Municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) are essential infrastructures in any urban context, but they may be considered as a potential source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and should be coherent with European Union (EU) policy on energy efficiency. This study presents a sustainability evaluation of four Italian and Romanian MWWTPs in terms of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions using Energy Performance and Carbon Emissions Assessment and Monitoring (ECAM) tool software. The obtained results indicated that biogas recovery improved energy performances, while the largest contributions in terms of GHG emissions were in all cases caused by energy consumption and methane produced during wastewater treatment. The Romanian plants exhibited higher GHG emissions, compared to the Italian plants, mainly because of the different values of national conversion factors for grid electricity (0.41 kg CO2/kWh for Italy and 1.07 kg CO2/kWh for Romania). Two scenarios aimed at enhancing the overall sustainability were hypothesized, based on increasing the serviced population or energy efficiency, achieving significant improvements. A sustainability assessment of MWWTPs should be adopted as a useful tool to help water utilities to introduce low-energy, low-carbon management practices as well as being useful for policy recommendations.

The main focus of the study is on light intensity and photoperiods. The role of algae in CO2 removal, types of algal species used in bioreactors and conventional types of bioreactors including tubular bioreactor, vertical airlift reactor, bubble column reactor, flat panel or plate reactor, stirred tank reactor and specific type bioreactors such as hollow fibre membrane and disk photobioreactors etc. are discussed in details with respect to utilization of light. The effects of light intensity, light incident, photoinhibition, light provision arrangements and photoperiod on the performance of algal bioreactors for CO2 removal are also discussed. Efficient operation of algal photobioreactors cannot be achieved without the improvement in the utilization of incident light intensity and photoperiods. The readers may find this article has a much broader significance as algae is not only limited to removal or sequestration of CO2 but also it is used in a number of commercial applications including in energy (biofuel), nutritional and food sectors.

Machine Learning (ML) techniques are now being used very successfully in predicting and supporting decisions in multiple areas such as environmental issues and land management. These techniques have also provided promising results in the field of natural hazard assessment and risk mapping. The aim of this work is to apply the Supervised ML technique to train a model able to classify a particular gravity-driven coastal hillslope geomorphic model (slope-over-wall) involving most of the soft rocks of Cilento (southern Italy). To train the model, only geometric data have been used, namely morphometric feature maps computed on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) derived from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. Morphometric maps were computed using third-order polynomials, so as to obtain products that best describe landforms. Not all morphometric parameters from literature were used to train the model, the most significant ones were chosen by applying the Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) method. Different models were trained and the main indicators derived from the confusion matrices were compared. The best results were obtained using the Weighted k-NN model (accuracy score = 75%). Analysis of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves also shows that the discriminating capacity of the test reached percentages higher than 95%. The model, resulting more accurate in the training area, will be extended to similar areas along the Tyrrhenian coastal land.

Kazakh grassland systems are largely understudied despite being historically important for agropastoral practices. These grasslands are considered vulnerable to anthropogenic activities and climatic variability. Few studies have examined vegetation dynamics in Central Asia owing to the complex impacts of moisture, climatic and anthropogenic forcings. A comprehensive analysis of spatiotemporal changes of vegetation and its driving factors will help elucidate the causes of grassland degradation. Here, we investigated the individual and pairwise interactive influences of various social-environmental system (SES) drivers on greenness dynamics in Kazakhstan. We sought to examine whether there is a relationship between peak season greenness and its drivers - spring drought, preceding winter freeze-thaw cycles, percent snow cover and snow depth - for Kazakhstan during 2000-2016. As hypothesized, snow depth and spring drought accounted for 60 % and 52 % of the variance in the satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in Kazakhstan. The freeze-thaw process accounted for 50 % of NDVI variance across the country. In addition, continuous thawing during the winter increased vegetation greenness. We also found that moisture and topographic factors impacted NDVI more significantly than socioeconomic factors. However, the impacts of socioeconomic drivers on vegetation growth were amplified when they interacted with environmental drivers. Terrain slope and soil moisture had the highest q-values or power of determinant, accounting for ~70 % of the variance in NDVI across the country. Socioeconomic drivers, such as crop production (59 %), population density (48 %), and livestock density (26 %), had significant impacts on vegetation dynamics in Kazakhstan. We found that most of the pairwise interactive influences of the drivers exhibited bi-factor enhancement, and the interaction between soil moisture and elevation was the largest (q = 0.92). Our study revealed the optimal ranges and tipping points of SES drivers and quantified the impacts of various driving factors on NDVI. These findings can help us identify the factors causing grassland degradation and provide a scientific basis for ecological protection in semiarid regions.

This paper reports results about aluminium gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP) based solar cells, in order to define their physical properties for applications in high efficiency devices. In fact, used as top junction, AlGaInP is a promising material for the realization of high efficiency solar cells with more than three junctions. Here AlGaInP single junction solar cells grown on germanium substrates with aluminium concentration varying from 0% to 12% were studied in detail by optical and electrical methods.

This paper addresses the current knowledge on climate change impacts on mass movement activity in mountain environments by illustrating characteristic cases of debris flows, rock slope failures and landslides from the French, Italian, and Swiss Alps. It is expected that events are likely to occur less frequently during summer, whereas the anticipated increase of rainfall in spring and fall could likely alter debris-flow activity during the shoulder seasons (March, April, November, and December). The magnitude of debris flows could become larger due to larger amounts of sediment delivered to the channels and as a result of the predicted increase in heavy precipitation events. At the same time, however, debris-flow volumes in high-mountain areas will depend chiefly on the stability and/or movement rates of permafrost bodies, and destabilized rock glaciers could lead to debris flows without historic precedents in the future. The frequency of rock slope failures is likely to increase, as excessively warm air temperatures, glacier shrinkage, as well as permafrost warming and thawing will affect and reduce rock slope stability in the direction that adversely affects rock slope stability. Changes in landslide activity in the French and Western Italian Alps will likely depend on differences in elevation. Above 1500 m asl, the projected decrease in snow season duration in future winters and springs will likely affect the frequency, number and seasonality of landslide reactivations. In Piemonte, for instance, 21st century landslides have been demonstrated to occur more frequently in early spring and to be triggered by moderate rainfalls, but also to occur in smaller numbers. On the contrary, and in line with recent observations, events in autumn, characterized by a large spatial density of landslide occurrences might become more scarce in the Piemonte region.

Achieving a pinhole-free CdS layer is necessary to produce high performance thin film CdTe solar cells. Pinholes in the CdS layer can compromise the efficiency of a CdTe solar cell by causing shunts. We have investigated the use of a plasma treatment of a fluorine doped tin oxide coated glass substrate (NSG TEC 15) and its effect on pinhole reduction in thin film CdS layers grown by Chemical Bath Deposition. CdS films, <100 nm thickness, were deposited on both O2/Ar plasma cleaned and conventionally cleaned substrates. We show that the O2/Ar plasma treatment of the TEC 15 substrate reduced the water contact angle from ∼55° to less than 12° indicating a substantial increase in the surface energy. The CdS deposited on the plasma treated TEC 15 was pinhole free, very smooth and homogenous in morphology and composition. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the O2/Ar plasma treatment is effective in increasing film density and grain size. Corresponding spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements show an increase in the refractive index from 2.18 to 2.43 at 550 nm wavelength.

These rivers are characterised by different seasonal cycles reflecting the diverse climates and morphologies of the Alpine basins. However, despite the intensive and varied water management adopted in the four basins, we found common features in the trend and low-frequency variability of the spring discharge timings. All the discharge time-series display a tendency towards earlier spring peaks of more than two weeks per century. These results can be explained in terms of snowmelt, total precipitation (i.e. the sum of snowfall and rainfall) and rainfall variability. The relative importance of these factors might be different in each basin. However, we show that the change of seasonality of total precipitation plays a major role in the earlier spring runoff over most of the Alps.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) are essential infrastructures in any urban context, but they may be considered as a potential source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and should be coherent with European Union (EU) policy on energy efficiency. This study presents a sustainability evaluation of four Italian and Romanian MWWTPs in terms of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions using Energy Performance and Carbon Emissions Assessment and Monitoring (ECAM) tool software. The obtained results indicated that biogas recovery improved energy performances, while the largest contributions in terms of GHG emissions were in all cases caused by energy consumption and methane produced during wastewater treatment. The Romanian plants exhibited higher GHG emissions, compared to the Italian plants, mainly because of the different values of national conversion factors for grid electricity (0.41 kg CO2/kWh for Italy and 1.07 kg CO2/kWh for Romania). Two scenarios aimed at enhancing the overall sustainability were hypothesized, based on increasing the serviced population or energy efficiency, achieving significant improvements. A sustainability assessment of MWWTPs should be adopted as a useful tool to help water utilities to introduce low-energy, low-carbon management practices as well as being useful for policy recommendations.

The role of algae in CO2 removal, types of algal species used in bioreactors and conventional types of bioreactors including tubular bioreactor, vertical airlift reactor, bubble column reactor, flat panel or plate reactor, stirred tank reactor and specific type bioreactors such as hollow fibre membrane and disk photobioreactors etc. are discussed in details with respect to utilization of light. The effects of light intensity, light incident, photoinhibition, light provision arrangements and photoperiod on the performance of algal bioreactors for CO2 removal are also discussed. Efficient operation of algal photobioreactors cannot be achieved without the improvement in the utilization of incident light intensity and photoperiods. The readers may find this article has a much broader significance as algae is not only limited to removal or sequestration of CO2 but also it is used in a number of commercial applications including in energy (biofuel), nutritional and food sectors.

Machine Learning (ML) techniques are now being used very successfully in predicting and supporting decisions in multiple areas such as environmental issues and land management. These techniques have also provided promising results in the field of natural hazard assessment and risk mapping. The aim of this work is to apply the Supervised ML technique to train a model able to classify a particular gravity-driven coastal hillslope geomorphic model (slope-over-wall) involving most of the soft rocks of Cilento (southern Italy). To train the model, only geometric data have been used, namely morphometric feature maps computed on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) derived from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. Morphometric maps were computed using third-order polynomials, so as to obtain products that best describe landforms. Not all morphometric parameters from literature were used to train the model, the most significant ones were chosen by applying the Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) method. Different models were trained and the main indicators derived from the confusion matrices were compared. The best results were obtained using the Weighted k-NN model (accuracy score = 75%). Analysis of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves also shows that the discriminating capacity of the test reached percentages higher than 95%. The model, resulting more accurate in the training area, will be extended to similar areas along the Tyrrhenian coastal land.

G.; Giannico V.; Kussainova M.;Kazakhstan is part of the Eurasian Steppes, the world's largest contiguous grassland system. Kazakh grassland systems are largely understudied despite being historically important for agropastoral practices. These grasslands are considered vulnerable to anthropogenic activities and climatic variability. Few studies have examined vegetation dynamics in Central Asia owing to the complex impacts of moisture, climatic and anthropogenic forcings. A comprehensive analysis of spatiotemporal changes of vegetation and its driving factors will help elucidate the causes of grassland degradation. Here, we investigated the individual and pairwise interactive influences of various social-environmental system (SES) drivers on greenness dynamics in Kazakhstan. We sought to examine whether there is a relationship between peak season greenness and its drivers - spring drought, preceding winter freeze-thaw cycles, percent snow cover and snow depth - for Kazakhstan during 2000-2016. As hypothesized, snow depth and spring drought accounted for 60 % and 52 % of the variance in the satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in Kazakhstan. The freeze-thaw process accounted for 50 % of NDVI variance across the country. In addition, continuous thawing during the winter increased vegetation greenness. We also found that moisture and topographic factors impacted NDVI more significantly than socioeconomic factors. However, the impacts of socioeconomic drivers on vegetation growth were amplified when they interacted with environmental drivers. Terrain slope and soil moisture had the highest q-values or power of determinant, accounting for ~70 % of the variance in NDVI across the country. Socioeconomic drivers, such as crop production (59 %), population density (48 %), and livestock density (26 %), had significant impacts on vegetation dynamics in Kazakhstan. We found that most of the pairwise interactive influences of the drivers exhibited bi-factor enhancement, and the interaction between soil moisture and elevation was the largest (q = 0.92). Our study revealed the optimal ranges and tipping points of SES drivers and quantified the impacts of various driving factors on NDVI. These findings can help us identify the factors causing grassland degradation and provide a scientific basis for ecological protection in semiarid regions.

In fact, used as top junction, AlGaInP is a promising material for the realization of high efficiency solar cells with more than three junctions. Here AlGaInP single junction solar cells grown on germanium substrates with aluminium concentration varying from 0% to 12% were studied in detail by optical and electrical methods.

This paper addresses the current knowledge on climate change impacts on mass movement activity in mountain environments by illustrating characteristic cases of debris flows, rock slope failures and landslides from the French, Italian, and Swiss Alps. It is expected that events are likely to occur less frequently during summer, whereas the anticipated increase of rainfall in spring and fall could likely alter debris-flow activity during the shoulder seasons (March, April, November, and December). The magnitude of debris flows could become larger due to larger amounts of sediment delivered to the channels and as a result of the predicted increase in heavy precipitation events. At the same time, however, debris-flow volumes in high-mountain areas will depend chiefly on the stability and/or movement rates of permafrost bodies, and destabilized rock glaciers could lead to debris flows without historic precedents in the future. The frequency of rock slope failures is likely to increase, as excessively warm air temperatures, glacier shrinkage, as well as permafrost warming and thawing will affect and reduce rock slope stability in the direction that adversely affects rock slope stability. Changes in landslide activity in the French and Western Italian Alps will likely depend on differences in elevation. Above 1500 m asl, the projected decrease in snow season duration in future winters and springs will likely affect the frequency, number and seasonality of landslide reactivations. In Piemonte, for instance, 21st century landslides have been demonstrated to occur more frequently in early spring and to be triggered by moderate rainfalls, but also to occur in smaller numbers. On the contrary, and in line with recent observations, events in autumn, characterized by a large spatial density of landslide occurrences might become more scarce in the Piemonte region.

Achieving a pinhole-free CdS layer is necessary to produce high performance thin film CdTe solar cells. Pinholes in the CdS layer can compromise the efficiency of a CdTe solar cell by causing shunts. We have investigated the use of a plasma treatment of a fluorine doped tin oxide coated glass substrate (NSG TEC 15) and its effect on pinhole reduction in thin film CdS layers grown by Chemical Bath Deposition. CdS films, <100 nm thickness, were deposited on both O2/Ar plasma cleaned and conventionally cleaned substrates. We show that the O2/Ar plasma treatment of the TEC 15 substrate reduced the water contact angle from ∼55° to less than 12° indicating a substantial increase in the surface energy. The CdS deposited on the plasma treated TEC 15 was pinhole free, very smooth and homogenous in morphology and composition. Scanning electron microscopy images show that the O2/Ar plasma treatment is effective in increasing film density and grain size. Corresponding spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements show an increase in the refractive index from 2.18 to 2.43 at 550 nm wavelength.

These rivers are characterised by different seasonal cycles reflecting the diverse climates and morphologies of the Alpine basins. However, despite the intensive and varied water management adopted in the four basins, we found common features in the trend and low-frequency variability of the spring discharge timings. All the discharge time-series display a tendency towards earlier spring peaks of more than two weeks per century. These results can be explained in terms of snowmelt, total precipitation (i.e. the sum of snowfall and rainfall) and rainfall variability. The relative importance of these factors might be different in each basin. However, we show that the change of seasonality of total precipitation plays a major role in the earlier spring runoff over most of the Alps.
