Tangential-firing boilers develop large swirling fireballs by using pulverized coal and air from the corners of the burner zone. During operation, however, the boiler may experience an uneven air supply between corners; this deforms the fireball, raising various issues concerning performance and structural safety. This study investigated the characteristic boiler performance and the role of burner tilting in a 500 MWe boiler with secondary air (SA) in two corners that are up to 1.9 times larger than those in the other corners. Computational fluid dynamics simulations with advanced coal combustion sub-models were employed with the following two sets of cases: (i) six cases of actual operation to validate the modeling and (ii) sixteen cases for the parametric study of SA flow ratio and burner tilt between −15° and +26°. The results showed that the uneven SA supply deteriorated the boiler performance in various aspects and the burner tilt can be used to alleviate its impact. With a larger SA supply from the left wind box, the mass flow, heat absorption, and O2 concentration were larger in the right half of the heat exchanger sections owing to the rotating flow. The corresponding imbalance in the reaction stoichiometry increased the peak temperature entering the tube bundles by up to 60 °C and NO emissions by 6.7% as compared with normal operations. The wall heat absorption was up to 19% larger on the right and front walls. The high burner tilt of +26° helped alleviate the impact of uneven SA supply on the heat distribution and uniformity of the flow pattern and temperature, whereas a +15° burner tilt was the least favorable.

Abstract The effects of the ejector geometry (nozzle diameter and mixing chamber) and the operating conditions (liquid circulating rate, liquid level in column) on the hydraulic characteristics in a rectangular bubble column ( 0.22 × 0.26 × 1.3 m 3 ) with a horizontal flow ejector were determined. The gas phase holdup increases with increasing liquid circulating rate but decreases with increasing liquid level in the column. In the multiphase CFD simulation with the mixture model and the experiments, the gas suction rate increases with increasing liquid circulating rate. However, the gas suction rate decreases with increasing the liquid level in the column and nozzle diameter. The predicted values from the CFD simulation are well accord to the experimental data.

The leaves of three Ligularia species belonging to the family Compositae, Ligularia stenocephala, L. fischeri, and L. fischeri var. spiciformis, were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed on the caffeoylquinic acids by HPLC and subjected to peroxynitrite-scavenging assay. The IC(50) of the MeOH extract of L. stenocephala was 1.62+/-0.03 mug/ml and the major caffeoylquinic acids of L. stenocephala were 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl-muco-quinic acid, and 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid. The compositions of caffeoylquinic acids were different for the three plants. Since percentage of total caffeoylquinic acids of the extract was highest (42.20% of the MeOH extract and 94.52% of the BuOH extract) in L. stenocephala and potent in peroxynitrite-scavenging assay, the extracts of L. stenocephala were chosen to perform in vivo anti-ulcerogenic activity. Treatment of mice with the MeOH- and BuOH extracts decreased the diameter of gastric lesions caused by HCl/ethanol- and indomethacin/bethanechol and decreased the volume of gastric juice, suggesting that caffeoylquinic acids have anti-ulcerogenic activity. These results suggest that the leaves of Ligularia species may help prevent or treat gastric ulcers.

Reese;AbstractImproving the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells is critical to the deployment of this technology. Despite the great emphasis laid on stability-related investigations, publications lack consistency in experimental procedures and parameters reported. It is therefore challenging to reproduce and compare results and thereby develop a deep understanding of degradation mechanisms. Here, we report a consensus between researchers in the field on procedures for testing perovskite solar cell stability, which are based on the International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS) protocols. We propose additional procedures to account for properties specific to PSCs such as ion redistribution under electric fields, reversible degradation and to distinguish ambient-induced degradation from other stress factors. These protocols are not intended as a replacement of the existing qualification standards, but rather they aim to unify the stability assessment and to understand failure modes. Finally, we identify key procedural information which we suggest reporting in publications to improve reproducibility and enable large data set analysis.

With information technology (IT) now showing advanced capabilities, many new services are being introduced to consumers of smartphones through the various available app stores. Moreover, the recent proliferation of such services related to information and communications technology has seen a momentous rise. Despite this trend, the ever-changing landscape of mobile IT services is creating a serious problem for businesses who are already experiencing fierce market conditions. Thus, in order to maintain the sustainability of an enterprise, it is necessary to make an adequate analysis of the success and failure factors of IT services in order to create a sustained competitive advantage. Considering 22 real IT service cases based on two platform models (merchant model and two-sided model) and through surveys submitted to 11 experienced entrepreneurs in IT services, we conducted a t-test analysis in order to first assess the success and failure factors of the IT service cases. Next, we performed a logistic regression analysis in order to find underlying relationships of our hypothesized model. The results showed that the participants identified 141 success and 101 failure factors in total with the t-tests, confirming that the distinction between success and failure of each IT service assessed was significant. Next, the results from the logistic regression showed which relationships were the best on the basis of the given platform model. Overall, this study was able to identify the main factors that have an influence on the success and failure of IT services based on two identified platform models. In doing so, this paper can help to inform future IT service entrepreneurs and researchers involved in developing new apps based on IT services by providing a guide to what factors need to be considered before going to market.

AbstractThe development of advanced anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries that can provide high specific capacity and stable cycle performance is of paramount importance. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing molecular‐level homogeneous carbon integration to porous SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2@C NPs) tailored to enhance their electrochemical activities for lithium‐ion battery anode. By varying the ratio of the precursors for sol–gel reaction of (phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)), the carbon content and porosity within SiO2@C NPs is precisely controlled. With a 4:6 PTMS and TEOS ratio, the SiO2@C NPs exhibit a highly mesoporous structure with thin carbon and the partially reduced SiOx phases, which balances ion and charge transfer for electrochemical activation of SiO2@C NPs resulting remarkable capacity and cycle performance. This study offers a novel strategy for preparing affordable high capacity SiO2‐based advanced anode materials with enhanced electrochemical performances.image

A study of the production of prompt J/ψ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at s=8TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/ψ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/ψ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/ψ mesons having energy above 15 GeV and rapidity |y|<1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity |ηjet|<1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/ψ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/ψ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/ψ mesons are predicted to be unpolarized. This technique demonstrates a new way to test predictions for prompt J/ψ production using nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. Physics Letters B, 804 ISSN:0370-2693 ISSN:0031-9163 ISSN:1873-2445

Bioavailable organic-rich food waste (FW) is a promising feedstock for renewable hydrogen production. However, its highly suspended and complex nature presents substantial challenges for producing high-purity hydrogen in dual-chamber microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). This study examined the effects of pretreating FW through pre-fermentation and/or filtration on its microbial electrolysis. Both methods enhanced the exoelectrogenic utilization of FW, with pre-fermentation being especially effective by conditioning substrate composition, while filtration alone was less advantageous due to associated energy loss. The MECs fed with pre-fermented FW exhibited significantly higher performances, achieving the highest hydrogen yield of 1,029 mL/g chemical oxygen demand fed (39.1 % increase over raw FW) when pre-fermentation was followed by filtration. Bioanodes across all MECs were dominated by exoelectrogenic bacteria, mainly Geobacter and Desulfovibrio, with significantly greater abundance observed with pre-fermentation. These findings highlight the value of pretreatment, particularly pre-fermentation, and warrant further optimization research to maximize FW conversion into hydrogen.

The position rendering a large overlap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) enhances the quantum efficiency of the TADF emitter. Regarding the orbital overlap, donor attachments at 2‐ and 6‐positions of the benzonitrile were more beneficial than 3‐ and 5‐substitutions. Moreover, an additional attachment of a weak donor at the 4‐position further increased the quantum efficiency without decreasing the emission energy. Therefore, the molecular design strategy of substituting strong donors at the positions allowing a large molecular orbital overlap and an extra weak donor is a good approach to achieve both high quantum efficiency and a slightly increased emission energy.
