ZnO nano- and microstructures co-doped with Eu and Li with different nominal concentrations of Li were grown using a solid vapor method. Different morphologies were obtained depending on the initial Li content in the precursors, varying from hexagonal rods which grow on the pellet when no Li is added to ribbons to sword-like structures growing onto the alumina boat as the Li amount increases. The changes in the energy of the crystallographic planes leading to variations in the growth directions were responsible for these morphological differences, as Electron Backscattered Diffraction analysis shows. The crystalline quality of the structures was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, showing that all the structures grow in the ZnO wurtzite phase. The luminescence properties were also studied by means of both Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Photoluminescence (PL). Although the typical ZnO luminescence bands centered at 3.2 and 2.4 eV could be observed in all cases, variations in their relative intensity and small shifts in the peak position were found in the different samples. Furthermore, emissions related to intrashell transitions of Eu3+ ion were clearly visible. The good characteristics of the luminescent emissions and the high refraction index open the door to the fabrication of optical resonant cavities that allow the integration in optoelectronic devices. To study the optical cavity behavior of the grown structures, µ-PL investigations were performed. We demonstrated that the structures not only act as waveguides but also that Fabry–Perot optical resonant modes are established inside. Quality factors around 1000 in the UV region were obtained, which indicates the possibility of using these structures in photonics applications.

Most wine aroma compounds, including the varietal fraction, are produced or released during wine production and derived from microbial activity. Varietal aromas, typically defined as terpenes and thiols, have been described as derived from their non-volatile precursors, released during wine fermentation by different yeast hydrolytic enzymes. The perception of these minority aroma compounds depends on the chemical matrix of the wine, especially on the presence of majority aroma compounds, such as esters or higher alcohols. Strategies aiming to reduce the production of these masking flavors are on the spotlight of enology research as a way to better define varietal standard profiles for the global market. Using a natural white must from Verdejo variety (defined as a thiol grape variety), here we describe the analytical and sensorial impact of using, in sequential inoculations, a selected strain of Metschnikowia pulcherrima, in combination with two different Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. An increase in the levels of the thiol 4-MSP (4-methyl-4-sulfanylpentan-2-one) over its sensory threshold, together with a decrease in higher alcohol production, was observed when M. pulcherrima was used. This has an important impact on these wines, making them fruitier and fresher, always preferred by the sensory panel.

Inmaculada García‐Moreno in OpenAIREAbstractThe search for long‐lived red and NIR fluorescent dyes is challenging and hitherto scarcely reported. Herein, the viability of aza‐BODIPY skeleton as a promising system for achieving thermal activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) probes emitting in this target region is demonstrated for the first time. The synthetic versatility of this scaffold allows the design of energy and charge transfer cassettes modulating the stereoelectronic properties of the energy donors, the spacer moieties and the linkage positions. Delayed emission from these architectures is recorded in the red spectral region (695–735 nm) with lifetimes longer than 100 μs in aerated solutions at room temperature. The computational‐aided photophysical study under mild and hard irradiation regimes disclose the interplay between molecular structure and photonic performance to develop long‐lived fluorescence red emitters through thermally activated reverse intersystem crossing. The efficient and long‐lasting NIR emission of the newly synthesized aza‐BODIPY systems provides a basis to develop advanced optical materials with exciting and appealing photonic response.

Beatriz Sarriá in OpenAIREObesity is a worldwide epidemic, making it crucial to understand how it can be effectively prevented/treated. Considering that obesity is a multifactorial condition, this article carried out a baseline cross-sectional study of the variables involved in the disorder. Eighty-four subjects with overweight/obesity were recruited. Dietary baseline information was obtained by analysing three 24 h recalls. Resting metabolic rate was measured using indirect calorimetry, physical activity was measured through accelerometry, cardiometabolic parameters were determined in blood samples and body composition via anthropometry and bioimpedance. A univariant and multivariate exploratory approach was carried out using principal component analysis (PCA). Large inter-individual variability was observed in dietetic, biochemical, and physical activity measurements (coefficient of variation ≥ 30%), but body composition was more uniform. Volunteers had an unbalanced diet and low levels of physical activity. PCA reduced the 26 analysed variables to 4 factors, accounting for 65.4% of the total data variance. The main factor was the “dietetic factor”, responsible for 24.0% of the total variance and mainly related to energy intake, lipids, and saturated fatty acids. The second was the “cardiometabolic factor” (explaining 16.8% of the variability), the third was the “adiposity factor” (15.2%), and the last was the “serum cholesterol factor” (9.4%).

Rural telecommunications projects in developing regions have a long history of unsuccessful experiences due to the complexity of such projects: Practically none of the dimensions of integral sustainability are straight forward in such projects. When sustainability becomes a priority, it is difficult for traditional alliances of development to account for all critical success factors. In the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, some institutions have developed rural telecommunications projects along the Napo River during the last 10 years. The experience has shown at each stage what aspects of sustainability were not taken into account because the partners involved did not have all the needed capacities, and this has made the alliances of partners evolve in a sustainability-driven manner. This paper analyzes these cases and assesses how sustainability has evolved in relation to the structure of such alliances.

AbstractBACKGROUNDThe Kei apple is a tree found on the African continent. Limited information exists on the effect of alcoholic and acetous fermentation on the phytochemicals of Kei apple. The fruit has increased concentrations of l‐malic, ascorbic, and phenolic acids among other compounds. Juice was co‐inoculated with Schizosaccharomyces pombe (Sp) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc) to induce alcoholic fermentation (AF). Acetous fermentation followed AF, using an acetic acid bacteria (AAB) consortium.RESULTSSaccharomyces cerevisiae + Sp wines and vinegars had the highest pH. Total acidity, soluble solids and l‐malic acid decreased during AF and acetous fermentation, and was highest in Sc wines and vinegars. Volatile acidity (VA) concentration was highest in Sp vinegars but was not significantly different from Sc and Sc + Sp vinegars.Gallic acid was highest in Sp wines and vinegars, whereas syringic acid was highest in Sc wines and vinegars. The Sc + Sp wines were highest in caffeic, p‐coumaric, and protocatechuic acids. Schizosaccharomyces pombe vinegars were highest in caffeic and p‐coumaric acids. Highest concentrations of ferulic and sinapic acids were found in Sp and Sc wines, respectively. Chlorogenic acid was most abundant phenolic acid in both wines and vinegars.CONCLUSIONSaccharomyces cerevisiae + Sp and Sc fermentation had a positive effect on most phenolic acids; Sc + AAB had an increased effect on syringic and chlorogenic acids, whereas Sp + AAB resulted in an increase in gallic, caffeic, and p‐coumaric acids. The AAB selected had minimal performance with respect to VA production in comparison to commercial vinegars. Acetic acid bacteria selection for acetous fermentation should therefore be reconsidered and the decrease of certain phenolic acids during acetous fermentation needs to be investigated. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Ibáñez in OpenAIRESoil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are a relevant contributor to the global warming potential of Mediterranean agro-ecosystems and therefore should be accurately quantified. Here, we investigated the quantitative relevance of considering postharvest N2O measurements when calculating annual soil N2O emissions from herbaceous crops (excluding rice). Data from 25 studies conducted in Mediterranean climates were compiled from a variety of crops and cropping systems, soil types, tillage practices, and nitrogen (N) fertilizer management practices. The differences between cumulative N2O emissions in the cropping period (preharvest emissions) and in the postharvest period were evaluated through a meta-analysis, as were the maximum N2O peaks in both periods and the resultant N2O emission factors (EFs). The relative contribution of the postharvest period to total cumulative N2O emissions was a mean 26%, but showed high variability. The average N2O EFs in the field experiments included in this study were 0.21% and 0.27% when not considering and when considering the postharvest period, respectively. The relative and absolute contribution of postharvest emissions was significantly greater for winter cereals than for either horticultural crops or maize. The maximum preharvest fluxes were higher than the maximum postharvest fluxes in 72% of the observations, but notable postharvest N2O peaks after soil rewetting were obtained in some studies. On average, postharvest emissions in nonfertilized plots were similar to those in fertilized winter crops. Other factors such as N source (greater relevance for organic fertilizers, particularly in summer crops), N rate, tillage intensity and soil texture significantly affected the amount of postharvest emissions. Taking measurements during the postharvest period in Mediterranean cropping systems are encouraged in studies that include winter crops, use of organic fertilizers or have unbalanced N rates. Our results may contribute to improving N2O measurement protocols and to re-evaluating N2O EFs in Mediterranean and semiarid areas.
