    Authors: Atvara, Elvīra;

    The paper studies the climate change phenomenon in Richard Powers’ novel The Overstory to analyse it from the ecocritical perspective. The methods of this study include theoretical research of literature on climate change, its portrayal in fiction and ecocriticism, as well as empirical study (close reading and ecocritical analysis). The research findings show that nature and climate change are presented in the novel as a process influenced by people’s actions. The relationship between human and nonhuman characters (trees) is depicted by evoking the myth of Gaia, multiverse, project civilization theory, and several spiritual myths and beliefs. Each of the main human characters is linked to their own tree character, though in the novel it is also emphasized that everything in nature is connected. The Overstory alludes to several possible future outcomes of climate change and embodies environmental consciousness. Key words: climate change, ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, ecofiction. Darbs pēta klimata pārmaiņu fenomenu Ričarda Pouersa romānā The Overstory, analizējot to no ekokritikas perspektīvas. Pētījuma metodes ietver klimata pārmaiņu, to attēlojuma literatūrā un ekokritikas teorētisko pētījumu, kā arī praktisko pētījumu (detalizētu lasīšanu un ekokritisku analīzi). Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka daba un klimata pārmaiņas romānā attēlotas kā process, ko ietekmē cilvēku rīcība. Cilvēku un pārējo varoņu (koku) attiecības ir attēlotas, balstoties uz Gajas mītu, paralēlās pasaules, civilizācijas projekta teoriju, kā arī vairākiem garīgiem mītiem un uzskatiem. Katrs no galvenajiem cilvēku tēliem ir saistīts ar savu koka tēlu, tomēr romānā ir arī uzsvērts, ka viss dabā ir saistīts. The Overstory atsaucas uz vairākiem iespējamiem klimata pārmaiņu nākotnes iznākumiem un iemieso vides apziņu. Atslēgas vārdi: klimata pārmaiņas, ekokritika, antropocentrisms, ekoliteratūra.

    Authors: Snášel, Pavel;

    Tematisko maršrutu izmantošanas popularitāte ir augusi visā pasaulē, taču šo maršrutu pētniecība atrodas tikai pašos pirmsākumos. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir izpētīt tematisko maršrutu izmantošanu ilgtspējīga tūrisma attīstībā, kā piemēru izmantojot Latgales reģionu, par kuru šādi pētījumi līdz šim nav veikti. Darba mērķis ir izpētīt teorētisko pamatojumu ilgtspējīga tūrisma attīstībai un tematiskajiem maršrutiem; veikt pašreizējā tūrisma pieprasījuma un piedāvājuma primāro un sekundāro datu analīzi; identificēt jomas, kuras ir nepieciešams uzlabot un ierosināt iespējamos risinājumus problēmām, kuras saistītas ar tematisko maršrutu izmantošanu tūrisma attīstībā Latgales reģionā. Latgales reģionam būtu nepieciešams apkopot kvalitatīvākus datus par tematiskajiem maršrutiem un veikt padziļinātu analīzi, lai to sekmīgi varētu izmantot tematisko maršrutu izstrādē, kas veicinātu tūrisma attīstību reģionā. The use of thematic routes has been growing around the world but the research is in its beginning. This study aims to investigate the use of thematic routes in sustainable tourism development by using the case of Latgale region, about which such research has not been done yet. The objectives are to outline the relevant theoretical background about sustainable tourism development and thematic routes; do the primary and secondary data analyses of the current tourism supply, demand and thematic routes; and identify the areas of improvement, and suggest possible solutions to challenges related to the use of thematic routes in tourism development in Latgale region. The region should collect more quality data related to thematic routes, do the closer analyses, and use them more in the development of thematic routes to enhance tourism development.

    Authors: Novikova, Gunita;

    The research uses statistical data analysis and the study of the national energy policies of the EU member states to identify the main directions in which the countries are going in order to overcome the energy crisis and greater independence in the field of energy. The evaluated results, which take into account the different geographical conditions of the member states, the traditionally formed energy systems, and the unified EU energy policy, show that it is possible to overcome the energy resource crisis with greater investments in sustainable energy, less bureaucratic burden in implementing projects, tax system for "green" and sustainable technology investments, as well as with closer cooperation between member states, creating a stable EU internal market and international connections in energy transmission. If the performance of the member states had been similarly high, the EU would overcome the energy crisis more easily, feeling less the impact of geopolitical conflicts on the internal market. Pētījuma ietvaros tiek pielietota statistikas datu analīze un ES dalībvalstu nacionālo enerģētikas politiku izpēte, lai identificētu galvenos virzienus, kuros valstis dodas, lai pārvarētu enerģētikas krīzi un iegūtu lielāku neatkarību enerģētikas jomā. Novērtējumu rezultāti, kuros ņemti vērā gan dalībvalstu atšķirīgie ģeogrāfiskie apstākļi, gan tradicionāli veidotās enerģētikas sistēmas, gan vienotā ES enerģētikas politika, liecina, ka energoresursu krīzi iespējams pārvarēt ar lielākām investīcijām ilgtspējīgā enerģētikā, mazāku birokrātisko slogu projektu īstenošanā, atvieglotāku nodokļu sistēmu “zaļo” un ilgtspējīgo tehnoloģiju investīcijām, kā arī ar ciešāku dalībvalstu sadarbību, veidojot stabilu ES iekšējo tirgu un starpvalstu savienojumus enerģijas pārvadē. Ja dalībvalstu sniegums būtu bijis vienlīdzīgi augsts, ES vieglāk pārvarētu enerģētikas krīzi, mazāk izjūtot ģeopolitisko konfliktu ietekmi uz iekšējo tirgu.

    Authors: Tauriņa, Guna;

    In the recent years, people have begun to discuss the topics of sustainability and “green” thinking more openly, because the alarming damage to the environment around us is clearly visible. As a result, the society is making a pressure on industries to become more environmentally friendly by choosing to support sustainable companies and “green” products, therefore the aim of this research is to determine the most suitable word classes for the descriptions of products and understand which companies represent the green thinking the most. The literature review provided the theoretical basis for the empirical part of the study. The case study showed that the most frequently used word class among the words supporting sustainability lexicon in the beauty product descriptions were adjectives. The analysis concluded that there is a correlation between the Eco marks used and the word classes. The names of these semiotic marks were grouped in the word class that was used the most among all product descriptions, in addition, the Ecolabels were used mostly by the companies that also demonstrated the usage of sustainability supporting lexicon the most. The company that had the most sustainability supporting lexicon was the cosmetics company “Lush”. Pēdējo gadu laikā cilvēki arvien vairāk sāk pievērst uzmanību apkārtējās vides draudiem un sāk vairāk apspriest ilgtspējību un “zaļās” domāšanas tematus. Patērētāji izdara spiedienu uz industrijām, izvēloties atbalstīt ilgspējīgi domājošus uzņēmumus un pērkot “zaļās” preces, tādēļ šī pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot vissatbilstošāko vārdšķiru kosmētikas produktu aprakstos un saprast kurš uzņēmums atspoguļo “zaļo” domāšanu visvairāk. Literatūras apskats sniedz teorētisko pamatu empīriskās daļas veikšanai. Kosmētikas aprakstu izpētes gaitā tika secināts, ka no vārdiem, kuri ir saistīti ar ilgtspējību, visbiežāk izmantotā vārdšķira ir īpašības vārds, kā arī tika secināts, ka pastāv saikne starp Eko zīmēm, kuras tiek izmantotas kosmētikas produktu aprakstos un vārdšķirām. Nosaukumi, kuri apzīmē šīs zīmes pārstāv vārdšķiras, kuras tika izmantotas vissbiežāk produktu aprakstos, kā arī, uzņēmumi, kuri izmantoja Eko zīmes, arī izmantoja visvairāk ilgstpējību atbalstošus vārdus. Uzņēmums, kurš izmantoja visvairāk šādus vārdus ir kosmētikas uzņēmums “Lush”.

    Authors: Tauriņa, Guna;

The European Green Deal encompasses two aspects spanning across the internal-external continuum. Firstly, to achieve climate neutrality, the EU energy sector will undergo a complete transformation and, consequently, play an essential role in the bloc’s transition to a cleaner economy. Secondly, the Green Deal provides the EU with an impeccable opportunity to play a more assertive role in international politics. In this context, energy diplomacy becomes a vital tool for the EU’s objectives. The papers argue that energy diplomacy can help the EU respond to its overall energy situation. In order to answer the research question, first, the EU energy situation has been systematically studied through the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis to outline the action areas that require attention. This has been followed by the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) method and an expert survey to establish critical priorities among the identified SWOT factors, ending with detailed proposals to meet the prioritised energy challenges or opportunities through the energy diplomacy approach. The results of the SWOT-AHP methodology and the expert survey provides the conclusion that the proposal of the EU energy diplomacy should focus upon alleviating the weakness of EU ‘energy dependency’ and work towards meeting the opportunity of ‘first-mover advantage in new cleantech’ and the possible threat of ‘inadequate global climate action’.Along with this, it should also take the help of the EU’s leadership in the renewable sector within its strategic plan. Therefore, the research proposal is based on establishing a green hydrogen partnership between the EU and North Africa. Green hydrogen imports from North Africa will contribute to EU energy security and help it realise its renewable export potential.

    Authors: Šēnhofa;, S.; Lazdiņa;, D.; Jansons;, A.;

    Application of renewable materials such as wood in construction, production of furniture, and for other purposes including energetics is a crucial tool for mitigation of climatic changes and reduction of air pollution. In this respect, plantations of poplar with rotation period of 15–20 years for timber and 5 years for woodchip production, are boosting the volume of renewable resources in Europe. Such plantations can also have significant effect in balancing of flow of conventional (forestry) wood resources, which are affected by socioeconomic and environmental factors. Under Latvian climate, rotation period shorter than 20 years can be achieved only by Populus (poplar and aspen) hybrids. The establishment of such short rotation plantations becomes more popular also as the frequency of various natural disturbances, such as wind, increases. The increasing application of poplars can also be related to the desire of landowners to get profit from investments in tree plantation during their life.The first poplar plantations in Latvia were established at the beginning of the 20th century. However, since the middle of the 20th century interest in them has almost disappeared. Research in this area was resumed only in the 21st century. This monograph summarizes the results obtained in the second decade of 21st century in Latvia and provides practical recommendations for establishment of poplar plantations. Specifics of establishment and management of poplar plantations, quality and potential productivity of the reproductive material, as well as the main environmental interactions are presented. New data on the height increment of cuttings of different length during the first growing seasons are presented, concluding that longer cuttings are favourable for areas with higher risk of overgrowth by competing vegetation. Analysis of radial increment showed that the maximum width of annual rings was reached at the age 10–15 years, rapidly decreasing after the age of 20 years, thus suggesting final harvest age of the plantations. The monograph presents information on the long-term (65 years old trees) effect of climatic factors on radial increment of poplar hybrids. The set of climatic factors affecting increment of poplars differs from that affecting growth of native tree species (Norway spruce, silver birch). Poplars are susceptible to moisture deficit at the end summer, especially in combination with high temperature, which affect increment (ring width) in both the current and the following year. Narrower annual rings are caused also by the fluctuations of air temperature in late summer (August–September), likely indicating frost damage. The growth rate for poplars in September is only slightly lower than in the June–August period (10–15 mm per day). Rapid drop in temperature immediately after mid-September, especially in frost prone areas (like relief depression), leads to frost damages of shoots of the fast-growing poplar clones. Cumulative effect of the growing conditions determines the biomass of trees. Biomass allocation differs regionally, therefore local above-ground biomass equation are important. Such equations for poplars in Latvia are presented in this monograph. Compared to aspen, poplar allocates relatively small proportion of biomass to branches (ca. 10%), thus aiding for higher volume of more valuable sentiments (e.g., saw logs) and higher yields. Overall, the results confirm increasing potential for a wide application of poplar hybrids for establishment of plantations, both on lands unsuitable for agriculture, as well as on forest lands.

    Authors: Rage, Anna;

    City can be seen as multifunction organism, which is able to function due to both internal recourses of the urban ecosystem and is even more dependent on external recourses. Nevertheless rising population numbers and pressure on the nature areas and cultural heritage sites is constantly increasing. Urban management and administration is based on rigid legislation instruments and technical engineering solutions. Consequently cities become rigorous and human-controlled systems that lose the ability to adopt to unpredictable external factors. The loss of city’s cultural and historical face leaves an undesirable mark on place identity and well - being issues. This research focuses on urban green infrastructure restoration and integration in the surrounding landscape, taking into consideration social and cultural heritage issues. Additionally, this work will research various case studies that could serve as an additional source of data not only to complement theoretical background overview but also integrate practical examples into research results by providing recommendations for urban green infrastructure planning. Each anthropogenic intervention leaves a stamp on the landscape that makes it almost impossible to reverse system to the previous system state. For this reason the research is based on social-ecological system sustainability (resilience) assessment which examines the issues of the particular system, its key components, system dynamic in various scales and also governance and social network characteristics. This work will look for solutions how to combine social and ecological values in historical Hunze river area located in the city of Groningen. Considering social-ecological system assessment, it is possible to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the system and therefore adjusting governance and decision - making accordingly to the relevant circumstances. Pilsētu var uzskatīt par daudzšķautņainu organismu, kas pastāv pateicoties gan pilsētas ekosistēmas iekšējiem, gan arī ārējiem resursiem, taču pieaugot iedzīvotāju skaitam, noslogojums uz pilsētā pastāvošajām dabas teritorijām un kultūrmantojumu nemitīgi pieaug. Pilsētvide veidošanā tiek izmantoti stingri noteikti pārvaldības instrumenti, kā arī pilsētvides apsaimniekošanā tiek izmantoti tehniski pārvaldības risinājumi. Līdz ar to pilsētas kļūs par neelastīgām un izteikti cilvēku kontrolētām sistēmām, kuras zaudē spēju pielāgoties neprognozētu ārējo faktoru iedarbībai. Arī pilsētas kultūrvēsturiskās sejas zaudēšana atstāj nospiedumu uz vietas identitātes un labklājības jautājumiem. Tā iemesla dēļ šajā pētījumā galvenā uzmanība tiek pievērsta pilsētas zaļās infrastruktūras atjaunošanai un integrēšanai apkārtējā ainavā, ņemot vērā sociālos un kultūras mantojuma jautājumus. Papildus šajā darbā tiks pētīti gadījumu piemēri, kas kalpo kā papildus informācijas avots ne tikai teorētisko zināšu papildināšanai, bet arī praktisku piemēru integrēšanai šī pētījuma rezultātos, piedāvājot ieteikumus pilsētvides zaļās infrastruktūras plānošanā. Katra antropogēna iejaukšanās atstāj nospiedumu, kuru nevar tik viegli mainīt vai atgriezt iepriekšējā sistēmas stāvoklī, tāpēc šajā darbā tiks izmantota sociāl - ekoloģiskas sistēmas ilgtspējas (noturības) novērtējums, kurš apskata konkrētas sistēmas problēmas, tās elementus, dinamisko attīstību dažādos mērogos, kā arī pārvaldības un sociālā tikla īpašības. Šis darbs meklēs risinājumus, kā apvienot sociālo un ekoloģisko vērtības vēsturiskajā Hunzes upes teritorijā. Pateicoties socio-ekoloģiskajam novērtējuma ir iespējams izcelt sistēmas stiprās un vājās puses, laicīgi piemērojot pilsētvides pārvaldību attiecīgajiem apstākļiem.

    Authors: Atvara, Elvīra;

    Authors: Snášel, Pavel;

    Authors: Novikova, Gunita;

    Authors: Tauriņa, Guna;

    Authors: Rage, Anna;
