Girtan, Mihaela in OpenAIREAbstract Cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor thin films were obtained by thermal vacuum evaporation (TVE) on optical glass substrates. The optical characterizations of CdTe thin films were made by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and optical spectrophotometry. The optical constants (refractive indices and extinction coefficients) were obtained for CdTe thin films of different thicknesses. High absorption coefficients of order 105 cm−1 and suitable optical bandgaps values of 1.5 eV were obtained. The surface morphology of the obtained films was investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The influences of post-deposition thermal treatment on CdTe morphological properties were discussed. The current–voltage characteristics of CdTe films were recorded at temperatures in the range 150–280 K. An electrical analysis of the conduction mechanisms specific for different voltage ranges was also employed.

The effects of extreme droughts on trees are difficult to disentangle given the inherent complexity of drought events (frequency, severity, duration, and timing during the growing season). Besides, drought effects might be modulated by trees’ phenotypic variability, which is, in turn, affected by long‐term local selective pressures and management legacies. Here we investigated the magnitude and the temporal changes of tree‐level resilience (i.e., resistance, recovery, and resilience) to extreme droughts. Moreover, we assessed the tree‐, site‐, and drought‐related factors and their interactions driving the tree‐level resilience to extreme droughts. We used a tree‐ring network of the widely distributed Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) along a 2,800 km latitudinal gradient from southern Spain to northern Germany. We found that the resilience to extreme drought decreased in mid‐elevation and low productivity sites from 1980–1999 to 2000–2011 likely due to more frequent and severe droughts in the later period. Our study showed that the impact of drought on tree‐level resilience was not dependent on its latitudinal location, but rather on the type of sites trees were growing at and on their growth performances (i.e., magnitude and variability of growth) during the predrought period. We found significant interactive effects between drought duration and tree growth prior to drought, suggesting that Scots pine trees with higher magnitude and variability of growth in the long term are more vulnerable to long and severe droughts. Moreover, our results indicate that Scots pine trees that experienced more frequent droughts over the long‐term were less resistant to extreme droughts. We, therefore, conclude that the physiological resilience to extreme droughts might be constrained by their growth prior to drought, and that more frequent and longer drought periods may overstrain their potential for acclimation.

Abstract Inclusive J/ψ production is studied in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 TeV by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel down to zero transverse momentum p T, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L int = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb −1. The measured p T-integrated inclusive J/ψ production cross sec- tion is dσ/dy = 5.64 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.33(syst.) ± 0.12(lumi.) μb. The p T-differential cross section d2 σ/dp Tdy is measured in the p T range 0–10 GeV/c and compared with state-of- the-art QCD calculations. The J/ψ 〈p T〉 and $$ \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle $$ p T 2 are extracted and compared with results obtained at other collision energies.

Wang, Z. in OpenAIREAbstract A search has been made for events containing an energetic jet and an imbalance in transverse momentum using a data sample of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. This signature is common to both dark matter and extra dimensions models. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. The number of observed events is consistent with the standard model expectation. Constraints on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections are determined for both spin-independent and spin-dependent interaction models. For the spin-independent model, these are the most constraining limits for a dark matter particle with mass below 3.5 GeV/c 2, a region unexplored by direct detection experiments. For the spin-dependent model, these are the most stringent constraints over the 0.1–200 GeV/c 2 mass range. The constraints on the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali model parameter M D determined as a function of the number of extra dimensions are also an improvement over the previous results.

Denitrification in floodplain soils is one of the main biological processes emitting and reducing nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas, and the main process responsible for the buffering capacity of riparian zones against diffuse nitrate pollution.2. The aim of this study was to measure denitrification rates under a wide range of current climatic conditions and hydrological regimes in Europe (from latitude 64°N to latitude 42°N and from longitude 2°W to longitude 25°E), in order to determine the response patterns of this microbial process under different climatic and hydrological conditions, and to identify denitrification proxies robust enough to be used at the European scale.3. Denitrification activity was significant in all the floodplain soils studied whatever the latitude. However, we found an increase in rates of an order of magnitude from high to mid latitudes. Maximum rates (above 30 g N m−2 month−1) were measured in the maritime conditions of the Trent floodplain. These rates are similar to mineralisation rates measured in alluvial soils and of the same order of magnitude as the amount of N stored in herbaceous plants in alluvial soils.4. We used Multivariate Adaptative Regression Splines to relate the response variable denitrification with five relevant predictors, namely soil moisture, temperature, silt plus clay, nitrate content and herbaceous plant biomass.5. Soil moisture, temperature, and nitrate were the three main control variables of microbial denitrification in alluvial soils in decreasing order of importance.6. The model developed for denitrification with interaction effects outperformed a pure additive model. Soil moisture was involved in all interactions, emphasising its importance in predicting denitrification.7. These results are discussed in the context of scenarios for future change in European hydrological regimes.

Christian Ghiaus in OpenAIREAbstract A building is permanently in thermodynamic non-equilibrium due to changing weather, free gains and indoor temperature set-point. Load calculation in dynamic conditions is an essential goal of building energy simulation. This paper demonstrates that the load calculation is a control problem. Supposing that the thermal model of the building is linear and that the model of the building, the weather conditions and occupational program are known in the design stage, the paper proposes an unconstrained optimal control algorithm which uses feed-forward to compensate the weather conditions and model predictive programming (MPP) for set-point tracking. MPP is obtained by modifying the dynamic matrix control (DMC), a variant of model predictive control (MPC). The peak load depends on the set-back time of the indoor temperature: smaller the set-back time, larger the peak load, but smaller energy consumption. Then, the choice of the weighting coefficients in the model predictive programming may be done on economical considerations.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a recalcitrant xenobiotic pharmaceutical pollutant highly stable in soil and wastewater during treatment. The biodegradation of CBZ using streptomycetes has been few studied up to now. Sixteen newly filamentous bacteria belong to genus Streptomyces spp. isolated from different Romanian soil samples and three strains from a collection of microorganisms (MIUG) were morphologically characterized, tested based on their resistance against CBZ toxicity and then selected as agents for bioremediation. Five Streptomyces spp. strains coded MIUG 4.88, MIUG 4.89, SNA, LP1 and LP2 showed CBZ tolerance at all of the tested concentrations, i.e. 0.05, 0.2, 1, 5 and 8 mg L⁻¹. Two of these (MIUG 4.89 and SNA strains) were selected based on their resistance to target compound and were then assessed for CBZ biodegradation. The strain Streptomyces MIUG 4.89 showed an interesting efficiency for CBZ removal, with a yield of 35% when it was cultivated in submerged conditions on a minimal medium supplemented with 5 g L⁻¹ glucose. This ability was linked to extracellular laccase production. These results are promising for the use of these filamentous bacteria as bioremediation agents.

Nowadays the importance of thermomechanical engines is recognized worldwide. Since the industrial revolution, physicists and engineers have sought to maximize the efficiency of these machines, but also the mechanical energy or the power output of the engine, as we have recently found. The optimization procedure applied in many works in the literature focuses on considering new objective functions including economic and environmental criteria (i.e., ECOP ecological coefficient of performance). The debate here is oriented more towards fundamental aspects. It is known that the maximum of the power output is not obtained under the same conditions as the maximum of efficiency. This is shown, among other things, by the so-called nice radical that accounts for efficiency at maximum power, most often for the endoreversible configuration. We propose here to enrich the model and the debate by emphasizing the fundamental role of the heat transfer entropy together with the production of entropy, accounting for the external or internal irreversibilities of the converter. This original modeling to our knowledge, leads to new and more general results that are reported here. The main consequences of the approach are emphasized, and new limits of the efficiency at maximum energy or power output are obtained.

Saving energy has an important role in the concerted actions to protect the planet from the effects of global warming, particularly the energy consumed by the existing buildings (with various energy consuming functions, inefficient energy), by implementing environmentally friendly solutions. The present paper emphasizes the need to include elements to stimulate the renovation of the existing buildings and of their energy efficiency in the national strategies, these constructions being important energy consumers. The research started with two case studies (2 hospital buildings) dating from 70-80s, with the aim to be energy efficient and modern constructions in Eastern Europe. In the presented best practice model, significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, primary energy consumption along with the use of renewable energy have been achieved by transforming some energy-inefficient buildings into intelligent buildings. Thus, the authors propose a new stake: "70-70-70" for similar buildings.

This paper deals with the extraction and emulsifying properties of proteins from Chlorella vulgaris. Solubilisation of proteins has been achieved using high pressure cell disrupter under pH=7 or pH=12. The higher solubilisation yield (52±3%w/w) was obtained using a combination of alkaline conditions and mechanical treatments (2.7kbar). After solubilisation, proteins were recovered by two procedures: precipitation in acid media and concentration/fractionation by tangential ultrafiltration. Proteins were analysed for their molecular weights, isoelectric points and amino acids compositions and their emulsifying properties were quantified and compared to those of commercial ingredients. In spite of lower yield, better emulsifying capacity was obtained when protein solubilisation takes place at pH=7 and when using proteins from permeate of tangential ultrafiltration. In all cases, emulsifying capacity (1780±20 and 3090±50mLoil/g protein) and stability (72±1% and 79±1%) of microalgae proteins remained comparable or higher than the commercial ingredients such as sodium caseinate.
