Severe Accidents (SAs) dominate the risk associated to the commercial production of nuclear energy. Despite the major achievements made in their research, still existing gaps, upcoming new technologies as Accident Tolerant Fuels (ATFs) and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), more stringent safety requirements, optimization of SA management, and other factors, point the need for an efficient use of research resources in the years to come.Three major elements should integrate any SA roadmap to be proposed: preservation of knowledge and knowhow; identification of key issues which research would result in the best accident management (AM) feasible; and, no less important, strengthening the workforce who will be responsible for such research. The SEAKNOT project (SEvere Accident research and KNOwledge managemenT for LWRs) was born to address this need in all and every aspect. The present article outlines the major pillars of SEAKNOT and synthesizes the progress made since its onset at the end of 2022. The methodologies adopted to develop a SA PIRT (Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table) and to build a Validation Database Directory (VADD) are described along with the ongoing phenomena listing and ranking. Besides, the first steps towards an experimental infrastructure capable of dealing with present and future needs (SAINET) are included. No less relevant the actions already made and the novelties coming on the side of knowledge and know-how transfer are also discussed.

It concerns both the fuel and the metallic (i.e., cladding and structural material) components of the spent fuel assemblies, where different calculation approaches and methods should be deployed for their characterization. This study concentrates on fuel traces and other impurities within the cladding. During the operating cycles, the Zircaloy cladding is exposed to a considerable amount of irradiation. The impact of the exposure should be checked to assure the integrity of the cladding and thus the safety of the stored spent fuel. Within the work package “Spent Nuclear Fuel Characterization and Evolution until Disposal” (SFC) of the EURAD project, dedicated samples were produced, irradiated and the radionuclide inventory of the cladding was analysed and compared. In parallel a blind test was performed, in which different partners used different codes to simulate the irradiation quantity. The blind test showed good agreement between most of the codes, in particular in view of the small amount of the evolved fuel traces. Furthermore, the presence of actinides, caused by precipitation of uranium on the inner surface of the cladding during manufacturing, was found to be negligible in comparison to precipitation of traces of fuel pellets on the cladding during operation. The good agreement between the simulating codes enables to depict further the initial amount of alloying elements of the cladding material itself in a better manner. In particular specific isotopes of cobalt, nickel and iron, which are directly connected to the unique properties of each cladding material can be better identified based on the accurate measuring techniques used in this study.

The recently completed Horizon-2020 project “Management and Uncertainties of Severe Accidents (MUSA)” has reviewed uncertainty sources and Uncertainty Quantification methodology for assessing Severe Accidents (SA), and has made a substantial effort at stimulating uncertainty applications in predicting the radiological Source Term of reactor and Spent Fuel Pool accident scenarios. The key motivation of the project has been to bring the advantages of the Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty approach to the field of Severe Accident modelling. With respect to deterministic analyses, expected gains are avoiding adopting conservative assumptions, identifying uncertainty bands of estimates, and gaining insights into dominating uncertain parameters. Also, the benefits for understanding and improving Accident Management were to be explored. The reactor applications brought together a large group of participants that set out to apply uncertainty analysis (UA) within their field of SA modelling expertise – in particular reactor types, but also SA code used (ASTEC, MELCOR, MAAP, RELAP/SCDAPSIM), uncertainty quantification tools used (DAKOTA, SUSA, URANIE, self-developed tools based on Python code), detailed accident scenarios, and in some cases SAM actions. The setting up of the analyses, challenges faced during that phase, and solutions explored, are described in Brumm et al. ANE 191 (2023). This paper synthesizes the reactor-application work at the end of the project. Analyses of 23 partners are presented in different categories, depending on whether their main goal is/are (i) uncertainty bands of simulation results; (ii) the understanding of dominating uncertainties in specific sub-models of the SA code; (iii) improving the understanding of specific accident scenarios, with or without the application of SAM actions; or, (iv) a demonstration of the tools used and developed, and of the capability to carry out an uncertainty analysis in the presence of the challenges faced. A cross-section of the partners’ results is presented and briefly discussed, to provide an overview of the work done, and to encourage accessing and studying the project deliverables that are open to the public. Furthermore, the partners’ experiences made during the project have been evaluated and are presented as good practice recommendations. The paper ends with conclusions on the level of readiness of UA in SA modelling, on the determination of governing uncertainties, and on the analysis of SAM actions.

In this paper two control rod ejection accident scenarios will be presented in a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) geometry: a transient starting from Hot Zero Power (HZP), and one starting from Hot Full Power (HFP) conditions, both of them using Beginning of Cycle (BOC) material composition. Both the time dependent core-wise data and the node-wise data at certain times calculated by the GUARDYAN-SCF coupled code system exhibit the tendencies expected during such transients, with the thermal hydraulic properties mostly inside their safe limits. Relative variances estimated from 8 independent realisations suggest the results are credible. To further support our findings the HZP results are presented alongside data from PARCS-SCF and Serpent2-SCF calculations provided by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), while for the HFP case we were able to compare some of the quantities to PARCS-SCF results.

The PARCS v3.2 nodal-diffusion core simulator was used as a full-core reactor physics solver to emulate the operation of a reactor and to generate training, and validation data for the ANN. The ANN was implemented with dedicated Python 3.8 code with Google's TensorFlow 2.0 library. The effort was based to a large extent on the process of appropriate automatic transformation of data generated by PARCS simulator, which was later used in the process of the ANN development. Various methods that allow obtaining better accuracy of the ANN predicted results were studied, such as trying different ANN architectures to find the optimal number of neurons in the hidden layers of the network. Results were later compared with the architectures proposed in the literature. For the selected best architecture predictions were made for different core parameters and their dependence on core loading patterns. In this study, a special focus was put on the prediction of the fuel cycle length for a given core loading pattern, as it can be considered one of the targets for plant economic operation. For instance, the length of a single fuel cycle depending on the initial core loading pattern was predicted with very good accuracy (>99%). This work contributes to the exploration of the usefulness of neural networks in solving nuclear reactor design problems. Thanks to the application of ANN, designers can avoid using an excessive amount of core simulator runs and more rapidly explore the space of possible solutions before performing more detailed design considerations.
