    The paper proposes a critical assessment of municipal solid waste gasification today, starting from basic aspects of the process (process types and steps, operating and performance parameters) and arriving to a comparative analysis of the reactors (fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained bed, vertical shaft, moving grate furnace, rotary kiln, plasma reactor) as well as of the possible plant configurations (heat gasifier and power gasifier) and the environmental performances of the main commercially available gasifiers for municipal solid wastes. The analysis indicates that gasification is a technically viable option for the solid waste conversion, including residual waste from separate collection of municipal solid waste. It is able to meet existing emission limits and can have a remarkable effect on reduction of landfill disposal option.

    Abstract Emissions and efficiency of a pellet boiler (40 kW) at nominal load were compared with emissions and efficiency at reduced load, while fired with six biomass pellets. The pellets include reed canary grass ( Phalaris arundinacea ), pectin waste from citrus shells ( Citrus reticulata ), sunflower husk ( Helianthus annuus ), peat, wheat straw ( Triticum aestivum ) and wood pellets. The measurements of emissions comprised of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), sulphur oxides (SO x ) and flue dust mass concentrations (using DIN plus and isokinetic sampling techniques). Emissions varied as a function of operational loads, for each type of pellets. The CO emissions were insignificant with reed canary grass (RCG), citrus pectin waste (CPW) and straw pellets at nominal load, however, at reduced load same pellets emitted 1.9, 4.0 and 7.4 times higher CO than wood pellets, respectively. Peat pellets emitted maximum CO at nominal load (4221.1 mgNm −3 , 12.6 times higher than wood pellets) however; at reduced load CO emission was insignificant. The highest NO x emissions were reported with CPW, which were 3.4 and 4.6 times higher than wood pellets at nominal load and reduced load, respectively. Dust emissions were highest with sunflower husk and lowest with RCG pellets, at both operational modes. The best performance was reported with wood pellets, followed by RCG and pectin pellets, however, wood pellets combustion emitted 1.7 and 2.0 times higher dust DIN plus than RCG at nominal and reduced loads, respectively. Not only fuel specific combustion optimization but also operational load specific optimization is essential for efficient use of agro-pellets in this type of boilers.

    AbstractThe efficacy of thyroid (FNAB) processed by liquid‐based cytology (LBC) in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT) in two reference periods, is evaluated. The morphologic features of 820 cases with both methods and the cyto‐histological comparison are analyzed. The diagnosis of hyperplastic nodules (HN) in HT, its mimickers especially in presence of oxyphilic cells and the role of immunocytochemistry (IHC) are studied.150 cases of HT processed by conventional smear (CS) in 1996–98 and 670 with LBC in 2005–2007,were included. The majority of FNAB were carried out under USguidance and fixed with ethyl alcohol for the CS. LBC material was rinsed in the Cytolit solution, processed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Among the 150 CS, 83 were HT while 67 were HN in HT; in the second triennium 245 LBC were HT and 425 were HN in HT. In the first period a follow‐up (including a second FNA or surgery) was done in 92 cases, in the second period in 116.In the surgical group 97.1% in the first period were benign (all HT and 34/36 HN) and 2.8% malignant(all HN). In 2005–2007, 94% were benign (15 HT and 45/49 HN) and 6%malignant. Thirty HN from the second triennium had ICC for HBME‐1 and Galectin‐3 resulting negative in 93.5%. Among these cases, 10 had a benign histology and a concordant negative ICC.LBC can be used as a valid method for HT, especially for the possible application of ICC to HN, and it allows a correct preoperative selection of lesions Diagn.     Efficiency of energy resource use is a key factor for a sustainable energy future. By matching the exergy levels of supply and demand, Energy Quality Management (EQM) of building energy supply systems may achieve more efficient use of energy resources. Beyond this, environmental impact of energy supply systems is another essential issue. This work addresses the influence of EQM on CO 2 emissions in the operation optimization of a Distributed Energy System (DES). A multi-objective linear programming problem is formulated to reduce energy costs and increase the overall exergy efficiency. Total CO 2 emissions are evaluated for the optimized operation strategies of the DES. The operators of the DES can choose the operation strategy from the Pareto front, based on their priorities and also aware of effects on CO 2 emissions. Results demonstrate more efficient use of energy resources and reduction in CO 2 emissions through EQM, as compared with conventional energy supply systems.

    Dolomite-based binders are characterised by interesting technical and environmental features. For their synthesis, sources of both CaO and MgO are required. The idea developed in this work is to couple the synthesis of dolomite-based binders, starting from a natural dolomite, through the concept of concentrated solar energy (needed to drive the endothermal dolomite calcination process) in fluidised bed reactors. To this end, a fluidised bed system, where the concentrated solar radiation is mimicked by the use of Xe-lamps (short-arc), has been set up and operated. Natural dolomite (sieved in the 420-590 ?m size range) was calcined at a nominal temperature of 850 °C, and bed temperature profiles during solar-driven calcination were investigated. Then, four binders were prepared by mixing slaked dolomite (obtained from the hydration of solar calcined dolomite) with either blast furnace slag or coal fly ash as supplementary cementitious materials. The binders were hydrated for curing times ranging from 7 to 56 days. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and combined differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses were employed as characterisation techniques both to analyse the chemical composition of starting materials and to investigate the evolution of the hydration in the four systems.

    A reduced-order, “grey-box” model of an active distribution network, intended for dynamic simulations of the transmission system, is derived. The network hosts inverter-based generators as well as static and motor loads, whose dynamic parameters are affected by uncertainty. This issue is addressed using Monte-Carlo simulations. The parameters of the equivalent are adjusted to match as closely as possible the average of the randomized responses, while their dispersion is accounted for through the weights of the weighted least-square minimization. A procedure is used to remove from the identification the parameters with negligible impact. To avoid over-fitting, the equivalent is tuned for multiple large-disturbance simulations. A recursive procedure is used to select the smallest possible subset of disturbances involved in the least-square minimization. Simulation results with a 75-bus MV test-system are reported. They show that the equivalent is able to reproduce with good accuracy the discontinuous controls of inverter-based generators, such as reactive current injection and tripping.

    We report the effect of ethanol on monooxygenase activities in primary hamster hepatocyte cultures maintained on collagen-coated dishes. The addition of 50mM ethanol to cell cultures both from control and ethanol pretreated animals almost completely maintained, at least for 72hr, the P4502E1-dependent aniline hydroxylase (AnH) activity and the 2E1 immunodetectable apoprotein content at the levels of the corresponding 4-hr plated hepatocytes. On the contrary, other P450-dependent monooxygenase activities, as assayed by testosterone hydroxylases, kept decreasing falling-after 72hr of culture-to the levels of the 4-hr plated hepatocytes. In both cases, in the absence of ethanol, a rapid decline of AnH activities and 2E1 apoprotein contents were also observed, attaining undetectable levels at 72hr. The hybridizable 2E1 mRNA also rapidly declined in both cultures, but such decline was not significantly altered by the presence of 50mM ethanol in the culture medium. Furthermore, we show that P4502E1 in the liver possesses a rapid degradation phase with a half-life of about 6hr. Thus, in the hamster, P4502E1 appears regulated at post-translational level, as in rat, probably by a protein stabilization mechanism.

    This study highlights how Chinese economic development detrimentally impacted water quality in recent decades and how this has been improved by enormous investment in environmental remediation funded by the Chinese government. To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the variability of surface water quality in inland waters in China, the affecting drivers behind the changes, and how the government-financed conservation actions have impacted water quality. Water quality was found to be poorest in the North and the Northeast China Plain where there is greater coverage of developed land (cities + cropland), a higher gross domestic product (GDP), and higher population density. There are significant positive relationships between the concentration of the annual mean chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the percentage of developed land use (cities + cropland), GDP, and population density in the individual watersheds (p < 0.001). During the past decade, following Chinese government-financed investments in environmental restoration and reforestation, the water quality of Chinese inland waters has improved markedly, which is particularly evident from the significant and exponentially decreasing GDP-normalized COD and ammonium (NH4+-N) concentrations. It is evident that the increasing GDP in China over the past decade did not occur at the continued expense of its inland water ecosystems. This offers hope for the future, also for other industrializing countries, that with appropriate environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained, while simultaneously preserving inland aquatic ecosystems, particularly through management of sewage discharge.

    In the present work the influence of accelerated mineral carbonation on the leaching behaviour of basic oxygen furnace steel slag was investigated. The environmental behaviour of the material as evaluated through the release of major elements and toxic metals under varying pH conditions was the main focus of the study. Geochemical modelling of the eluates was used to derive a theoretical description of the underlying leaching phenomena for the carbonated material as compared to the original slag. Among the investigated elements, Ca and Si were most appreciably affected by carbonation. A very clear effect of carbonation on leaching was observed for silicate phases, and lower-Ca/Si-ratio minerals were found to control leaching in carbonated slag eluates as compared to the corresponding untreated slag sample as a result of Ca depletion from the residual slag particles. Clear evidence was also gained of solubility control for Ca, Mg and Mn by a number of carbonate minerals, indicating a significant involvement of the original slag constituents in the carbonation process. The release of toxic metals (Zn, V, Cr, Mo) was found to be variously affected by carbonation, owing to different mechanisms including pH changes, dissolution/precipitation of carbonates as well as sorption onto reactive mineral surfaces. The leaching test results were used to derive further considerations on the expected metal release levels on the basis of specific assumptions on the relevant pH domains for the untreated and carbonated slag.

    The paper proposes a critical assessment of municipal solid waste gasification today, starting from basic aspects of the process (process types and steps, operating and performance parameters) and arriving to a comparative analysis of the reactors (fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained bed, vertical shaft, moving grate furnace, rotary kiln, plasma reactor) as well as of the possible plant configurations (heat gasifier and power gasifier) and the environmental performances of the main commercially available gasifiers for municipal solid wastes. The analysis indicates that gasification is a technically viable option for the solid waste conversion, including residual waste from separate collection of municipal solid waste. It is able to meet existing emission limits and can have a remarkable effect on reduction of landfill disposal option.

    Abstract Emissions and efficiency of a pellet boiler (40 kW) at nominal load were compared with emissions and efficiency at reduced load, while fired with six biomass pellets. The pellets include reed canary grass ( Phalaris arundinacea ), pectin waste from citrus shells ( Citrus reticulata ), sunflower husk ( Helianthus annuus ), peat, wheat straw ( Triticum aestivum ) and wood pellets. The measurements of emissions comprised of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), sulphur oxides (SO x ) and flue dust mass concentrations (using DIN plus and isokinetic sampling techniques). Emissions varied as a function of operational loads, for each type of pellets. The CO emissions were insignificant with reed canary grass (RCG), citrus pectin waste (CPW) and straw pellets at nominal load, however, at reduced load same pellets emitted 1.9, 4.0 and 7.4 times higher CO than wood pellets, respectively. Peat pellets emitted maximum CO at nominal load (4221.1 mgNm −3 , 12.6 times higher than wood pellets) however; at reduced load CO emission was insignificant. The highest NO x emissions were reported with CPW, which were 3.4 and 4.6 times higher than wood pellets at nominal load and reduced load, respectively. Dust emissions were highest with sunflower husk and lowest with RCG pellets, at both operational modes. The best performance was reported with wood pellets, followed by RCG and pectin pellets, however, wood pellets combustion emitted 1.7 and 2.0 times higher dust DIN plus than RCG at nominal and reduced loads, respectively. Not only fuel specific combustion optimization but also operational load specific optimization is essential for efficient use of agro-pellets in this type of boilers.

    AbstractThe efficacy of thyroid (FNAB) processed by liquid‐based cytology (LBC) in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT) in two reference periods, is evaluated. The morphologic features of 820 cases with both methods and the cyto‐histological comparison are analyzed. The diagnosis of hyperplastic nodules (HN) in HT, its mimickers especially in presence of oxyphilic cells and the role of immunocytochemistry (IHC) are studied.150 cases of HT processed by conventional smear (CS) in 1996–98 and 670 with LBC in 2005–2007,were included. The majority of FNAB were carried out under USguidance and fixed with ethyl alcohol for the CS. LBC material was rinsed in the Cytolit solution, processed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Among the 150 CS, 83 were HT while 67 were HN in HT; in the second triennium 245 LBC were HT and 425 were HN in HT. In the first period a follow‐up (including a second FNA or surgery) was done in 92 cases, in the second period in 116.In the surgical group 97.1% in the first period were benign (all HT and 34/36 HN) and 2.8% malignant(all HN). In 2005–2007, 94% were benign (15 HT and 45/49 HN) and 6%malignant. Thirty HN from the second triennium had ICC for HBME‐1 and Galectin‐3 resulting negative in 93.5%. Among these cases, 10 had a benign histology and a concordant negative ICC.LBC can be used as a valid method for HT, especially for the possible application of ICC to HN, and it allows a correct preoperative selection of lesions Diagn.     Efficiency of energy resource use is a key factor for a sustainable energy future. By matching the exergy levels of supply and demand, Energy Quality Management (EQM) of building energy supply systems may achieve more efficient use of energy resources. Beyond this, environmental impact of energy supply systems is another essential issue. This work addresses the influence of EQM on CO 2 emissions in the operation optimization of a Distributed Energy System (DES). A multi-objective linear programming problem is formulated to reduce energy costs and increase the overall exergy efficiency. Total CO 2 emissions are evaluated for the optimized operation strategies of the DES. The operators of the DES can choose the operation strategy from the Pareto front, based on their priorities and also aware of effects on CO 2 emissions. Results demonstrate more efficient use of energy resources and reduction in CO 2 emissions through EQM, as compared with conventional energy supply systems.

    Dolomite-based binders are characterised by interesting technical and environmental features. For their synthesis, sources of both CaO and MgO are required. The idea developed in this work is to couple the synthesis of dolomite-based binders, starting from a natural dolomite, through the concept of concentrated solar energy (needed to drive the endothermal dolomite calcination process) in fluidised bed reactors. To this end, a fluidised bed system, where the concentrated solar radiation is mimicked by the use of Xe-lamps (short-arc), has been set up and operated. Natural dolomite (sieved in the 420-590 ?m size range) was calcined at a nominal temperature of 850 °C, and bed temperature profiles during solar-driven calcination were investigated. Then, four binders were prepared by mixing slaked dolomite (obtained from the hydration of solar calcined dolomite) with either blast furnace slag or coal fly ash as supplementary cementitious materials. The binders were hydrated for curing times ranging from 7 to 56 days. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and combined differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses were employed as characterisation techniques both to analyse the chemical composition of starting materials and to investigate the evolution of the hydration in the four systems.

    A reduced-order, “grey-box” model of an active distribution network, intended for dynamic simulations of the transmission system, is derived. The network hosts inverter-based generators as well as static and motor loads, whose dynamic parameters are affected by uncertainty. This issue is addressed using Monte-Carlo simulations. The parameters of the equivalent are adjusted to match as closely as possible the average of the randomized responses, while their dispersion is accounted for through the weights of the weighted least-square minimization. A procedure is used to remove from the identification the parameters with negligible impact. To avoid over-fitting, the equivalent is tuned for multiple large-disturbance simulations. A recursive procedure is used to select the smallest possible subset of disturbances involved in the least-square minimization. Simulation results with a 75-bus MV test-system are reported. They show that the equivalent is able to reproduce with good accuracy the discontinuous controls of inverter-based generators, such as reactive current injection and tripping.

    It's not only the carbon in the trees Forest loss affects climate not just because of the impacts it has on the carbon cycle, but also because of how it affects the fluxes of energy and water between the land and the atmosphere. Evaluating global impact is complicated because deforestation can produce different results in different climate zones, making it hard to determine large-scale trends rather than more local ones.     We report the effect of ethanol on monooxygenase activities in primary hamster hepatocyte cultures maintained on collagen-coated dishes. The addition of 50mM ethanol to cell cultures both from control and ethanol pretreated animals almost completely maintained, at least for 72hr, the P4502E1-dependent aniline hydroxylase (AnH) activity and the 2E1 immunodetectable apoprotein content at the levels of the corresponding 4-hr plated hepatocytes. On the contrary, other P450-dependent monooxygenase activities, as assayed by testosterone hydroxylases, kept decreasing falling-after 72hr of culture-to the levels of the 4-hr plated hepatocytes. In both cases, in the absence of ethanol, a rapid decline of AnH activities and 2E1 apoprotein contents were also observed, attaining undetectable levels at 72hr. The hybridizable 2E1 mRNA also rapidly declined in both cultures, but such decline was not significantly altered by the presence of 50mM ethanol in the culture medium. Furthermore, we show that P4502E1 in the liver possesses a rapid degradation phase with a half-life of about 6hr. Thus, in the hamster, P4502E1 appears regulated at post-translational level, as in rat, probably by a protein stabilization mechanism.

    This study highlights how Chinese economic development detrimentally impacted water quality in recent decades and how this has been improved by enormous investment in environmental remediation funded by the Chinese government. To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the variability of surface water quality in inland waters in China, the affecting drivers behind the changes, and how the government-financed conservation actions have impacted water quality. Water quality was found to be poorest in the North and the Northeast China Plain where there is greater coverage of developed land (cities + cropland), a higher gross domestic product (GDP), and higher population density. There are significant positive relationships between the concentration of the annual mean chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the percentage of developed land use (cities + cropland), GDP, and population density in the individual watersheds (p < 0.001). During the past decade, following Chinese government-financed investments in environmental restoration and reforestation, the water quality of Chinese inland waters has improved markedly, which is particularly evident from the significant and exponentially decreasing GDP-normalized COD and ammonium (NH4+-N) concentrations. It is evident that the increasing GDP in China over the past decade did not occur at the continued expense of its inland water ecosystems. This offers hope for the future, also for other industrializing countries, that with appropriate environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained, while simultaneously preserving inland aquatic ecosystems, particularly through management of sewage discharge.

    In the present work the influence of accelerated mineral carbonation on the leaching behaviour of basic oxygen furnace steel slag was investigated. The environmental behaviour of the material as evaluated through the release of major elements and toxic metals under varying pH conditions was the main focus of the study. Geochemical modelling of the eluates was used to derive a theoretical description of the underlying leaching phenomena for the carbonated material as compared to the original slag. Among the investigated elements, Ca and Si were most appreciably affected by carbonation. A very clear effect of carbonation on leaching was observed for silicate phases, and lower-Ca/Si-ratio minerals were found to control leaching in carbonated slag eluates as compared to the corresponding untreated slag sample as a result of Ca depletion from the residual slag particles. Clear evidence was also gained of solubility control for Ca, Mg and Mn by a number of carbonate minerals, indicating a significant involvement of the original slag constituents in the carbonation process. The release of toxic metals (Zn, V, Cr, Mo) was found to be variously affected by carbonation, owing to different mechanisms including pH changes, dissolution/precipitation of carbonates as well as sorption onto reactive mineral surfaces. The leaching test results were used to derive further considerations on the expected metal release levels on the basis of specific assumptions on the relevant pH domains for the untreated and carbonated slag.
