description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2024 SpainPublisher:Editorial Universidad de Sevilla This paper addresses some questions that climate change raises for international law. It focuses in particular on the request for an advisory opinion submitted by the United Nations General Assembly to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 29 March 2023. This request is analysed as a further manifestation of the international community’s concern to clarify the international responsibility of states to prevent, mitigate and remedy the damage caused by climate change. The study argues that the ICJ could clarify obligations under existing treaties. There may also be a particular opportunity for the Court to expand its jurisprudence on other sources of international law. In particular, it asks whether the ICJ could confirm the emergence of a specific customary rule on the issue.

SummaryInequality has recently become a major concern in economics. Leaving aside its social and economic effects is also possible to trace its environmental consequences, which this article attempts to assess. The indicator to be measured is the household's carbon footprint (CF) for different social groups. The deep economic crisis in the Spanish economy between 2008 and 2013 has increased consumption inequality and doubled the number of households below the poverty line. When focusing on domestic consumption, we found that the shopping basket of all income groups has very similar emissions intensities; therefore, the differences among the household CFs depend mainly on the scale effect (i.e., the size of consumption). However, when international trade is also considered, we found that the emission intensity of imports is bigger than the intensity of all the respective domestic goods. Therefore, the share of imported goods and services by social class will be an important determinant of the respective total CF. Before the crisis, households with higher incomes imported 30% of their total consumption items whereas households with lower income imported only 20% of their consumption. During the crisis, the imports of medium‐high‐income households fell to 20%, whereas low‐ and middle‐income families maintained the same import share, which contributed to the reduction of the total household CF.

Nowadays, the issues related with environment preservation assume an increasing importance. Progressively, more sustainable solutions/techniques are being developed to combat environmental destruction. The decision to include themes related to the environment in the curriculum of technological courses in higher education aims to promote more sustainable behaviors and in an indirect way, increase the environmental literacy of the population. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the environmental literacy focusing on four topics, i.e., air pollution, water pollution, global warming, and energy resources. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed and applied to a convenience sample, formed by individuals of both genders, aged between 20 and 81 years old. The questionnaire intended to collect data to characterize the sample and assess the literacy regarding environmental issues. In order to carry out the environmental literacy assessment, the respondents were asked to express their degree of agreement with some statements related with the environmental themes mentioned above. The data collected was analyzed using data mining tools. The results suggest that the population’s literacy is satisfactory in relation to some issues, but insufficient in relation to others, equally important, but less disseminated.

Following a decade of advancement, Cu2O photocathodes are capable of delivering a performance comparable to that of photoelectrodes with established photovoltaic materials3–5. However, considerable bulk charge carrier recombination that is poorly understood still limits further advances in performance6. Here we demonstrate performance of Cu2O photocathodes beyond the state-of-the-art by exploiting a new conceptual understanding of carrier recombination and transport in single-crystal Cu2O thin films. Using ambient liquid-phase epitaxy, we present a new method to grow single-crystal Cu2O samples with three crystal orientations. Broadband femtosecond transient reflection spectroscopy measurements were used to quantify anisotropic optoelectronic properties, through which the carrier mobility along the [111] direction was found to be an order of magnitude higher than those along other orientations. Driven by these findings, we developed a polycrystalline Cu2O photocathode with an extraordinarily pure (111) orientation and (111) terminating facets using a simple and low-cost method, which delivers 7 mA cm−2 current density (more than 70% improvement compared to that of state-of-the-art electrodeposited devices) at 0.5 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode under air mass 1.5 G illumination, and stable operation over at least 120 h.

Whiffen, Radenka Krsmanovic in OpenAIREPyroelectric energy harvesting has the ability to transform wasted heat into useful energy and as such has a potential to create “green” energy from freely available sources such as ambient temperature changes, and contribute to the fight against climate change. Current pyroelectrics applications are limited to low-power electronics, portable systems or tasks needing only very low range of power (μW–mW). Developing further this highly promising technology should ultimately lead to the creation of more powerful, autonomous and self-powered electronic devices that could one day use to recycle currently “lost” thermal energy to power electronic devices in both domestic and industrial settings. To the best of our knowledge, hexagonal phase ZnS (wurtzite ZnS) has not been studied as a possible energy harvesting pyroelectric material despite w-ZnS being isostructural to the well-exploited and widely praised hexagonal ZnO [1]. In addition, the Tc temperature (1020 ˚C for bulk material) is high enough for ZnS that it has the ability to operate at higher temperature that are good match with the working temperature of power plants and automobiles, and hence w-ZnS ceramics should have a potential to be used in pyroelectric harvesters of waste heat coming from those activities [2]. Here we report on the pyroelectric output registered for a wurtzite phase ZnS ceramic fabricated as part of our project. To probe the pyroelectric output for a w-ZnS ceramic a simple device (a “pyro-cell”) was created by evaporating gold electrods on both sides of a ceramic sample, which was mounted on a Cu-metalized rectangular insulating base (vetronite) using silver paint. This device is stable from room temperature up to approximately 180°C. Two different heating and cooling testing set-ups were established: Set-up n°1 used an industrial scale laser, providing a source with fast temperature change, and Set-up n°2 had a standard lab hot plate heating element, providing a much slower temperature change. The characterization required an accurate measurement of the currents of the order of 10-9 A. In addition, using the Pyroelectric Test System (PK‐SPIV17T, State College, PA, USA) with a Keithley 6517 B Picoammeter, we were able to measure the pyroelectric coefficient and monitor its change at different frequencies as a function of temperature from 20 °C up to 150° C, with a heating rate of between 2 and 10 °C/min. Figure 1: Pyroelectric current measurements on an ZnS ceramic sample, using testing set-up n°1. The horizontal axis shows the time (seconds). References [1] Y. Yang, W. Guo, K.C. Pradel, G. Zhu, Y. Frequently, the only data available on a species is the location of its occurrence (presence-only data). Using occurrence records only, two models were used to predict the geographical distribution of two destructive invasive termite species, Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) and Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. The first model uses a Bayesian linear logistic regression approach adjusted for presence-only data while the second one is the widely used maximum entropy approach (Maxent). Results show that the predicted distributions of both C. gestroi and C. formosanus are strongly linked to urban development. The impact of future scenarios such as climate warming and population growth on the biotic distribution of both termite species was also assessed. Future climate warming seems to affect their projected probability of presence to a lesser extent than population growth. The Bayesian logistic approach outperformed Maxent consistently in all models according to evaluation criteria such as model sensitivity and ecological realism. The importance of further studies for an explicit treatment of residual spatial autocorrelation and a more comprehensive comparison between both statistical approaches is suggested.

Abstract This literature review was built upon recently published articles on Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of agricultural biogas plants, to: enhance understanding of the relevant literature in the field and the related question by readers worldwide. It was designed to highlight methodological issues and impact indicators, which best represent this research field; consequently, they should be considered in performing environmental assessments of agro-biogas derived energy systems. The literature review highlighted the wide variability of environmental results due to the ways the feedstock mixtures were produced, managed, and supplied; and due to the regions in which the anaerobic digesters were located and operated. Differences were found to be related to the aim and function of the study and to the methodological approach used, especially for the development of the environmental impact assessments. Other differences resulted from the ways the energy produced was utilised, whether it was used as an input to the natural gas national grid, and/or if it was used within the production system. The authors of this review concluded that, although much progress has been made, many unsolved challenges and methodological choices must be addressed to further improve the robustness of LCA in relation to AD and to related approaches.

From the comparison of regulations and/or standards for the organic, conventional and/or integrated citrus production method and a voluntary certification, it emerges that farms certified with voluntary non-regulated certification systems, such as the IFA FV GLOBALG.A.P, are obliged to take into account the highest number of aspects, reported in a more complete register, than the organic ones. Moreover, this is also supported by a continuous-time planned process of revision and updating of the applicable versions of the standard. The environmental impact of the food production, the safety aspects of food products, as well as the health, ethics, and safety aspects of workers, are largely considered and inspected in the GLOBALG.A.P., while the organic system, despite the IFOAM suggestions and indications, is only considered partially. This means that, from a practical point of view, the organic product can be considered “clean and safe”, but not more environmentally friendly than the GLOBALG.A.P. products.

Nowadays in current cities the increasing levels of pollution emissions and fuel consumption derived from the road traffic directly affect to the air quality, the economy, and specially the health of citizens. Therefore, improving the traffic flow is a mandatory task in order to mitigate such critical problems. In this work, we propose a Swarm Intelligence approach for optimizing signal light timing programs in metropolitan areas. In this way, we can improve the traffic flow of vehicles with the global target of reducing their fuel consumption and gas emissions (CO and NOx). In this article we optimize the timing programs of signal lights and analyze their effect in pollution by following the standard HBEFA as traffic emission model. In concrete, we are focused here on two large and heterogeneous urban instances located in the cities of Malaga and Seville (in Spain). In comparison with timing programs of signal lights predefined by experts (close to real ones), our proposal obtains significant reductions in terms of the emission rate and the total fuel consumption.
