The design of a solar thermal installation is based on the lowest irradiance levels that occur during winter. However, there are consecutive days with irradiance levels well below those used for the design, which are called in this work “critical irradiance levels”. To solve this challenge, a statistical analysis is carried out to find a representative percentile of 22 years of consecutive days with “critical irradiance levels”. A case study of a cotton-dyeing industrial process requires 18.5 m3 of hot water and operates for 2.75 h at temperatures between 40 and 90 °C. Environmental variables for 22 years were analyzed and validated to design a solar thermal installation (solar collector network and storage system) and a coupled heat pump. The fifth percentile, with three consecutive days and low irradiance levels, was the most repetitive. For this case, a storage system of 46.5 m3 guaranteed heat load at target temperature. The simple payback was 14.1 years, and the energy cost was 0.094 USD/kWh, which was competitive against the energy cost from using fossil fuels, 0.064 USD/kWh. The design based on critical environmental conditions guarantees a continuous supply of energy to the industrial process and defines the minimum availability of solar energy to supply a process.

The article presents an innovative method of analyzing energy companies’ strategies, which aims to identify the strategic orientation of the entities subject to the research and, thus, to initially define the directions of strategic changes in the analyzed sector. The aim of the research, the results of which were used in this publication, was to identify the features of energy sector companies’ strategies in the European Union in the period of sector transformation caused by the new climate policy. The analysis area is the energy sector, i.e., the sector whose fundamental strategic goal is energy production. The research used a critical analysis of the subject literature and desk research method with the use of the researchers’ own analytical equipment, developed for the needs of this analysis. It was assumed in the conducted research that the primary source of information in the empirical study, the information subject to subsequent analysis, was the analysis of official documents (strategies, financial reports, etc.) posted on the websites of the surveyed corporations. The research results indicate the dominance of the resource-based approach in implementing strategic postulates of the surveyed companies. Nevertheless, the operational activity focuses on the implementation of innovative solutions towards decarbonization and climate neutrality.

This work focuses on subcooled boiling heat transfer during flow in a minichannel heat sink with three or five minichannels of 1 mm depth. The heated element for FC-72 flowing along the minichannels was a thin foil of which temperature on the outer surface was measured due to the infrared thermography. The test section was oriented vertically or horizontally. A steady state heat transfer process and a laminar, incompressible flow of the fluid in a central minichannel were assumed. The heat transfer problem was described by the energy equations with an appropriate system of boundary conditions. Several mathematical methods were applied to solve the heat transfer problem with the Robin condition to determine the local heat transfer coefficients at the fluid/heated foil interface. Besides the 1D approach as a simple analytical method, a more sophisticated 2D approach was proposed with solutions by the Trefftz functions and ADINA software. Finite element method (FEM) calculations were conducted to find the temperature field in the flowing fluid and in the heated wall. The results were illustrated by graphs of local heated foil temperature and transfer coefficients as a function of the distance from the minichannel inlet. Temperature distributions in the heater and the fluid obtained from the FEM computations carried out by ADINA software were also shown. Similar values of the heat transfer coefficient were obtained in both the FEM calculations and the 1D approach. Example boiling curves indicating nucleation hysteresis are shown and discussed.

Accurately predicting oilfield development indicators (such as oil production, liquid production, current formation pressure, water cut, oil production rate, recovery rate, cost, profit, etc.) is to realize the rational and scientific development of oilfields, which is an important basis to ensure the stable production of the oilfield. Due to existing oilfield development index prediction methods being difficult to accurately reflect the complex nonlinear problem in the oil field development process, using the artificial neural network, which can predict the oilfield development index with the function of infinitely close to any non-linear function, will be the most ideal prediction method at present. This article summarizes four commonly used artificial neural networks: the BP neural network, the radial basis neural network, the generalized regression neural network, and the wavelet neural network, and mainly introduces their network structure, function types, calculation process and prediction results. Four kinds of artificial neural networks are optimized through various intelligent algorithms, and the principle and essence of optimization are analyzed. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of the four artificial neural networks are summarized and compared. Finally, based on the application of artificial neural networks in other fields and on existing problems, a future development direction is proposed which can serve as a reference and guide for the research on accurate prediction of oilfield development indicators.

The conventional control method for a single-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel converter is vector (dq) control; however, dq control requires complicated calculations and additional time delays. This paper presents a novel power control strategy for the CHB multilevel converter. A power-based dc-link voltage balance control is also proposed for unbalanced load conditions. The new control method is designed in a virtual αβ stationary reference frame without coordinate transformation or phase-locked loop (PLL) to avoid the potential issues related to computational complexity. Because only imaginary voltage construction is needed in the proposed control method, the time delay from conventional imaginary current construction can be eliminated. The proposed method can obtain a sinusoidal grid current waveform with unity power factor. Compared with the conventional dq control method, the power control strategy possesses the advantage of a fast dynamic response. The stability of the closed-loop system with the dc-link voltage balance controller is evaluated. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the accuracy of the proposed power and voltage control method.

Several natural threats characterize hard coal mining in Poland. The coexistence of methane and rock-burst hazards lowers the safety level during exploration. The most dangerous are high-energy bumps, which might cause rock-burst. Additionally, created during exploitation, safety pillars, which protect openings, might be the reason for the formation of so-called gas traps. In this part, rock mass is usually not disturbed and methane in seams that form the safety pillars is not dangerous as long as they remain intact. Nevertheless, during a rock-burst, a sudden methane outflow can occur. Preventing the existing hazards increases mining costs, and employing inadequate measures threatens the employees’ lives and limbs. Using two longwalls as examples, the authors discuss the consequences of the two natural hazards’ coexistence. In the area of longwall H-4 in seam 409/4, a rock-burst caused a release of approximately 545,000 cubic meters of methane into the excavations, which tripled methane concentration compared to the values from the period preceding the burst. In the second longwall (IV in seam 703/1), a bump was followed by a rock-burst, which reduced the amount of air flowing through the excavation by 30 percent compared to the airflow before, and methane release rose by 60 percent. The analyses presented in this article justify that research is needed to create and implement innovative methods of methane drainage from coal seams to capture methane more effectively at the stage of mining.

A natural radioactivity in thermal water was investigated based on 19 selected thermal waters from Poland. The analysed results show that the radionuclides’ concentrations in the study waters vary over a wide range. The temperature of the waters varies from above 20 °C to above 80 °C. The waters are characterised by different mineralisation, chemical compositions, and belong to different hydrochemical types. There is a good correlation between the water temperature and the depths of the aquifer formations occurrence, suggesting the thermal energy originates from the thermal geogradient. The concentration of radium is well correlated with the water mineralisation. The ratio of radium activity (226Ra/228Ra) in groundwater relates not only the ratio of uranium activity to that of thorium (238U/232Th) in aquifer formation, but also depends on the physical and chemical water properties. Based on the concentration of radon and its transport model, the radiation exposures due to inhalation of 222Rn and its progeny for employees and clients of the spa were assessed. The use of the thermal waters as a drinking resource may be problematic due to the possibility of exceeding the recommended annual committed effective dose 0.1 mSv.

Efficient vehicle routing is a major concern for any supply chain, especially when dealing with last-mile deliveries in highly urbanized areas. In this paper problems considering last-mile delivery in areas with the restrictions of motorized traffic are described and different types of cargo bikes are reviewed. The paper describes methods developed in order to solve a combination of problems for cargo bicycle logistics, including efficient packing, routing and load-dependent speed constraints. Proposed models apply mathematical descriptions of problems, including the Knapsack Problem, Traveling Salesman Problem and Traveling Thief Problem. Based on synthetically generated data, we study the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Models described in this paper are implemented in Python programming language and will be further developed and used for solving the problems of electric cargo bikes’ routing under real-world conditions.

This article presents the results of the studies on negative streamer propagation in a point-to-sphere electrode system with a pressboard barrier placed between them. The proposed electrode system gave the opportunity to assess the influence of the insulating barrier on streamer development in the conditions close to the actual transformer insulating system where the liquid gap is typically divided in parts by using pressboard barriers. The studies were performed for five commercial dielectric liquids. Among them two were biodegradable synthetic esters and two were biodegradable natural esters. Mineral oil, as the fifth liquid, was used for comparison. The measurements were based on electrical and optical experimental techniques. From the results obtained it may be concluded that, independently of the liquids tested, the electrical strength of the insulating system considered was increased by about 50%. In the case of streamer development assessed using photomultiplier-based light registration it is not possible to indicate clearly which of the liquids tested is better under the conditions of the experiment. In all cases streamers always developed slowly (2nd mode) at all voltage levels applied during the studies. In turn, the intensity of the discharge processes, comparing the same voltage levels, was mostly higher when streamers developed in ester liquids, however, the differences noticed were minimal.
