Nature has provided a number of water resources such as surface water for instance rivers, lakes, springs, ground water and so on. By artificial means, man has created water storage systems such as excavated dams, check dams, reservoirs, tanks etc., to meet the basic water requirements throughout the year. But ever-growing population and poor water management skills of individuals have driven the globe towards serious water crisis. Solar distillation fills the gap between water scarcity and water productivity and remains one of the simplest methods of producing pure drinking water. Though many models in solar stills are being used across the globe, tilted wick type still excels with outstanding performance in the production of pure water. In this review, an attempt has been made in particular to study the factors that are involved in increasing the performance of tilted wick type solar distillation stills. This review covered the initiatives taken from the year 1985 being the first initiative in tilted wick type model to final tilted wick model on 2020 based on published articles.

Someshwar Pola in OpenAIREAbstract Two multi-chromophoric hybrid small molecule organic materials (ICTH1 and ICTH2) with D-π-A architecture were synthesized and their applicability as hole transporting materials for perovskite solar cells was explored. The strong electron-donating dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole (D) and electron-accepting dicyanovinylene (A) moieties impart high intramolecular charge transfer nature to these materials and eliminates the need of additives or dopants during the fabrication of solar cell devices. Both ICTH1 and ICTH2 have deep HOMO level compared to spiro-OMeTAD and is advantageous to produce high Voc values. Hole transporting ability of ICTH1 and ICTH2 is ascertained by fabricating OFETs. Compared to spiro-OMeTAD, both ICTH1 and ICTH2 showed one order higher hole mobility. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with conventional architecture of FTO/Meso-TiO2/MAPbI3/HTM/Ag are fabricated using ICTH1 and ICTH2 as hole transporting and the simplest MAPbI3 as perovskite materials. PSCs with ICTH2 and ICTH1 HTMs, showed power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.75% and 17.91% with active area of 2.04 and 2.18 cm2, respectively. Under the similar conditions, PSCs with spiro-OMeTAD HTM showed 14.74% PCE with active area of 1.84 cm2. Even after 40 days, solar cell devices with ICTH2 showed superior performance (PCE of 16.08%) over the spiro-OMeTAD devices (PCE of 6.77%). Apart from the superior device performance, other prominent factors like synthetic simplicity, dopant-free nature and low production cost make ICTH1 and ICTH2 as potential alternatives to spiro-OMeTAD for using as HTM in PSCs.

The effect of the reflection of the solar radiation at the bottom of the pond on the seasonal performance of the pond has been studied using a three zone model. The spectral reflectivity of dirt and common salt were measured in the laboratory and used in the analysis. The results obtained from the analysis show that the presence of dirt at the bottom of the pond does not affect the performance of the pond substantially. On the other hand, the presence of undissolved salt at the bottom of the pond results in substantial deterioration of the pond performance.

Manoj Kumar in OpenAIREAbstract The present work reports an experimental study for the direct determination of broad range of performance indicating parameters of polycrystalline silicon solar cell by using direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) characterization techniques. The DC characterization technique is employed to obtain the characteristic features of solar cell like fill factor, efficiency, series resistance and ideality factor. The AC characterization technique provides resolved electrical response of the resistances and capacitances of p–p+ (back surface field) and n+–p junctions, series resistance of the solar cell as well as the lifetime of minority charge carriers. The current density–voltage (J–V) characteristics demonstrate the existence of non-linear shunt paths and higher charge recombination for a less efficient polycrystalline silicon solar cell. The impedance spectroscopy results reveal that a low fill factor observed for less efficient silicon solar cell is due to the hindrance of charge carriers in active layer and low Fermi level degeneracy at Aluminium/Silicon (Al/Si) interface. The obtained DC and AC parameters and their underlying mechanisms are also examined using the proposed theoretical model. The results presented here demonstrate that the DC technique coupled with AC characterization technique can be quantitatively utilized for the investigation of unexplored fundamental and applied aspects of silicon solar cells.

Despite this, many key properties including soiling rates, PM source contributions, physical and optical properties of the deposited particles, and the impact of rain and relative humidity (RH) are not well understood. With this in mind we conducted a field study in Gandhinagar, India. Our approach combines soiling monitoring with a reference station and a low-cost digital microscopy system, sample collection for mass loading information, glass sample slides for size resolved soiling impacts, and monitoring of rain, RH, and panel temperature for insight into meteorological impacts on cleaning and soiling rates. Results indicate soiling reduces PV energy production by 0.37 ± 0.09% day−1. The low cost ( 90% of deposited mass loading is from particles > 5 µm in diameter, with > 50% of the soiling impacts estimated to be from particles

Hemachandra Gudimindla in OpenAIREAbstract An accurate model of photovoltaic (PV) panel is indispensable for simulations studies. In general, the PV circuit parameters for simulation studies are extracted from the manufacturer’s data sheet under different environmental conditions. The PV characterizing equations are nonlinear and requires a more involved computation. This paper presents a fast convergent third order Newton-type method to solve such nonlinear equations and thereby, to accurately parameterize any of the possible PV circuit models. The applicability and suitability of the proposed method are demonstrated through modeling of multi and mono-crystalline PV cells. Further an algorithm to evaluate the efficacy of the available methods and the proposed method is presented. PV characteristics of the suitable circuit model at various levels of temperature and irradiation are also examined. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed method is comprehensively assessed through comparison with the most recent and available effective techniques by considering various performance indices based on current-voltage, power-voltage curves and experimental data is carried out.

Hussein A. Kazem in OpenAIREAbstract A grid-connected photovoltaic system was tested and investigated for the entire year under desertic weather exhibited. The system contains 1.4 kW PV and 1.7 kW inverter —the data was measured every second and used to model and evaluate the system performance. However, dust is one of the essential parameters that affect grid-connected photovoltaic performance, yield, and profitability. In this paper, a proposed model has been takes into consideration the dust impact on grid-connected photovoltaic performance in a novel way. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed model precisely anticipated the system performance and validated through experimental results. However, it is found that the photovoltaic, inverter, and performance efficiencies are 10.80%, 94.00%, and 73.00%, respectively. Besides, the average yield factor is 141.39 kWh/kWp, and capacity factor is 19.64%. It concluded that the system productivity in Oman is within the prospected rate. The information in this paper is valuable for investors, researchers, and engineers interested in grid-connected photovoltaic and dust impact in Oman and neighboring countries.
