. The parameters of this model are estimated with the aid of the generalized least-squares method. The seasonal component is modeled via a discrete model, where the weather sensitive cycle is separated from the weather insensitive one. A linear regression model is further proposed in order to associate weather sensitive variations with the exogenous weather variable (temperature). This procedure enabled a simple and efficient convolution of all load components into a single forecasting model. The whole methodology is verified on a real-life example of the peak-load consumption within the power system of former Yugoslavia.

Their potential may be further extended by using them in combination with injection of a dry sorbent to remove acid gases and other chemical contaminants. A crucial factor in their successful utilisation is the ability of the cleaning pulse to remove the deposited cake effectively from the filter surface. In this study, laboratory experiments have been carried out using a single ceramic candle filter. The non-steady-state behaviour of the filter in the initial period of filtration was followed. ‘Patchy’ cleaning of the filter was observed and is consequently identified as the major cause of the inefficiency of filter cleaning indicated by the measured residual pressure drops. A simple correlation has been proposed to determine the cleaned fraction from pressure differences as a measure of the efficiency of cleaning. The conditioning curves have been successfully simulated using a recently developed probabilistic model and it has been shown that the model can also be applied to simulate the experimental results obtained in a pilot plant operating at high temperatures. The modelling results are consistent with the experimental observation that patchy cleaning with a thin residual dust layer in the cleaned areas can explain the conditioning behaviour.

Artículos en revistas Numerical models of transmission-constrained electricity markets are used to inform regulatory decisions. How robust are their results? Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. The latter is particularly attractive as, instead of constraining energy flows within each building, it enables the production and consumption of energy in the most attractive locations (e.g., in buildings that can accommodate photovoltaic panels). The proposed methodology is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and demonstrated with a real UK district comprising internal electricity and heat networks and several buildings. The results highlight the attractiveness of optimising multiple energy vectors, particularly in light of energy exchanges between buildings, in economic and environmental terms.

Abstract Water transport control is the major issue of direct methanol fuel cell. High water flow rates through the fuel cell imply extra water feeding at the anode and flooding at the cathode. In the present work, water transport and flooding in the direct methanol fuel cell are investigated through both experimental and modeling analyses and an interpretation of such phenomena is proposed. The model is validated on the experimental data of two different fuel cells in an extensive range of operating conditions. The analysis elucidates that water transport through the cathode diffusion layer is determined by vapor diffusion, slightly affected by current density, and by liquid water permeation proportional to current density, that occurs when liquid pressure in the electrode exceeds a threshold value. To simulate the effects of cathode diffusion layer flooding two mechanisms must be considered simultaneously: superficial pore obstruction, proportional to liquid water concentration in cathode channel, and bulk pore obstruction, proportional to liquid water permeation. The modeling analysis proposes the correlations to reproduce the effects of cathode flooding and permits to discuss the onset and magnitude of such phenomenon and the influence of micro-porous layer.

R.; Glynn, S.; Mancarella, P.;A systematic resilience and flexibility analysis of future power systems to address the impacts of climate change and Renewable Energy penetration is becoming increasingly important, as it is expected to have a great effect on the demand and supply portfolios. Depending on the intrinsic characteristics of each power system, different aspects have to be considered in the analysis since this cannot be universal for all power systems. To highlight this, the paper presents two different case studies pertaining to the Great Britain and Cyprus networks respectively. The control objective is to both minimise the economic cost of importing energy into the system as well as providing the service of smoothing the profile of the electrical energy imported thus levelling the load and reducing peak demand. The capabilities of the approach are demonstrated by its application to a representative case study based on two buildings at the University of Manchester. Results show that model predictive control is capable of simultaneously addressing minimisation of economic cost as well as smoothing the electrical energy import.

The main feature of the proposed model is the decomposition of weekly load observations into two independent components: trend line and seasonal variations. The trend line is described by the combination of the polynomial regression and the first-order autoregressive model. The parameters of this model are estimated with the aid of the generalized least-squares method. The seasonal component is modeled via a discrete model, where the weather sensitive cycle is separated from the weather insensitive one. A linear regression model is further proposed in order to associate weather sensitive variations with the exogenous weather variable (temperature). This procedure enabled a simple and efficient convolution of all load components into a single forecasting model. The whole methodology is verified on a real-life example of the peak-load consumption within the power system of former Yugoslavia.

Their potential may be further extended by using them in combination with injection of a dry sorbent to remove acid gases and other chemical contaminants. A crucial factor in their successful utilisation is the ability of the cleaning pulse to remove the deposited cake effectively from the filter surface. In this study, laboratory experiments have been carried out using a single ceramic candle filter. The non-steady-state behaviour of the filter in the initial period of filtration was followed. ‘Patchy’ cleaning of the filter was observed and is consequently identified as the major cause of the inefficiency of filter cleaning indicated by the measured residual pressure drops. A simple correlation has been proposed to determine the cleaned fraction from pressure differences as a measure of the efficiency of cleaning. The conditioning curves have been successfully simulated using a recently developed probabilistic model and it has been shown that the model can also be applied to simulate the experimental results obtained in a pilot plant operating at high temperatures. The modelling results are consistent with the experimental observation that patchy cleaning with a thin residual dust layer in the cleaned areas can explain the conditioning behaviour.

Three research groups used the same data set for the northwest Europe power market as input for their models. Under competitive conditions, the results coincide, but in the Cournot case, the predicted prices differed significantly. The Cournot equilibria are highly sensitive to assumptions about market design (whether timing of generation and transmission decisions is sequential or integrated) and expectations of generators regarding how their decisions affect transmission prices and fringe generation. The latter is particularly attractive as, instead of constraining energy flows within each building, it enables the production and consumption of energy in the most attractive locations (e.g., in buildings that can accommodate photovoltaic panels). The proposed methodology is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and demonstrated with a real UK district comprising internal electricity and heat networks and several buildings. The results highlight the attractiveness of optimising multiple energy vectors, particularly in light of energy exchanges between buildings, in economic and environmental terms.

Abstract Water transport control is the major issue of direct methanol fuel cell. High water flow rates through the fuel cell imply extra water feeding at the anode and flooding at the cathode. In the present work, water transport and flooding in the direct methanol fuel cell are investigated through both experimental and modeling analyses and an interpretation of such phenomena is proposed. The model is validated on the experimental data of two different fuel cells in an extensive range of operating conditions. The analysis elucidates that water transport through the cathode diffusion layer is determined by vapor diffusion, slightly affected by current density, and by liquid water permeation proportional to current density, that occurs when liquid pressure in the electrode exceeds a threshold value. To simulate the effects of cathode diffusion layer flooding two mechanisms must be considered simultaneously: superficial pore obstruction, proportional to liquid water concentration in cathode channel, and bulk pore obstruction, proportional to liquid water permeation. The modeling analysis proposes the correlations to reproduce the effects of cathode flooding and permits to discuss the onset and magnitude of such phenomenon and the influence of micro-porous layer.

R.; Glynn, S.; Mancarella, P.;A systematic resilience and flexibility analysis of future power systems to address the impacts of climate change and Renewable Energy penetration is becoming increasingly important, as it is expected to have a great effect on the demand and supply portfolios. Depending on the intrinsic characteristics of each power system, different aspects have to be considered in the analysis since this cannot be universal for all power systems. To highlight this, the paper presents two different case studies pertaining to the Great Britain and Cyprus networks respectively. Firstly, the resilience of the Great Britain transmission network to future demand and supply scenarios (2020, 2030 and 2050) is evaluated using a reduced version of the current Great Britain transmission network. Subsequently, the future flexibility requirements of the isolated network of Cyprus are appropriately benchmarked against future energy mix scenarios that involve conventional generation and renewable energy penetration.
