    The importance of the sustainability concept has gained increasing attention from scholars and practitioners. In this context, the aim of this study was to examine the determinants of intention to continue to use the new Metro in Qatar, which is considered a sustainable mode of travel. Therefore, in this paper, a special attention was paid to certain variables, such as environmental concern, perceived quality, and perceived benefits. A quantitative method approach was employed, in which data were collected based on self-administered questionnaires. A total of 1334 Qatar residents responded to the survey questionnaire, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used for hypothesis testing. The results confirmed the direct effects of perceived behavioral control, social influence, and attitudes on the intention of residents to continue to use the Metro network in their travel. Moreover, perceived behavioral control was found to play a mediating role, enhancing the indirect relationship between perceived benefits and intention to continue to use the Metro network. More importantly, environmental concerns significantly and positively affected the attitudes and perceived behavioral control of travelers; furthermore, these variables presented a mediated influence—through service quality—on the intention to continue to use the Metro network. This study enriched the sustainability behavior literature by examining the influences of crucial factors. Thus, this study is considered of great value for policy-makers who hope to maximize the awareness level of environmental sustainability among the population, in order to encourage them to embrace changes in their lifestyle towards becoming more environmentally responsible.

    One of the most interesting new approaches in the transportation research field is the Naturalistic Driver Behavior which is intended to provide insight into driver behavior during everyday trips by recording details about the driver, the vehicle and the surroundings through an unobtrusive data gathering equipment and without experimental control. In this paper, an Internet of Things solution that collects and analyzes data based on Naturalistic Driver Behavior approach is proposed. The analyzed and collected data will be used as a comprehensive review, and analysis of the existing Qatar traffic system, including traffic data infrastructure, safety planning, engineering practices and standards. Moreover, data analytics for crash prediction and the use of these predictions for the purpose of systemic and systematic network hotspot analysis, risk-based characterization of roadways, intersections, and roundabouts are developed. Finally, an integrated safety risk solution was proposed. This latter, enables decision makers and stakeholders (road users, state agencies, and law enforcement) to identify both high-risk locations and behaviors by measuring a set of dynamic variables including event-based data, roadway conditions, and driving maneuvers. More specifically, the solution consists of a driver behaviors detector system that uses mobile technologies. The system can detect and analyze several behaviors like drowsiness and yawning. Previous works are based on detecting and extracting facial landmarks from images. However, the new suggested system is based on a hybrid approach to detect driver behavior utilizing a deep learning technique using a multilayer perception classifier. In addition, this solution can also collect data about every day trips like start time, end time, average speed, maximum speed, distance and minimum speed. Furthermore, it detects for every fifteen seconds measurements like GPS position, distance, acceleration and rotational velocity along the Roll, Pitch and Yaw axes. The main advantage of the solution is to reduce safety risks on the roads while optimizing safety mitigation costs to a society. The proposed solution has three-layer architecture, namely, the perception, network, and application layers as detailed below. I. The perception layer is the physical layer, composed from several Internet of Thing devices that uses mainly use the smart phones equipped with cameras and sensors (Magnetometer, Accelerometers Gyroscope and Thermometer, GPS sensor and Orientation sensor) for sensing and gathering information about the driver behavior roads and environment as shown in Fig. 1. II. The network layer is responsible for establishing the connection with the servers. Its features are also used for transmitting and processing sensor data. In this solution, hybrid system that collect data and store them locally before sending them to the server is used. This technique proves its efficiency in case of Poor Internet coverage and unstable Internet connection. III. The application layer is responsible for delivering application specific services to end user. It consists in sending the data collected to web server in order to be treat and analyzed before displaying it to the final end user. The web service which part of the application layer is the component responsible for collecting data not only from devices but also from other sources such General Traffic Directorate at Minister of Interior to gather the crash details. This web service stocks all stored data in database server and analyses them. Then, the stored data and analysis will be available for end user via website that has direct access to the web services.     Cylindrical graphite microbial fuel cell (MFC) configuration designed by eliminating distinct casing and membrane was evaluated for bioelectrogenesis and treatment of real-field wastewaters. Both petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) and Labanah whey wastewater (LW) were used as substrates, and investigated for electricity generation and organic removal under batch mode operation. PRW showed higher bioelectricity generation (current and power generation of 3.35mA and 1.12mW at 100Ω) compared to LW (3.2mA and 1.02mW). On the contrary, higher substrate degradation efficiency was achieved using LW (72.76%) compared to PRW (45.06%). Superior function of MFC operation in terms of volumetric power density (PRW, 28.27W/m3; LW, 23.23W/m3) suggesting the feasibility of using these wastewaters for bioelectricity generation. Large sources of wastewater that generating in the Middle-East countries have potential to produce renewable energy from the treatment, which helps for the sustainable wastewater management and simultaneous renewable energy production.

    Abstract This article examines and conceptualizes the implications of the adoption of circular economy (CE) business models on operations management (OM) decision-making processes, in the areas of product design, production planning and control, and logistics/supply chains. A systematic literature review was conducted in order to identify and examine the following key areas: (1) the new demands faced by OM decision-making regarding changes in capability, work procedures, intra- and inter-organizational relationships and technologies; (2) the specific changes OM decision-making must make in order to support CE business models (based on the ReSOLVE framework); and (3) guidelines which will help designers and operations and logistics/supply chain managers develop the necessary skills to meet society and the global market's emerging demands. The findings of this research will allow operations managers to foresee the unfolding needs for capacity building in CE, and scholars can build on the results of this article to develop new research themes. Furthermore, this is the first article to describe the ways in which OM knowledge can support the transition towards the circular economy based on the perspective of dynamic capabilities.

    Chronic, low intensity herbivory by invertebrates, termed background herbivory, has been understudied in tundra, yet its impacts are likely to increase in a warmer Arctic. The magnitude of these changes is however hard to predict as we know little about the drivers of current levels of invertebrate herbivory in tundra. We assessed the intensity of invertebrate herbivory on a common tundra plant, the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa-nana complex), and investigated its relationship to latitude and climate across the tundra biome. Leaf damage by defoliating, mining and gall-forming invertebrates was measured in samples collected from 192 sites at 56 locations. Our results indicate that invertebrate herbivory is nearly ubiquitous across the tundra biome but occurs at low intensity. On average, invertebrates damaged 11.2% of the leaves and removed 1.4% of total leaf area. The damage was mainly caused by external leaf feeders, and most damaged leaves were only slightly affected (12% leaf area lost). Foliar damage was consistently positively correlated with mid-summer (July) temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation in the year of data collection, irrespective of latitude. Our models predict that, on average, foliar losses to invertebrates on dwarf birch are likely to increase by 6--7% over the current levels with a 1 textdegreeC increase in summer temperatures. Our results show that invertebrate herbivory on dwarf birch is small in magnitude but given its prevalence and dependence on climatic variables, background invertebrate herbivory should be included in predictions of climate change impacts on tundra ecosystems.

    Abstract To help address this emergency, an atmospheric water extracting (AWE) device is developed and investigated as a part of present work. The AWE device is working on vapour compression refrigeration cycle. The air moisture condenses over the evaporator coil. The amount of condensate depends on psychrometric condition of incoming air. In this paper, the performance investigations are presented of an AWE device under different climatic conditions. The machine is integrated with a climatic chamber to from different climatic conditions in the laboratory to obtain the performance characteristics of AWE device. Total seven different climatic conditions were replicated as: humid and warm, humid and mild, humid and cold, dry and warm, dry and mild, mild and the last was mild humid and warm. The results indicated that the minimum energy intensity is found as 0.75 kWh per liter of water at the rate of 1.78 L per hour for warm- humid condition and maximum energy intensity is found as 4.71 kWh per liter of water at the rate of 0.28 L per hour for mild and dry condition. The present study concludes that AWE devices are most effective in hot and humid regions.

    Greenhouse gas emission is primarily responsible for global warming and climate change, which are significantly impacting air quality, human health, business activity, and the overall economy. Corporate governance plays a critical role in determining how well companies manage the risks associated with climate change (Ko & Tai, 2019; Luo & Tang, 2021; Peters & Romi, 2014; Sullivan & Gouldson, 2017). The COVID-19 pandemic provided a natural experiment, when all aspects of human life were disrupted, to examine how corporate governance can influence a company's response to carbon emission. This study examines the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction at the micro and macro levels. It also examines this relationship before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample consists of 2,226 public firms from 41 different countries during the period 2018-2021. The data are obtained from the Refinitiv Workspace database and IQAir. To test the hypotheses, the study employs ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression analysis to identify the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction before and during the COVID-19 period. The empirical findings reveal a positive and significant association between the effectiveness of corporate governance and carbon emission reduction. The results also indicate that the strength of the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction varies for the period prior to the pandemic relative to the period during the pandemic. Furthermore, the results suggest that the East Asia & Pacific, Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and South Asia regions are associated with a greater reduction in carbon emission during COVID19 relative to other regions.     The importance of the sustainability concept has gained increasing attention from scholars and practitioners. In this context, the aim of this study was to examine the determinants of intention to continue to use the new Metro in Qatar, which is considered a sustainable mode of travel. Therefore, in this paper, a special attention was paid to certain variables, such as environmental concern, perceived quality, and perceived benefits. A quantitative method approach was employed, in which data were collected based on self-administered questionnaires. A total of 1334 Qatar residents responded to the survey questionnaire, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used for hypothesis testing. The results confirmed the direct effects of perceived behavioral control, social influence, and attitudes on the intention of residents to continue to use the Metro network in their travel. Moreover, perceived behavioral control was found to play a mediating role, enhancing the indirect relationship between perceived benefits and intention to continue to use the Metro network. More importantly, environmental concerns significantly and positively affected the attitudes and perceived behavioral control of travelers; furthermore, these variables presented a mediated influence—through service quality—on the intention to continue to use the Metro network. This study enriched the sustainability behavior literature by examining the influences of crucial factors. Thus, this study is considered of great value for policy-makers who hope to maximize the awareness level of environmental sustainability among the population, in order to encourage them to embrace changes in their lifestyle towards becoming more environmentally responsible.

    One of the most interesting new approaches in the transportation research field is the Naturalistic Driver Behavior which is intended to provide insight into driver behavior during everyday trips by recording details about the driver, the vehicle and the surroundings through an unobtrusive data gathering equipment and without experimental control. In this paper, an Internet of Things solution that collects and analyzes data based on Naturalistic Driver Behavior approach is proposed. The analyzed and collected data will be used as a comprehensive review, and analysis of the existing Qatar traffic system, including traffic data infrastructure, safety planning, engineering practices and standards. Moreover, data analytics for crash prediction and the use of these predictions for the purpose of systemic and systematic network hotspot analysis, risk-based characterization of roadways, intersections, and roundabouts are developed. Finally, an integrated safety risk solution was proposed. This latter, enables decision makers and stakeholders (road users, state agencies, and law enforcement) to identify both high-risk locations and behaviors by measuring a set of dynamic variables including event-based data, roadway conditions, and driving maneuvers. More specifically, the solution consists of a driver behaviors detector system that uses mobile technologies. The system can detect and analyze several behaviors like drowsiness and yawning. Previous works are based on detecting and extracting facial landmarks from images. However, the new suggested system is based on a hybrid approach to detect driver behavior utilizing a deep learning technique using a multilayer perception classifier. In addition, this solution can also collect data about every day trips like start time, end time, average speed, maximum speed, distance and minimum speed. Furthermore, it detects for every fifteen seconds measurements like GPS position, distance, acceleration and rotational velocity along the Roll, Pitch and Yaw axes. The main advantage of the solution is to reduce safety risks on the roads while optimizing safety mitigation costs to a society. The proposed solution has three-layer architecture, namely, the perception, network, and application layers as detailed below. I. The perception layer is the physical layer, composed from several Internet of Thing devices that uses mainly use the smart phones equipped with cameras and sensors (Magnetometer, Accelerometers Gyroscope and Thermometer, GPS sensor and Orientation sensor) for sensing and gathering information about the driver behavior roads and environment as shown in Fig. 1. II. The network layer is responsible for establishing the connection with the servers. Its features are also used for transmitting and processing sensor data. In this solution, hybrid system that collect data and store them locally before sending them to the server is used. This technique proves its efficiency in case of Poor Internet coverage and unstable Internet connection. III. The application layer is responsible for delivering application specific services to end user. It consists in sending the data collected to web server in order to be treat and analyzed before displaying it to the final end user. The web service which part of the application layer is the component responsible for collecting data not only from devices but also from other sources such General Traffic Directorate at Minister of Interior to gather the crash details. This web service stocks all stored data in database server and analyses them. Then, the stored data and analysis will be available for end user via website that has direct access to the web services.     Cylindrical graphite microbial fuel cell (MFC) configuration designed by eliminating distinct casing and membrane was evaluated for bioelectrogenesis and treatment of real-field wastewaters. Both petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) and Labanah whey wastewater (LW) were used as substrates, and investigated for electricity generation and organic removal under batch mode operation. PRW showed higher bioelectricity generation (current and power generation of 3.35mA and 1.12mW at 100Ω) compared to LW (3.2mA and 1.02mW). On the contrary, higher substrate degradation efficiency was achieved using LW (72.76%) compared to PRW (45.06%). Superior function of MFC operation in terms of volumetric power density (PRW, 28.27W/m3; LW, 23.23W/m3) suggesting the feasibility of using these wastewaters for bioelectricity generation. Large sources of wastewater that generating in the Middle-East countries have potential to produce renewable energy from the treatment, which helps for the sustainable wastewater management and simultaneous renewable energy production.

    Abstract This article examines and conceptualizes the implications of the adoption of circular economy (CE) business models on operations management (OM) decision-making processes, in the areas of product design, production planning and control, and logistics/supply chains. A systematic literature review was conducted in order to identify and examine the following key areas: (1) the new demands faced by OM decision-making regarding changes in capability, work procedures, intra- and inter-organizational relationships and technologies; (2) the specific changes OM decision-making must make in order to support CE business models (based on the ReSOLVE framework); and (3) guidelines which will help designers and operations and logistics/supply chain managers develop the necessary skills to meet society and the global market's emerging demands. The findings of this research will allow operations managers to foresee the unfolding needs for capacity building in CE, and scholars can build on the results of this article to develop new research themes. Furthermore, this is the first article to describe the ways in which OM knowledge can support the transition towards the circular economy based on the perspective of dynamic capabilities.

    Chronic, low intensity herbivory by invertebrates, termed background herbivory, has been understudied in tundra, yet its impacts are likely to increase in a warmer Arctic. The magnitude of these changes is however hard to predict as we know little about the drivers of current levels of invertebrate herbivory in tundra. We assessed the intensity of invertebrate herbivory on a common tundra plant, the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa-nana complex), and investigated its relationship to latitude and climate across the tundra biome. Leaf damage by defoliating, mining and gall-forming invertebrates was measured in samples collected from 192 sites at 56 locations. Our results indicate that invertebrate herbivory is nearly ubiquitous across the tundra biome but occurs at low intensity. On average, invertebrates damaged 11.2% of the leaves and removed 1.4% of total leaf area. The damage was mainly caused by external leaf feeders, and most damaged leaves were only slightly affected (12% leaf area lost). Foliar damage was consistently positively correlated with mid-summer (July) temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation in the year of data collection, irrespective of latitude. Our models predict that, on average, foliar losses to invertebrates on dwarf birch are likely to increase by 6--7% over the current levels with a 1 textdegreeC increase in summer temperatures. Our results show that invertebrate herbivory on dwarf birch is small in magnitude but given its prevalence and dependence on climatic variables, background invertebrate herbivory should be included in predictions of climate change impacts on tundra ecosystems.

    Abstract To help address this emergency, an atmospheric water extracting (AWE) device is developed and investigated as a part of present work. The AWE device is working on vapour compression refrigeration cycle. The air moisture condenses over the evaporator coil. The amount of condensate depends on psychrometric condition of incoming air. In this paper, the performance investigations are presented of an AWE device under different climatic conditions. The machine is integrated with a climatic chamber to from different climatic conditions in the laboratory to obtain the performance characteristics of AWE device. Total seven different climatic conditions were replicated as: humid and warm, humid and mild, humid and cold, dry and warm, dry and mild, mild and the last was mild humid and warm. The results indicated that the minimum energy intensity is found as 0.75 kWh per liter of water at the rate of 1.78 L per hour for warm- humid condition and maximum energy intensity is found as 4.71 kWh per liter of water at the rate of 0.28 L per hour for mild and dry condition. The present study concludes that AWE devices are most effective in hot and humid regions.

    Greenhouse gas emission is primarily responsible for global warming and climate change, which are significantly impacting air quality, human health, business activity, and the overall economy. Corporate governance plays a critical role in determining how well companies manage the risks associated with climate change (Ko & Tai, 2019; Luo & Tang, 2021; Peters & Romi, 2014; Sullivan & Gouldson, 2017). The COVID-19 pandemic provided a natural experiment, when all aspects of human life were disrupted, to examine how corporate governance can influence a company's response to carbon emission. This study examines the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction at the micro and macro levels. It also examines this relationship before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample consists of 2,226 public firms from 41 different countries during the period 2018-2021. The data are obtained from the Refinitiv Workspace database and IQAir. To test the hypotheses, the study employs ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression analysis to identify the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction before and during the COVID-19 period. The empirical findings reveal a positive and significant association between the effectiveness of corporate governance and carbon emission reduction. The results also indicate that the strength of the relationship between corporate governance and carbon emission reduction varies for the period prior to the pandemic relative to the period during the pandemic. Furthermore, the results suggest that the East Asia & Pacific, Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and South Asia regions are associated with a greater reduction in carbon emission during COVID19 relative to other regions.
