Abstract This paper aims to present a feasibility study of the innovative plant for methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide-sequestered by fossil fuel power plant and hydrogen, which is produced by water electrolyzer employing the over-production on the electrical grid. The thermo-economic analysis is performed in the framework of the MefCO2 H2020 EU project and it is referred to the German economic scenario, properly taking into account the real market costs and cost functions for different components of the plant. Three different plant capacities for methanol production (4000 10,000 and 50,000 ton/year) have been investigated, assuming an average cost for electrical energy to feed electrolysers and analyzing the influence of the most significant parameters (oxygen selling option, methanol selling price and electrolysers’ capital cost) on the profitability of the plant. The analysis has been performed in W-ECoMP, software for the thermo-economic analysis and plant optimization developed by the University of Genoa.

This paper estimates the merit-order-effect induced by variable renewable energy in the German-Austrian electricity sector with a multivariate regression model. The research focus lies on the impact of the estimated effects on the marketability of variable renewable electricity generation. The results show a systematic decline of the average market revenues for wind and photovoltaic plants in the period from January 2011 to December 2013. Current market data shows a continuation of this trend into 2016. According to the German long term goals for the use of renewables, wind and solar power will play a crucial role in the future electricity generation mix. If investments in these technologies will be profitable without any regulatory remuneration mechanisms in addition to the market revenues, depends on the further cost degression and the development of the merit-order-effect.

Konrad Gryszpanowicz in OpenAIREFor economic reasons, expansions of transmission networks are based on a compromise between capital cost and security of power system operation. At the same time, the power system must withstand typical highly likely contingencies. Various emergency state control systems, also called special protections, prevent emergencies following less likely contingencies. This paper describes overloads emergency state control (OLEC) used for the alleviation of overload in transmission networks near a power plant. Such control uses the functions of automated power reduction of generating units and has been implemented for a large steam power plant. The OLEC presented here uses different methods of generation curtailment for steam generation units. A case study illustrates the efficiency of the proposed control method.

Pakseresht, Ashkan in OpenAIREAbstract Social acceptance of innovative technologies is a key element of an effective transition towards more sustainable energy economies. However, innovative technologies like genetic modification also tend to spark controversy and backlash. So far, efforts to inform the public about any risks and benefits of novel technologies not only have struggled to foster acceptance but also neglect the interdependent foundations of consumer decision-making. Through a controlled experiment with German consumers (N = 322), we examine whether consumer support and rejection of genetic modification in bioenergy crops is influenced by the statements and actions of actors throughout the supply chain. In specific, we show that the decision of energy companies to sell and support GM bioenergy positively impacts consumer decisions to support. To ensure that decision outcomes were specifically impacted by the expressions of corporate actors, we controlled for the content and valence of information by random assignment to one of three treatments in which participants received positive, negative, or balanced (risks and benefits) information. We find that negative messaging diminished support and increased rejection relative to the other treatments. Lastly, the statements and actions of corporate actors also exerted an indirect influence on consumer decisions through their interactions with social trust and labels, e.g. greater support by farmers had a positive influence only for those who are more generally trustworthy. Given these results, we anticipate more attention to the importance of actors such as farmers and energy companies for the social acceptance of novel technologies in the energy sphere.

Agata Łamacz in OpenAIREAbstract Coal gasification is accompanied with formation of tars that cause equipment problems and have to be removed from the raw gas. Our previous studies proved that nickel supported ceria-zirconia catalyst (Ni/CZ) reveals high activity towards decomposition of toluene and 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) via steam reforming reaction (SR). However, the components of the raw gas from coal gasification (i.e. H2, CO, CO2 and CH4) may influence the performance of Ni/CZ catalyst. The influence of particular components of the raw gas on catalyst performance during SR of model tar compounds have been studied and discussed in this paper. It has been found that H2 and CO addition to the steam reforming feed drastically decreases the activity of Ni/CZ catalyst, whereas CO2 presence enhances conversion of toluene and 1-MN mixture owing to the occurrence of dry reforming reaction (DR). It has also been observed that methane, which is present in the raw gas from coal gasification consumes partly both the H2O and CO2, causing some decrease in conversion of model tar compounds. The influence of contact time (tc) on hydrocarbons conversion and the participation of (DR) have been examined. Agata Łamacz in OpenAIREAbstract Coal gasification is accompanied with formation of tars that cause equipment problems and have to be removed from the raw gas. Our previous studies proved that nickel supported ceria-zirconia catalyst (Ni/CZ) reveals high activity towards decomposition of toluene and 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) via steam reforming reaction (SR). However, the components of the raw gas from coal gasification (i.e. H2, CO, CO2 and CH4) may influence the performance of Ni/CZ catalyst. The influence of particular components of the raw gas on catalyst performance during SR of model tar compounds have been studied and discussed in this paper. It has been found that H2 and CO addition to the steam reforming feed drastically decreases the activity of Ni/CZ catalyst, whereas CO2 presence enhances conversion of toluene and 1-MN mixture owing to the occurrence of dry reforming reaction (DR). It has also been observed that methane, which is present in the raw gas from coal gasification consumes partly both the H2O and CO2, causing some decrease in conversion of model tar compounds. The influence of contact time (tc) on hydrocarbons conversion and the participation of (DR) have been examined. As was observed, lower contact times lead to decrease in hydrocarbons conversion in SR, making the same participation of DR more pronounced than for higher tc values. This work proves that Ni/CZ catalyst can be used for removal of tarry compounds via the catalytic hot gas cleaning of the raw gas form coal gasification.

Torrefaction is a pre-treatment that may enhance the biomass quality as a fuel, and consists in exposing the biomass to an inert atmosphere at a temperature between 200 °C and 300 °C. This study evaluates the combustion characteristics of raw and torrefied grape pomace in a thermogravimetric analyzer and in a drop tube furnace. Initially, the raw grape pomace was torrefied in an argon inert atmosphere at 260 °C. Subsequently, the combustion of the raw and torrefied grape pomace was examined in the thermogravimetric analyzer through non-isothermal runs at a heating rate of 10 °C/min from room temperature to 800 °C. Finally, the combustion of both biomass residues was evaluated in the drop tube furnace at 1100 °C. The data reported includes gas temperature, major gas species concentration and particle burnout measured along the axis of the drop tube furnace. The main conclusions of this study are (i) for the devolatilization stage, the thermogravimetric data yielded apparent activation energy values of 84.9 and 85.2 kJ mol−1, and for the char oxidation stage of 137.5 and 109.2 kJ mol−1 for the raw and torrefied grape pomace, respectively; (ii) the NOx concentrations along the drop tube furnace were always higher for the combustion of the torrefied grape pomace than for the combustion of the raw grape pomace because the former residue has a higher nitrogen content; and (iii) the burnout values along the drop tube furnace were always lower for the combustion of the torrefied grape pomace than for the combustion of the raw grape pomace because the former residue has a lower volatile content and a higher fixed carbon content.

To plan the production and distribution system of combined heat and power (CHP) systems for residential heating, suitable methods for decision support are needed. For a comprehensive feasibility analysis, the integration of the location and capacity planning of the power plants, the choice of customers, and the network planning of the heating network into one optimization model are necessary. Thus, we develop an optimization model for electricity generation and heat supply. This mixed integer linear program (MILP) is based on graph theory for network flow problems. We apply the network location model for the optimization of district heating systems in the City of Osorno in Chile, which exhibits the “checkerboard layout” typically found in many South American cities. The network location model can support the strategic planning of investments in renewable energy projects because it permits the analysis of changing energy prices, calculation of break-even prices for heat and electricity, and estimation of greenhouse gas emission savings.

Amorphous and microcrystalline silicon single junction solar cells were dynamically fabricated with initial efficiencies of 8.3% and 6.3%, respectively. The dynamic deposition rate of these solar cells is 6.75 nm m/min in case of a-Si:H and 3.3 nm m/min for μc-Si:H. In this work it will be shown that an enhancement of the deposition rate up to 15.6 nm m/min during the i-layer deposition of a-Si:H solar cells has only a weak negative influence on the initial efficiencies of the cells. Further on, the effect of substrate velocity on solar cell characteristics of a-Si:H solar cells is investigated. Finally, a productivity estimation of the line source concept is presented.

André Stapf in OpenAIREAbstract Solutions containing hydrofluoric acid (HF), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were investigated as novel acidic, NOx-free etching mixtures for texturing of monocrystalline silicon wafers. High etch rates of up to 13.3 nm s−1 were observed at room temperature, which are comparable to the etch rates of KOH-IPA solutions. The silicon surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), indicating pyramidal textures for diamond wire and SiC-slurry sawn as well as saw-damage etched (polished) wafers. Non-stirred baths generate random pyramidal structures while constantly stirred solutions generate novel random inverted pyramidal surface structures. The light trapping efficiency of wafers etched by the HF-HCl-H2O2 solutions was compared by UV/vis-reflectivity measurements to KOH/i-propanol specimens indicating lower reflectivities for the HF-HCl-H2O2-treated samples. Using the ‘wafer ray tracer’ (pvlighthouse.com) the light absorption properties of monomodal and random inverted pyramid structures were simulated and compared to well-known random and monomodal textures for PERC solar cells, clearly indicating the best performance for random inverted pyramids. Besides, simulation of a PERC solar cell on a roof top at our university was performed, indicating improved performance, especially for random inverted pyramid textures.

André Stapf in OpenAIREAbstract Solutions containing hydrofluoric acid (HF), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were investigated as novel acidic, NOx-free etching mixtures for texturing of monocrystalline silicon wafers. High etch rates of up to 13.3 nm s−1 were observed at room temperature, which are comparable to the etch rates of KOH-IPA solutions. The silicon surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), indicating pyramidal textures for diamond wire and SiC-slurry sawn as well as saw-damage etched (polished) wafers. Non-stirred baths generate random pyramidal structures while constantly stirred solutions generate novel random inverted pyramidal surface structures. The light trapping efficiency of wafers etched by the HF-HCl-H2O2 solutions was compared by UV/vis-reflectivity measurements to KOH/i-propanol specimens indicating lower reflectivities for the HF-HCl-H2O2-treated samples. Using the ‘wafer ray tracer’ (pvlighthouse.com) the light absorption properties of monomodal and random inverted pyramid structures were simulated and compared to well-known random and monomodal textures for PERC solar cells, clearly indicating the best performance for random inverted pyramids. Besides, simulation of a PERC solar cell on a roof top at our university was performed, indicating improved performance, especially for random inverted pyramid textures.

Martin Baumann in OpenAIREVirtually developing of automotive power systems is currently experiencing increasing significance due to elevated vehicular electrification and automation of driving functions. The analysis of system-inherent disturbances requires accurate simulation models for both short-term transients or long-term driving cycles. The electrical behavior of electromechanical actuators such as brake or steering highly depends on the mechanical environmental interaction being dependent many variables. This contribution presents a methodology to extract abstracted models of machine driven actuators on the basis of an electric steering. The dynamics of a complex electromechanical model are investigated using pulse response analysis for differentiated operation points. The obtained model reduction is implemented in a frequency-dependent equivalent circuit.
