AbstractA metal‐free organic sensitizer, suitable for the application in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), has been designed, synthesized and characterized both experimentally and theoretically. The structure of the novel donor–acceptor–π‐bridge–acceptor (D–A–π–A) dye incorporates a triphenylamine (TPA) segment and 4‐(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol‐4‐ylethynyl)benzoic acid (BTEBA). The triphenylamine unit is widely used as an electron donor for photosensitizers, owing to its nonplanar molecular configuration and excellent electron‐donating capability, whereas 4‐(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol‐4‐ylethynyl)benzoic acid is used as an electron acceptor unit. The influences of I3−/I−, [Co(bpy)3]3+/2+ and [Cu(tmby)2]2+/+ (tmby=4,4′,6,6′‐tetramethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine) as redox electrolytes on the DSSC device performance were also investigated. The maximal monochromatic incident photon‐to‐current conversion efficiency (IPCE) reached 81 % and the solar light to electrical energy conversion efficiency of devices with [Cu(tmby)2]2+/+ reached 7.15 %. The devices with [Co(bpy)3]3+/2+ and I3−/I− electrolytes gave efficiencies of 5.22 % and 6.14 %, respectively. The lowest device performance with a [Co(bpy)3]3+/2+‐based electrolyte is attributed to increased charge recombination.

One of the factors limiting the deployment of VO 2 films in TC devices is the growth temperature τ s . At present, temperatures in excess of 450 °C are required, which clearly can be an impediment especially for temperature-sensitive substrates. Here we address the issue of high τ s by synthesizing VO 2 thin films from highly ionized fluxes of depositing species generated in high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) discharges. The use of ions facilitates low-temperature film growth because the energy of the depositing species can be readily manipulated by substrate bias. For comparison, films were also synthesized by pulsed direct current magnetron sputtering. Structural and optical characterization of VO 2 thin films on ITO-coated glass substrates confirms previous results that HiPIMS allows τ s to be reduced from ~500 to ~300 °C. Importantly, we demonstrated that HiPIMS permits the composition and TC response of the films to be tuned by altering the energy of the deposition flux via substrate bias. An optimum ion energy of 100 eV was identified, which points at a potential for further reduction of τ s thereby opening new possibilities for industrially-relevant applications of VO 2 -based TC thin films. Weak TC activity was observed even at τ s ≈200 °C in HiPIMS-produced films.

Abstract: The beneficial effect of the ‘1‐drink‐a‐day’ lifestyle is suggested by studies of cardiovascular health, and this recommendation is increasingly followed in many countries. The main objective of this study was to determine whether this pattern of ethanol use would be detrimental to a pregnant woman. We exposed a primary culture of rat cerebellum from embryonic day 17 (corresponding to second trimester in humans) to ethanol at a concentration of 17.6 mM which is roughly equivalent to one glass of wine. Acutely, there was no change in cell viability after 5 or 8 days of exposure relative to control. By 11 days, a reduction in the number of viable cells was observed without an accompanying change in caspase‐3 activity (marker of apoptotic cell death), suggesting changes in cell proliferation. As the proportion of nestin‐positive cells was higher in the ethanol‐treated cultures after 5 days, we hypothesized that an increase in differentiation to neurons would compensate for the ongoing neuronal death. However, there were limits to this compensatory ability as the relative proportion of nestin‐positive cells was decreased after 11 days. To further illustrate the negative long‐term effects of this ethanol dose, cultures were exposed for 30 days. After this period, virtually no neurons or myelinating oligodendrocytes were present in the ethanol‐treated cultures. In conclusion, chronic exposure to ethanol, even at small doses, dramatically and persistently affects normal development.

Maschio, Lorenzo in OpenAIREHigh-performance permanent magnets (PM) are compounds with outstanding intrinsic magnetic properties. Most PMs are obtained from a favorable combination of rare earth metals (RE = Nd, Pr, Ce) with transition metals (TM = Fe, Co). Amongst them, CeFe11Ti claims considerable attention due to its large Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, and significant magnetocrystalline anisotropic energy. CeFe11Ti has several potential applications, in particular, in the development of electric motors for future automatic electrification. In this work, we shed some light on the mictrostructure of this compound by performing periodic hybrid-exchange density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We use a combined approach of atom-centered local orbitals, plane waves and full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) for our computations. The electronic configuration of the atoms involved in different steps of formation of the crystal structure of CeFe11Ti gives an explanation on the effect of Ce and Ti on its magnetic properties. While Ti stabilizes the structure, atomic orbitals of Ce hybridizes with Fe atomic orbitals to a significant extent and alters the electronic bands. Our calculations confirm a valence of 3+ for Ce, which has been deemed crucial to obtain a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In addition, we analyze several spin configurations, with the ferromagnetic configuration being most stable. We compare and contrast our data to those available and provide an insight for further development of optimized high-performance PMs. Moreover, we compute the Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy of this compound by means of two approaches: the Force Theorem and a full-potential LMTO method.

Except for the sample with a final [Cu]/([In] + [Ga]) ratio of 1.0, the samples were Cu-poor at all times during the evaporation. The variation in copper was found to influence the material properties in several ways: 1) Changing the Cu content had a strong impact on In and Ga interdiffusion, resulting in decreased Ga gradients in samples with large Cu deficiency; 2) the Cu-poor Cu(In,Ga)3Se5 phase was detected in absorbers with [Cu]/([In] + [Ga]) ratios of 0.65 and below; and 3) the grain size changed significantly with the Cu variation. We observe a trend of reduced solar cell efficiencies for [Cu]/([In] + [Ga]) ratios of 0.65 and below, with an efficiency of 13.4% for the sample with a [Cu]/([In] + [Ga]) ratio of only 0.5, i.e., far from stoichiometry. We tentatively attribute the efficiency loss to a high concentration of point defects caused by the Cu deficiency.

Enzymatic electrodes with high internal capacitance, based on cellulose/polypyrrole composite were optimized and utilized to design improved enzymatic fuel cell. Fructose dehydrogenase Gluconobacter sp. specifically adsorbed on the cellulose/polypyrrole matrix and electrophoretically immobilized and electrochemically entrapped Laccase Trametes versicolor, were used as the anode and cathode bioelectrocatalysts, respectively. The cellulose/polypyrrole composite film exhibited pseudocapacitive properties under mild pH conditions. Following modification with carboxylic groups the composite material enabled highly efficient adsorption of enzyme and provided good electrical contact between the enzymatic active sites and the electrode surface. The modified cellulose/polypyrrole composite based electrode was used for the anode leading to mediatorless fructose oxidation giving large catalytic current density, 12.8mAcm(-2). Laccase and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) as the mediator entrapped in the cellulose/polypyrrole composite film generated dioxygen reduction current density of 2mAcm(-2). Application of pseudocapacitive matrix and decreasing the distance between electrodes to 1mm lead to improvement of the biofuel cell power output and its regeneration ability. The power of the cell was found to increase by introduction of a preconditioning step during which the cell was kept at open circuit voltage under fuel flow. After 24h of preconditioning the matrix was recharged and the device output reached the power, 2.1mWcm(-2) and OCV, 0.59V.

The water content of the topsoil is one of the key factors controlling biogeochemical processes, greenhouse gas emissions and biosphere - atmosphere interactions in many ecosystems, particularly in northern peatlands. In these wetland ecosystems, the water content of the photosynthetic active peatmoss layer is crucial for ecosystem functioning and carbon sequestration, and is sensitive to future shifts in rainfall and drought characteristics. Current peatland models differ in the degree in which hydrological feedbacks are included, but how this affects peatmoss drought projections is unknown. The aim of this paper was to systematically test whether the level of hydrological detail in models could bias projections of water content and drought stress for peatmoss in northern peatlands using downscaled projections for rainfall and potential evapotranspiration in the current (1991-2020) and future climate (2061-2090). We considered four model variants that either include or exclude moss (rain)water storage and peat volume change, as these are two central processes in the hydrological self-regulation of peatmoss carpets. Model performance was validated using field data of a peatland in northern Sweden. Including moss water storage as well as peat volume change resulted in a significant improvement of model performance, despite the extra parameters added. The best performance was achieved if both processes were included. Including moss water storage and peat volume change consistently reduced projected peatmoss drought frequency with >50%, relative to the model excluding both processes. Projected peatmoss drought frequency in the growing season was 17% smaller under future climate than current climate, but was unaffected by including the hydrological self-regulating processes. Our results suggest that ignoring these two fine-scale processes important in hydrological self-regulation of northern peatlands will have large consequences for projected climate change impact on ecosystem processes related to topsoil water content, such as greenhouse gas emissions.

Planted forests can contribute to more sustainable practices and help addressing some of these issues. In order to be able to profit from these benefits sustainably, production rates of forest regeneration materials should be higher than the harvesting rates. Nevertheless, intensive production methods often bring along adverse consequences for the environment. At the moment, there exist several options such as greenhouses or plant growth chambers that allow producing forest materials more rapidly. Unfortunately these systems consume considerable high amounts of energy for lighting, acclimatization and irrigation having a negative impact on the environment. The Zephyr project aims to introduce an innovative technology built on pre-cultivation of forest regeneration materials in a zero-impact and cost-friendly production unit. The project will integrate several technologies into a functional and transportable system for large scale production of pre-cultivated forest regeneration materials adapted to transplanting and further growth at forest nurseries. A transportable and closed incubator independent from the outdoor climate provides a better control on the seedlings production. The plants can be produced directly at the place where they are needed avoiding further transportation to the reforestation/afforestation zone. The closed-climate allows seedlings pre-cultivation in places where it would not be possible otherwise (e.g. near deserts). Additionally, it extends the production time throughout the whole year even during the winter. Moreover, it will allow a certified and standardized production of reforestation materials, with a noticeable increasing of the efficiency of the reforestation operations. Specially developed LED growth lamps and wireless sensors will be used to reduce energy consumption and monitor the cultivation process. The main part of the energy will be provided by solar PV-panels, depending from the geographic and climatic area the power system should be able to provide at least one day of autonomy (in central Europe). The energy savings will result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; moreover, since the LED lamps do not produce additional warming, there will be further energy saving through the reduction of air conditioning costs. The PV system is designed based on the load specifications of the different subsystems involved for advanced state-of-art pre-cultivation of forest seedlings. It will be further evaluated based on the changes in the load profiles as the growth protocols for different species are defined. The main objectives are to maximize the power/energy flow delivered to the load and to investigate feasible options for an external backup power source whilst considering options to reduce the overall load of the system.
