Ciniviz, M. in OpenAIREAbstract In internal combustion engines, mineral engine oils which serve as lubricants between parts are not used alone due to technical reasons and various additives are made use of for better lubrication. In these additives, liquid boron serves to reduce friction. To reduce the environmental damage caused by engine lubrication oils, it is necessary to improve the properties of biological oils so that they can be used and compete with mineral oils technically. In the study, the use of liquid boron as an engine lubrication oil additive, together with wild mustard oil methyl ester, was investigated. Two diesel engines with the same characteristics were used. In the first engine, experiments were carried out using mineral lubrication oil, then the experiments were repeated using mineral oil with additives, and the results were compared for both situations. The study was conducted mainly in the fields of element analysis of endoscopic examination and lubricating oil (Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cr). As a result, it was found out that the engine in which mineral lubricating oil with boron and wild mustard oil methyl ester additive was used did not pose any risks in terms of wear and engine oil life, compared to the engine without additive lubricating oil.

Various environmentally friendly additives have been used to mitigate significant damage, such as plastic deformation and cracking, in asphalt pavements over the long term. Despite the existence of research demonstrating the efficacy of the materials for asphalt mixture, there has been a lack of studies focusing on the recycling of modified asphalt binders. Therefore, this study conveys the laboratory evaluation of the high-temperature properties of 12 recycled polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders as basic research. The data evaluation was carried out using crumb rubber modifier (CRM), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) modified binders, depending on their recycled binders. To assess the properties of each binder, the viscosity and viscoelasticity were measured. Overall, the results of this study revealed that (1) an increasing trend for the viscosity of all asphalt binders was seen as the recycled binder was added and showed their characteristics depending on modifiers; (2) the tendency for using each modified binder in the original and rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) condition appeared for modifiers to have their properties when reusing them; (3) from the Jnr and %rec values, each property of modifiers kept its inherent characteristics, but a potential limit was seen in that a styrene block copolymer was mainly effective on this test method. To sum up, modifiers in asphalt mixture can have their unique properties even after reusing them in recycled asphalt mixture. Therefore, it is recommended that modifiers in asphalt mixture are considered as a potential factor in utilizing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).

Javad Mehdipour Ghazi in OpenAIREThe abundance and diversity of mineralization in Iran form the foundation of Iran's rich history of mining. The mining sites have geo-scientific, industrial, cultural, social, economical, historical and anthropological potentials for development of tourism. Using these potentials is very important for rural sustainable development. In this paper we suggest developing tourism in the mining sites within the framework of geotourism in Iran. The geological, cultural and historical aspects of ancient mines and current mining sites are discussed. Furthermore, their geotouristic potentials (like historic mining industry and buildings, exploration or extraction tunnels, minerals, signatures of mineralization types) are discussed within a broader sustainable development picture of Iran. We propose how Iran's rich mining heritage provides a valuable basis for tourism development and creates potential for more diverse employment opportunities. Developing and planning tourism in mining sites entails strategic implementation of public education on geological processes, cultural and historical evolutions, asserting the value and originality of mining sites and calling for public assistance in the protection of the heritages.

The optimal compositions of molded granules subjected to thermochemical processing to obtain synthesis gas are determined. The technological design of coal and organic waste joint processing has been developed. The main technological parameters of the processes are indicated and calculations of the main material flows are performed in accordance with the conditions of the processes.

AbstractTwenty-five years since foundational publications on valuing ecosystem services for human well-being1,2, addressing the global biodiversity crisis3 still implies confronting barriers to incorporating nature’s diverse values into decision-making. These barriers include powerful interests supported by current norms and legal rules such as property rights, which determine whose values and which values of nature are acted on. A better understanding of how and why nature is (under)valued is more urgent than ever4. Notwithstanding agreements to incorporate nature’s values into actions, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)5 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals6, predominant environmental and development policies still prioritize a subset of values, particularly those linked to markets, and ignore other ways people relate to and benefit from nature7. Arguably, a ‘values crisis’ underpins the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change8, pandemic emergence9 and socio-environmental injustices10. On the basis of more than 50,000 scientific publications, policy documents and Indigenous and local knowledge sources, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) assessed knowledge on nature’s diverse values and valuation methods to gain insights into their role in policymaking and fuller integration into decisions7,11. Applying this evidence, combinations of values-centred approaches are proposed to improve valuation and address barriers to uptake, ultimately leveraging transformative changes towards more just (that is, fair treatment of people and nature, including inter- and intragenerational equity) and sustainable futures.

Oleksandr Marchenko in OpenAIREThe article aims to study the international experience of smart specialization in regions and develop ways to improve it.The work uses methods of systematization, morphological analysis, graphic and empirical research.The authors investigated the essence, features and possibilities of smart specialization and schematically depicted it. The authors identified five principles of smart specialization, analyzed the foreign experience of smart specialization of regions. Based on the conducted studies of the European policy of unity and regional policy of the EU, they substantiated the expediency of introducing a model of smart specialization of regions to ensure sustainable regional development on an innovative basis and improve the living conditions of households.Based on the studied theoretical and methodological material, the authors developed ways to improve the smart specialization of regions, namely, an algorithm for substantiation of potential areas of smart specialization in the regions and the conceptual approach to the choice of strategic priorities for innovative regional development, taking into account the principles of "smart specialization".Recommendations are proposed for improving the processes of forming innovative regional strategies, taking into account the principles of the concept of "smart specialization", and the necessity of forming a map of unique, innovative competencies of regions and clusters of the country is substantiated.To visually reflect the state of smart specialization of regions, the authors proposed the use of two maps that neutralize each other's shortcomings and help make more balanced management decisions.

Interestingly, greater attention is paid to assessing the development of policies and projects as well as to capacity building. Within this context in May 1999 the Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved a partnership between the GEF Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in order to determine the strategic position for capacity building as new ecological issues appear. Currently projects for Capacity Assessment for Global Environment Management are being implemented in 21 European countries including the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In Kyrgyzstan such projects began when the National Executive Agency of the Ministry of Ecology and Emergencies of the Kyrgyz Republic was appointed. The aim of self-assessment is to identify and analyse national priorities and needs for capacity increase at the individual, institutional and system levels which are necessary for the implementation of three global ecological conventions. Project main goals: (1) Assessment of priority, needs and identification of common problems within the framework of all the conventions; (2) Assessment of national country capacity in the area of implementation of the three conventions, (3) Preparation of the National Strategic Action Plan and (4) Strengthening of dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders.

Rosley Anholon in OpenAIREAbstract The potential for energy efficiency and for the deployment of renewable energy at universities is substantial, and they represent promising ways to meet an institution's energy needs on the one hand, without a large climate burden on the other. However, in order to achieve successful investment and results, it is imperative to understand the level of current commitment to energy actions. Therefore, this paper investigates the level of engagement in energy efficiency measures of a sample of 50 higher education institutions from round the world, and identifies which types of renewable energy are being used to date. Results show that in more than half of the universities only a small portion of energy consumption comes from renewable sources (1%–20%) and solar/photovoltaics is the most used source (70%). Investment in energy efficiency is more common in the sample, with 54% of the universities reporting higher levels of engagement, mainly in buildings (78%) and equipment/machineries (56%). Departing from the assumption that sustainable energy use is a pre-condition for campuses to pursue sustainability, the paper identifies current deficiencies and discusses improvements in this key area, with experiences which may be replicable elsewhere.

Stephanie A. Hirmer in OpenAIRERoad transport accounts for around 12% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As many high-income countries are moving to decarbonise their road vehicle fleets, Kyrgyzstan – with rapid growth in passenger car ownership – is seeing a significant increase in transport-related GHG emissions and air pollution in urban areas. Whilst a transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is a key part of Kyrgyzstan’s Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement, the potential for successful EV deployment in the region is under-researched. To fill this research gap, this paper presents an assessment of the potential for EV deployment in Kyrgyzstan. Firstly, we present an investigation of the policy and institutional landscape relating to transport and the promotion of EVs in Kyrgyzstan. Secondly, based on research of 50,000 car sales and interviews with 23 key stakeholders in the country, we present analysis of the existing Kyrgyz vehicle fleet. Thirdly, using information ascertained from the interviews and desk-based research, we conduct a Total Cost of Ownership assessment of EVs versus internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) in the Kyrgyz context. We find that under the current conditions, EVs can have a lower total cost of ownership against similar ICEVs in Kyrgyzstan. However, it is evident that this is not typically the case: the analysis in this paper suggests that cost-competitiveness between EVs and ICEVs is more likely for larger and higher-powered vehicles, for which the ICEV version has a higher retail price. Finally, combining analysis of these results and analysis of the current conditions in Kyrgyzstan, trajectories for EV adoption in geographically and economically similar nations, and data from expert stakeholder interviews, we propose a set of policy recommendations to accelerate EV uptake in Kyrgyzstan.

Renewable energy technologies play a crucial role in solving global energy and environmental issues, and the pace of the energy transition directly depends on improving their efficiency. Presently, the development and implementation of renewable energy systems are ensured mainly through state funding, the possibilities of which are limited. The potential of attracting private investments depends directly on their impact on companies’ profitability indicators, and the uncertainty regarding the return on investments is one of the main barriers affecting investors’ decision-making. Based on a vector autoregressive model for analysing the stationary time series, the paper explores the impact of long-term investments and research and development costs in renewable energy technologies on the financial performance of ten of the largest companies operating in this field. The study’s results showed that investments and spending on research and development positively affect such companies’ profitability indicators as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, earnings before interest and tax, net income, and return on investment. The obtained results can be used to substantiate the economic effectiveness of investments in developing and improving renewable energy technologies when forming the companies’ financial policies to support them.
