    Abstract The use of simplifying techniques to obtain skeletal kinetic mechanisms with the required accuracy is often a necessary step when computationally demanding simulations are concerned. In this work, a novel approach for an automatic mechanism reduction, aimed at retaining accuracy on specific target species, is proposed. Starting from the consolidated coupling between flux analysis and sensitivity analysis, a methodology based on curve matching and functional data analysis was developed, through which the importance of a species in the target accuracy is assessed via a proper metric. The error associated with the removal of uncertain species from the detailed mechanism is quantified in terms of distance and similarity indices before and after such a removal, within a Species-Targeted Sensitivity Analysis (STSA) framework. A species ranking is then generated, and the original mechanism is progressively reduced. The whole algorithm also implements several improvements to enhance a faster convergence, and adds a novel criterion to remove unimportant reactions, based on sensitivity analysis to kinetic parameters. The capability of this algorithm was tested through two case studies in this work. A kinetic mechanism for a Toluene Reference Fuel (TRF) was first obtained, with the overall reactivity as reduction target. The numerical procedure allowed to obtain a compact skeletal mechanism (115 species and 856 reactions), able to retain good accuracy in ignition delay time and laminar flame speed predictions of both fuel mixture and pure compounds. More important, two skeletal mechanisms for methane combustion, including chemistry of nitrogen oxides (NO x ), were developed, with different degrees of reduction. The agreement between the original and the skeletal mechanisms in terms of NO formation was successfully assessed with satisfactory results. Attention was also dedicated to the choice of the type of reactor where undertaking reduction, which turned out to play a major role in the overall process.

    It's not only the carbon in the trees Forest loss affects climate not just because of the impacts it has on the carbon cycle, but also because of how it affects the fluxes of energy and water between the land and the atmosphere. Evaluating global impact is complicated because deforestation can produce different results in different climate zones, making it hard to determine large-scale trends rather than more local ones.     Pervasive computing and business process modeling are increasingly joining forces, as mobile human users shall be seamlessly integrated into business processes. In respective scenarios, humans use mobile devices and wireless technology to interact with workflows running in a powerful back-end infrastructure. However, the frequent interaction between humans and workflows causes a high communication overhead and, thus, high energy consumption on mobile devices. This impacts the usability and efficiency of the business process due to rapidly drained batteries and the resulting short life-times of the devices and applications. We present an approach based on a minimum-cut algorithm for reducing costly data transmissions during workflow execution by distributing parts of a workflow to the users' devices. Our motivation is to reduce the energy consumption on the mobile devices and, thus, avoid draining batteries in the field. We prove that our algorithm finds the optimal solution for a given network and workflow, decreasing the energy consumed on mobile devices by 32-37% compared to an approach where the entire workflow is executed in the infrastructure. Thus, in typical domains like logistics and health care, one third of the energy can be saved. This either means that devices have to be charged less frequently, leading to less distraction in the business process, or that mobile device specifications can be lowered. Significant cost reductions result in both cases.

    In the present work the influence of accelerated mineral carbonation on the leaching behaviour of basic oxygen furnace steel slag was investigated. The environmental behaviour of the material as evaluated through the release of major elements and toxic metals under varying pH conditions was the main focus of the study. Geochemical modelling of the eluates was used to derive a theoretical description of the underlying leaching phenomena for the carbonated material as compared to the original slag. Among the investigated elements, Ca and Si were most appreciably affected by carbonation. A very clear effect of carbonation on leaching was observed for silicate phases, and lower-Ca/Si-ratio minerals were found to control leaching in carbonated slag eluates as compared to the corresponding untreated slag sample as a result of Ca depletion from the residual slag particles. Clear evidence was also gained of solubility control for Ca, Mg and Mn by a number of carbonate minerals, indicating a significant involvement of the original slag constituents in the carbonation process. The release of toxic metals (Zn, V, Cr, Mo) was found to be variously affected by carbonation, owing to different mechanisms including pH changes, dissolution/precipitation of carbonates as well as sorption onto reactive mineral surfaces. The leaching test results were used to derive further considerations on the expected metal release levels on the basis of specific assumptions on the relevant pH domains for the untreated and carbonated slag.

    The electric response to an external periodic voltage of small amplitude of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) made up with an alternative architecture has been investigated. DSCs have been fabricated with a reversible sealing structure, based on microfluidic concepts, with a precise control on the geometric parameters of the active chamber. Cells with different electrolyte thicknesses have been characterized, without varying the thickness of the TiO2layer, both under illumination and in dark conditions. Measurements of the electric impedance have been performed in the presence of an external bias ranging from 0 V to 0.8 V. The experimental data have been analyzed in terms of a transmission line model, with two transport channels. The results show that the photovoltaic performances of the microfluidic cell are comparable with those obtained in irreversibly sealed structures, actually demonstrating the reliability of the proposed device.

    The assessment of the ‘quality’ of built heritage is a complex transdisciplinary issue, which both public administrations and real estate developers need to carefully consider when making any interventions. Recent international climate regulations underline that currently around 75% of buildings in the EU are not energy efficient. In Italy, those inefficient buildings are more than 50 years old and, if subjected to retrofit interventions, risk being totally transformed and losing their historical value in favor of a more contemporary use. This work aimed to study the residential heritage of the second half of the 20th century in the real estate market and to understand if, how, and in what measure the building and architectonical qualities are recognized and monetized by buyers. The city of Turin was chosen as a study area, and residential building qualities were analyzed using two quality indicators to perform a GWR on market POIs. The results highlighted that housing historical qualities are not homogeneously recognized by the real estate market, in favor of green ones. This work can help both public and private bodies to identify which ‘invisible’ quality residential buildings are immediately exploitable for enhancement strategies, with more respectful retrofitting interventions and a modern protection policy.

    In recent years, deregulation in the power generation market worldwide combined with significant variation in fuel prices and a need for flexibility in terms of power augmentation specially during periods of high electricity demand (summer months or noon to 6 PM) has forced electric utilities, cogenerators and independent power producers to explore new power generation enhancement technologies. In the last 5–10 years, inlet fogging approach has shown more promising results to recover lost power output due to increased ambient temperature compared to the other available power enhancement techniques. This paper presents the first systematic study on the effects of both inlet evaporative and overspray fogging on a wide range of combined cycle power plants utilizing gas turbines available from the major gas turbine manufacturers worldwide. A brief discussion on the thermodynamic considerations of inlet and overspray fogging including the effect of droplet dimension is also presented. Based on the analyzed systems, the results show that high pressure inlet fogging influences performance of a combined cycle power plant using an aero-derivative gas turbine differently than with an advanced technology or a traditional gas turbine. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed.

    Abstract In this paper, we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of energy poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually facing affordability problems. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made available, shows that, regardless of the affordability index adopted, the provision of state energy benefits has little impact on fuel poverty.

    This paper deals with wave energy conversion in shallow water, analyzing the performance of two different oscillating-body systems. The first one is a heaving float, which is a system known in the literature. The second one is obtained by coupling the heaving float with a surging paddle. In order to check the different behaviors of the multibody system and the single-body heaving float, physical models of the two systems have been tested in a wave flume, by placing them at various water depths along a sloping bottom. The systems have been tested with monochromatic waves. For each water depth, several tests have been performed varying the geometrical and mechanical parameters of the two systems, in order to find their best configurations. It has been found that the multibody system is more energetic when the float and the paddle are close to each other. Capture width ratio has been found to significantly vary with water depth for both systems: in particular, capture width ratio of the heaving float (also within the multibody system) increases as water depth increases, while capture width ratio of the paddle (within the multibody system) increases as water depth decreases. At the end, the capture width ratio of the multibody system is almost always higher than that of the heaving float, and it increases as water depth increases on average; however, the multibody advantage over single body is significant for water depth less than the characteristic dimension of the system, and decreases as water depth increases.

    The Galapagos Islands have been declared a World Heritage site due to their unique biodiversity, which makes them a living museum and a natural laboratory for humankind. However, to fulfill the energy needs of its habitants and foreign visitors, the islands have depended on fossil fuel energies that have produced levels of lead and chemical agents that are affecting the islands’ air quality, flora, and fauna. Therefore, zero-carbon initiatives have been created to protect the islands, wherein solar and wind power plants have been studied as reliable alternatives. In this way, Geographical Information Systems based on Multicriteria Decision Methods constitute a methodology that minimizes the destruction and disturbance of nature in order to assess the best location for the implementation of these alternative energy sources. Therefore, by exploring the geographical information along with the Analytical Hierarchical Processes and the Ordered Weighted Average methods, it was possible to identify the potential for solar power plants of 10 MW on each island; likewise, for wind power plants, it was found that the islands possess implementation potential that has been analyzed in the field, showing that the best location is on Baltra Island, but is not limited to it.

    Abstract The use of simplifying techniques to obtain skeletal kinetic mechanisms with the required accuracy is often a necessary step when computationally demanding simulations are concerned. In this work, a novel approach for an automatic mechanism reduction, aimed at retaining accuracy on specific target species, is proposed. Starting from the consolidated coupling between flux analysis and sensitivity analysis, a methodology based on curve matching and functional data analysis was developed, through which the importance of a species in the target accuracy is assessed via a proper metric. The error associated with the removal of uncertain species from the detailed mechanism is quantified in terms of distance and similarity indices before and after such a removal, within a Species-Targeted Sensitivity Analysis (STSA) framework. A species ranking is then generated, and the original mechanism is progressively reduced. The whole algorithm also implements several improvements to enhance a faster convergence, and adds a novel criterion to remove unimportant reactions, based on sensitivity analysis to kinetic parameters. The capability of this algorithm was tested through two case studies in this work. A kinetic mechanism for a Toluene Reference Fuel (TRF) was first obtained, with the overall reactivity as reduction target. The numerical procedure allowed to obtain a compact skeletal mechanism (115 species and 856 reactions), able to retain good accuracy in ignition delay time and laminar flame speed predictions of both fuel mixture and pure compounds. More important, two skeletal mechanisms for methane combustion, including chemistry of nitrogen oxides (NO x ), were developed, with different degrees of reduction. The agreement between the original and the skeletal mechanisms in terms of NO formation was successfully assessed with satisfactory results. Attention was also dedicated to the choice of the type of reactor where undertaking reduction, which turned out to play a major role in the overall process.

Evaluating global impact is complicated because deforestation can produce different results in different climate zones, making it hard to determine large-scale trends rather than more local ones.     Pervasive computing and business process modeling are increasingly joining forces, as mobile human users shall be seamlessly integrated into business processes. In respective scenarios, humans use mobile devices and wireless technology to interact with workflows running in a powerful back-end infrastructure. However, the frequent interaction between humans and workflows causes a high communication overhead and, thus, high energy consumption on mobile devices. This impacts the usability and efficiency of the business process due to rapidly drained batteries and the resulting short life-times of the devices and applications. We present an approach based on a minimum-cut algorithm for reducing costly data transmissions during workflow execution by distributing parts of a workflow to the users' devices. Our motivation is to reduce the energy consumption on the mobile devices and, thus, avoid draining batteries in the field. We prove that our algorithm finds the optimal solution for a given network and workflow, decreasing the energy consumed on mobile devices by 32-37% compared to an approach where the entire workflow is executed in the infrastructure. Thus, in typical domains like logistics and health care, one third of the energy can be saved. This either means that devices have to be charged less frequently, leading to less distraction in the business process, or that mobile device specifications can be lowered. Significant cost reductions result in both cases.

    In the present work the influence of accelerated mineral carbonation on the leaching behaviour of basic oxygen furnace steel slag was investigated. The environmental behaviour of the material as evaluated through the release of major elements and toxic metals under varying pH conditions was the main focus of the study. Geochemical modelling of the eluates was used to derive a theoretical description of the underlying leaching phenomena for the carbonated material as compared to the original slag. Among the investigated elements, Ca and Si were most appreciably affected by carbonation. A very clear effect of carbonation on leaching was observed for silicate phases, and lower-Ca/Si-ratio minerals were found to control leaching in carbonated slag eluates as compared to the corresponding untreated slag sample as a result of Ca depletion from the residual slag particles. Clear evidence was also gained of solubility control for Ca, Mg and Mn by a number of carbonate minerals, indicating a significant involvement of the original slag constituents in the carbonation process. The release of toxic metals (Zn, V, Cr, Mo) was found to be variously affected by carbonation, owing to different mechanisms including pH changes, dissolution/precipitation of carbonates as well as sorption onto reactive mineral surfaces. The leaching test results were used to derive further considerations on the expected metal release levels on the basis of specific assumptions on the relevant pH domains for the untreated and carbonated slag.

    The electric response to an external periodic voltage of small amplitude of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) made up with an alternative architecture has been investigated. DSCs have been fabricated with a reversible sealing structure, based on microfluidic concepts, with a precise control on the geometric parameters of the active chamber. Cells with different electrolyte thicknesses have been characterized, without varying the thickness of the TiO2layer, both under illumination and in dark conditions. Measurements of the electric impedance have been performed in the presence of an external bias ranging from 0 V to 0.8 V. The experimental data have been analyzed in terms of a transmission line model, with two transport channels. The results show that the photovoltaic performances of the microfluidic cell are comparable with those obtained in irreversibly sealed structures, actually demonstrating the reliability of the proposed device.

    The assessment of the ‘quality’ of built heritage is a complex transdisciplinary issue, which both public administrations and real estate developers need to carefully consider when making any interventions. Recent international climate regulations underline that currently around 75% of buildings in the EU are not energy efficient. In Italy, those inefficient buildings are more than 50 years old and, if subjected to retrofit interventions, risk being totally transformed and losing their historical value in favor of a more contemporary use. This work aimed to study the residential heritage of the second half of the 20th century in the real estate market and to understand if, how, and in what measure the building and architectonical qualities are recognized and monetized by buyers. The city of Turin was chosen as a study area, and residential building qualities were analyzed using two quality indicators to perform a GWR on market POIs. The results highlighted that housing historical qualities are not homogeneously recognized by the real estate market, in favor of green ones. This work can help both public and private bodies to identify which ‘invisible’ quality residential buildings are immediately exploitable for enhancement strategies, with more respectful retrofitting interventions and a modern protection policy.

    In recent years, deregulation in the power generation market worldwide combined with significant variation in fuel prices and a need for flexibility in terms of power augmentation specially during periods of high electricity demand (summer months or noon to 6 PM) has forced electric utilities, cogenerators and independent power producers to explore new power generation enhancement technologies. In the last 5–10 years, inlet fogging approach has shown more promising results to recover lost power output due to increased ambient temperature compared to the other available power enhancement techniques. This paper presents the first systematic study on the effects of both inlet evaporative and overspray fogging on a wide range of combined cycle power plants utilizing gas turbines available from the major gas turbine manufacturers worldwide. A brief discussion on the thermodynamic considerations of inlet and overspray fogging including the effect of droplet dimension is also presented. Based on the analyzed systems, the results show that high pressure inlet fogging influences performance of a combined cycle power plant using an aero-derivative gas turbine differently than with an advanced technology or a traditional gas turbine. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed.

    Abstract In this paper, we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of energy poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually facing affordability problems. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made available, shows that, regardless of the affordability index adopted, the provision of state energy benefits has little impact on fuel poverty.

    This paper deals with wave energy conversion in shallow water, analyzing the performance of two different oscillating-body systems. The first one is a heaving float, which is a system known in the literature. The second one is obtained by coupling the heaving float with a surging paddle. In order to check the different behaviors of the multibody system and the single-body heaving float, physical models of the two systems have been tested in a wave flume, by placing them at various water depths along a sloping bottom. The systems have been tested with monochromatic waves. For each water depth, several tests have been performed varying the geometrical and mechanical parameters of the two systems, in order to find their best configurations. It has been found that the multibody system is more energetic when the float and the paddle are close to each other. Capture width ratio has been found to significantly vary with water depth for both systems: in particular, capture width ratio of the heaving float (also within the multibody system) increases as water depth increases, while capture width ratio of the paddle (within the multibody system) increases as water depth decreases. At the end, the capture width ratio of the multibody system is almost always higher than that of the heaving float, and it increases as water depth increases on average; however, the multibody advantage over single body is significant for water depth less than the characteristic dimension of the system, and decreases as water depth increases.

    The Galapagos Islands have been declared a World Heritage site due to their unique biodiversity, which makes them a living museum and a natural laboratory for humankind. However, to fulfill the energy needs of its habitants and foreign visitors, the islands have depended on fossil fuel energies that have produced levels of lead and chemical agents that are affecting the islands’ air quality, flora, and fauna. Therefore, zero-carbon initiatives have been created to protect the islands, wherein solar and wind power plants have been studied as reliable alternatives. In this way, Geographical Information Systems based on Multicriteria Decision Methods constitute a methodology that minimizes the destruction and disturbance of nature in order to assess the best location for the implementation of these alternative energy sources. Therefore, by exploring the geographical information along with the Analytical Hierarchical Processes and the Ordered Weighted Average methods, it was possible to identify the potential for solar power plants of 10 MW on each island; likewise, for wind power plants, it was found that the islands possess implementation potential that has been analyzed in the field, showing that the best location is on Baltra Island, but is not limited to it.
