Current evidence on the energy savings that accrue from commercial building energy standards is based on engineering simulations, which do not account for realized behaviour once a standard is actually adopted. This paper uses quasi-experimental variation in commercial building energy standard adoptions to estimate their effect on realized electricity consumption and cost-effectiveness. In states induced by EPAct to adopt an energy standard where all new nonresidential construction was erected under a commercial standard, electricity consumption per service worker is lower by about 12%, and total commercial electricity consumption is lower by 10%. Including early adopters and never-adopters to the analysis leads to a downward bias in the treatment effect. The realized electricity savings in the EPAct states represent three quarters of predicted simulated savings, and electricity saved in 2010 came at a cost of approximately 7.7 cents per kWh.

W. Swift; The solution of an electric circuit problem is only valid if the circuit elements have been validly modelled. The iron-cored coil is a common nonlinear circuit element, especially in power system circuits, where the iron core is laminated grain-oriented silicon-iron sheet. This paper attempts to show that eddy-current loss modelling in such a core is at least as important as hysteresis loss modelling, and demonstrates the accuracy of linear modelling of the eddy-current effect. If the circuit analyst has confidence in this complete model he can then decide which aspects of the model can be ignored with impunity when studying such circuit phenomena as ferroresonance, subharmonics and inrush current.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Kristen S. Cetin; Youngme Seo; Jasmeet Singh; Jongho Im;Abstract For 118 million residential housing units in the U.S., there is currently a gap between the potential energy savings that can be achieved through the use of existing energy efficiency technologies, and the actual level of energy savings realized, particularly for the 37% of housing units that are considered residential rental properties. Additional quantifiable benefits are needed beyond energy savings to help further motivate residential property owners to invest in energy efficiency upgrades. This research focuses on assessing the adoption of energy efficient upgrades in U.S. residential housing and the impact on rental prices. Ten U.S. cities are chosen for analysis; these cities vary in size across multiple climate zones, and represent a diverse set of housing market conditions. Data was collected for over 159,000 rental property listings, their characteristics, and their energy efficiency measures listed in rental housing postings across each city. Following an extensive data quality control process, over thirty different types energy efficient features were identified. The level of adoption was determined for each city, ranging from 5.3% to 21.6%. Efficient lighting and appliances were among the most common, with many features doubling as energy efficient and other desirable aesthetic or comfort improvements. Then using propensity score matching and conditional mean comparison methods, the relative impact on rent charged in each city was calculated, which ranged from a 6% to 14.1% increase in rent for properties with energy efficient features, demonstrating a positive economic impact of these features, particularly for property owners. This was further subdivided into five types of energy efficiency upgrade and three housing types. Single family homes generally demanded higher premiums with energy efficient features, however there was not a consistent pattern across the types of efficient upgrades. The results of this work demonstrate that investment in energy efficient technologies has quantifiable benefits for rental property owners in the U.S. beyond just energy savings. This methodology and results can also be used in other cities and by property owners, utility companies, or others, ultimately encouraging further investment and positive economic impact in residential energy efficiency and in turn improving energy and resource conservation in the building sector.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2021Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Mohammad Ghamsari-Yazdel; Nima Amjady; Hamid Reza Najafi;Abstract In this paper, a reintegration-based multi-objective intentional controlled islanding (ICI) model is proposed to enhance resiliency of electrical power systems under catastrophic events. This remedial measure plan relies on a mixed-integer linear programming model with two objective functions including reintegration risk and total load shedding value. While ensuring that each island includes only coherent generators, the proposed multi-objective model solves the controlled islanding problem using lexicographic optimization approach. To ease the islands’ reintegration, charging reactive power, reliability, capacity, and power flow disruption of transmission lines are considered in the model. After implementation of controlled islanding, each resulted island may face temporary active/reactive load-generation imbalance, which may put the islands at the risk of frequency instability, transient voltage instability or a combination of both. The proposed model reduces these risks by modeling energy storage systems (ESSs) and static VAR compensators (SVCs) as fast corrective control actions. In addition to modeling voltage dependent loads in the controlled islanding problem, a linear island frequency response (IFR) model is proposed for frequency stability assessment. The test results of the proposed ICI model on the IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems demonstrate its performance.

The thermo-economic model uses accurate properties for the seawater, brine, pure water and vapour and is solved with an equation solver which does not require the development of a specific solution algorithm as in most previous studies. This flexible model is used to analyze the influence of the number of effects N and the temperature difference ΔT e between effects on the technical and economic performance of multi-effect desalination systems with ejector vapour compression. In particular, it is shown that the performance calculated by an earlier black-box approach is not attainable by technically and economically realistic systems. It is also shown that for each feed configuration and a given number of effects there exists an optimum value of ΔT e which minimizes the cost of the produced potable water. This last result forms the basis of a procedure that combines black-box results with the optimum value of ΔT e and can be used to select the appropriate system for any specific application.

Here, the global warming and environmental impact dimensions of the sustainability assessment methodology are examined in detail. A comparative analysis shows that a wind-battery system produces fewer potential global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, air pollution, and water pollution impacts compared to a gas-fired system. The wind-battery system generates 13% of the life-cycle GHG emissions and 22% of the life-cycle ozone-depleting substance emissions of a gas-fired power plant. Nitrous oxide contributes more than 90% of the stratospheric ozone depletion potential of gas-fired and wind-battery systems.

It has been known for a very long time that chemical energy may be converted into electrical energy by using biomass, considered a renewable energy source. In the study that is being presented here, an explanation and a presentation are offered on a one-of-a-kind hybrid system that generates dependable power and cooling by harnessing the chemical energy of biomass. An anaerobic digester takes in organic material and converts it into biomass by using the high-energy content of cow manure as fuel. The Rankin cycle is the primary engine that drives the system that produces energy, and its combustion-based byproducts are routed to an ammonia absorption refrigeration system in order to provide sufficient cooling for the process of pasteurizing and drying the milk. It is expected that solar panels might contribute to the production of sufficient amounts of power for necessary activities. The technical and financial facets of the system are both being investigated at the moment. In addition, the optimal working conditions are determined by employing a forward-thinking multi-objective optimization strategy. This method simultaneously raises the operational effectiveness to the greatest extent that is practically possible while simultaneously lowering both expenses and emissions. The findings indicate that under ideal conditions, the levelized cost of the product (LCOP), efficiency, and emission of the system are, respectively, 0.087 $/kWh, 38.2%, and 0.249 kg/kWh. The digester and the combustion chamber both have very high exergy destruction rates, with the digester having the highest rate and the combustion chamber having the second-highest rate among all of the system's components. This assertion is supported by every one of these components.

Rosen;Abstract This study develops a novel sustainability assessment methodology for energy systems using life-cycle emission factors and sustainability indicators.
