Abstract In order to assess the feasibility of utilizing renewable hydrogen as transport fuel for fuel cell vehicles, four possible low-carbon hydrogen supply routes for a hydrogen refueling station located in Shanghai are studied. Route Ⅰ and II are onsite hydrogen supply routes powered by a stand-alone or grid-connected photovoltaic (PV)-wind generation system separately. Route Ⅲ and IV are offsite hydrogen supply routes, in which hydrogen is produced by a stand-alone or grid-connected PV-wind generation system located in Qinghai Province respectively and delivered via liquid hydrogen truck to Shanghai. The microgrid system for hydrogen production is designed and optimized with the aid of HOMER Pro® software. The results show that in hydrogen production stage, Route Ⅳ shows the best economic performance, both in the total net present cost (NPC) cost and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) cost. As for the whole hydrogen supply chain, Route IV is also the most economic hydrogen supply way, the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of which is slightly lower than that of Route II. The sensitivity results show that the total LCOH cost of Route Ⅳ is feasible based on the current shorter electrolyzer's lifetime. Therefore, it indicates that nowadays, producing hydrogen from a grid connected PV-wind hybrid power system in renewable energy rich area (Qinghai Province) and delivering it via liquid hydrogen truck to a refueling station in east coast area (Shanghai) of China may be a feasible solution.

These sectors also play an important role in Malaysia's total exports. The question then is whether technological innovation, sectoral output, and exports growth have had a real impact on these two sectors, which are very important for policy-making. This paper attempts to empirically identify such relations using econometric methods, including an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing method and a dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) during 1978–2018. The results confirmed that overall long-run economic growth is the main contributor to the increase in energy consumption with a greater magnitude than in the short-run. In the long-run, an increase of 1% in economic growth leads to an increase of 4.6% and 1.1% in energy demand in agriculture and industrial sectors, respectively. Exports are the second largest contributor to energy demand in the overall economy and the agriculture sector. Finally, the technological innovation that enhances energy efficiency is only effective in reducing energy consumption in the industrial sector, which ultimately reduces emissions.

The analysis of the CBC is conducted in the context of power generation in a direct-heated (no thermal-oil loop) and dry-cooled parabolic-trough solar thermal power plant, using a control-oriented model of the CBC. Dynamic performance of the sCO2 CBC with different relative volume-ratios between the hot and cold sides of the sCO2 CBC is compared using simulations for conditions on a representative summer day. The CBC hot-to-cold side volume-ratio influences CO2 mass movement and hence power output. Increasing the hot-to-cold side volume-ratio in the CBC results in a slower, more gradual dynamic response when there are fluctuations in solar heat input and ambient air temperatures. The dynamic response characteristics of a CBC with a hot-to-cold side volume-ratio less than one are shown to differ significantly from a CBC with a volume-ratio greater than or equal to one.

We have employed the Bayer and Hanck, (2013) combined cointegration test to examine the long-run relationships between those variables as well as the autoregressive distributed lag method with structural breaks as a robustness check. The empirical findings demonstrate a long-run relationship between those variables. Hydroelectricity consumption, fossil fuel consumption, capital, financial development and globalization and its components have a positive influence on GDP in China. The findings also provide predominant evidence on the long-run feedback hypothesis between the variables. The findings suggest that policies should be implemented to increase the role hydropower in the energy mix for sustainable economic growth in the country.

The method used allowed quantification of the yield loss incurred in the transition from leaded to unleaded gasoline production and also of the additional capacity requirements of existing and new processing units. It is shown that capital investment in hydrocracking, delayed coking and distillate dewaxing facilities can substantially restore the yield.

The method used allowed quantification of the yield loss incurred in the transition from leaded to unleaded gasoline production and also of the additional capacity requirements of existing and new processing units. It is shown that capital investment in hydrocracking, delayed coking and distillate dewaxing facilities can substantially restore the yield.

The proposed method includes a machine learning model, based on a neural network, for a building heating ventilation and air conditioning system. The learned model is then applied to an optimization problem to determine the optimal management scheduling of building loads. The goal of the optimization problem is to minimize building electricity costs and reduce the overall building energy consumption during peak load hours while satisfying human comfort demand. To overcome the coupling issue between the building internal-heat-gain loads and the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system, an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the optimization problem. In each iteration, a mixed-integer linear programming technique is used to solve a sub-optimization problem for the building internal-heat-gain loads and its results are then applied to another sub-optimization problem, solved by using a particle swarm technique, for the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system. The iterative optimization algorithm stops when convergence between the optimization for the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system and the optimization for the building internal-heat-gain loads is properly reached. EnergyPlus is used to build and simulate complex buildings with multiple-thermal zones according to real-life conditions. The simulation model is also used to test and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed machine-learning model and the iterative optimization algorithm and the improvement of building energy management in terms of energy consumption efficiency, cost saving, and satisfaction of human comfort.

The paper reviews the World Bank's experience in helping governments to mitigate power shortages in Africa, South Asia, East Asia, and Latin America regions. The paper stresses the need to consider each power “crunch” on an individual basis, and describes the process used in diagnosing a shortage situation and prescribing mitigation strategies. Several brief case studies are presented, including Botswana, Brazil, Uganda, and South Africa. The political and customer-centric dimensions of power shortage mitigation are briefly described, with suggestions for minimizing the socio-economic impacts of power shortages on the urban and rural poors. The paper concludes that an integrated supply–demand portfolio approach works best, and within the portfolio a mix of market-based rationing, emergency mobilization of customer-owned generation, interruptible rates, load control, and energy efficient lighting should be sought. Although the best formulation will vary according to market structure, demand composition, and nature of the crisis, World Bank practitioners have found one program that works almost everywhere to produce fast and effective results – mass market Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) replacement programs.

The concept is derived from fin and wing motions that better adapt to varying load conditions. Previous research has provided the fluid mechanic justification of this new concept. This paper establishes a parametric relationship between an asymmetric wind turbine blade and constituent material modulus to predict the geometric response of the morphing blade for a given material characteristic. The airfoil’s trailing edge deflection is associated to a prescribed fluid exit angle via the Moment Area (MA) method. Subsequently, a mathematical model is derived to predict material deformation with respect to imparted aerodynamic forces. Results show that an airfoil, much like a tapered beam, can be modeled as a non-prismatic cantilevered beam using this well established method.

The inevitable error in estimates of battery State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) is a cause of inaccuracies towards estimating the SoP for an aged battery. To overcome this, the present study aims to propose a new approach for predicting an aged cell SoP in which no a priori knowledge of battery SoH is required and the estimation method is robust to inaccuracies of SoC estimates. Accordingly, a combined reference mode of constant-current and constant-voltage is utilized to estimate fresh cell SoP which is then adapted to various aging states using a model-less control system. The control system, which belongs to a class of fuzzy logic-based controllers, benefits form a closed-loop framework leading to a more reliable and accurate SoP estimate. For verification, an experimental setup comprised of fresh and aged LiFePO4 cell samples is designed and the extracted data are utilized in a Model-in-the-Loop simulation for a hybrid electric vehicle. The results demonstrate the improved accuracy and robustness of SoP estimation while achieving a guaranteed safe operation of battery.

To overcome this, the present study aims to propose a new approach for predicting an aged cell SoP in which no a priori knowledge of battery SoH is required and the estimation method is robust to inaccuracies of SoC estimates. Accordingly, a combined reference mode of constant-current and constant-voltage is utilized to estimate fresh cell SoP which is then adapted to various aging states using a model-less control system. The control system, which belongs to a class of fuzzy logic-based controllers, benefits form a closed-loop framework leading to a more reliable and accurate SoP estimate. For verification, an experimental setup comprised of fresh and aged LiFePO4 cell samples is designed and the extracted data are utilized in a Model-in-the-Loop simulation for a hybrid electric vehicle. The results demonstrate the improved accuracy and robustness of SoP estimation while achieving a guaranteed safe operation of battery.

Abstract In order to assess the feasibility of utilizing renewable hydrogen as transport fuel for fuel cell vehicles, four possible low-carbon hydrogen supply routes for a hydrogen refueling station located in Shanghai are studied. Route Ⅰ and II are onsite hydrogen supply routes powered by a stand-alone or grid-connected photovoltaic (PV)-wind generation system separately. Route Ⅲ and IV are offsite hydrogen supply routes, in which hydrogen is produced by a stand-alone or grid-connected PV-wind generation system located in Qinghai Province respectively and delivered via liquid hydrogen truck to Shanghai. The microgrid system for hydrogen production is designed and optimized with the aid of HOMER Pro® software. The results show that in hydrogen production stage, Route Ⅳ shows the best economic performance, both in the total net present cost (NPC) cost and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) cost. As for the whole hydrogen supply chain, Route IV is also the most economic hydrogen supply way, the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of which is slightly lower than that of Route II. The sensitivity results show that the total LCOH cost of Route Ⅳ is feasible based on the current shorter electrolyzer's lifetime. Therefore, it indicates that nowadays, producing hydrogen from a grid connected PV-wind hybrid power system in renewable energy rich area (Qinghai Province) and delivering it via liquid hydrogen truck to a refueling station in east coast area (Shanghai) of China may be a feasible solution.

These sectors also play an important role in Malaysia's total exports. The question then is whether technological innovation, sectoral output, and exports growth have had a real impact on these two sectors, which are very important for policy-making. This paper attempts to empirically identify such relations using econometric methods, including an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing method and a dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) during 1978–2018. The results confirmed that overall long-run economic growth is the main contributor to the increase in energy consumption with a greater magnitude than in the short-run. In the long-run, an increase of 1% in economic growth leads to an increase of 4.6% and 1.1% in energy demand in agriculture and industrial sectors, respectively. Exports are the second largest contributor to energy demand in the overall economy and the agriculture sector. Finally, the technological innovation that enhances energy efficiency is only effective in reducing energy consumption in the industrial sector, which ultimately reduces emissions.

The analysis of the CBC is conducted in the context of power generation in a direct-heated (no thermal-oil loop) and dry-cooled parabolic-trough solar thermal power plant, using a control-oriented model of the CBC. Dynamic performance of the sCO2 CBC with different relative volume-ratios between the hot and cold sides of the sCO2 CBC is compared using simulations for conditions on a representative summer day. The CBC hot-to-cold side volume-ratio influences CO2 mass movement and hence power output. Increasing the hot-to-cold side volume-ratio in the CBC results in a slower, more gradual dynamic response when there are fluctuations in solar heat input and ambient air temperatures. The dynamic response characteristics of a CBC with a hot-to-cold side volume-ratio less than one are shown to differ significantly from a CBC with a volume-ratio greater than or equal to one.

We have employed the Bayer and Hanck, (2013) combined cointegration test to examine the long-run relationships between those variables as well as the autoregressive distributed lag method with structural breaks as a robustness check. The empirical findings demonstrate a long-run relationship between those variables. Hydroelectricity consumption, fossil fuel consumption, capital, financial development and globalization and its components have a positive influence on GDP in China. The findings also provide predominant evidence on the long-run feedback hypothesis between the variables. The findings suggest that policies should be implemented to increase the role hydropower in the energy mix for sustainable economic growth in the country.

The proposed method includes a machine learning model, based on a neural network, for a building heating ventilation and air conditioning system. The learned model is then applied to an optimization problem to determine the optimal management scheduling of building loads. The goal of the optimization problem is to minimize building electricity costs and reduce the overall building energy consumption during peak load hours while satisfying human comfort demand. To overcome the coupling issue between the building internal-heat-gain loads and the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system, an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the optimization problem. In each iteration, a mixed-integer linear programming technique is used to solve a sub-optimization problem for the building internal-heat-gain loads and its results are then applied to another sub-optimization problem, solved by using a particle swarm technique, for the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system. The iterative optimization algorithm stops when convergence between the optimization for the building heating ventilation and air conditioning system and the optimization for the building internal-heat-gain loads is properly reached. EnergyPlus is used to build and simulate complex buildings with multiple-thermal zones according to real-life conditions. The simulation model is also used to test and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed machine-learning model and the iterative optimization algorithm and the improvement of building energy management in terms of energy consumption efficiency, cost saving, and satisfaction of human comfort.

Maurer;Abstract This paper describes the World Bank's technical assistance and lending efforts in support of developing countries facing power shortages. The paper reviews the World Bank's experience in helping governments to mitigate power shortages in Africa, South Asia, East Asia, and Latin America regions. The paper stresses the need to consider each power “crunch” on an individual basis, and describes the process used in diagnosing a shortage situation and prescribing mitigation strategies. Several brief case studies are presented, including Botswana, Brazil, Uganda, and South Africa. The political and customer-centric dimensions of power shortage mitigation are briefly described, with suggestions for minimizing the socio-economic impacts of power shortages on the urban and rural poors. The paper concludes that an integrated supply–demand portfolio approach works best, and within the portfolio a mix of market-based rationing, emergency mobilization of customer-owned generation, interruptible rates, load control, and energy efficient lighting should be sought. Although the best formulation will vary according to market structure, demand composition, and nature of the crisis, World Bank practitioners have found one program that works almost everywhere to produce fast and effective results – mass market Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) replacement programs.

The concept is derived from fin and wing motions that better adapt to varying load conditions. Previous research has provided the fluid mechanic justification of this new concept. This paper establishes a parametric relationship between an asymmetric wind turbine blade and constituent material modulus to predict the geometric response of the morphing blade for a given material characteristic. The airfoil’s trailing edge deflection is associated to a prescribed fluid exit angle via the Moment Area (MA) method. Subsequently, a mathematical model is derived to predict material deformation with respect to imparted aerodynamic forces. Results show that an airfoil, much like a tapered beam, can be modeled as a non-prismatic cantilevered beam using this well established method.

Hairi Yazdi; H. Nehzati; O. Shekoofa;Abstract Battery State of Power (SoP) estimation is one of the most crucial tasks of the battery management system in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The inevitable error in estimates of battery State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) is a cause of inaccuracies towards estimating the SoP for an aged battery. To overcome this, the present study aims to propose a new approach for predicting an aged cell SoP in which no a priori knowledge of battery SoH is required and the estimation method is robust to inaccuracies of SoC estimates. Accordingly, a combined reference mode of constant-current and constant-voltage is utilized to estimate fresh cell SoP which is then adapted to various aging states using a model-less control system. The control system, which belongs to a class of fuzzy logic-based controllers, benefits form a closed-loop framework leading to a more reliable and accurate SoP estimate. For verification, an experimental setup comprised of fresh and aged LiFePO4 cell samples is designed and the extracted data are utilized in a Model-in-the-Loop simulation for a hybrid electric vehicle. The results demonstrate the improved accuracy and robustness of SoP estimation while achieving a guaranteed safe operation of battery.

Hairi Yazdi; H. Nehzati; O. Shekoofa;Abstract Battery State of Power (SoP) estimation is one of the most crucial tasks of the battery management system in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The inevitable error in estimates of battery State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) is a cause of inaccuracies towards estimating the SoP for an aged battery. To overcome this, the present study aims to propose a new approach for predicting an aged cell SoP in which no a priori knowledge of battery SoH is required and the estimation method is robust to inaccuracies of SoC estimates. Accordingly, a combined reference mode of constant-current and constant-voltage is utilized to estimate fresh cell SoP which is then adapted to various aging states using a model-less control system. The control system, which belongs to a class of fuzzy logic-based controllers, benefits form a closed-loop framework leading to a more reliable and accurate SoP estimate. For verification, an experimental setup comprised of fresh and aged LiFePO4 cell samples is designed and the extracted data are utilized in a Model-in-the-Loop simulation for a hybrid electric vehicle. The results demonstrate the improved accuracy and robustness of SoP estimation while achieving a guaranteed safe operation of battery.
