Although Cs2AgBiBr6 halide elpasolites have gained substantial attention as potential nontoxic and stable alternatives to lead–halide perovskites, they are limited by their wide bandgaps >2.2 eV. Alloying with Sb into the pnictogen site has been shown to be an effective method to lower the bandgap, but this has not translated into improvements in photovoltaic (PV) performance. Herein, the underlying causes are investigated. Pinhole‐free films of Cs2Ag(SbxBi1−x)Br6 are achieved through antisolvent dripping, but PV devices still exhibit a reduction in power conversion efficiency from 0.44% ± 0.02% (without Sb) to 0.073% ± 0.007% (90% Sb; lowest bandgap). There is a 0.7 V reduction in the open‐circuit voltage, which correlates with the appearance of a sub‐bandgap state ≈0.7 eV below the optical bandgap in the Sb‐containing elpasolite films, as found in both absorbance and photoluminescence measurements. Through detailed Williamson–Hall analysis, it is found that adding Sb into the elpasolite films leads to an increase in film strain. This strain is relieved through aerosol‐assisted solvent treatment, which reduces both the sub‐bandgap state density and energetic disorder in the films, as well as reducing the fast early decay in the photogenerated carrier population due to trap filling. This work shows that Sb alloying leads to the introduction of extra sub‐bandgap states that limit the PV performance, but can be mitigated through post‐annealing treatment to reduce disorder and strain.

Airtightness is nowadays one of the physical parameters which determine overall building energy performance. In a wide range of states, the upper limit for air change rate at a Pa (na), air permeability rate at a Pa (qa), or specific leakage rate at a Pa (wa) is determined by the formal regulations. It should be highlighted that airtightness requirements are mainly the same around the world, disregarding any site and climatic conditions. The main goal of the presented work was to reveal the effect of individual location and surrounding infiltration rate and heat demand. The analyses were done using numerical techniques and computational models of the three buildings developed and calibrated based on the blower door test results. The compared buildings characterize by a similar geometry but differ in the air change rate at 50 Pa (n50). Analyses done for different locations and levels of sheltering by surrounding elements allow the determination of the real effect of local conditions. The obtained differences in energy demand between two locations from the same climatic zone were from 70% to 90%, depending on the airtightness of the buildings. Considering different sheltered conditions, the differences for the same location can be even 200%. The obtained results allowed for the formulation of the general conclusion that building location and level of exposure could be considered in future airtightness regulations.

I-31T aircraft, as a testbed, was fitted with 180 kW turboprop engine TP100. The scope of the work include results of ground and in-flight tests of engine compartment cooling suitability. The purpose of the cooling tests was to prove that temperatures of the propulsion components are within limits set by the engine manufacturer for the engine type in the most disadvantageous conditions on the ground and in flight up to aircraft maximum altitude, maximum ambient temperature and after standard engine shutdown. Engine oil cooling is beyond the scope of this work.

The choice of optimal plant species for phytoremediation and organic fertilization plays an important role in stabilizing the functions of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The influence of nickel, cobalt and cadmium on the biomass yield and calorific value of Festuca rubra, heavy metal concentrations in soil and plants and the microbiological, biochemical and physicochemical proprieties of soil were analyzed in a pot experiment. The tolerance index (TI) describing Festuca rubra’s ability to tolerate heavy metals, as well as the translocation (TF), accumulation (AF) and bioaccumulation (BF) factors of heavy metals in Festuca rubra were calculated. The experiment was conducted in two series: In soil fertilized and not fertilized with compost. Nickel and cobalt significantly inhibited the growth and development of Festuca rubra. The experiment demonstrated that this plant species can be grown on soil contaminated with heavy metals. Festuca rubra contained on average 46.05% C, 34.59% O, 5.91% H, 3.49% N, 0.19% S and 9.76% ash. Festuca rubra has a stable calorific value which is not affected by heavy metals; therefore, biomass harvested from heavy metal-polluted soil can be used for energy generation. The calorific value of Festuca rubra ranged from 15.924 to 16.790 MJ kg−1 plant d.m., and the heat of combustion from 17.696 to 18.576 MJ kg−1. It has a stable calorific value which is not affected by heavy metals, therefore biomass harvested from heavy metal-polluted soil can be used for energy generation. Festuca rubra is particularly useful for the phytostabilization of soil contaminated with cadmium and cobalt. Compost minimizes the adverse effects of heavy metal pollution on the microbiological, biochemical and physicochemical properties of soil.

Coke is an integral component of the blast furnace charge; therefore, it plays an important role in the integrated steelmaking process. Achieving the required coke quality parameters by producers requires the use of a high proportion of the highest quality coking coals (hard coking coals) in the coking blends, which significantly increases the unit production costs. Approximately 75% of these costs are constituted by the cost of the coal blend’s preparation. There is a deficit in the best quality coking coals on the world market and their supply are characterized by large fluctuations in quality parameters. Therefore, from the point of view of the economics of coke production, it is advantageous to produce high-quality coke from a coke blend with the highest possible content of cheaper coals. The paper presents the results of the influence of coal charge bulk density and semi-soft coking coal content in the coking blend on the textural and structural parameters of coke, which determine its quality. Research has shown that the application of increased density influences the parameters of the texture and structure of the coke, which shape its quality parameters. The use of stamp-charging technology contributes to the improvement of the coke quality or enables the production of coke of a predetermined quality from blends containing cheaper semi-soft coals.

This article presents selected methods of limiting the bearing voltages of synchronous machines with permanent magnets supplied from power electronic converters. The authors analyzed methods based on the use of various shielding windings placed in slot wedges and mounted in the stator end-winding region. The values of the parasitic capacitances of the machine, on which the levels of bearing voltages depend, were determined using the finite element method. Three-dimensional simulation models were used for the calculations. The analysis of the influence of the shielding windings on the bearing voltage waveforms was conducted on the basis of circuit models with two- and three-level converters. The obtained calculation results indicate a high potential in limiting bearing voltages.

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) release copious amounts of energy across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and so provide a window into the process of black hole formation from the collapse of massive stars. Previous early optical observations of even the most exceptional GRBs (990123 and 030329) lacked both the temporal resolution to probe the optical flash in detail and the accuracy needed to trace the transition from the prompt emission within the outflow to external shocks caused by interaction with the progenitor environment. Here we report observations of the extraordinarily bright prompt optical and gamma-ray emission of GRB 080319B that provide diagnostics within seconds of its formation, followed by broadband observations of the afterglow decay that continued for weeks. We show that the prompt emission stems from a single physical region, implying an extremely relativistic outflow that propagates within the narrow inner core of a two-component jet.

Proper busbar selection based on analytical calculations is of great importance in terms of power grid functioning and its safe usage. Experimental tests concerning busbars are very expensive and difficult to be executed. Therefore, the great advantage for setting the valid parameters for busbar systems components are analytical calculations supported by FEM (finite element method) modelling and analysis. Determining electrodynamic forces in busbar systems tends to be crucial with regard to subsidiary, dependent parameters. In this paper analytical calculations of asymmetric three-phase busbar system were carried out. Key parameters, like maximal electrodynamic forces value, mechanical strength value, busbar natural frequency, etc., were calculated. Calculations were conducted with an ANSYS model of a parallel asymmetric busbar system, which confirmed the obtained results. Moreover, showing that a model based on finite elements tends to be very helpful in the selection of unusually-shaped busbars in various electrotechnical applications, like switchgear.

Although Cs2AgBiBr6 halide elpasolites have gained substantial attention as potential nontoxic and stable alternatives to lead–halide perovskites, they are limited by their wide bandgaps >2.2 eV. Alloying with Sb into the pnictogen site has been shown to be an effective method to lower the bandgap, but this has not translated into improvements in photovoltaic (PV) performance. Herein, the underlying causes are investigated. Pinhole‐free films of Cs2Ag(SbxBi1−x)Br6 are achieved through antisolvent dripping, but PV devices still exhibit a reduction in power conversion efficiency from 0.44% ± 0.02% (without Sb) to 0.073% ± 0.007% (90% Sb; lowest bandgap). There is a 0.7 V reduction in the open‐circuit voltage, which correlates with the appearance of a sub‐bandgap state ≈0.7 eV below the optical bandgap in the Sb‐containing elpasolite films, as found in both absorbance and photoluminescence measurements. Through detailed Williamson–Hall analysis, it is found that adding Sb into the elpasolite films leads to an increase in film strain. This strain is relieved through aerosol‐assisted solvent treatment, which reduces both the sub‐bandgap state density and energetic disorder in the films, as well as reducing the fast early decay in the photogenerated carrier population due to trap filling. This work shows that Sb alloying leads to the introduction of extra sub‐bandgap states that limit the PV performance, but can be mitigated through post‐annealing treatment to reduce disorder and strain.

Airtightness is nowadays one of the physical parameters which determine overall building energy performance. In a wide range of states, the upper limit for air change rate at a Pa (na), air permeability rate at a Pa (qa), or specific leakage rate at a Pa (wa) is determined by the formal regulations. It should be highlighted that airtightness requirements are mainly the same around the world, disregarding any site and climatic conditions. The main goal of the presented work was to reveal the effect of individual location and surrounding infiltration rate and heat demand. The analyses were done using numerical techniques and computational models of the three buildings developed and calibrated based on the blower door test results. The compared buildings characterize by a similar geometry but differ in the air change rate at 50 Pa (n50). Analyses done for different locations and levels of sheltering by surrounding elements allow the determination of the real effect of local conditions. The obtained differences in energy demand between two locations from the same climatic zone were from 70% to 90%, depending on the airtightness of the buildings. Considering different sheltered conditions, the differences for the same location can be even 200%. The obtained results allowed for the formulation of the general conclusion that building location and level of exposure could be considered in future airtightness regulations.

I-31T aircraft, as a testbed, was fitted with 180 kW turboprop engine TP100. The scope of the work include results of ground and in-flight tests of engine compartment cooling suitability. The purpose of the cooling tests was to prove that temperatures of the propulsion components are within limits set by the engine manufacturer for the engine type in the most disadvantageous conditions on the ground and in flight up to aircraft maximum altitude, maximum ambient temperature and after standard engine shutdown. Engine oil cooling is beyond the scope of this work.

The choice of optimal plant species for phytoremediation and organic fertilization plays an important role in stabilizing the functions of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The influence of nickel, cobalt and cadmium on the biomass yield and calorific value of Festuca rubra, heavy metal concentrations in soil and plants and the microbiological, biochemical and physicochemical proprieties of soil were analyzed in a pot experiment. The tolerance index (TI) describing Festuca rubra’s ability to tolerate heavy metals, as well as the translocation (TF), accumulation (AF) and bioaccumulation (BF) factors of heavy metals in Festuca rubra were calculated. The experiment was conducted in two series: In soil fertilized and not fertilized with compost. Nickel and cobalt significantly inhibited the growth and development of Festuca rubra. The experiment demonstrated that this plant species can be grown on soil contaminated with heavy metals. Festuca rubra contained on average 46.05% C, 34.59% O, 5.91% H, 3.49% N, 0.19% S and 9.76% ash. Festuca rubra has a stable calorific value which is not affected by heavy metals; therefore, biomass harvested from heavy metal-polluted soil can be used for energy generation. The calorific value of Festuca rubra ranged from 15.924 to 16.790 MJ kg−1 plant d.m., and the heat of combustion from 17.696 to 18.576 MJ kg−1. It has a stable calorific value which is not affected by heavy metals, therefore biomass harvested from heavy metal-polluted soil can be used for energy generation. Festuca rubra is particularly useful for the phytostabilization of soil contaminated with cadmium and cobalt. Compost minimizes the adverse effects of heavy metal pollution on the microbiological, biochemical and physicochemical properties of soil.

Coke is an integral component of the blast furnace charge; therefore, it plays an important role in the integrated steelmaking process. Achieving the required coke quality parameters by producers requires the use of a high proportion of the highest quality coking coals (hard coking coals) in the coking blends, which significantly increases the unit production costs. Approximately 75% of these costs are constituted by the cost of the coal blend’s preparation. There is a deficit in the best quality coking coals on the world market and their supply are characterized by large fluctuations in quality parameters. Therefore, from the point of view of the economics of coke production, it is advantageous to produce high-quality coke from a coke blend with the highest possible content of cheaper coals. The paper presents the results of the influence of coal charge bulk density and semi-soft coking coal content in the coking blend on the textural and structural parameters of coke, which determine its quality. Research has shown that the application of increased density influences the parameters of the texture and structure of the coke, which shape its quality parameters. The use of stamp-charging technology contributes to the improvement of the coke quality or enables the production of coke of a predetermined quality from blends containing cheaper semi-soft coals.

This article presents selected methods of limiting the bearing voltages of synchronous machines with permanent magnets supplied from power electronic converters. The authors analyzed methods based on the use of various shielding windings placed in slot wedges and mounted in the stator end-winding region. The values of the parasitic capacitances of the machine, on which the levels of bearing voltages depend, were determined using the finite element method. Three-dimensional simulation models were used for the calculations. The analysis of the influence of the shielding windings on the bearing voltage waveforms was conducted on the basis of circuit models with two- and three-level converters. The obtained calculation results indicate a high potential in limiting bearing voltages.

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) release copious amounts of energy across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and so provide a window into the process of black hole formation from the collapse of massive stars. Previous early optical observations of even the most exceptional GRBs (990123 and 030329) lacked both the temporal resolution to probe the optical flash in detail and the accuracy needed to trace the transition from the prompt emission within the outflow to external shocks caused by interaction with the progenitor environment. Here we report observations of the extraordinarily bright prompt optical and gamma-ray emission of GRB 080319B that provide diagnostics within seconds of its formation, followed by broadband observations of the afterglow decay that continued for weeks. We show that the prompt emission stems from a single physical region, implying an extremely relativistic outflow that propagates within the narrow inner core of a two-component jet.

The aim of this paper is to present the possibility of estimation of appropriate power supply based on the renewable energy sources in the context of the whole energy system in the annual balance, taking into account the technical and the economic optimization strategies. The article presents also the simplified structure of the 100% renewable energy system supported by energy storage systems and the production of synthetic fuels.

Proper busbar selection based on analytical calculations is of great importance in terms of power grid functioning and its safe usage. Experimental tests concerning busbars are very expensive and difficult to be executed. Therefore, the great advantage for setting the valid parameters for busbar systems components are analytical calculations supported by FEM (finite element method) modelling and analysis. Determining electrodynamic forces in busbar systems tends to be crucial with regard to subsidiary, dependent parameters. In this paper analytical calculations of asymmetric three-phase busbar system were carried out. Key parameters, like maximal electrodynamic forces value, mechanical strength value, busbar natural frequency, etc., were calculated. Calculations were conducted with an ANSYS model of a parallel asymmetric busbar system, which confirmed the obtained results. Moreover, showing that a model based on finite elements tends to be very helpful in the selection of unusually-shaped busbars in various electrotechnical applications, like switchgear.
