Afonso;Abstract One of the critical areas in the outer shell of household refrigerators is the compressor compartment, which has relatively high temperatures, due to the heat generated while the compressor is running. This implies a larger heat transfer to the interior air volume and, consequently, more energy consumption. One way to decrease this temperature is to ventilate the base of the refrigerator with a small fan. In the research carried out, a decrease of 11 °C in the temperature of the surfaces close to the compressor was recorded, when the fan was running. The implications of this effect can be seen at two levels: changes in the temperature distribution at the bottom of the refrigerator envelope and the resulting dynamic effects, and a decrease in energy consumption of the entire system. Consequently, there are lower CO 2 emissions to the environment, making household refrigerators more efficient and sustainable.

Silva; N. Cruz; Sónia M. Rodrigues;Abstract Growing quantities of biomass ashes are currently produced worldwide due to the increasing consumption of biomass in energy applications. The disposal of biomass ash in landfills is costly and leads to the loss of valuable resources. Biomass ash has important macro-nutrient contents and relevant soil liming capacity, and can be recycled to soils, thus contributing to biomass-to-energy process integration and a sustainable energy production. Although the EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection has highlighted the importance of promoting soil amelioration through nutrient recycling and some Member States have already recognised biomass-ash value in a context of circular economy, recycling of this material at the EU level and the potential use of ash-based material in fertilisers is still not properly framed by the EU regulatory framework. Adequate regulation for biomass ash from the energy sector is recognised of most importance as a driving force towards implementation of correct management and valorisation of ash as a raw material. This review provides a discussion on biomass ash properties and related EU regulations, notably the Waste Framework Directive and the Fertilisers Regulation, which are relevant for implementing a strategy for valorisation of biomass ash for soil amelioration purposes. Steps needed to provide the biomass ash with an appropriate end-of-waste and/or by-product status were identified. Key product and process aspects to enable the inclusion of biomass ash in the list of materials that can be used as fertilisers or as ingredients of soil fertilisers in the scope of the revised Fertilisers Regulation were discussed. Quality and safety standards to be harmonised at the EU level, as well as necessary revisions of the risk assessment framework were also discussed here.

The authors aptly expose that land use is the main driver of biodiversity loss and discuss the land footprint of renewable energy, namely solar, wind and hydropower, mining activities and hence the biodiversity impact, compared to nuclear energy. Likewise, Mateo-Tomás and López-Bao (2022) highlight the drawbacks of nuclear energy in such regard. In this sense, they state that “.nuclear power is not exempt of environmental and socioeconomic concerns, such as operating risks, long-term radioactive wastes, high costs, thermal pollution or miningâ€. Furthermore, they indicate that “all of these issues deserve further attention in order to be minimised, and some of them must be properly accounted for, especially if fair comparisons among the land footprints of nuclear and renewable energies are intendedâ€. Lastly, the authors end by expressing that “nuclear energy should be integrated in the political agenda to prevent that acting against climate change will boost habitat degradation and, in turn, biodiversity loss.

Oliveira;The general methodology for estimating energy consumption in buildings, in accordance with the EN ISO 13790, needs the use of constants that are valid for each set of climatic conditions. Furthermore, there are variables other than building structure and weather conditions that have an influence. In this sense, recent research works showed the real effect of permeable coverings on indoor environmental conditions, by controlling indoor moisture. The effect of the associated heat and mass transfer on heating or cooling energy consumption is evident during the initial hours of building occupation. In the present paper, the general methodology of building heat demand calculation is modified to consider different levels of permeability of internal coverings, in order to obtain a more accurate model. Results showed that permeable coverings are related with a higher building utilisation factor, and that the value of this factor is higher in summer than in winter season. Consequently, despite the fact that the sensibility of energy consumption to internal coverings may be lower than to building envelope, new constants are proposed to express a relationship between building permeability and energy consumption, in order to apply the certification equation.

The adequate assessment and management of indoor air quality in healthcare facilities is of utmost importance for patient safety and occupational health purposes. This study aims to identify the recent trends of research on the topic through a systematic literature review following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology. A total of 171 articles published in the period 2015–2020 were selected and analyzed. Results show that there is a worldwide growing research interest in this subject, dispersed in a wide variety of scientific journals. A textometric analysis using the IRaMuTeQ software revealed four clusters of topics in the sampled articles: physicochemical pollutants, design and management of infrastructures, environmental control measures, and microbiological contamination. The studies focus mainly on hospital facilities, but there is also research interest in primary care centers and dental clinics. The majority of the analyzed articles (85%) report experimental data, with the most frequently measured parameters being related to environmental quality (temperature and relative humidity), microbiological load, CO2 and particulate matter. Non-compliance with the WHO guidelines for indoor air quality is frequently reported. This study provides an overview of the recent literature on this topic, identifying promising lines of research to improve indoor air quality in healthcare facilities.

Background: Focused on intergenerational sharing and on the identification of differences between generations, the project #GenerationsWithAVoice aims to identify generational inequalities, with the aim of promoting awareness of intergenerational challenges, boosting public debate and interest in public policies. Methods: Twenty focus groups were developed, and an evaluation instrument was applied. Results: (i) Young people believe that they have more knowledge, but less propensity for action, leaving this task to the following generations; (ii) the family and housing emerge as the issues with the greatest number of problems identified, but also as important resources; (iii) government and politics, community and society, and the economy are of less interest and knowledge on the part of this generation; (iv) school seems to be the ideal scenario for the implementation of strategies that lead to change. Conclusions: We highlight the role of this work in the deconstruction of beliefs regarding previous generations, the development of knowledge, and the promotion of cohesion and social support.

This paper presents experimental results obtained with a developed single-phase shunt active power filter laboratory prototype operating with different switching techniques. This active filter can compensate harmonic currents and power factor in single-phase electric installations. Its power circuit is based on a two-leg IGBT inverter, with a single capacitor in the dc side, and an inductor in the ac side. Its control system is based on a simple stratagem that enables the use of the traditional Theory of Instantaneous Reactive Power (p-q Theory), originally developed to three-phase power systems, in single-phase systems. The experimental results are obtained for the active filter operating with two different switching techniques: Periodic Sampling (with variable switching frequency) and Pulse Width Modulation (with constant switching frequency) for two different frequencies (8 kHz and 16 kHz). Three different types of loads are used: linear RL load, rectifier with RL load, and rectifier with RC load.

Afonso;Abstract One of the critical areas in the outer shell of household refrigerators is the compressor compartment, which has relatively high temperatures, due to the heat generated while the compressor is running. This implies a larger heat transfer to the interior air volume and, consequently, more energy consumption. One way to decrease this temperature is to ventilate the base of the refrigerator with a small fan. In the research carried out, a decrease of 11 °C in the temperature of the surfaces close to the compressor was recorded, when the fan was running. The implications of this effect can be seen at two levels: changes in the temperature distribution at the bottom of the refrigerator envelope and the resulting dynamic effects, and a decrease in energy consumption of the entire system. Consequently, there are lower CO 2 emissions to the environment, making household refrigerators more efficient and sustainable.

Silva; N. Cruz; Sónia M. Rodrigues;Abstract Growing quantities of biomass ashes are currently produced worldwide due to the increasing consumption of biomass in energy applications. The disposal of biomass ash in landfills is costly and leads to the loss of valuable resources. Biomass ash has important macro-nutrient contents and relevant soil liming capacity, and can be recycled to soils, thus contributing to biomass-to-energy process integration and a sustainable energy production. Although the EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection has highlighted the importance of promoting soil amelioration through nutrient recycling and some Member States have already recognised biomass-ash value in a context of circular economy, recycling of this material at the EU level and the potential use of ash-based material in fertilisers is still not properly framed by the EU regulatory framework. Adequate regulation for biomass ash from the energy sector is recognised of most importance as a driving force towards implementation of correct management and valorisation of ash as a raw material. This review provides a discussion on biomass ash properties and related EU regulations, notably the Waste Framework Directive and the Fertilisers Regulation, which are relevant for implementing a strategy for valorisation of biomass ash for soil amelioration purposes. Steps needed to provide the biomass ash with an appropriate end-of-waste and/or by-product status were identified. Key product and process aspects to enable the inclusion of biomass ash in the list of materials that can be used as fertilisers or as ingredients of soil fertilisers in the scope of the revised Fertilisers Regulation were discussed. Quality and safety standards to be harmonised at the EU level, as well as necessary revisions of the risk assessment framework were also discussed here.

Furthermore, there are variables other than building structure and weather conditions that have an influence. In this sense, recent research works showed the real effect of permeable coverings on indoor environmental conditions, by controlling indoor moisture. The effect of the associated heat and mass transfer on heating or cooling energy consumption is evident during the initial hours of building occupation. In the present paper, the general methodology of building heat demand calculation is modified to consider different levels of permeability of internal coverings, in order to obtain a more accurate model. Results showed that permeable coverings are related with a higher building utilisation factor, and that the value of this factor is higher in summer than in winter season. Consequently, despite the fact that the sensibility of energy consumption to internal coverings may be lower than to building envelope, new constants are proposed to express a relationship between building permeability and energy consumption, in order to apply the certification equation.

The adequate assessment and management of indoor air quality in healthcare facilities is of utmost importance for patient safety and occupational health purposes. This study aims to identify the recent trends of research on the topic through a systematic literature review following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology. A total of 171 articles published in the period 2015–2020 were selected and analyzed. Results show that there is a worldwide growing research interest in this subject, dispersed in a wide variety of scientific journals. A textometric analysis using the IRaMuTeQ software revealed four clusters of topics in the sampled articles: physicochemical pollutants, design and management of infrastructures, environmental control measures, and microbiological contamination. The studies focus mainly on hospital facilities, but there is also research interest in primary care centers and dental clinics. The majority of the analyzed articles (85%) report experimental data, with the most frequently measured parameters being related to environmental quality (temperature and relative humidity), microbiological load, CO2 and particulate matter. Non-compliance with the WHO guidelines for indoor air quality is frequently reported. This study provides an overview of the recent literature on this topic, identifying promising lines of research to improve indoor air quality in healthcare facilities.

Background: Focused on intergenerational sharing and on the identification of differences between generations, the project #GenerationsWithAVoice aims to identify generational inequalities, with the aim of promoting awareness of intergenerational challenges, boosting public debate and interest in public policies. Methods: Twenty focus groups were developed, and an evaluation instrument was applied. Results: (i) Young people believe that they have more knowledge, but less propensity for action, leaving this task to the following generations; (ii) the family and housing emerge as the issues with the greatest number of problems identified, but also as important resources; (iii) government and politics, community and society, and the economy are of less interest and knowledge on the part of this generation; (iv) school seems to be the ideal scenario for the implementation of strategies that lead to change. Conclusions: We highlight the role of this work in the deconstruction of beliefs regarding previous generations, the development of knowledge, and the promotion of cohesion and social support.

This paper presents experimental results obtained with a developed single-phase shunt active power filter laboratory prototype operating with different switching techniques. This active filter can compensate harmonic currents and power factor in single-phase electric installations. Its power circuit is based on a two-leg IGBT inverter, with a single capacitor in the dc side, and an inductor in the ac side. Its control system is based on a simple stratagem that enables the use of the traditional Theory of Instantaneous Reactive Power (p-q Theory), originally developed to three-phase power systems, in single-phase systems. The experimental results are obtained for the active filter operating with two different switching techniques: Periodic Sampling (with variable switching frequency) and Pulse Width Modulation (with constant switching frequency) for two different frequencies (8 kHz and 16 kHz). Three different types of loads are used: linear RL load, rectifier with RL load, and rectifier with RC load.

This paper presents experimental results obtained with a developed single-phase shunt active power filter laboratory prototype operating with different switching techniques. This active filter can compensate harmonic currents and power factor in single-phase electric installations. Its power circuit is based on a two-leg IGBT inverter, with a single capacitor in the dc side, and an inductor in the ac side. Its control system is based on a simple stratagem that enables the use of the traditional Theory of Instantaneous Reactive Power (p-q Theory), originally developed to three-phase power systems, in single-phase systems. The experimental results are obtained for the active filter operating with two different switching techniques: Periodic Sampling (with variable switching frequency) and Pulse Width Modulation (with constant switching frequency) for two different frequencies (8 kHz and 16 kHz). Three different types of loads are used: linear RL load, rectifier with RL load, and rectifier with RC load.

Since the production of photovoltaic (PV) technology occurs during peak hours demand, PV seems to be an attractive solution to integrate the energy portfolio of a sustainable island. This paper evaluates the potential of PV in Azores by modeling PV systems performance in three different system configurations: conventional flat-plate, 2-axes tracker and a concentration system, the DoubleSun® technology.
