Gasification converts biomass into syngas; however, severe cleaning processes are necessary due to the presence of tars, particulates and contaminants. The aim of this work is to propose a cleaning method system based on tar physical adsorption coupled with the production of pure H2 via a chemical looping process. Three fixed-bed reactors with a double-layer bed (NiO/Al2O3 and Fe-based particles) working in three different steps were used. First, NiO/Al2O3 is used to adsorb tar from syngas (300 °C); then, the adsorbed tar undergoes partial oxidization by NiO/Al2O3 to produce CO and H2 used for iron oxide reduction. In the third step, the reduced iron is oxidized with steam to produce pure H2 and to restore iron oxides. A double-layer fixed-bed reactor was fed alternatively by guaiacol and as tar model compounds, air and water were used. High-thermal-stability particles 60 wt% Fe2O3/40 wt% MgO synthetized by the coprecipitation method were used as Fe-based particles in six cycle tests. The adsorption efficiency of the NiO/Al2O3 bed is 98% and the gas phase formed is able to partially reduce iron, favoring the reduction kinetics. The efficiency of the process related to the H2 production after the first cycle is 35% and the amount of CO is less than 10 ppm.

The present research evaluates the simulation of a system for transforming inland-fisheries wastewater into sustainable fish feed using Designer® software. The data required were obtained from the experimental cultivation of Chlorella sp. in wastewater supplemented with N and P. According to the results, it is possible to produce up to 11,875 kg/year (31.3 kg/d) with a production cost of up to 18 (USD/kg) for dry biomass and 0.19 (USD/bottle) for concentrated biomass. Similarly, it was possible to establish the kinetics of growth of substrate-dependent biomass with a maximum production of 1.25 g/L after 15 days and 98% removal of available N coupled with 20% of P. It is essential to note the final production efficiency may vary depending on uncontrollable variables such as climate and quality of wastewater, among others.

Vincenzo Torretta in OpenAIREThis paper describes laboratory experiments aimed to develop a new wastewater treatment system as an alternative to a conventional domestic wastewater plant. A modified Biofilm Airlift Suspension reactor (BAS), with biomass attached to tubular supports, is proposed to address low organic loads (typical of domestic sewage) and low residence time (typical of compact reactors technology). Attached and suspended biomasses, coupled to the high dissolved oxygen (DO), allow high removal efficiencies (90% and 56% for COD and N-NH(4)(+) removal respectively) and high effluent quality to be reached. The experimental activity, divided into three parts, demonstrates the good efficiency of the process, and the reduction of the removal kinetics for the high operating pressure used in the technology. The occurrence of simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) was also observed. When compared with the conventional BAS system, the present treatment shows comparable removal efficiencies and higher specific removal rates (80 mg COD/g VSS and 2.60 mg N-NH(4)(+)/g VSS). The experimental results were coupled with the development of a numerical model to aid in designing a full-scale treatment plant in Italy.

<p>In the last years, extreme rainfalls have caused many collapses of bridges. In Italy several of those were short span’s ones that failed during or after extreme events of this nature. This work presents a method for inspection survey and its results regarding a campaign on 71 bridges, located in Tuscany (Massa Carrara, Italy). This area was affected by a big flood that took place in 2014 and also two earlier ones in 2012 with only 15 days apart one from the other, leading to a huge disrupting situation for the population’s daily life and consequent economical loss. Concerning this issue, the local stakeholders showed an increasing interest for sustainable methods for monitoring the built environment, thus the results of this research have been made available for integration on the Civil Protection Emergency Plan (CLE) and can be used in a decision-making prioritization list of actions. The framework uses a Gis- based approach combined with a quick survey technique. This method balances costs of surveying with the accuracy needed in inspections, bypassing the classical procedure which requires several onsite surveys. This procedure uses only three transversal river sections for each bridge. The method also comprises a tailored survey inspection form and a user-friendly worksheet was designed to build the database, applicable for further studies. Results showed the absence of maintenance on existing structures and riverbeds, often resulting in a partially or fully bridge section obstruction, and material’s decay. The framework created in this work allowed to assess the conditions of several bridges in the studied region, to further analyse the resilience of the infrastructure system and proceed with adequate interventions.</p>

<p>In the last years, extreme rainfalls have caused many collapses of bridges. In Italy several of those were short span’s ones that failed during or after extreme events of this nature. This work presents a method for inspection survey and its results regarding a campaign on 71 bridges, located in Tuscany (Massa Carrara, Italy). This area was affected by a big flood that took place in 2014 and also two earlier ones in 2012 with only 15 days apart one from the other, leading to a huge disrupting situation for the population’s daily life and consequent economical loss. Concerning this issue, the local stakeholders showed an increasing interest for sustainable methods for monitoring the built environment, thus the results of this research have been made available for integration on the Civil Protection Emergency Plan (CLE) and can be used in a decision-making prioritization list of actions. The framework uses a Gis- based approach combined with a quick survey technique. This method balances costs of surveying with the accuracy needed in inspections, bypassing the classical procedure which requires several onsite surveys. This procedure uses only three transversal river sections for each bridge. The method also comprises a tailored survey inspection form and a user-friendly worksheet was designed to build the database, applicable for further studies. Results showed the absence of maintenance on existing structures and riverbeds, often resulting in a partially or fully bridge section obstruction, and material’s decay. The framework created in this work allowed to assess the conditions of several bridges in the studied region, to further analyse the resilience of the infrastructure system and proceed with adequate interventions.</p>

A semi-empirical model has been used to estimate total net primary productivity, canopy transpiration and the water use efficiency under actual and future climate projections (B1 and A2 IPCC Scenarios) of two deciduous (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus cerris) and one evergreen tree species (Quercus ilex) growing in Italy. In response to changes in the air temperature, the two deciduous species showed a strong reduction of NPP values, whereas the evergreen one showed very limited reductions. Under future warmer conditions, Q. ilex proved to be the best adapted species, probably for its drought-tolerant water-saving strategy, while Q. cerris suffered a reduction of transpiration, due to stomatal closure which was sensitive to the change of evaporative demand. Water Use Efficiency (WUE) values did not increase in the B1 and A2 scenarios, indicating a non-conservative water-saving strategy, which likely affected the distribution pattern of Q. cerris under these conditions. Similar functional behaviour have been noted for F. sylvatica, although this species adopted a water spending strategy, typical of species growing in mesic environments, that could represent a risk for survival of beech population under extreme air temperature change. In this respect, the reduced suitable area for this species under the A2 scenario could reduce the possibilities of an upward shift toward higher altitudes.

CRUZ VIGGI, CAROLINA in OpenAIREThis study deals with formic acid removal in activated sludge processes, in particular in the processes carried out in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Formic acid removal has been investigated in a SBR fed with acetic and formic acids at equimolar concentrations. Biomass performance in the reactor has been investigated both by the analysis of the removal of the two substrates and by batch tests. Regarding SBR process, the obtained results show that a relevant difference occurred between formic and acetic acid profiles. Acetic acid was never found in the effluent and was always completely removed during the reaction phase. On the other hand, formic acid removal was determined by biomass acclimation, which is in turn determined by sludge age imposed to the system. Batch tests confirmed that formic acid removal occurs only if biomass is acclimated. It has been shown that the minimal sludge age to obtain complete formic acid removal is much higher than those predictable with the classical models of microbial growth in wastewater treatment processes. The advantages of SBRs over continuous-flow systems in the removal of formic acid have also been highlighted.

Abstract Currently the production of methanol from Refuse Derived Fuel, a derived product of Municipal Solid Waste, can be deemed as an excellent example of circular economy, by representing a promising alternative both to conventional methods of waste disposal and methanol production from fossil resources. High-temperature conversion of waste in syngas is the main step of the Waste-to-Methanol process. Unfortunately, produced syngas does not directly comply with the requirements for methanol synthesis, in that syngas purification and conditioning steps are required. Moreover, waste, due to its heterogeneous nature, presents a variable composition, leading to the production of variable syngas flowrate and composition. A thermodynamic equilibrium model of gasification unit has been developed in Aspen Plus environment and applied to analyse the effects of feedstock variability; RDF composition has been characterized considering as main parameters: ash, moisture and combustible fractions, carbon to hydrogen and carbon to oxygen ratios, and Lower Heating Value. Then, a simplified simulation of downstream process has been introduced to evaluate the influence of waste composition on overall methanol production. The present study allows the identification of the main parameters affecting the syngas and, accordingly, overall process yield, consumptions and emissions.

Abstract Currently the production of methanol from Refuse Derived Fuel, a derived product of Municipal Solid Waste, can be deemed as an excellent example of circular economy, by representing a promising alternative both to conventional methods of waste disposal and methanol production from fossil resources. High-temperature conversion of waste in syngas is the main step of the Waste-to-Methanol process. Unfortunately, produced syngas does not directly comply with the requirements for methanol synthesis, in that syngas purification and conditioning steps are required. Moreover, waste, due to its heterogeneous nature, presents a variable composition, leading to the production of variable syngas flowrate and composition. A thermodynamic equilibrium model of gasification unit has been developed in Aspen Plus environment and applied to analyse the effects of feedstock variability; RDF composition has been characterized considering as main parameters: ash, moisture and combustible fractions, carbon to hydrogen and carbon to oxygen ratios, and Lower Heating Value. Then, a simplified simulation of downstream process has been introduced to evaluate the influence of waste composition on overall methanol production. The present study allows the identification of the main parameters affecting the syngas and, accordingly, overall process yield, consumptions and emissions.

Mancini G. in OpenAIREExtra virgin olive-oil (EVO) production is an important economic activity for several countries, especially in the Mediterranean area such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Tunisia. The two major by-products from olive oil production, solid-liquid Olive Pomace (OP) and the Olive Mill Waste Waters (OMWW), are still mainly disposed on soil, in spite of the existence of legislation which already limits this practice. The present study compares the environmental impacts associated with two different scenarios for the management of waste from olive oil production through a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The two alternative scenarios are: (I) Anaerobic Digestion and (II) Disposal on soil. The analysis was performed through SimaPro software and the assessment of the impact categories was based on International Life Cycle Data and Cumulative Energy Demand methods. Both the scenarios are mostly related to the cultivation and harvesting phase and are highly dependent on the irrigation practice and related energy demand. Results from the present study clearly show that the waste disposal on soil causes the worst environmental performance of all the impact categories considered here. Important environmental benefits have been identified when anaerobic digestion is chosen as the final treatment. It was consequently demonstrated that anaerobic digestion should be a feasible alternative for olive mills, to produce biogas from common olive oil residues, reducing the environmental burden and adding value to the olive oil production chain.

Abstract Compared to solar and wind powers, micro hydro power is probably the least common of the three readily used renewable energy sources, but it has the potential to produce the most and more reliably power if the plant is placed in the proper location. Furthermore, in the last years the necessity for developing small hydropower plants has increased due to more and more urgent environmental concerns. The Shaft Hydro Power plant developed at the Technical University of Munich (denoted in the following as TUM-SHP plant) is an innovative, environmentally friendly small hydropower plant that has been designed to be installed in the body of a weir with a height between 2 and 10 m and that requires a discharge flow rate of 3 m 3 /s to achieve the minimum target 50 kW rated power. The purpose of this paper is to present first results of an ongoing research activity aimed at searching proper sites for the installation of the TUM-SHP plant in Italy. The location analysis methodology to search for potential sites is based on the investigation of rivers and weirs with proper features for the installation of the plant and afterwards on the analysis of the protected areas and the already existing water abstractions in the considered territories. The exploitable discharge has been calculated after studying the regional and provincial laws concerning water exploitation and the calculation of the achievable energy has been carried out considering the flow duration curve of the rivers and translating the values at the weirs of interest. The proposed methodology is tested on the key study of the Aurino River that flows in the province of Bolzano, Alto Adige.

The paper assesses the energy and environmental performance of two solutions designed to complement renewable energy (RE) technologies, in stand-alone power system (SAPS) configuration typical of minor Mediterranean islands, by converting the available RE surplus. The studied SAPS, based on the Ventotene island demographic, meteorological and load data, features high renewable energy penetration onto the load power demand, i.e. up to 55.25% share of peak power capacity. Transient models have been developed to simulate the storage process of winter renewable energy surplus and the time-dependent matching among SAPS electric demand and the stochastic renewable power contributions combined with energy surplus conversion systems. The study compares a hydrogen-based system and a desalinated water-production system, proposed as two effective alternatives for renewable energy seasonal buffering in an island context. The comparative analysis of the time-dependent system's behaviour has been investigated with an hourly distribution over the period of one reference year, in terms of fuel consumption and hydrogen system energy storage or desalination capacity. The assessment is carried out by taking performance indicators, SAPS fuel savings, as well as stored and dump power data. The study demonstrates the suitability of both the models for the winter renewable energy buffer, in order to improve to the matching of peak energy and water demands.
