However, flexibility provision by distributed energy resources (DERs) installed on the demand side is a cost-effective measure. In this study, we proposed a scheme that utilizes time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates as an incentive to encourage residential prosumers to provide more flexibility by controlling the DERs. In particular, we developed an energy management system model that applies model predictive control. The TOU rates were designed by an aggregator who traded with markets and prosumers. The DERs of residential prosumers were fuel cells with combined heat and power, CO2 heat pump water heaters, or batteries. Numerical simulations using measured energy demand and insolation data were performed to evaluate the performance of the developed model. According to the results, the developed model could integrate prediction errors and provide flexibility to the grid. Finally, the economies of the aggregator and prosumers were also evaluated.

Elevated temperatures and anomalous ‘heat waves’ associated with climate change have the potential to impact fish reproductive performance and, in some cases, even induce sex reversals. Here we examine how thermal sensitivity in the hormone pathways regulating reproduction provides a framework for understanding impacts of warmer conditions on fish reproduction. Such effects will differ depending on evolved variation in temperature sensitivity of endocrine pathways regulating reproductive processes of sex determination/differentiation, gametogenesis and spawning, as well as how developmental timing of those processes varies with reproductive ecology. For fish populations unable to shift geographical range, persistence under future climates may require changes in temperature responsiveness of the hormone pathways regulating reproductive processes. How thermal sensitivity in those hormone pathways varies among populations and species, how those pathways generate temperature maxima for reproduction, and how rapidly reproductive thermal tolerances can change via adaptation or transgenerational plasticity will shape which fishes are most at risk for impaired reproduction under rising temperatures. We previously performed comprehensive analyses of genes hypermethylated promoter regions and downregulated transcripts in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of rats upon weaning at postnatal day (PND) 21 after developmental exposure to 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU), valproic acid, and glycidol (GLY), all of which are known to show irreversible effects on hippocampal neurogenesis in adulthood on PND 77. Here, we selected neurotransmitter and neurogenesis-related genes for validation analysis of methylation and expression. As a result, Nrgn by GLY and Shisa7, Agtpbp1, and Cyp46a1 by PTU underwent DNA hypermethylation and sustained downregulation. Immunohistochemical analysis of candidate gene products revealed that the number of neurogranin (NRGN)+ granule cells was decreased in the ventral DG by GLY on PND 21 and 77 and by PTU on PND 21. Among the samples of developmental or 28-day young adult-age exposure to known developmental neurotoxicants in humans, i.e., lead acetate, ethanol, and aluminum chloride, a decrease of NRGN+ cells by ethanol was also observed on PND 77 after developmental exposure. Double immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that NRGN was expressed in mature granule cells, and a similar immunoreactive cell distribution was found for phosphorylated calcium/calmodulin-activated protein kinase, a NRGN downstream molecule. After developmental PTU exposure, the number of activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein+ granule cells was also profoundly decreased in the ventral DG in parallel with the decrease in NRGN+ cells on PND 21. These results suggest that NRGN is a potential marker for suppression of synaptic plasticity in mature granule cells in the ventral DG.

A high-fidelity LES code was first developed based on a high-order finite difference method and applied to the simulation. The effects of the TE cutback on the blade surface boundary layer, pressure distribution, and loss generation are then discussed on the basis of time-mean flow fields of LES. The results represent that the cutback changed the boundary layer thickness just upstream of the TE and the base pressure around the TE, resulting in larger aerodynamic loss. Next, the time-dependent flow dynamics in the cascade is investigated. The results indicate that the dominant pressure fluctuation after the blade was influenced by the cutback. Furthermore, the phase-locked flow field is analyzed to reveal the flow dynamics responsible for the pressure fluctuation. Finally, the LES approach could clarify the underlying mechanisms of performance degradation of a turbine blade that caused by TE cutback.

However, flexibility provision by distributed energy resources (DERs) installed on the demand side is a cost-effective measure. In this study, we proposed a scheme that utilizes time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates as an incentive to encourage residential prosumers to provide more flexibility by controlling the DERs. In particular, we developed an energy management system model that applies model predictive control. The TOU rates were designed by an aggregator who traded with markets and prosumers. The DERs of residential prosumers were fuel cells with combined heat and power, CO2 heat pump water heaters, or batteries. Numerical simulations using measured energy demand and insolation data were performed to evaluate the performance of the developed model. According to the results, the developed model could integrate prediction errors and provide flexibility to the grid. Finally, the economies of the aggregator and prosumers were also evaluated.

Elevated temperatures and anomalous ‘heat waves’ associated with climate change have the potential to impact fish reproductive performance and, in some cases, even induce sex reversals. Here we examine how thermal sensitivity in the hormone pathways regulating reproduction provides a framework for understanding impacts of warmer conditions on fish reproduction. Such effects will differ depending on evolved variation in temperature sensitivity of endocrine pathways regulating reproductive processes of sex determination/differentiation, gametogenesis and spawning, as well as how developmental timing of those processes varies with reproductive ecology. For fish populations unable to shift geographical range, persistence under future climates may require changes in temperature responsiveness of the hormone pathways regulating reproductive processes. How thermal sensitivity in those hormone pathways varies among populations and species, how those pathways generate temperature maxima for reproduction, and how rapidly reproductive thermal tolerances can change via adaptation or transgenerational plasticity will shape which fishes are most at risk for impaired reproduction under rising temperatures. We previously performed comprehensive analyses of genes hypermethylated promoter regions and downregulated transcripts in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of rats upon weaning at postnatal day (PND) 21 after developmental exposure to 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU), valproic acid, and glycidol (GLY), all of which are known to show irreversible effects on hippocampal neurogenesis in adulthood on PND 77. Here, we selected neurotransmitter and neurogenesis-related genes for validation analysis of methylation and expression. As a result, Nrgn by GLY and Shisa7, Agtpbp1, and Cyp46a1 by PTU underwent DNA hypermethylation and sustained downregulation. Immunohistochemical analysis of candidate gene products revealed that the number of neurogranin (NRGN)+ granule cells was decreased in the ventral DG by GLY on PND 21 and 77 and by PTU on PND 21. Among the samples of developmental or 28-day young adult-age exposure to known developmental neurotoxicants in humans, i.e., lead acetate, ethanol, and aluminum chloride, a decrease of NRGN+ cells by ethanol was also observed on PND 77 after developmental exposure. Double immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that NRGN was expressed in mature granule cells, and a similar immunoreactive cell distribution was found for phosphorylated calcium/calmodulin-activated protein kinase, a NRGN downstream molecule. After developmental PTU exposure, the number of activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein+ granule cells was also profoundly decreased in the ventral DG in parallel with the decrease in NRGN+ cells on PND 21. These results suggest that NRGN is a potential marker for suppression of synaptic plasticity in mature granule cells in the ventral DG.

We previously performed comprehensive analyses of genes hypermethylated promoter regions and downregulated transcripts in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of rats upon weaning at postnatal day (PND) 21 after developmental exposure to 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU), valproic acid, and glycidol (GLY), all of which are known to show irreversible effects on hippocampal neurogenesis in adulthood on PND 77. Here, we selected neurotransmitter and neurogenesis-related genes for validation analysis of methylation and expression. As a result, Nrgn by GLY and Shisa7, Agtpbp1, and Cyp46a1 by PTU underwent DNA hypermethylation and sustained downregulation. Immunohistochemical analysis of candidate gene products revealed that the number of neurogranin (NRGN)+ granule cells was decreased in the ventral DG by GLY on PND 21 and 77 and by PTU on PND 21. A high-fidelity LES code was first developed based on a high-order finite difference method and applied to the simulation. The effects of the TE cutback on the blade surface boundary layer, pressure distribution, and loss generation are then discussed on the basis of time-mean flow fields of LES. The results represent that the cutback changed the boundary layer thickness just upstream of the TE and the base pressure around the TE, resulting in larger aerodynamic loss. Next, the time-dependent flow dynamics in the cascade is investigated. The results indicate that the dominant pressure fluctuation after the blade was influenced by the cutback. Furthermore, the phase-locked flow field is analyzed to reveal the flow dynamics responsible for the pressure fluctuation. Finally, the LES approach could clarify the underlying mechanisms of performance degradation of a turbine blade that caused by TE cutback.
