Despite climate change affecting areas all around the world, the adverse impacts of climate change are unequally distributed, causing specific populations to be more susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Addressing climate inequalities in health research requires a climate justice approach, which prioritizes recognitional, distributional, and procedural justice in research and intervention design. Pregnant individuals are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts since pregnancy represents a time of both psychological and physiological change that can be extremely sensitive to the environment. Nevertheless, there are few studies examining the association between pregnancy health and climate justice. This review evaluates the status of climate change impacts and pregnancy health outcomes through recognitional, distributive, and procedural justice definitions. We identify four themes already present in the literature: 1. Vulnerable Populations Within an Already Vulnerable Population, 2. Need for More Ecological-level Studies, 3. Addressing the Structural Factors that Drive Climate Injustice, and 4. Community-Centered Solutions Moving Forward. Our findings emphasize the importance of transdisciplinary, participatory, and multisectoral collaboration to improve climate-related pregnancy health interventions.

Abstract Design and implementation of advanced membrane formulations for selective transport of ions and molecular species are critical for creating the next generations of fuel cells and separation devices. It is necessary to understand the detailed transport mechanisms over time- and length-scales relevant to the device operation, both in laboratory models and in working systems under realistic operational conditions. Neutron scattering techniques including quasi-elastic neutron scattering, reflectivity and imaging are implemented at beamline stations at reactor and spallation source facilities worldwide. With the advent of new and improved instrument design, detector methodology, source characteristics and data analysis protocols, these neutron scattering techniques are emerging as a primary tool for research to design, evaluate and implement advanced membrane technologies for fuel cell and separation devices. Here we describe these techniques and their development and implementation at the ILL reactor source (Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France) and ISIS Neutron and Muon Spallation source (Harwell Science and Technology Campus, UK) as examples. We also mention similar developments under way at other facilities worldwide, and describe approaches such as combining optical with neutron Raman scattering and x-ray absorption with neutron imaging and tomography, and carrying out such experiments in specialised fuel cells designed to mimic as closely possible actual operando conditions. These experiments and research projects will play a key role in enabling and testing new membrane formulations for efficient and sustainable energy production/conversion and separations technologies.

Katie M. Stiles in OpenAIREApproximately 8% of the world population and 35-45% of East Asians are carriers of the hereditary disorder aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) deficiency. ALDH2 plays a central role in the liver to metabolize ethanol. With the common E487K variant, there is a deficiency of ALDH2 function; when ethanol is consumed, there is a systemic accumulation of acetaldehyde, an intermediate product in ethanol metabolism. In ALDH2-deficient individuals, ethanol consumption acutely causes the "Alcohol Flushing Syndrome" with facial flushing, tachycardia, nausea, and headaches. With chronic alcohol consumption, ALDH2 deficiency is associated with a variety of disorders, including a remarkably high risk for aerodigestive tract cancers. Acetaldehyde is a known carcinogen. The epidemiologic data relating to the association of ALDH2 deficiency and cancer risk are striking: ALDH2 homozygotes who are moderate-to-heavy consumers of ethanol have a 7-12-fold increased risk for esophageal cancer, making ALDH2 deficiency the most common hereditary disorder associated with an increased cancer risk. In this review, we summarize the genetics and biochemistry of ALDH2, the epidemiology of cancer risk associated with ALDH2 deficiency, the metabolic consequences of ethanol consumption associated with ALDH2 deficiency, and gene therapy strategies to correct ALDH2 deficiency and its associated cancer risk. With the goal of reducing the risk of aerodigestive tract cancers, in the context that ALDH2 is a hereditary disorder and ALDH2 functions primarily in the liver, ALDH2 deficiency is an ideal target for the application of adeno-associated virus-mediated liver-directed gene therapy to prevent cancer.

Crystal in OpenAIREAldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) deficiency constitutes one of the most common hereditary enzyme deficiencies, affecting 35% to 40% of East Asians and 8% of the world population. It causes the well-known Asian Alcohol Flush Syndrome, characterized by facial flushing, palpitation, tachycardia, nausea, and other unpleasant feelings when alcohol is consumed. It is also associated with a marked increase in the risk of a variety of serious disorders, including esophageal cancer and osteoporosis. Our recent studies with murine models have demonstrated that a one-time administration of an adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene transfer vector expressing the human ALDH2 coding sequence (AAVrh.10hALDH2) will correct the deficiency state and prevent alcohol-induced abnormalities of the esophagus and bone. If successful in humans, such strategy would reduce the increased risk-associated disorders such as esophageal cancer and osteoporosis, but also prevent the Asian Alcohol Flush Syndrome. This treatment thus raises ethical concerns: although it would potentially prevent fatal disease, it could also allow affected individuals to drink alcohol without suffering the Asian Alcohol Flush Syndrome and, hence, potentially enable personal destructive behavior. Here we explore the ethical arguments against the development of a gene therapy for ALDH2 deficiency and we find them wanting. We contend that development of such treatments is ethically appropriate and should be part and parcel of the solutions offered against the condition.

While UDA has gained popularity for text classification, open questions linger over which design decisions are necessary and over how to extend the method to sequence labeling tasks. This method has recently gained traction for text classification. In this paper, we re-examine UDA and demonstrate its efficacy on several sequential tasks. Our main contribution is an empirical study of UDA to establish which components of the algorithm confer benefits in NLP. Notably, although prior work has emphasized the use of clever augmentation techniques including back-translation, we find that enforcing consistency between predictions assigned to observed and randomly substituted words often yields comparable (or greater) benefits compared to these complex perturbation models. Furthermore, we find that applying its consistency loss affords meaningful gains without any unlabeled data at all, i.e., in a standard supervised setting. In short: UDA need not be unsupervised, and does not require complex data augmentation to be effective.
