Nowadays we are facing the emergence of new challenges, especially focused on environmental behavior and climate change and also the effects and impacts of COVID-19 world pandemic - which can restrain the attainment of the desired sustainability. It is, then, mandatory to reply to all of these challenges through the design of specific paths to attain sustainable development in a collective approach, with the involvement and the commitment of the community and performed in an integrated way. Thus, it is proposed a trans-disciplinary research method based on the European Union title recognition - European Green Capital (EGC) -, directly related to the Circular Economy (CE), together with a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This paper highlights sustainable measures and proposes common managerial strategies and policies, that can support the cities/regions' sustainable practices embedding as well as ensure its overall monitoring to measure if the actions implemented through time are adequate and efficient towards attaining CE and sustainable development. Those are based on the analysis of the best practices of the EGC, which can impact on CE, and using DEA. This approach can follow the city/region evolution and be adapted to the EGC evaluation parameters in order to understand the main characteristics that can contribute to improve governance approaches and help to foster CE into all the cities/regions' ecosystem. This work has been supported by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia through project UIDB/04728/2020.

This dissertation explores how the multinational company Unilever aims at reconciling two logics, a Sustainability and a Commercial Logic within its core business activities to achieve organizational hybridity. Based on a case study, it shows that Unilever reconciles the two logics through three distinct drivers: leadership, communication and actions. The qualitative study reveals that there is not a specific single driver that can lead to a successful integration and sustaining of logics, but rather the planned interplay between the three drivers. Resulting from my findings, I developed a model that elucidates how the two logics change over time through both internal and external dynamics.

The current fashion design, production, and consumption system, known as ‘fast fashion’, is characterized by the manufacturing of low-quality garments in a short period of time carried out in developing countries. In parallel with the deficits in social responsibility and human rights, the prevailing ‘take-make-dispose’ system in the fashion industry is one of the main causes of environmental pollution that concerns the climate change, scarcity of natural resources and health problems for the living beings. Due to these facts, discussions on Circular Design strategies – for waste reduction, components recycling, and materials reuse – became increasingly relevant throughout the globe. This paper’s aspiration is to outline a perspective towards a Circular Fashion. The concept of the Design for Sustainability requires a holistic view throughout de-signing strategies as well as the establishment of cyclical systems for the production site. Notwithstanding, the efficient integration of social and cultural dimensions are vital for Sustainable Fashion’s triumph. This work is supported by FEDER funds through the Competitiveness Factors Operational Programme - COMPETE and by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of the project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007136. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The increase of distributed generation (DG) has brought about new challenges in electrical networks electricity markets and in DG units operation and management. Several approaches are being developed to manage the emerging potential of DG, such as Virtual Power Players (VPPs), which aggregate DG plants; and Smart Grids, an approach that views generation and associated loads as a subsystem. This paper presents a multi-level negotiation mechanism for Smart Grids optimal operation and negotiation in the electricity markets, considering the advantages of VPPs’ management. The proposed methodology is implemented and tested in MASCEM – a multiagent electricity market simulator, developed to allow deep studies of the interactions between the players that take part in the electricity market negotiations.

The important task (NBI neutral beam injector for fusion) and the complexity of radiofrequency ion source need large tests (as ELISE and SPIDER) and intermediate scale tests (as NIO1 in this poster) for optimization. Conditioning (with gas) was found necessary in Cs-free operation. Cs-based operation has begun: stability improves at lower oven temperature; in both cases, lateral view cameras show beam quality. Sustainability in the fashion industry has become a widely debated subject. Different stakeholders such as, brands, designers, suppliers, fashion journals and consumers, all contribute to this issue. Although a considerable amount of research has focused on various sustainability drivers of the fashion industry, the way coalitions influence the sustainable transformation has been neglected. This dissertation focuses on the impact of such coalitions that disrupt this transition taking place and provides an outlook on the industry. To this end, the impact of coalitions analysed using the triple-bottom-line approach and the support of expert interviews. With this foundation, three scenarios were developed, and future perspectives were presented. The ‘base case’ scenario signifies, that coalitions had no impact on the industry’s transition, which will lead to an absence of decisive cooperation between stakeholders and a lack of education about the importance of the subject in the society. Consequently, the fashion industry has not developed further from the status quo, which is the reason why it remains one of the most polluting industries worldwide. In the ‘moderate’ scenario, the coalitions have slightly improved the awareness and education of certain groups in society through moderate cooperation between the industry stakeholders. Scenario ‘optimistic’ shows how the sustainable transition of the industry leads to systematic and holistic change through outstanding cooperative and educational spirit generated by the coalitions. These scenarios are designed to provide comprehensive assistance for managers and their efforts to foster the transition towards a sustainable fashion industry. Overall, the dissertation serves as a foundation for future research.

Nowadays, Tourism is an integral part of the lifestyle of much of society. It carries significant weight in the economies of many countries and is one of the leading elements of international trade. Tourism has experienced a steady growth and deep diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world (Melgosa 2017). Responsible and sustainable tourism is by no means incompatible with the growing liberalization of conditions, provided a number of principles and a certain number of rules are observed. The UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism is a fundamental frame of reference for responsible and sustainable tourism.

The aims of this research are to assess the importance and responsibility of higher education institutions in the fostering of sustainable development, to identify the barriers faced and challenges to overcome as these also affect their sustainability as teaching institutions, and to analyze the current state of the implementation of sustainability in Portuguese higher education institutions. The empirical study was undertaken in three studies (and organized in four papers). The first analyzed sustainability practices with information collected from the institutions' websites; the second continued the study with a qualitative approach by interviewing the organization leaders and stakeholders, at four Portuguese higher education institutions; and the last took a quantitative approach by examining the implementation of sustainability practice using data obtained from a questionnaire sent to all the Portuguese public higher education institutions. The research demonstrates that sustainability studies in Portuguese public higher education institutions are still scarce, and that higher education institutions are in an embryonic phase of implementing, incorporating and institutionalizing sustainability strategies, measures and policies in all their activities and dimensions. There is clear evidence that higher education institutions play an important role in the promotion of sustainability. However, the lack of financial resources is perceived as the main barriers to sustainability in these institutions. This study clearly demonstrates that although sustainable development is recognized as being very important to higher education institutions and society, it is not yet embedded in the system's strategies, activities, and policies. It is essential to identify sustainability strategies and to introduce sustainable development in all activities, through a “top down” process and involving all stakeholders. Finally, not only does the research identify the importance of a conceptual and organizational change in higher education institutions, but it also contributes to the literature on sustainable higher education institutions, as well as to how higher education for sustainable development is understood and can be improved, namely in the Portuguese higher education system.
