The work led to the selection of butane among five tested growth substrates, and to the development and characterization from the site's indigenous biomass of a suspended-cell consortium capable to degrade TCE (first order constant: 96 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 30 °C and 4.3 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 15 °C) with a 90 % mineralization of the organic chlorine. The consortium immobilization had strong effects on the butane and TCE degradation rates. The microbial community structure was slightly changed by a temperature shift from 30 to 15 °C, but remarkably affected by biomass adhesion. Given the higher TCE normalized degradation rate (0.59 day(-1) at 15 °C) and attached biomass concentration (0.13 gprotein Lbioreactor(-1) at 15 °C) attained, the porous ceramic carrier Biomax was selected as the best option for the packed bed reactor process. The low TeCA degradation rate exhibited by the developed consortium suggested the inclusion of a chemical pre-treatment based on the TeCA to TCE conversion via β-elimination, a very fast reaction at alkaline pH. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first attempt to develop a procedure for the development of a packed bed reactor process for the aerobic cometabolism of chlorinated solvents.

SummaryWater accounting is an unresolved issue in metabolism studies. Through epistemological analysis, we show that the problem resides in the conceptualization of social metabolism. Social metabolism has its origins in the analysis of societal energetics, which has led to an exclusive focus on society and a representation based on linear throughputs at a single scale. Whereas fossil energy resources constitute a mere stock flow for society, water constitutes a set of both funds and flows essential for the maintenance of the internal organization and stability of society and ecosystems. This means that societies and ecosystems need water for different reasons. Consequently, the analysis of water requires the simultaneous adoption of multiple narratives and scales. The development of hydrology toward a socio‐eco‐hydrology (SE‐hydrology) deals with this multidimensionality, but lacks a conceptualization of the coupled human‐water system useful to integrate the assessment of water processes at different rates and scales. We propose a conceptual framework, based on the multiscale integrated analysis of societal and ecosystem metabolism approach, that combines the perspectives of SE‐hydrology and social metabolism. This framework describes society and the embedding ecosystem as two distinct levels of the same hierarchical system (i.e., the socioecological system), expressing two distinct, but tightly interconnected, metabolic patterns (societal and ecosystem) at different spatiotemporal scales. Using food grain production in Punjab as an example, we show that this framework can accommodate the multiple interpretations of social metabolism found in different scientific fields.

The objective of the work reported here was to determine whether the ratio of COD/Nox has an impact on poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) metabolism in activated sludge. Furthermore, it was tested if the ratio influenced the percentage use of organic compounds present in wastewater, for endogenous respiration, oxidation, accumulation and denitrification. Gas flow rate in SBR reactor was controlled by thermal mass flow controller (TMFC). Constant amount of air entering sequencing batch reactor was automatically adjusted to stable set-point 2mg O2 L(-1). It means that DO concentration in the reactor could change with oxygen uptake. During the filling period and part of the reaction time DO was nearly zero. Feast period of the external substrate availability and famine period of little amount or no external carbon availability were determined. At 23 h of the reaction time, and COD/Nox ratio 8, denitrification took place only during feast period. What was interesting, poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate degradation was observed in the feast period as well. However, at 11h of the reaction time and COD/Nox ratio 37, denitrification occurred in feast and famine period. In the feast period PHB was accumulated and in the famine period was used as the endogenous carbon source. COD consumption to reduce 1mg N-nitrate was ranging from 1.15 to 6.26 depending on carbon source and increased when exogenous and endogenous carbon were used by activated sludge. The increase in PHB content from 0.25 to 0.43 Cmol/Cmol resulted in a double increase in the amount of nitrogen removed due to denitrification was observed.

Development of sustainable energy is a pivotal step towards solutions for today's global challenges, including mitigating the progression of climate change and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Biofuels derived from agricultural crops have already been commercialized. However the impacts on environmental sustainability and food supply have raised ethical questions about the current practices. Cyanobacteria have attracted interest as an alternative means for sustainable energy productions. Being aquatic photoautotrophs they can be cultivated in non-arable lands and do not compete for land for food production. Their rich genetic resources offer means to engineer metabolic pathways for synthesis of valuable bio-based products. Currently the major obstacle in industrial-scale exploitation of cyanobacteria as the economically sustainable production hosts is low yields. Much effort has been made to improve the carbon fixation and manipulating the carbon allocation in cyanobacteria and their evolutionary photosynthetic relatives, algae and plants. This review aims at providing an overview of the recent progress in the bioengineering of carbon fixation and allocation in cyanobacteria; wherever relevant, the progress made in plants and algae is also discussed as an inspiration for future application in cyanobacteria.

Much effort has been made to improve the carbon fixation and manipulating the carbon allocation in cyanobacteria and their evolutionary photosynthetic relatives, algae and plants. This review aims at providing an overview of the recent progress in the bioengineering of carbon fixation and allocation in cyanobacteria; wherever relevant, the progress made in plants and algae is also discussed as an inspiration for future application in cyanobacteria.

An experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions to investigate the effect of increasing concentrations of fenitrothion (2, 10 and 200 mg a.i./kg soil), diuron (1.5, 7.5 and 150 mg a.i./kg soil) and thiram (3.5, 17.5 and 350 mg a.i./kg soil) on soil respiration, bacterial counts and changes in culturable fraction of soil bacteria. To ascertain these changes, the community structure, bacterial biodiversity and process of colony formation, based on the r/K strategy concept, EP- and CD-indices and the FOR model, respectively, were determined. The results showed that the measured parameters were generally unaffected by the lowest dosages of pesticides, corresponding to the recommended field rates. The highest dosages of fenitrothion and thiram suppressed the peak SIR by 15-70% and 20-80%, respectively, while diuron increased respiration rate by 17-25% during the 28-day experiment. Also, the total numbers of bacteria increased in pesticide-treated soils. However, the reverse effect on day 1 and, in addition, in case of the highest dosages of insecticide on days 14 and 28, was observed. Analysis of the community structure revealed that in all soil treatments bacterial communities were generally dominated by K-strategists. Moreover, differences in the distribution of individual bacteria classes and the gradual domination of bacteria populations belonging to r-strategists during the experiment, as compared to control, was observed. However, on day 1, at the highest pesticide dosages, fast growing bacteria constituted only 1-10% of the total colonies number during 48 h of plate incubation, whereas in remaining samples they reached from 20 to 40% of total cfu. This effect, in case of fenitrothion, lasted till the end of the experiment. At the highest dosages of fenitrothion, diuron and at all dosages of thiram the decrease of biodiversity, as indicated by EP- and CD-indices on day 1, was found. At the next sampling time, no significant retarding or stimulating effect was detected. However, in case of CD values the higher differences were observed. The significant impact of pesticides on the physiological state of soil bacteria was not found. They were generally in dormant state (lambda < 0.5), but immediately after pesticides application, the additional reduction of frequency of bacterial cell proliferation (max. decrease of lambda value to 0.15 for thiram on day 14) and prolonged retardation time of colony appearance (max. increase of t(r) value to 1.39 for fenitrothion on day 1) on agar plates were found.

A technological solution was developed to process slaughter waste and farm manure and transform them into organic and mineral fertilizers. It has been shown that the formation of an enclosure on a goose farm from nitrogen-binding substances (brown coal, a mixture of brown coal with magnesite, used ash substrate) has a positive effect on reducing nitrogen emissions, even to about 80%. The presented solution is in line with ecological trends and ensures comprehensive management of agri-food waste. It reduces the loss of valuable nutrients from renewable sources, increases the efficiency of fertilizers and reduces the environmental nuisance of poultry farms. Organic-mineral fertilizers made from slaughterhouse waste and poultry manure were as effective as expensive commercial mineral fertilizers. New fertilizers helped to obtain a yield similar to the groups fertilized with mineral fertilizers: 11 t per ha for maize (grain), 0.8 t per ha for mustard (seed), 10 kg per 1 m2 of radish (all), and 18.5 kg per 1 m2 of beet (whole) while reducing production costs thanks to the use of waste materials.

The methane productivity of silage of four crop species -Zeamays L., Sorghumsaccharatum, Miscanthusxgiganteus and Miscanthussacchariflorus - was investigated. The experiments revealed that at a hydraulic retention time of 60days the volumetric methane yields from the Z.mays L. or S.saccharatum silages were higher than those from the Miscanthusxgiganteus or M.sacchariflorus silages because of the higher crude fibre content in Miscanthus spp. However, at comparable lignin concentrations in the feedstock, methane productivity for M.sacchariflorus (0.19+/-0.08L/g volatile solids) was twice that of Miscanthusxgiganteus (0.10+/-0.03L/g volatile solids). The efficiency of cellulose conversion varied from 83.6% (S. saccharatum) to 52.1% (Miscanthusxgiganteus), and hemicellulose from 88.9% (Z. mays L.) to 59.7% (Miscanthusxgiganteus). Conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose depended on the ratio of these polysaccharides to the lignin concentration of the feedstock.

The extensive abandonment of agricultural lands in the Mediterranean basin has led to large landscapes being dominated by early-successional species, characterized by high flammability and an increasing fire risk. This fact promotes fire occurrence and places ecosystems in a state of arrested succession. In this work, we assessed the effectiveness of several restoration actions in redirecting these ecosystems toward more resilient communities dominated by resprouting species. These actions included the mechanical clearing of early-successional species, the plantation of resprouting species, and the combination of both treatments. For 13 years, we assessed shifts in the successional trajectory and ecosystem flammability by changes in: species composition, species richness, ecosystem evenness, the natural colonization of resprouting species, total biomass and proportion of dead biomass. We observed that the plantation and clearing combination was a suitable strategy to promote resilience. Species richness increased as well as the presence of the resprouting species introduced by planting. The natural colonization of the resprouting species was also enhanced. These changes in the successional trajectory were accompanied by a possible reduction of fire risk by reducing dead fuel proportion. These findings are relevant for the management of Mediterranean basin areas, but also suggest new tools for redirecting systems in fire-prone areas worldwide.

The aim of this work was to analyze the impact of three different moisture contents (MC), at 45% MC, 65% MC, 75% MC, on the degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin during fungi treatment by Flammulina velutipes of Agropyron elongatum 'BAMAR' and on biogas production. The analysis of chemical composition shown that F. velutipes had greater selectivity for lignin biodegradation with the highest hemicellulose and lignin removal at 29.1% and 35.4%, respectively, and lowest cellulose removal (20.48%) at 65% MC. F. velutipes cultivated at 65% MC increased biogas production of 398.07Ndm(3)kg(-1)VS(-1), which was 120% higher than the untreated sample. These treatment conditions resulted in 134% more methane yield compared with untreated sample. The results of this study suggested that A. elongatum is a potential biomass for biogas production in agriculture biogas plant and white-rot fungus F. velutipes provides an effective methods for improve biodegradation of A. elongatum.

Nutrient removal performances of sequencing batch reactors using granular sludge for intensified biological wastewater treatment rely on optimal underlying microbial selection. Trigger factors of bacterial selection and nutrient removal were investigated in these novel biofilm systems with specific emphasis on polyphosphate- (PAO) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO) mainly affiliated with Accumulibacter and Competibacter, respectively. In a first dynamic reactor operated with stepwise changes in concentration and ratio of acetate and propionate (Ac/Pr) under anaerobic feeding and aerobic starvation conditions and without wasting sludge periodically, propionate favorably selected for Accumulibacter (35% relative abundance) and stable production of granular biomass. A Plackett-Burman multifactorial experimental design was then used to screen in eight runs of 50 days at stable sludge retention time of 15 days for the main effects of COD concentration, Ac/Pr ratio, COD/P ratio, pH, temperature, and redox conditions during starvation. At 95% confidence level, pH was mainly triggering direct Accumulibacter selection and nutrient removal. The overall PAO/GAO competition in granular sludge was statistically equally impacted by pH, temperature, and redox factors. High Accumulibacter abundances (30-47%), PAO/GAO ratios (2.8-8.4), and phosphorus removal (80-100%) were selected by slightly alkaline (pH > 7.3) and lower mesophilic (<20 °C) conditions, and under full aeration during fixed 2-h starvation. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification (84-97%) was positively correlated to pH and temperature. In addition to alkalinity, non-limited organic conditions, 3-carbon propionate substrate, sludge age control, and phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions during starvation can lead to efficient nutrient-removing granular sludge biofilm systems.

The work led to the selection of butane among five tested growth substrates, and to the development and characterization from the site's indigenous biomass of a suspended-cell consortium capable to degrade TCE (first order constant: 96 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 30 °C and 4.3 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 15 °C) with a 90 % mineralization of the organic chlorine. The consortium immobilization had strong effects on the butane and TCE degradation rates. The microbial community structure was slightly changed by a temperature shift from 30 to 15 °C, but remarkably affected by biomass adhesion. Given the higher TCE normalized degradation rate (0.59 day(-1) at 15 °C) and attached biomass concentration (0.13 gprotein Lbioreactor(-1) at 15 °C) attained, the porous ceramic carrier Biomax was selected as the best option for the packed bed reactor process. The low TeCA degradation rate exhibited by the developed consortium suggested the inclusion of a chemical pre-treatment based on the TeCA to TCE conversion via β-elimination, a very fast reaction at alkaline pH. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first attempt to develop a procedure for the development of a packed bed reactor process for the aerobic cometabolism of chlorinated solvents.

SummaryWater accounting is an unresolved issue in metabolism studies. Through epistemological analysis, we show that the problem resides in the conceptualization of social metabolism. Social metabolism has its origins in the analysis of societal energetics, which has led to an exclusive focus on society and a representation based on linear throughputs at a single scale. Whereas fossil energy resources constitute a mere stock flow for society, water constitutes a set of both funds and flows essential for the maintenance of the internal organization and stability of society and ecosystems. This means that societies and ecosystems need water for different reasons. Consequently, the analysis of water requires the simultaneous adoption of multiple narratives and scales. The development of hydrology toward a socio‐eco‐hydrology (SE‐hydrology) deals with this multidimensionality, but lacks a conceptualization of the coupled human‐water system useful to integrate the assessment of water processes at different rates and scales. We propose a conceptual framework, based on the multiscale integrated analysis of societal and ecosystem metabolism approach, that combines the perspectives of SE‐hydrology and social metabolism. This framework describes society and the embedding ecosystem as two distinct levels of the same hierarchical system (i.e., the socioecological system), expressing two distinct, but tightly interconnected, metabolic patterns (societal and ecosystem) at different spatiotemporal scales. Using food grain production in Punjab as an example, we show that this framework can accommodate the multiple interpretations of social metabolism found in different scientific fields.

Social metabolism has its origins in the analysis of societal energetics, which has led to an exclusive focus on society and a representation based on linear throughputs at a single scale. Whereas fossil energy resources constitute a mere stock flow for society, water constitutes a set of both funds and flows essential for the maintenance of the internal organization and stability of society and ecosystems. This means that societies and ecosystems need water for different reasons. Consequently, the analysis of water requires the simultaneous adoption of multiple narratives and scales. The development of hydrology toward a socio‐eco‐hydrology (SE‐hydrology) deals with this multidimensionality, but lacks a conceptualization of the coupled human‐water system useful to integrate the assessment of water processes at different rates and scales. We propose a conceptual framework, based on the multiscale integrated analysis of societal and ecosystem metabolism approach, that combines the perspectives of SE‐hydrology and social metabolism. This framework describes society and the embedding ecosystem as two distinct levels of the same hierarchical system (i.e., the socioecological system), expressing two distinct, but tightly interconnected, metabolic patterns (societal and ecosystem) at different spatiotemporal scales. Using food grain production in Punjab as an example, we show that this framework can accommodate the multiple interpretations of social metabolism found in different scientific fields.

The objective of the work reported here was to determine whether the ratio of COD/Nox has an impact on poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) metabolism in activated sludge. Furthermore, it was tested if the ratio influenced the percentage use of organic compounds present in wastewater, for endogenous respiration, oxidation, accumulation and denitrification. Gas flow rate in SBR reactor was controlled by thermal mass flow controller (TMFC). Constant amount of air entering sequencing batch reactor was automatically adjusted to stable set-point 2mg O2 L(-1). It means that DO concentration in the reactor could change with oxygen uptake. During the filling period and part of the reaction time DO was nearly zero. Feast period of the external substrate availability and famine period of little amount or no external carbon availability were determined. At 23 h of the reaction time, and COD/Nox ratio 8, denitrification took place only during feast period. What was interesting, poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate degradation was observed in the feast period as well. However, at 11h of the reaction time and COD/Nox ratio 37, denitrification occurred in feast and famine period. In the feast period PHB was accumulated and in the famine period was used as the endogenous carbon source. COD consumption to reduce 1mg N-nitrate was ranging from 1.15 to 6.26 depending on carbon source and increased when exogenous and endogenous carbon were used by activated sludge. The increase in PHB content from 0.25 to 0.43 Cmol/Cmol resulted in a double increase in the amount of nitrogen removed due to denitrification was observed.

Development of sustainable energy is a pivotal step towards solutions for today's global challenges, including mitigating the progression of climate change and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Biofuels derived from agricultural crops have already been commercialized. However the impacts on environmental sustainability and food supply have raised ethical questions about the current practices. Cyanobacteria have attracted interest as an alternative means for sustainable energy productions. Being aquatic photoautotrophs they can be cultivated in non-arable lands and do not compete for land for food production. Their rich genetic resources offer means to engineer metabolic pathways for synthesis of valuable bio-based products. Currently the major obstacle in industrial-scale exploitation of cyanobacteria as the economically sustainable production hosts is low yields. Much effort has been made to improve the carbon fixation and manipulating the carbon allocation in cyanobacteria and their evolutionary photosynthetic relatives, algae and plants. This review aims at providing an overview of the recent progress in the bioengineering of carbon fixation and allocation in cyanobacteria; wherever relevant, the progress made in plants and algae is also discussed as an inspiration for future application in cyanobacteria.

An experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions to investigate the effect of increasing concentrations of fenitrothion (2, 10 and 200 mg a.i./kg soil), diuron (1.5, 7.5 and 150 mg a.i./kg soil) and thiram (3.5, 17.5 and 350 mg a.i./kg soil) on soil respiration, bacterial counts and changes in culturable fraction of soil bacteria. To ascertain these changes, the community structure, bacterial biodiversity and process of colony formation, based on the r/K strategy concept, EP- and CD-indices and the FOR model, respectively, were determined. The results showed that the measured parameters were generally unaffected by the lowest dosages of pesticides, corresponding to the recommended field rates. The highest dosages of fenitrothion and thiram suppressed the peak SIR by 15-70% and 20-80%, respectively, while diuron increased respiration rate by 17-25% during the 28-day experiment. Also, the total numbers of bacteria increased in pesticide-treated soils. However, the reverse effect on day 1 and, in addition, in case of the highest dosages of insecticide on days 14 and 28, was observed. Analysis of the community structure revealed that in all soil treatments bacterial communities were generally dominated by K-strategists. Moreover, differences in the distribution of individual bacteria classes and the gradual domination of bacteria populations belonging to r-strategists during the experiment, as compared to control, was observed. However, on day 1, at the highest pesticide dosages, fast growing bacteria constituted only 1-10% of the total colonies number during 48 h of plate incubation, whereas in remaining samples they reached from 20 to 40% of total cfu. This effect, in case of fenitrothion, lasted till the end of the experiment. At the highest dosages of fenitrothion, diuron and at all dosages of thiram the decrease of biodiversity, as indicated by EP- and CD-indices on day 1, was found. At the next sampling time, no significant retarding or stimulating effect was detected. However, in case of CD values the higher differences were observed. The significant impact of pesticides on the physiological state of soil bacteria was not found. They were generally in dormant state (lambda < 0.5), but immediately after pesticides application, the additional reduction of frequency of bacterial cell proliferation (max. decrease of lambda value to 0.15 for thiram on day 14) and prolonged retardation time of colony appearance (max. increase of t(r) value to 1.39 for fenitrothion on day 1) on agar plates were found.

A technological solution was developed to process slaughter waste and farm manure and transform them into organic and mineral fertilizers. It has been shown that the formation of an enclosure on a goose farm from nitrogen-binding substances (brown coal, a mixture of brown coal with magnesite, used ash substrate) has a positive effect on reducing nitrogen emissions, even to about 80%. The presented solution is in line with ecological trends and ensures comprehensive management of agri-food waste. It reduces the loss of valuable nutrients from renewable sources, increases the efficiency of fertilizers and reduces the environmental nuisance of poultry farms. Organic-mineral fertilizers made from slaughterhouse waste and poultry manure were as effective as expensive commercial mineral fertilizers. New fertilizers helped to obtain a yield similar to the groups fertilized with mineral fertilizers: 11 t per ha for maize (grain), 0.8 t per ha for mustard (seed), 10 kg per 1 m2 of radish (all), and 18.5 kg per 1 m2 of beet (whole) while reducing production costs thanks to the use of waste materials.

A technological solution was developed to process slaughter waste and farm manure and transform them into organic and mineral fertilizers. It has been shown that the formation of an enclosure on a goose farm from nitrogen-binding substances (brown coal, a mixture of brown coal with magnesite, used ash substrate) has a positive effect on reducing nitrogen emissions, even to about 80%. The presented solution is in line with ecological trends and ensures comprehensive management of agri-food waste. It reduces the loss of valuable nutrients from renewable sources, increases the efficiency of fertilizers and reduces the environmental nuisance of poultry farms. Organic-mineral fertilizers made from slaughterhouse waste and poultry manure were as effective as expensive commercial mineral fertilizers. New fertilizers helped to obtain a yield similar to the groups fertilized with mineral fertilizers: 11 t per ha for maize (grain), 0.8 t per ha for mustard (seed), 10 kg per 1 m2 of radish (all), and 18.5 kg per 1 m2 of beet (whole) while reducing production costs thanks to the use of waste materials.

The methane productivity of silage of four crop species -Zeamays L., Sorghumsaccharatum, Miscanthusxgiganteus and Miscanthussacchariflorus - was investigated. The experiments revealed that at a hydraulic retention time of 60days the volumetric methane yields from the Z.mays L. or S.saccharatum silages were higher than those from the Miscanthusxgiganteus or M.sacchariflorus silages because of the higher crude fibre content in Miscanthus spp. However, at comparable lignin concentrations in the feedstock, methane productivity for M.sacchariflorus (0.19+/-0.08L/g volatile solids) was twice that of Miscanthusxgiganteus (0.10+/-0.03L/g volatile solids). The efficiency of cellulose conversion varied from 83.6% (S. saccharatum) to 52.1% (Miscanthusxgiganteus), and hemicellulose from 88.9% (Z. mays L.) to 59.7% (Miscanthusxgiganteus). Conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose depended on the ratio of these polysaccharides to the lignin concentration of the feedstock.

The extensive abandonment of agricultural lands in the Mediterranean basin has led to large landscapes being dominated by early-successional species, characterized by high flammability and an increasing fire risk. This fact promotes fire occurrence and places ecosystems in a state of arrested succession. In this work, we assessed the effectiveness of several restoration actions in redirecting these ecosystems toward more resilient communities dominated by resprouting species. These actions included the mechanical clearing of early-successional species, the plantation of resprouting species, and the combination of both treatments. For 13 years, we assessed shifts in the successional trajectory and ecosystem flammability by changes in: species composition, species richness, ecosystem evenness, the natural colonization of resprouting species, total biomass and proportion of dead biomass. We observed that the plantation and clearing combination was a suitable strategy to promote resilience. Species richness increased as well as the presence of the resprouting species introduced by planting. The natural colonization of the resprouting species was also enhanced. These changes in the successional trajectory were accompanied by a possible reduction of fire risk by reducing dead fuel proportion. These findings are relevant for the management of Mediterranean basin areas, but also suggest new tools for redirecting systems in fire-prone areas worldwide.

The aim of this work was to analyze the impact of three different moisture contents (MC), at 45% MC, 65% MC, 75% MC, on the degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin during fungi treatment by Flammulina velutipes of Agropyron elongatum 'BAMAR' and on biogas production. The analysis of chemical composition shown that F. velutipes had greater selectivity for lignin biodegradation with the highest hemicellulose and lignin removal at 29.1% and 35.4%, respectively, and lowest cellulose removal (20.48%) at 65% MC. F. velutipes cultivated at 65% MC increased biogas production of 398.07Ndm(3)kg(-1)VS(-1), which was 120% higher than the untreated sample. These treatment conditions resulted in 134% more methane yield compared with untreated sample. The results of this study suggested that A. elongatum is a potential biomass for biogas production in agriculture biogas plant and white-rot fungus F. velutipes provides an effective methods for improve biodegradation of A. elongatum.

Nutrient removal performances of sequencing batch reactors using granular sludge for intensified biological wastewater treatment rely on optimal underlying microbial selection. Trigger factors of bacterial selection and nutrient removal were investigated in these novel biofilm systems with specific emphasis on polyphosphate- (PAO) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO) mainly affiliated with Accumulibacter and Competibacter, respectively. In a first dynamic reactor operated with stepwise changes in concentration and ratio of acetate and propionate (Ac/Pr) under anaerobic feeding and aerobic starvation conditions and without wasting sludge periodically, propionate favorably selected for Accumulibacter (35% relative abundance) and stable production of granular biomass. A Plackett-Burman multifactorial experimental design was then used to screen in eight runs of 50 days at stable sludge retention time of 15 days for the main effects of COD concentration, Ac/Pr ratio, COD/P ratio, pH, temperature, and redox conditions during starvation. At 95% confidence level, pH was mainly triggering direct Accumulibacter selection and nutrient removal. The overall PAO/GAO competition in granular sludge was statistically equally impacted by pH, temperature, and redox factors. High Accumulibacter abundances (30-47%), PAO/GAO ratios (2.8-8.4), and phosphorus removal (80-100%) were selected by slightly alkaline (pH > 7.3) and lower mesophilic (<20 °C) conditions, and under full aeration during fixed 2-h starvation. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification (84-97%) was positively correlated to pH and temperature. In addition to alkalinity, non-limited organic conditions, 3-carbon propionate substrate, sludge age control, and phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions during starvation can lead to efficient nutrient-removing granular sludge biofilm systems.

Trigger factors of bacterial selection and nutrient removal were investigated in these novel biofilm systems with specific emphasis on polyphosphate- (PAO) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO) mainly affiliated with Accumulibacter and Competibacter, respectively. In a first dynamic reactor operated with stepwise changes in concentration and ratio of acetate and propionate (Ac/Pr) under anaerobic feeding and aerobic starvation conditions and without wasting sludge periodically, propionate favorably selected for Accumulibacter (35% relative abundance) and stable production of granular biomass. A Plackett-Burman multifactorial experimental design was then used to screen in eight runs of 50 days at stable sludge retention time of 15 days for the main effects of COD concentration, Ac/Pr ratio, COD/P ratio, pH, temperature, and redox conditions during starvation. At 95% confidence level, pH was mainly triggering direct Accumulibacter selection and nutrient removal. The overall PAO/GAO competition in granular sludge was statistically equally impacted by pH, temperature, and redox factors. High Accumulibacter abundances (30-47%), PAO/GAO ratios (2.8-8.4), and phosphorus removal (80-100%) were selected by slightly alkaline (pH > 7.3) and lower mesophilic (<20 °C) conditions, and under full aeration during fixed 2-h starvation. Nitrogen removal by nitrification and denitrification (84-97%) was positively correlated to pH and temperature. In addition to alkalinity, non-limited organic conditions, 3-carbon propionate substrate, sludge age control, and phase length adaptation under alternating aerobic-anoxic conditions during starvation can lead to efficient nutrient-removing granular sludge biofilm systems.
