Francesco Guarino in OpenAIRELife cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) is one of the most relevant tools delving in sustainability science, based currently on the triple bottom line idea that is defined as the contemporary implementation of the three tools of life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC) and social life cycle assessment (S-LCA). The methodology is currently being applied to a wide set of products and systems. However, as per in the large interest towards energy-related products, the sustainability assessment of energy systems—in particular those where fluid streams are used—could be more effective if some further stages could be included in the analysis, i.e. a process level analysis with regard to energy quality and exergy, and a more thorough energy analysis of the fluid flows available to achieve an optimal design of the system. This paper proposes an extended framework for LCSA introducing two additional stages to the methodology: Constructal law (CL) inspired analysis of the energy design of the system and exergy analysis (EA) of the system and its life cycle. A fully developed case study (a biomass boiler) is proposed, described the extended life cycle energy and sustainability assessment (LCESA: LCA, LCC, S-LCA, CL, EA), highlighting both the quantitative results related to each section together with the strengths and limits of the methodology, while stressing the potential applications as, e.g., decision support tool and support to the design of energy system. The results highlight different and optimized designs for the boiler through a constructal law–based analysis and several hot-spots throughout different stages of the life cycle, ranging from the production stage of steel for most environmental indicators in LCA to the cooking stage for the exergy analysis. Relevant positive impacts are traced also in the S-LCA point of view during both the use and production step. The methodology could represent a potential advancement towards the LCSA application to energy technologies as it highlights some limits and proposes specific advancements.

Marco Möller in OpenAIREThe high Arctic archipelagos around the globe are among the most strongly glacierized landscapes on Earth apart from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Over the past decades, the mass losses from land ice in the high Arctic regions have contributed substantially to global sea level rise. Among these regions, the archipelago of Svalbard showed the smallest mass losses. However, this could change in the coming decades, as Svalbard is expected to be exposed to strong climate warming over the 21st century. Here we present extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the future ice-mass evolution of 29 individual land-terminating glaciers on the Svalbard archipelago under an RCP 8.5 climate forcing. An extrapolation of the 29 sample glaciers to all land-terminating glaciers of the archipelago suggests an almost complete deglaciation of the region by 2100. Under RCP 8.5, 98% of the land-terminating glaciers will have declined to less than one tenth of their initial size, resulting in a loss of 7392 ± 2481 km ^2 of ice coverage.

Bardow, André in OpenAIRETwo-stage synthesis problems simultaneously consider here-and-now decisions (e.g., optimal investment) and wait-and-see decisions (e.g., optimal operation). The optimal synthesis of energy systems reveals such a two-stage character. The synthesis of energy systems involves multiple large time series such as energy demands and energy prices. Since problem size increases with the size of the time series, synthesis of energy systems leads to complex optimization problems. To reduce the problem size without loosing solution quality, we propose a method for time-series aggregation to identify typical periods. Typical periods retain the chronology of time steps, which enables modeling of energy systems, e.g., with storage units or start-up cost. The aim of the proposed method is to obtain few typical periods with few time steps per period, while accurately representing the objective function of the full time series, e.g., cost. Thus, we determine the error of time-series aggregation as the cost difference between operating the optimal design for the aggregated time series and for the full time series. Thereby, we rigorously bound the maximum performance loss of the optimal energy system design. In an initial step, the proposed method identifies the best length of typical periods by autocorrelation analysis. Subsequently, an adaptive procedure determines aggregated typical periods employing the clustering algorithm k-medoids, which groups similar periods into clusters and selects one representative period per cluster. Moreover, the number of time steps per period is aggregated by a novel clustering algorithm maintaining chronology of the time steps in the periods. The method is iteratively repeated until the error falls below a threshold value. A case study based on a real-world synthesis problem of an energy system shows that time-series aggregation from 8,760 time steps to 2 typical periods with each 2 time steps results in an error smaller than the optimality gap of the synthesis problem (2%). This corresponds to a reduction of the number time steps and thus a reduction of the size of the synthesis problem by a factor of 1,000 with excellent accuracy in cost estimation. Xu, Xiaofeng in OpenAIRETo achieve carbon neutrality and improve emission reduction efficiency, capturing carbon dioxide from the air on a large scale and promoting the application and innovation of carbon capture technology (CCUS) are the most important goals. This study undertakes an annual and comprehensive evaluation of the policy and the technological innovation efficiency (TIE) of 10 listed companies in China using the DEA model and the Malmquist index analysis method. The number of relevant laws and policies is significant, but they are not well coordinated. The static evaluation results indicate that the complete factor production rate is low, generally lower than 0.9, and the technical innovation efficiency is weak, mainly because of technological backwardness. The dynamic evaluation results indicate that the changes in total factor productivity (TFP) each year are primarily affected by changes in technological progress. This suggests that most domestic enterprises are still exploring technological innovation (TI) and operational business models. Finally, this study proposes measures to improve the TIE of carbon capture technology enterprises in China, including giving full play to the role of the government, expanding effective investment, and improving innovational ability.

Jérôme Frisch in OpenAIREAbstract In this paper, simulations of 500 open-source CityGML building models for heating demand calculation are presented. Using an archetype-based approach and statistical enrichment, Modelica simulations are carried out using the TEASER tool and Dymola. The authors compare the simulation results against measurement data and investigate the impact of years of construction, building usages and refurbishment states in the context of urban building energy simulations. The individual buildings are assigned with information over the construction years and building functions using the measurement data. The years of construction and building usages are primarily obtained in the context of two other research projects and are used for the archetype assignments of the individual building models. Hence, these are well-informed assumptions by the authors, resp. the industry partner experts. This paper includes an in-depth investigation of individual building archetypes with respect to the years of construction. Firstly, the buildings are simulated using externally acquired construction years and pre-assigned CityGML building functions. The simulation results are compared against the measured primary heating demands. Due to high discrepancies between simulations and measured data, the authors secondly, simulate the building models with different refurbishment states. In this paper, the authors conclude that open datasets are indeed important, however, for energy performance simulations, attributes such as construction years, building usages and refurbishment states are necessary and should be included in the open datasets to present an added value.

Sauer, Dirk Uwe in OpenAIREThe electrification of public transport bus networks can be carried out utilizing different technological solutions, like trolley, battery or fuel cell buses. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how and to what extent existing bus networks can be electrified with fast charging battery buses. The so called opportunity chargers use mainly the regular dwell time at the stops to charge their batteries. This results in a strong linkage between the vehicle scheduling and the infrastructure planning. The analysis is based on real-world data of the bus network in Muenster, a mid-sized city in Germany. The outcomes underline the necessity to focus on entire vehicle schedules instead on individual trips. The tradeoff between required battery capacity and charging power is explained in detail. Furthermore, the impact on the electricity grid is discussed based on the load profiles of a selected charging station and a combined load profile of the entire network.

A promising coal utilisation proess is the integrated gasification combined cycle process. The direct use of the raw gas requires gas clean-up to prevent downstream parts of the gasifier from several problems. An increased efficiency and a decreased amount of harmful species can be achieved through hot fuel gas cleaning. This clean-up technique requires a comprehensive knowledge of the release characteristics of inorganic coal constituents. The aim of this thesis was to provide enhanced knowledge of the effect of key process parameters and of the chemical constitution of coal on the release of Na, K, S, and Cl species from high-temperature coal gasification. The experimental setup consisted of atmospheric flow tube furnaces and a pressurised furnace. In-situ analysis of the product gas was carried out using molecular beam mass spectrometry. A broad spectrum of different coals with assumed qualitative and quantitative differences in the release characteristics was investigated. Additionally, experiments with model substances were performed. The results of the experimental investigation were compared with thermodynamic calculations. Finally, recommendations, for the operation of a high-temperature gasifier are formulated. Die Entwicklung hocheffizienter Techniken zur energetischen Nutzung von Kohle gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung, u.a. aufgrund der Diskussion um den Beitrag der anthropogenen CO2-Emission zum Klimawandel. Ein aussichtsreicher Prozess ist die integrierte Vergasung von Kohle und die Nutzung des Produktgases in einem GuD-Kraftwerk. Um nachfolgende Anlagenteile vor Schäden zu schützen, muss das Produktgas gereinigt werden. Der Einsatz einer Hochtemperaturreinigungsstufe kann sowohl die Effizienz des Gesamtprozesses erhöhen als auch die Menge an schädlichen Verbindungen im Gas reduzieren. Notwendige Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung der Hochtemperaturgasreinigung ist ein umfassendes Verständnis des Freisetzungsverhaltens anorganischer Kohlenbestandteile. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es eine Wissensbasis bezüglich des Einflusses verschiedener Prozessparameter und der Zusammensetzung der Kohle auf das Freisetzungsverhalten von Na-, K-, Cl- und S-haltigen Verbindungen zu schaffen. Bei den Freisetzungsversuchen wurden Kohlen verschiedenen Ranges in einem atmosphärischen Rohrofen bzw. in einem Druckofen umgesetzt. Das Produktgas wurde mittels Molekularstrahl-Massenspektrometer analysiert. Zusätzlich wurden Versuche mit Modellsubstanzen und thermodynamische Rechnungen durchgeführt. Abschließend wurden Empfehlungen für den Betrieb eines Hochtemperaturvergasers formuliert.

Johannes Fryjan in OpenAIREDevelopment challenges in the automotive industry are constantly increasing due to the high number of vehicle variants, the growing complexity of powertrains, and future legal requirements. In order to reduce development times while maintaining a high level of product quality and financial feasibility, the application of new model-based methods for virtual powertrain calibration is a particularly suitable approach. In this context, TME and FEV combine advanced thermal management models with electronic control unit (ECU) models for model-in-the-loop applications. This paper presents a development process for ECU and on-board diagnostics (OBD) functions of thermal management systems in hybrid electric vehicles. Thanks to the highly accurate 1D/3D-models, optimal control strategies for electrically actuated components can be developed in early development phases. Virtual sensors for local temperatures are developed for the ECU software to enable a cost-effective use of dedicated control functions. Furthermore, an application for OBD cooling system leakage detection is shown. Finally, the transferability of the methodology to a battery cooling system is demonstrated.

The importance of automotive turbocharger performance is continuously increasing. However, further gains in efficiency are becoming progressively difficult to achieve. The bearing friction losses impact the overall efficiency of the turbocharger and accordingly the understanding of bearing systems and their characteristics is essential for future improvements. In this work, a detailed analysis on the mechanical losses occurring in the bearing system of automotive turbochargers is presented. Friction losses have been measured experimentally on a special test bench up to rotational speeds of nTC = 130,000 1/min. Special interest was given to the thrust bearing characteristics and its contribution to the total friction losses. For this, the experiments were split into three parts: first, friction power was determined as a function of turbocharger speed at zero externally applied thrust load. Second, external thrust load up to 40 N was applied onto the turbocharger bearing at fixed rotational speeds of nTC = 40,000, 80,000, and 120,000 1/min. Increasing thrust load was observed to result in increasing friction losses amounting to a maximum of 32%. At last, a specially prepared turbocharger center section with deactivated thrust bearing was investigated. A comparison of these results with the measurement of the conventional bearing system under thrust-free conditions allowed separating journal and thrust bearing losses. The contribution of the thrust bearing to the overall bearing losses appeared to be as high as 38%. Furthermore, a modeling approach for estimating the friction power of both fully floating journal bearing as well as thrust bearing is illustrated. This theoretical model is shown to predict friction losses reasonably well compared to the experimental results.
