The management of the distribution network is becoming increasingly important as the penetration of distributed energy resources is increasing. Reliable knowledge of the real-time status of the network is essential if algorithms are to be used to help distribution system operators define network configurations. State Estimation (SE) algorithms are capable of producing such an accurate snapshot of the network state but, in turn, require a wide range of information, e.g., network topology, real-time measurement and power profiles from customers/productions. Those profiles which may, in principle, be provided by smart meters are not always available due to technical limitations of existing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in terms of communication, storage and computing power. That means that power profiles are only available for a subset of customers. The paper proposes an approach that can overcome these limitations: the remaining profiles, required by SE algorithms, are generated on the basis of customer-related information, identifying clusters of customers with similar features, such as the same contract and pattern of energy consumption. For each cluster, a power profile estimator is generated using long-term power profiles of a limited sub-set of customers, randomly selected from the cluster itself. The synthesized full power profile, representing each customer of the distribution network, is then obtained by scaling the power profile estimator of the cluster to which the customer belongs, by the monthly energy exchanged by that customer, data that are easily available. The feasibility of the proposed approach was validated considering the distribution grid of Unareti SpA, an Italian Distribution System Operator (DSO), operating in northern Italy and serving approximately one million customers. The application of the proposed approach to the actual infrastructure shows some limitations in terms of the accuracy of the estimation of the power profile of the customer. In particular, the proposed methodology is not fully able to properly represent clusters composed of customers with a large variability in terms of power exchange with the distribution network. In any case, the root mean square error of the synthesized full power profile with the respect to validation power profiles belonging to the same cluster is, in the worst case, on the order of 6.3%, while in the rest of cases is well below 5%. Thus, the proposed approach represents a good compromise between accuracy in representing the behavior of customers on the network and resources (in terms of computational power, data storage and communication resources) to achieve that results.

The paper investigates hydraulic wave propagation phenomena through hydraulic circuits of power transmission systems by means of numerical approaches. The actuation circuit of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) power transmission system supplied by a Gerotor pump is analyzed. A steady state approach is adopted to detect resonance phenomena due to Gerotor design parameters and circuit lengths, while one-dimensional numerical models are implemented to predict the pressure oscillations through the hydraulic ducts for the whole pump operating domain. CFD-1D pipelines are adopted to address the pressure oscillation behavior through the hydraulic pipeline, while spectral maps and order tracking techniques are used to evaluate their fluctuation intensity in function of the pump speed rate. The numerical models are validated with experimental tests performed on an ad hoc test rig for power transmission systems and a good match is found between the numerical and the experimental results. Pump design parameters as well as hydraulic accumulators and resonators are numerically investigated to quantitatively evaluate their improvement on the circuits’ hydro-dynamic behavior. Furthermore, simplified numerical models are implemented to investigate the frequency response behavior of the hydraulic circuits by means of linear analysis. This approach resulted to be particularly effective for the prediction of the resonance frequencies location, and it can be adopted as an optimization tool since significant simulation time can be saved. Finally, the performance of the circuits operating with an eco-friendly fluid is evaluated numerically and the results are compared with the ones obtained with a traditional petroleum-based oil.

Only a small number of German farmers invest in wind turbines on the land they own; rather, they tend to lease land for that purpose to external investors. In this study, an explorative qualitative analysis of the reasons for this investment pattern was conducted. Calculations of the economic efficiency (e.g., net present value, payoff) of wind turbines built the foundation of the study. In addition, farmers in the northeastern federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were interviewed to assess their motives for capital expenditure. A considerable amount of equity capital is required to set up a wind turbine. The capital invested frequently competes with the purchase of agricultural land. Erecting wind turbines involves risks. Substantial financial means for planning permission and other examinations precede the construction of a wind turbine. Only at the very end of these costly investigations will a construction permit be issued; as such, farmers face a high level of uncertainty during the whole process. Fluctuations in wind yield resulting in volatile revenues confront farmers with additional financial uncertainties. The risk-taking behavior of farmers was assessed normatively by the Hurwicz criterion. The results showed that farmers with the necessary funds at their disposal and a high level of optimism were more likely to take the risk to set up a wind turbine on their own land. They make this decision despite the fact that leasing one’s own land to external investors is predictably profitable and clearly less risky.

The number of helicopter operations is increasing with the expansion of offshore wind energy, which stresses the point that the current German regulations have not yet been validated through scientific analysis. A collaborative research project between DLR, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen has been conducted to examine the sizes of the flight corridors on offshore wind farms and the lateral safety clearance for helicopter hoist operations at offshore wind turbines. This paper details the results of piloted helicopter simulations in a realistic offshore wind farm scenario. The far-wake of rotating wind turbines and the near-wake of non-rotating wind turbines have been simulated with high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics under realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The resulting flow fields have been processed by superposition during piloted simulations in the research flight simulator AVES to examine the flight corridors in transit flights and the lateral safety clearance in hovering flights. The results suggest a sufficient size for the flight corridor and sufficient lateral safety clearance at the offshore wind turbines in the considered scenarios.

Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses. Theoretical considerations and first measurements indicate that the effects of hydrogen admixture on combustion temperatures and the laminar combustion velocities are often largely mitigated by a shift towards higher air excess ratios in the absence of combustion control systems, but also that common combustion control technologies may be unable to react properly to the presence of hydrogen in the fuel.

Understanding the amount of energy a tire is subjected to is one of the key elements to perform in motorsport competitions, especially in Formula 1 feeder categories, where the number of tires is limited over the race weekend to contain costs. This forces teams to use worn tires towards the end of the event. Therefore, tires are usually chosen only relying on their external shape or based on the kilometers traveled. Moreover, being aware of how a setup change impacts tires can be a breakthrough in tire management, especially in tracks where tire wear is limiting the overall performance. This paper provides a scientific method aimed at helping race engineers in tire management to maintain a high performance level through the entire race weekend.

The conventional voltage-to-voltage controller is split into a master and a slave controller. The master controller implements constant current, constant voltage (CCCV) control, required for demanding applications, for example, lithium battery charging or laboratory power supplies. It defines the set-current for the open-loop current slave controller, which generates the pulse width modulation (PWM) parameters. The power supply achieves fast large-signal responses, e.g., from 5 V to 24 V , where 95% of the target value is reached in less than 400 s . The design is evaluated extensively in simulation and on a prototype. A match between simulation and measurement is achieved.

This paper aims to present the gained experience in modeling and simulating bottom-up power system restoration processes. In a system with low inertia, such as a restoration path, the Common Information Models for the regulation systems appear to no longer be suitable for the estimation of the frequency behavior, and thus a detailed model must be considered. On the other hand, due to the predominantly inductive behavior of the HV transmission network, the assumption of decoupling the power-frequency behavior to study the restoration stability seems to be licit. All these issues are discussed and justified in the paper by means of the use of different software packages and of the comparison with on-field recordings.

The rotor-rotor aerodynamic interaction is one of the key phenomena that characterise the flow and the performance of most of the new urban air mobility vehicles (eVTOLs) developed in the recent years. The present article describes a numerical activity that aimed to the systematic study of the rotor-rotor aerodynamic interaction with application to the flight conditions typical of eVTOL aircraft. The activity considers the use of a novel mid-fidelity aerodynamic solver based on vortex particle method. In particular, numerical simulations were performed when considering two propellers both in side-by-side and tandem configuration with different separation distances. The results of numerical simulations showed a slight reduction of the propellers performance in side-by-side configuration, while a remarkable loss of thrust in the order of 40% and a reduction of about 20% of the propulsive efficiency were found in tandem configuration, particularly when the propeller disks are completely overlapped. Moreover, the flow field analysis enabled providing a detailed insight regarding the flow physics involved in such aerodynamic interactions.

The paper investigates hydraulic wave propagation phenomena through hydraulic circuits of power transmission systems by means of numerical approaches. The actuation circuit of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) power transmission system supplied by a Gerotor pump is analyzed. A steady state approach is adopted to detect resonance phenomena due to Gerotor design parameters and circuit lengths, while one-dimensional numerical models are implemented to predict the pressure oscillations through the hydraulic ducts for the whole pump operating domain. CFD-1D pipelines are adopted to address the pressure oscillation behavior through the hydraulic pipeline, while spectral maps and order tracking techniques are used to evaluate their fluctuation intensity in function of the pump speed rate. The numerical models are validated with experimental tests performed on an ad hoc test rig for power transmission systems and a good match is found between the numerical and the experimental results. Pump design parameters as well as hydraulic accumulators and resonators are numerically investigated to quantitatively evaluate their improvement on the circuits’ hydro-dynamic behavior. Furthermore, simplified numerical models are implemented to investigate the frequency response behavior of the hydraulic circuits by means of linear analysis. This approach resulted to be particularly effective for the prediction of the resonance frequencies location, and it can be adopted as an optimization tool since significant simulation time can be saved. Finally, the performance of the circuits operating with an eco-friendly fluid is evaluated numerically and the results are compared with the ones obtained with a traditional petroleum-based oil.

Only a small number of German farmers invest in wind turbines on the land they own; rather, they tend to lease land for that purpose to external investors. In this study, an explorative qualitative analysis of the reasons for this investment pattern was conducted. Calculations of the economic efficiency (e.g., net present value, payoff) of wind turbines built the foundation of the study. In addition, farmers in the northeastern federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were interviewed to assess their motives for capital expenditure. A considerable amount of equity capital is required to set up a wind turbine. The capital invested frequently competes with the purchase of agricultural land. Erecting wind turbines involves risks. Substantial financial means for planning permission and other examinations precede the construction of a wind turbine. Only at the very end of these costly investigations will a construction permit be issued; as such, farmers face a high level of uncertainty during the whole process. Fluctuations in wind yield resulting in volatile revenues confront farmers with additional financial uncertainties. The risk-taking behavior of farmers was assessed normatively by the Hurwicz criterion. The results showed that farmers with the necessary funds at their disposal and a high level of optimism were more likely to take the risk to set up a wind turbine on their own land. They make this decision despite the fact that leasing one’s own land to external investors is predictably profitable and clearly less risky.

The number of helicopter operations is increasing with the expansion of offshore wind energy, which stresses the point that the current German regulations have not yet been validated through scientific analysis. A collaborative research project between DLR, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen has been conducted to examine the sizes of the flight corridors on offshore wind farms and the lateral safety clearance for helicopter hoist operations at offshore wind turbines. This paper details the results of piloted helicopter simulations in a realistic offshore wind farm scenario. The far-wake of rotating wind turbines and the near-wake of non-rotating wind turbines have been simulated with high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics under realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The resulting flow fields have been processed by superposition during piloted simulations in the research flight simulator AVES to examine the flight corridors in transit flights and the lateral safety clearance in hovering flights. The results suggest a sufficient size for the flight corridor and sufficient lateral safety clearance at the offshore wind turbines in the considered scenarios.

Hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is commonly expected to play a major role in future energy supply, e.g., as an admixture gas in natural gas grids. Which impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances can be expected due to the significantly different physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-enriched natural gas? This paper analyses and discusses blends of hydrogen and natural gas from the perspective of combustion science. The admixture of hydrogen into natural gas changes the properties of the fuel gas. Depending on the combustion system, burner design and other boundary conditions, these changes may cause higher combustion temperatures and laminar combustion velocities, while changing flame positions and shapes are also to be expected. For appliances that are designed for natural gas, these effects may cause risk of flashback, reduced operational safety, material deterioration, higher nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx), and efficiency losses. Theoretical considerations and first measurements indicate that the effects of hydrogen admixture on combustion temperatures and the laminar combustion velocities are often largely mitigated by a shift towards higher air excess ratios in the absence of combustion control systems, but also that common combustion control technologies may be unable to react properly to the presence of hydrogen in the fuel.

Understanding the amount of energy a tire is subjected to is one of the key elements to perform in motorsport competitions, especially in Formula 1 feeder categories, where the number of tires is limited over the race weekend to contain costs. This forces teams to use worn tires towards the end of the event. Therefore, tires are usually chosen only relying on their external shape or based on the kilometers traveled. Moreover, being aware of how a setup change impacts tires can be a breakthrough in tire management, especially in tracks where tire wear is limiting the overall performance. This paper provides a scientific method aimed at helping race engineers in tire management to maintain a high performance level through the entire race weekend.

The conventional voltage-to-voltage controller is split into a master and a slave controller. The master controller implements constant current, constant voltage (CCCV) control, required for demanding applications, for example, lithium battery charging or laboratory power supplies. It defines the set-current for the open-loop current slave controller, which generates the pulse width modulation (PWM) parameters. The power supply achieves fast large-signal responses, e.g., from 5 V to 24 V , where 95% of the target value is reached in less than 400 s . The design is evaluated extensively in simulation and on a prototype. A match between simulation and measurement is achieved.

This paper aims to present the gained experience in modeling and simulating bottom-up power system restoration processes. In a system with low inertia, such as a restoration path, the Common Information Models for the regulation systems appear to no longer be suitable for the estimation of the frequency behavior, and thus a detailed model must be considered. On the other hand, due to the predominantly inductive behavior of the HV transmission network, the assumption of decoupling the power-frequency behavior to study the restoration stability seems to be licit. All these issues are discussed and justified in the paper by means of the use of different software packages and of the comparison with on-field recordings.

The rotor-rotor aerodynamic interaction is one of the key phenomena that characterise the flow and the performance of most of the new urban air mobility vehicles (eVTOLs) developed in the recent years. The present article describes a numerical activity that aimed to the systematic study of the rotor-rotor aerodynamic interaction with application to the flight conditions typical of eVTOL aircraft. The activity considers the use of a novel mid-fidelity aerodynamic solver based on vortex particle method. In particular, numerical simulations were performed when considering two propellers both in side-by-side and tandem configuration with different separation distances. The results of numerical simulations showed a slight reduction of the propellers performance in side-by-side configuration, while a remarkable loss of thrust in the order of 40% and a reduction of about 20% of the propulsive efficiency were found in tandem configuration, particularly when the propeller disks are completely overlapped. Moreover, the flow field analysis enabled providing a detailed insight regarding the flow physics involved in such aerodynamic interactions.
