The impact of multiphase reactions involving nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and aromatic compounds was simulated in this study. A mechanism (CAPRAM 2.4, MODAC Mechanism) was applied for the aqueous phase reactions, whereas RACM was applied for the gas phase chemistry. Liquid droplets were considered as monodispersed with a mean radius of 0.1 µm and a liquid content (LC) of 50 µg m-3. The multiphase mechanism has been further extended to the chemistry of aromatics, i.e. reactions involving benzene, toluene, xylene, phenol and cresol have been added. In addition, reaction of NO2 with dissociated hydroxyl substituted aromatic compounds has also been implemented. These reactions proceed through charge exchange leading to nitrite ions and therefore to nitrous acid formation. The strength of this source was explored under urban polluted conditions. It was shown that it may increase gas phase HONO levels under some conditions and that the extent of this effect is strongly pH dependent. Especially under moderate acidic conditions (i.e. pH above 4) this source may represent more than 75% of the total HONO/NO2 - production rate, but this contribution drops down close to zero in acidic droplets (as those often encountered in urban environments).

Nianpeng He in OpenAIRESignificanceEstimates of nutrient allocation in different plant tissues and the relationships between the nutrient contents and photosynthetic capacity are critical to predicting ecosystem carbon sequestration under global change. Here, we provide an assessment of large-scale patterns of community-level nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in different plant tissues and then examine how nutrient allocations are coupled with plant productivity. The results show that nutrient concentrations in leaves are less responsive to abiotic environments than those in woody stems and roots (stable leaf nutrient concentration hypothesis); the relationships between vegetation primary productivity and leaf nutrient contents are stronger when less nutrients are allocated to the woody tissues (productivity–nutrient allocation hypothesis) and are stronger in deciduous than in evergreen vegetation (productivity–leaf lifespan hypothesis).

Moutinho; Ramesh Dhere; Chun-Sheng Jiang; Mowafak Al-Jassim;We have investigated the microelectrical properties of CdTe thin films using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) and scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM). Two films with the configurations of substrate and superstrate were subjected to the characterization studies. The electrical potential and resistance were properly mapped with the substrate film but not with the superstrate film because the underlying CdS/CdTe junction largely impacted the characterizations. The higher SKPFM potential on grain boundaries (GBs) of the substrate film than on the grain surface indicates positively charged GBs and upward band bending around the GB; therefore, the GBs are either depleted or inverted. The SSRM resistance mapping on this film shows nonuniformities and features that are associated with the grain structure and facets. However, the GBs do not exhibit distinct characteristic resistance. Comparing the low resistance channel along the GBs of high-performance CIGS films, the SSRM mapping of CdTe supports depletion of the GBs. In SSRM measurement, it is critical to adequately indent the probe to the film, and to apply a bias voltage larger than the onset voltage of the probe/film barrier, so that the contact resistance is minimized and that the local spreading resistance of CdTe film beneath the probe is measured.

Chromium (Cr) exposure during gestation causes malformations in animal experiments. In this multicenter case-control study, we initially involved 130 orofacial clefts (OFCs) and 260 controls to assess the association between Cr concentration and risk for OFCs. Then, umbilical cord serum (49 vs. 119) and cord tissue (84 vs. 142) were used to validate the association between Cr and OFCs. We found that maternal serum Cr concentrations in OFC cases were significantly higher than those in controls. Compared with the lowest tertile of maternal serum Cr concentration, the highest tertile of Cr increased the risk for OFCs [OR = 2.14 (1.14-4.05)]. In the validation cohort of umbilical cord serum and tissue, higher concentrations of Cr were associated with increased risks for OFCs in a dose-dependent manner (all Ps for trends <0.05). Cr concentrations in maternal serum and cord serum showed a positive correlation. The Cr concentration in cord serum was inversely correlated with egg and milk consumption frequencies, and the Cr concentration in cord tissue was positively associated with indoor coal burning. In conclusion, prenatal Cr exposure is a risk factor for OFCs, and indoor coal burning during pregnancy may be one of the sources of Cr exposure.

Saurav Talukdar in OpenAIREDatacenter power demand has been continuously growing and is the key driver of its cost. An accurate mapping of compute resources (CPU, RAM, etc.) and hardware types (servers, accelerators, etc.) to power consumption has emerged as a critical requirement for major Web and cloud service providers. With the global growth in datacenter capacity and associated power consumption, such models are essential for important decisions around datacenter design and operation. In this paper, we discuss two classes of statistical power models designed and validated to be accurate, simple, interpretable and applicable to all hardware configurations and workloads across hyperscale datacenters of Google fleet. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest scale power modeling study of this kind, in both the scope of diverse datacenter planning and real-time management use cases, as well as the variety of hardware configurations and workload types used for modeling and validation. We demonstrate that the proposed statistical modeling techniques, while simple and scalable, predict power with less than 5% Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE) for more than 95% diverse Power Distribution Units (more than 2000) using only 4 features. This performance matches the reported accuracy of the previous started-of-the-art methods, while using significantly less features and covering a wider range of use cases.

Zhang, H in OpenAIREAbstractGold, silver, platinum and palladium typically crystallize with the face-centred cubic structure. Here we report the high-yield solution synthesis of gold nanoribbons in the 4H hexagonal polytype, a previously unreported metastable phase of gold. These gold nanoribbons undergo a phase transition from the original 4H hexagonal to face-centred cubic structure on ligand exchange under ambient conditions. Using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy, the strong infrared plasmon absorption of single 4H gold nanoribbons is observed. Furthermore, the 4H hexagonal phases of silver, palladium and platinum can be readily stabilized through direct epitaxial growth of these metals on the 4H gold nanoribbon surface. Our findings may open up new strategies for the crystal phase-controlled synthesis of advanced noble metal nanomaterials.

In this study, Myriophyllum elatinoides growth under different nitrogen (N) concentrations (2, 250, 300, 350 and 400 mg L-1) and changes in rhizosphere bacterial community structure were investigated. High N (>300 mg L-1) concentrations caused reduction in M. elatinoides biomass. Growth tended to stabilize at 49 days. N concentration in roots were higher than that in stems and leaves under high N conditions. TN and NH4+ removal efficiencies reached 84.0% and 87.2%, respectively, in M. elatinoides surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs). Rhizosphere bacterial diversity increased over time. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroidetes dominated at the phylum level. Genera Turicibacter, Allochromatium, and Methylocystis increased at low N (<300 mg L-1) concentrations, while Pseudomonas increased at high N concentrations over the experimental period. Redundancy analysis showed that pH was strongly correlated with changes in rhizosphere bacterial community structure. These findings helped to insight into N removal mechanism in M. elatinoides.

Pseudo-steady-state constant is an indispensable parameter for establishing these new type rate decline curves and works as a bridge linking conventional productivity and new type productivity. Refracturing is widely used to enhance tight oil wells’ productivity and improve their economic benefits, the pseudo-steady-state constant of refracturing horizontal wells has been presented in our previous research, but an in-depth discussion on the definition, accuracy, sensitivity, and application of this constant has not been conducted. It results in the insufficient understanding of the physical meaning, characteristics, and functions of pseudo-steady-state constant at present. In this study, taking the derived pseudo-steady-state constant for refracturing horizontal wells with fracture reorientation as an example, its accuracy was verified by an equivalent model presented in the literature, and the sensitivity of relevant key parameters on this constant was investigated. For the refracturing horizontal well defined in this study, pseudo-steady-state constant is independent of time, and related to fracture conductivity, fracture face damage, reorientation fracture number and permeability anisotropy. Results show that this constant decreases with the increase of fracture conductivity, but tends to remain unchanged when fracture conductivity increases to a certain extent. Meanwhile, this constant shows a positive correlation with fracture face damage and permeability anisotropy, but an inverse correlation with reorientation fracture number. Blasingame type rate decline curves of refracturing horizontal wells with fracture reorientation were also established, regarding as a practical application of this pseudo-steady-state constant and a concrete manifestation of its bridge-linking function. These type curves are directly conducive to the inversion of reservoir properties and fracturing parameters and the prediction of future productivity for refracturing horizontal wells. More importantly, this study is helpful to understand and strengthen the role and importance of pseudo-steady-state constant, and also beneficial to the establishment of new type rate decline curves of other similar models.
