Effect of surface hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of printed coatings on photocatalytic disinfection was studied by means of (i) drinking water contaminated with natural consortia of fecal bacteria (gram-negative: Escherichia coli and total coliforms; gram-positive: Enterococci), and (ii) seawater containing pathogenic gram-negative bacteria (Vibrio owensii, Vibrio alfacsensis and Vibrio harveyi). Inactivation of gram-negative bacteria in drinking water with fecal contamination by solar photocatalysis was slightly more efficient than solar disinfection, while for gram-positive bacteria similar efficiency was observed. These results, in combination with observed release of titanium from coatings (detected by means of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer), indicate that TiO2/SiO2 needs further improvements for solar photocatalytic disinfection of drinking water. Efficiency of seawater disinfection towards gram-negative Vibrio spp. (Vibrio owensii, Vibrio alfacsensis and Vibrio harveyi) was significantly enhanced when TiO2/SiO2 coatings were used under natural solar light. Moreover, hydrophobic thin films led to faster Vibrio spp. inactivation as compared to hydrophilic ones, which was attributed to higher bacteria adhesion on hydrophobic coatings. However, decrease of photocatalytic activity of hydrophobic TiO2/SiO2 coatings was observed after ten experimental cycles mainly due to deposition of salts on the surface of photocatalyst. Generally, results of this study suggest that autochthonous bacteria such as Vibrio spp. in seawater are significantly more resistant to solar disinfection in comparison with not autochthonous bacteria such as Escherichia coli, total coliforms and Enterococci in contaminated drinking water.

Abstract The dynamics of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Cross sections are measured as functions of a variety of observables, including angular correlations and invariant masses of the objects in the final state, γ + jet + jet. Measurements are also performed in phase-space regions enriched in each of the two underlying physical mechanisms, namely direct and fragmentation processes. The measurements cover the range of photon (jet) transverse momenta from 150 GeV (100 GeV) to 2 TeV. The tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Sherpa are compared with the measurements. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions describe the data adequately in shape and normalisation except for regions of phase space such as those with high values of the invariant mass or rapidity separation of the two jets, where the predictions overestimate the data.

Koubogiannis;Abstract Miniature energy harvesting devices are increasingly used in various fields. For example, Wireless Sensor Networks have recently made great progress in many applications. However, their main drawback, i.e. the limited duration of operation, poses the requirement for an effective way to recharge their batteries. In this context, the presentwork focuses on the study of micro-energy harvesting from flow by exploiting vortex shedding behind bluff bodies, in order to cause oscillations to a piezoelectric film and generate the required electrical power. To this end, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool is validated on a particular miniature device configuration proposed in the literature and implemented for the numerical simulations of flow around bluff micro-bodies in a very small channel. Aiming to enhance vortex shedding, parametric studies corresponding to different bluff body shapes and arrangements for a fixed Reynolds number are performed, the main parameters involved in the phenomenon are highlighted and the potential for vortex shedding exploitation is qualitatively assessed.

In this article is presented the preliminary evaluation of the performance of radiation transmission of glass block, used in support of photovoltaic cells, investigating different internal surface points of the block, which are subject to different shading during daylight hours. The aim is to establish how the edging setting, the only opaque element, can reduce the amount of light radiation during the day, introducing in this way a reduction of efficiency of the entire generation system. The generation system can be based on traditional photovoltaic cells or on the most suitable dye sensitized solar cells. An experimental measurement setup employing a microprocessor-based instrument has been created and a set of measures have been carried out. The measures prove that the shading effect at different irradiation angles do not affect significantly the lighting over the PV cell.

Trikouvertis; Despina Vamvuka; George Alevizos; Antonios Stratakis; D. Pentari;Abstract In view of the abundance of residues from vineyards and processing industry in Mediterranean countries and their importance for local energy production, fly and bottom ashes from lab-scale fluidized bed experiments were evaluated as a function of operational parameters, in terms of system performance, environmental impact and potential uses. Ashes of raw fuels and their blends were characterized by physical, chemical, mineralogical and thermal analyses. Under the fluidized bed conditions of the tests, no slagging/fouling occurred and fly ashes were rich in Ca, K, P and Sr minerals. Combustion temperature and residence time governed the fate of major ash elements in the system, whereas fuel loading influenced trace element partitioning to a greater extent. Fly or bottom ashes could be used as secondary building materials, or for road construction. Grape husks fly ash could be used as a soil ameliorant. The environmental impact of these ashes upon land recycling or management strategies is expected to be low.

Summarization: This thesis’s aim is to create an Atlas for Chania and Rethymno ’s Prefectures, which will spatially depict all Renewable Energy Sources ‘s stations of the study area. In particular, all types of energy that are produced by Renewable Sources in both prefectures of interest, as well as the permits granted or pending for these stations, have been investigated. The cartographic process is the only way of expressing the relation between man and spatial data. A map is a tool, with various types of information can be gathered and examined by mapping the area and analyzing it by the cartographer based on relevant data. Two of the world’s main problems, today, are the gradual reduction of conventional energy sources and the increase in environmental pollution from their use. Renewable Energy Sources are probably the most important way to solve these two crucial environmental problems. By the end of this paper, an attempt will be completed to spatially illustrate the contribution of the regions of Chania and Rethymno in the production of green energy. The content of this Atlas can be used as a database or a tool of analysis in future energy studies. Keywords: Mapping, Atlas, Prefecture of Chania, Prefecture of Rethymnon, Renewable Energy Sources, Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Bakos;Abstract This paper deals with the thermal analysis and the auxiliary electrical energy saving in a passive-solar-heated residence. The particular residence is using an attached sunspace of inclined walls and roof and an electrically heated thermal storage floor as backup to satisfy the heating requirements. The thermal analysis and the corresponding electrical energy saving are determined using three different methods which are applied for thermostatically controlled temperature regime. The first is a simplified method based on three parameters: (1) the solar/load ratio (SLR), (2) the building thermal inertia and (3) the monthly unutilizability (UU). The other methods are, namely: the UU method and the SLR method.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy compared with other interventions on pain, grip strength and disability in patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy. Data Sources: MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, PEDro, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library and clinical trial registries. Review methods: We included randomized controlled trials assessing the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy alone or as an additive intervention compared with sham or other interventions. Pain intensity, grip strength and elbow disability were used as primary outcome measures. We assessed methodological quality with the PEDro score and quality of evidence with the GRADE approach. Results: Twenty-seven studies with 1871 patients were finally included. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy reduced pain intensity at mid-term follow-up (standardized mean difference: −1.21, 95% confidence interval:−1.53, −0.89, P < 0.001) and improved grip strength at very short- (mean difference:3.92, 95% confidence interval: 0.91, 6.94, P = 0.01) and short-term follow-up (mean difference:4.87, 95% confidence interval:2.24, 7.50, P < 0.001) compared with sham treatment. However, no clinically significant results were found between comparators in all outcomes and follow-up times. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy presented clinically better compared to Laser in grip strength at short-term (mean difference:3.50, 95% confidence interval:2.40, 4.60, P < 0.001) and ultrasound in pain intensity at very-short-term follow-up (standardized mean difference: −1.54, 95% confidence interval: −2.60, −0.48, P = 0.005). Conclusion: Low to moderate certainty of evidence suggests that there are no clinical benefits of extracorporeal shockwave therapy compared to sham interventions or corticosteroid injections. Based on very-low and moderate certainty of evidence, extracorporeal shockwave therapy outperforms against Laser and ultrasound, respectively. Level of Evidence: Therapy, level 1a.

Due to the lack of research on the field of the UHI effect in minor Greek cities, this thesis presents and analyzes the results of studying the UHI phenomenon in two small cities of the Greek province, Agrinio and Ioannina. Our aim was to study the existence of the UHI phenomenon as well as to determine its intensity and its type. In order to achieve that, a network of thermal sensors and meteorological stations was set on the two cities and temperature data were collected in order to define their thermal profile. The results point severe presence of the phenomenon especially during the nocturnal hours while the intensity of the phenomenon reaches up to 3.8 οC during August in Agrinio while in Ioannina at the same period the phenomenon is softer (1.5 οC).To mitigate the problem, save energy and improve the thermal capacity of the urban buildings in cities where the UHI occurs, the use of hydrophilic materials as a layer sheathing the roof was developed, in order to control the thermal flow from the roof by evaporative cooling. Furthermore, secondary energy benefits from a possible photovoltaics roof installation were investigated. Our research included the developing of an experimental set-up of a wind tunnel where sample materials were tested, by simulating the weather conditions of the city during the summer months, exactly the period of the high UHI intensity, as well as the installation of photovoltaics on a terrace of the university. The results indicate that evaporative cooling might be a very promising method in the field of the UHI phenomenon confrontation while the installation of photovoltaics can contribute in power saving for cooling during the summer months, in addition to electricity production. Especially, groundwater is the major water source in most mining areas. However, overexploitation, competition from the communities and climate change effects have caused significant stress on the groundwater resources in many areas of the Mediterranean basin. The sustainability of mining operations is threatened as well as the uninterrupted supply of raw materials to the industry. In this work spatial estimation and analysis of groundwater stress at hydrological basin-scale in the European part of the Mediterranean region is applied using local and global datasets. Aquifer productivity index and groundwater use information at monitoring sites are extracted from the River Basin Management Plans of the European Environment Agency, while groundwater recharge is considered from the World-wide Hydrogeological Mapping and Assessment Program (WHYMAP) after validation. The processing of these data using the Self Organized Maps technique and their integration within a novel function, provide the groundwater stress index. The output of this work can be used for governance and management decisions that will improve groundwater resources availability in vulnerable areas ensuring the sustainable use from the communities and the industry.
