    The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four ways of energy-saving technology implementation were determined for the control of blast furnace melting based on the data on the burden surface texture and previously unknown regularities of surface layer formation of burden material on the throat of an operating blast furnace with a bell-type charging device. The main idea of the paper is the development of automated control for the radial distribution of burden material and gas flow using actual or predicted surface texture parameters as important intermediate factors that both describe the process and have a significant simultaneous influence on it.

    Construction involves the use of significant quantities of raw materials and entails high-energy consumption. For the sake of choosing the most appropriate solution that considers environmental and sustainable concepts, tools such as the integrated value model for sustainable assessment (Modelo Integrado de Valor para una Evaluación Sostenible, MIVES) used in Spain, plays a key role in obtaining the best solution. MIVES is a multi-criteria decision-making method based on the value function concept and the seminars delivered by experts. Such tools, in order to show how they may work, require application to case studies. In this paper, two concrete slabs manufactured with differing reinforcements during the construction of the La Canda Tunnels are compared by means of MIVES. The two concrete slabs were reinforced with a conventional steel-mesh and with polyolefin fibres. This research was focussed on the main aspects affecting the construction. That is to say, the environmental, economic, and social factors were assessed by the method, being of special impact the issues related with maintenance of the structure. The results showed that from the point of view of sustainability, the use of polyolefin fibres provided a significant advantage, mainly due to the lower maintenance required.

    The energy considered as waste heat in industrial furnaces owing to inefficiencies represents a substantial opportunity for recovery by means of thermal energy storage (TES) implementation. Although conventional systems based on sensible heat are used extensively, these systems involve technical limitations. Latent heat storage based on phase change materials (PCMs) results in a promising alternative for storing and recovering waste heat. Within this scope, the proposed PCM-TES allows for demonstrating its implementation feasibility in energy-intensive industries at high temperature range. The stored energy is meant to preheat the air temperature entering the furnace by using a PCM whose melting point is 885 °C. In this sense, a heat transfer model simulation is established to determine an appropriate design based on mass and energy conservation equations. The thermal performance is analysed for the melting and solidification processes, the phase transition and its influence on heat transference. Moreover, the temperature profile is illustrated for the PCM and combustion air stream. The obtained results prove the achievability of very high temperature levels (from 700 to 865 °C) in the combustion air preheating in a ceramic furnace; so corroborating an energy and environmental efficiency enhancement, compared to the initial condition presenting an air outlet at 650 °C.

    El proyecto REVen “Rehabilitación energética de viviendas sociales, aplicando productos innovadores de ventana con marcado CE” (BIA2014-56650-JIN), tiene como objetivo realizar un análisis integral del impacto de la ventana en los aspectos relativos a eficiencia energética y calidad ambiental. Para caracterizar los flujos de energía y las condiciones ambientales internas se ha construido el Laboratorio REVen. Este artículo describe la construcción y la monitorización de este laboratorio analizando los datos de su primer año de funcionamiento. Los resultados permiten afirmar que se logra una mejora significativa del confort térmico obteniendo un ahorro de energía anual del 25 %.

    Considering recent environmental regulations, the need to adapt domestic biomass combustion systems to models that generate less emissions has gained relative importance. The present research proposes an analysis of the bed cooling effects on emission patterns, specifically focusing on the concentration, typology and morphological aspects of the released particles. The study was carried out by comparing the behaviour of a small-scale pilot plant with air stratification, with and without bed cooling. The results revealed an optimal behaviour of the facility with distributions of 30% primary-70% secondary air, accompanied by a significant decrease in emissions due to the reduction in the operating temperatures. More than 75% of the particles were retained in the bed on the cooled surfaces due to the effect of the prominent temperature gradient that was produced. Among the types of emitted particles (mostly with sizes below 0.1 μm), the presence of partial biomass degradation remnants was observed, representing three-quarters of the total collected matter. To a lesser extent, the presence of carbonaceous agglomerates was detected and usually in very compact clusters; however, in cases of high primary air supply, large amounts of immature soot were observed.     Abstract In this paper, a general mathematical model for the dynamic simulation of a single-effect LiBr/water absorption chiller is presented. The model is based on mass and energy balances applied to the internal components of the machine, and it accounts for the non-steady behaviour due to thermal and mass storage in the components. The validation of the mathematical model is performed through experimental data collected on a commercial small-capacity water-cooled unit. Due to the peculiar technology adopted in the real chiller, a special effort was made to identify the appropriate values of the main physical parameters. The validation of the model is based on the values of the water temperature at the outlet of the machine, as no measurement inside the machine was possible; anyway, a consistency analysis applied to the internal parameters is also presented. The agreement between experimental and simulated results is very good, both on a daily and on a seasonal basis.

    Municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Spain, particularly in the Valencian Community, heavily relies on mechanical–biological treatment (MBT) plants followed by landfill disposal. These MBT facilities utilize mechanical processes like shredding, screening, and sorting to segregate recyclables (metals, plastics, paper) from organic material and other nonrecyclables. While public funding supports these plants, private entities manage them through complex, long-term concession contracts. This structure restricts access to crucial data on the sale prices of the byproducts generated during MBT. Publicly available information on relevant company and administration websites is typically absent, hindering transparency surrounding byproduct revenue. This study addresses this gap by analyzing 2012’s available data on revenues obtained from byproduct sales following mechanical treatment at MBT plants within the Valencian Community and comparing them with Spanish national data. This research revealed a significant finding—the statistical distribution of average prices obtained from Ecoembes auctions in the Valencian Community mirrored the corresponding distribution for prices calculated from auctions conducted in other Spanish regions. This suggests a potential uniformity in byproduct pricing across the country. It has also been found that none of the analyzed price distributions exhibited a normal (Gaussian) distribution. The findings also highlight the need for alternative pricing models that move beyond simple averages and account for regional variations and outliers. As actual prices are not available after 2012, this lack of transparency poses a challenge in comprehensively evaluating the economic viability of MBT plants. Furthermore, it raises concerns regarding whether the revenue generated from byproduct sales reflects fair market value. Limited public access to this information can potentially indicate conflicts of interest or inefficiencies within the waste management system.

    The utilisation of thermoelectric technology as a heat pump in heating applications necessitates comprehensive investigation. The scalable nature of thermoelectric technology enables its operation at elevated temperatures without the requirement of refrigerants. In this work, an accurate computational model that can simulate one- and two-stage thermoelectric heat pumps is developed. This model uses the electric-thermal analogy and the finite difference method, including the thermoelectric effects, temperature dependent properties, thermal contact resistances and all heat exchangers, even the intermediate heat exchanger in the case of a two-stage configuration. Moreover, the model has been experimentally validated by built and tested prototypes, being the first time that a two-stage thermoelectric heat pump model is experimentally validated. The discrepancy between the simulated and experimental results is below the ± 10 % for , ± 8 % for generated heat and temperature lift in the airflow, and less than the ± 6 % for consumed power. Additonally, the model simulates real tendencies under different operating conditions, proving the reliability of the developed thermoelectric heat pump model. Finally, the model is used to optimise a thermoelectric system combining one- and two-stage thermoelectric heat pumps, and hybridising them with electric resistances. An airflow of 16.5 m3/h is heated from 25 °C to 160 °C, achieving a maximum of 1.21. Lastly, the importance of considering the thermal resistances of the heat exchangers is computationally modelled and demonstrated. Not taking them into account would overestimate the performance of the TEHP system by more than the 7 %.     Recycled waste materials obtained from industrial and agricultural processes are becoming promising thermal and acoustic insulating solutions in building applications; their use can play an important role in the environmental impact reduction. The aim of the present paper is the evaluation of the thermal performance of recycled waste panels consisting of cork scraps, rice husk, coffee chaff, and end-life granulated tires, glued in different weight ratios and pressed. Six panels obtained from the mixing of these waste materials were fabricated and analyzed. In particular, the scope is the selection of the best compromise solutions from the thermal and environmental points of view. To this aim, thermal resistances were measured in laboratory and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis was carried out for each panel; a cross-comparative examination was performed in order to optimize their properties and find the best panels solutions to be assembled in the future. Life Cycle Analysis was carried out in terms of primary Embodied Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions, considering a ‘‘cradle-to-gate” approach. The obtained thermal conductivities varied in the 0.055 to 0.135 W/mK range, in the same order of magnitude of many traditional systems. The best thermal results were obtained for the panels made of granulated cork, rice husk, and coffee chaff in this order. The rubber granulate showed higher values of the thermal conductivity (about 0.15 W/mK); a very interesting combined solution was the panel composed of cork (60%), rice husk (20%), and coffee chaff (20%), with a thermal conductivity of 0.08 W/mK and a Global Warming Potential of only 2.6 kg CO2eq/m2. Considering the Embodied Energy (CED), the best solution is a panel composed of 56% of cork and 44% of coffee chaff (minimum CED and thermal conductivity).

    The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four ways of energy-saving technology implementation were determined for the control of blast furnace melting based on the data on the burden surface texture and previously unknown regularities of surface layer formation of burden material on the throat of an operating blast furnace with a bell-type charging device. The main idea of the paper is the development of automated control for the radial distribution of burden material and gas flow using actual or predicted surface texture parameters as important intermediate factors that both describe the process and have a significant simultaneous influence on it.

    Construction involves the use of significant quantities of raw materials and entails high-energy consumption. For the sake of choosing the most appropriate solution that considers environmental and sustainable concepts, tools such as the integrated value model for sustainable assessment (Modelo Integrado de Valor para una Evaluación Sostenible, MIVES) used in Spain, plays a key role in obtaining the best solution. MIVES is a multi-criteria decision-making method based on the value function concept and the seminars delivered by experts. Such tools, in order to show how they may work, require application to case studies. In this paper, two concrete slabs manufactured with differing reinforcements during the construction of the La Canda Tunnels are compared by means of MIVES. The two concrete slabs were reinforced with a conventional steel-mesh and with polyolefin fibres. This research was focussed on the main aspects affecting the construction. That is to say, the environmental, economic, and social factors were assessed by the method, being of special impact the issues related with maintenance of the structure. The results showed that from the point of view of sustainability, the use of polyolefin fibres provided a significant advantage, mainly due to the lower maintenance required.

    The energy considered as waste heat in industrial furnaces owing to inefficiencies represents a substantial opportunity for recovery by means of thermal energy storage (TES) implementation. Although conventional systems based on sensible heat are used extensively, these systems involve technical limitations. Latent heat storage based on phase change materials (PCMs) results in a promising alternative for storing and recovering waste heat. Within this scope, the proposed PCM-TES allows for demonstrating its implementation feasibility in energy-intensive industries at high temperature range. The stored energy is meant to preheat the air temperature entering the furnace by using a PCM whose melting point is 885 °C. In this sense, a heat transfer model simulation is established to determine an appropriate design based on mass and energy conservation equations. The thermal performance is analysed for the melting and solidification processes, the phase transition and its influence on heat transference. Moreover, the temperature profile is illustrated for the PCM and combustion air stream. The obtained results prove the achievability of very high temperature levels (from 700 to 865 °C) in the combustion air preheating in a ceramic furnace; so corroborating an energy and environmental efficiency enhancement, compared to the initial condition presenting an air outlet at 650 °C.

    El proyecto REVen “Rehabilitación energética de viviendas sociales, aplicando productos innovadores de ventana con marcado CE” (BIA2014-56650-JIN), tiene como objetivo realizar un análisis integral del impacto de la ventana en los aspectos relativos a eficiencia energética y calidad ambiental. Para caracterizar los flujos de energía y las condiciones ambientales internas se ha construido el Laboratorio REVen. Este artículo describe la construcción y la monitorización de este laboratorio analizando los datos de su primer año de funcionamiento. Los resultados permiten afirmar que se logra una mejora significativa del confort térmico obteniendo un ahorro de energía anual del 25 %.

    Considering recent environmental regulations, the need to adapt domestic biomass combustion systems to models that generate less emissions has gained relative importance. The present research proposes an analysis of the bed cooling effects on emission patterns, specifically focusing on the concentration, typology and morphological aspects of the released particles. The study was carried out by comparing the behaviour of a small-scale pilot plant with air stratification, with and without bed cooling. The results revealed an optimal behaviour of the facility with distributions of 30% primary-70% secondary air, accompanied by a significant decrease in emissions due to the reduction in the operating temperatures. More than 75% of the particles were retained in the bed on the cooled surfaces due to the effect of the prominent temperature gradient that was produced. Among the types of emitted particles (mostly with sizes below 0.1 μm), the presence of partial biomass degradation remnants was observed, representing three-quarters of the total collected matter. To a lesser extent, the presence of carbonaceous agglomerates was detected and usually in very compact clusters; however, in cases of high primary air supply, large amounts of immature soot were observed.     Abstract In this paper, a general mathematical model for the dynamic simulation of a single-effect LiBr/water absorption chiller is presented. The model is based on mass and energy balances applied to the internal components of the machine, and it accounts for the non-steady behaviour due to thermal and mass storage in the components. The validation of the mathematical model is performed through experimental data collected on a commercial small-capacity water-cooled unit. Due to the peculiar technology adopted in the real chiller, a special effort was made to identify the appropriate values of the main physical parameters. The validation of the model is based on the values of the water temperature at the outlet of the machine, as no measurement inside the machine was possible; anyway, a consistency analysis applied to the internal parameters is also presented. The agreement between experimental and simulated results is very good, both on a daily and on a seasonal basis.

    Municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Spain, particularly in the Valencian Community, heavily relies on mechanical–biological treatment (MBT) plants followed by landfill disposal. These MBT facilities utilize mechanical processes like shredding, screening, and sorting to segregate recyclables (metals, plastics, paper) from organic material and other nonrecyclables. While public funding supports these plants, private entities manage them through complex, long-term concession contracts. This structure restricts access to crucial data on the sale prices of the byproducts generated during MBT. Publicly available information on relevant company and administration websites is typically absent, hindering transparency surrounding byproduct revenue. This study addresses this gap by analyzing 2012’s available data on revenues obtained from byproduct sales following mechanical treatment at MBT plants within the Valencian Community and comparing them with Spanish national data. This research revealed a significant finding—the statistical distribution of average prices obtained from Ecoembes auctions in the Valencian Community mirrored the corresponding distribution for prices calculated from auctions conducted in other Spanish regions. This suggests a potential uniformity in byproduct pricing across the country. It has also been found that none of the analyzed price distributions exhibited a normal (Gaussian) distribution. The findings also highlight the need for alternative pricing models that move beyond simple averages and account for regional variations and outliers. As actual prices are not available after 2012, this lack of transparency poses a challenge in comprehensively evaluating the economic viability of MBT plants. Furthermore, it raises concerns regarding whether the revenue generated from byproduct sales reflects fair market value. Limited public access to this information can potentially indicate conflicts of interest or inefficiencies within the waste management system.

    The utilisation of thermoelectric technology as a heat pump in heating applications necessitates comprehensive investigation. The scalable nature of thermoelectric technology enables its operation at elevated temperatures without the requirement of refrigerants. In this work, an accurate computational model that can simulate one- and two-stage thermoelectric heat pumps is developed. This model uses the electric-thermal analogy and the finite difference method, including the thermoelectric effects, temperature dependent properties, thermal contact resistances and all heat exchangers, even the intermediate heat exchanger in the case of a two-stage configuration. Moreover, the model has been experimentally validated by built and tested prototypes, being the first time that a two-stage thermoelectric heat pump model is experimentally validated. The discrepancy between the simulated and experimental results is below the ± 10 % for , ± 8 % for generated heat and temperature lift in the airflow, and less than the ± 6 % for consumed power. Additonally, the model simulates real tendencies under different operating conditions, proving the reliability of the developed thermoelectric heat pump model. Finally, the model is used to optimise a thermoelectric system combining one- and two-stage thermoelectric heat pumps, and hybridising them with electric resistances. An airflow of 16.5 m3/h is heated from 25 °C to 160 °C, achieving a maximum of 1.21. Lastly, the importance of considering the thermal resistances of the heat exchangers is computationally modelled and demonstrated. Not taking them into account would overestimate the performance of the TEHP system by more than the 7 %.     Recycled waste materials obtained from industrial and agricultural processes are becoming promising thermal and acoustic insulating solutions in building applications; their use can play an important role in the environmental impact reduction. The aim of the present paper is the evaluation of the thermal performance of recycled waste panels consisting of cork scraps, rice husk, coffee chaff, and end-life granulated tires, glued in different weight ratios and pressed. Six panels obtained from the mixing of these waste materials were fabricated and analyzed. In particular, the scope is the selection of the best compromise solutions from the thermal and environmental points of view. To this aim, thermal resistances were measured in laboratory and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis was carried out for each panel; a cross-comparative examination was performed in order to optimize their properties and find the best panels solutions to be assembled in the future. Life Cycle Analysis was carried out in terms of primary Embodied Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions, considering a ‘‘cradle-to-gate” approach. The obtained thermal conductivities varied in the 0.055 to 0.135 W/mK range, in the same order of magnitude of many traditional systems. The best thermal results were obtained for the panels made of granulated cork, rice husk, and coffee chaff in this order. The rubber granulate showed higher values of the thermal conductivity (about 0.15 W/mK); a very interesting combined solution was the panel composed of cork (60%), rice husk (20%), and coffee chaff (20%), with a thermal conductivity of 0.08 W/mK and a Global Warming Potential of only 2.6 kg CO2eq/m2. Considering the Embodied Energy (CED), the best solution is a panel composed of 56% of cork and 44% of coffee chaff (minimum CED and thermal conductivity).

    Flare stacks are a key element in the safety of petrochemical and refinery industries; the correct operating conditions thereof must be ensured through a schedule for the periodic reviewing of all parts thereof.
