Its imbalance result into high energy consumption and heat-losses in the network. In this study, a novel hydraulic model is presented which investigates hydraulic imbalance in the LTDH network, using real weather and hourly monitored operational heating data from an existing boiler based building. Analysis of delta t in space-heating system shows that the delta t is maximum when the outside air temperature is lowest and it decreases with increase in outside air temperature. Furthermore, the hydraulic imbalance is analysed for four different control scenarios with the aim to find an optimum scenario with minimum pumping power, energy consumption and heat-losses in the LTDH network. Results show that the hydraulic imbalance is due to the absence of flow-limiters and balancing valves on the return pipe and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) alone are unable to maintain hydraulic balance in the space-heating system of buildings. Moreover, the control scenario with variable flow-rate and fixed supply water temperature from the sub-station is found to be optimum. Compared to the constant flow-rate scenario, the pumping power, energy consumption and heat-losses in the LTDH network are reduced by approximately 2%, 63% and 14%, respectively.

In this paper, we consider the case of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and we investigate the extent to which an MS-MO reshapes the attribution of responsibility for sustainability in supply chains, especially in relation to underlying power dynamics. We conduct a multimodal critical discourse analysis of a broad range of sources, including videos and interviews. We show that through its discursive strategies, the RSPO allocates the responsibility for social and environmental issues to the two extremes of the supply chain: objectifying consumers at one end and smallholders at the other, hence reproducing and even exacerbating the traditional imbalanced power dynamics in supply chains. Our work contributes to the emerging, more critical strand of research investigating meta-organisations (MOs) and sustainable supply chain management.

This work proposes a quantitative method to characterise the combustion behaviours of individual pulverised coal particles by measuring a set of physical parameters from digital images of the particles. The combustion process of pulverised particles of bituminous coal in a visual drop tube furnace was recorded by a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 6200 frames per second. An improved-Canny algorithm was developed to extract the combustion zones of a coal particle in both the volatile and char combustion phases. Using the improved-Canny and Otsu algorithms, the unburned part of the particle was identified in the volatile combustion phase. Characteristic parameters of coal particles, including the area, brightness, length, width and aspect ratio of volatile flame, and falling velocity, were derived from the processed images. The results obtained show that the volatile and char combustion took place successively and the volatile matter was combusted almost as soon as it was released. The particle travelled upward for around 14 ms during the early stage of combustion due to the influence of devolatilisation and volatile combustion. The particle also exhibited a slight difference in the rotation frequency at different combustion phases.

Further understanding of the biological role of the Ca2+ ion in an aqueous environment requires quantitative measurements of both the short- and long-range interactions experienced by the ion in an aqueous medium. Here, we present experimental measurements of binding energies for water molecules occupying the second and, quite possibly, the third solvation shell surrounding a central Ca2+ ion in [Ca(H2O)n]2+ complexes. Results for these large, previously inaccessible, complexes have come from the application of finite heat bath theory to kinetic energy measurements following unimolecular decay. Even at n = 20, the results show water molecules to be more strongly bound to Ca2+ than would be expected just from the presence of an extended network of hydrogen bonds. For n > 10, there is very good agreement between the experimental binding energies and recently published density functional theory calculations. Comparisons are made with similar data recorded for [Ca(NH3)n]2+ and [Ca(CH3OH)n]2+ complexes. This special issue, which focuses specifically on the notion of ‘pupil voice’, brings together a collection of articles and reports presented and developed as part of the 2004–06 ESRC seminar series ‘Engaging critically with pupil voice’ (RES-451–26–0165). The seminar series brought together representatives reflecting a range of practices and research that can be identified as ‘pupil voice’, with the aim of identifying ‘pupil voice’ activities, delineating key advances, gaps and debates in theory, methodology and ethics. The series helped advance records and forums through which ‘pupil voice’ work is documented and can be further developed. This journal considers cross-disciplinary research and practice which explores the complexities of ‘voice’ in varying contexts and how ‘voice’ can be used in school improvement initiatives.

Turkey is one of the largest markets in the wind energy production sector across the world. With the growing energy demand and for sustainability, the production is increasingly moving towards offshore wind farms. This study briefly reviews the offshore wind farms across the world and evaluates three alternatives for selecting the best site for an offshore wind farm based on 4 main and 15 sub-criteria in the Black Sea region of Turkey. The integrated distance measures and intuitionistic fuzzy sets based on multi-criteria decision-making are employed for that purpose. The ranking for the alternatives results with Inebolu, Amasra, Karasu, repectively in that order from the best to the worst option.

Peatlands are a critical carbon store comprising 30% of the Earth’s terrestrial soil carbon. Sphagnum mosses comprise up to 90% of peat in the northern hemisphere but impacts of climate change on Sphagnum mosses are poorly understood, limiting development of sustainable peatland management and restoration. This study investigates the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) (800 ppm) and hydrology on the growth of Sphagnum fallax, Sphagnum capillifolium and Sphagnum papillosum and greenhouse gas fluxes from moss–peat mesocosms. Elevated CO2 levels increased Sphagnum height and dry weight but the magnitude of the response differed among species. The most responsive species, S. fallax, yielded the most biomass compared to S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Water levels and the CO2 treatment were found to interact, with the highest water level (1 cm below the surface) seeing the largest increase in dry weight under eCO2 compared to ambient (400 ppm) concentrations. Initially, CO2 flux rates were similar between CO2 treatments. After week 9 there was a consistent three-fold increase of the CO2 sink strength under eCO2. At the end of the experiment, S. papillosum and S. fallax were greater sinks of CO2 than S. capillifolium and the − 7 cm water level treatment showed the strongest CO2 sink strength. The mesocosms were net sources of CH4 but the source strength varied with species, specifically S. fallax produced more CH4 than S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Our findings demonstrate the importance of species selection on the outcomes of peatland restoration with regards to Sphagnum’s growth and GHG exchange.

A.; Shao, L.; Riffat, S. B.;The impact of ceiling geometries on the performance of lightshelves was investigated using physical model experiments and radiance simulations. Illuminance level and distribution uniformity were assessed for a working plane in a large space located in sub-tropical climate regions where innovative systems for daylighting and shading are required. It was found that the performance of the lightshelf can be improved by changing the ceiling geometry; the illuminance level increased in the rear of the room and decreased in the front near the window compared to rooms having conventional horizontal ceilings. Moreover, greater uniformity was achieved throughout the room as a result of reducing the difference in the illuminance level between the front and rear of the room. Radiance simulation results were found to be in good agreement with physical model data obtained under a clear sky and high solar radiation. The best ceiling shape was found to be one that is curved in the front and rear of the room.

Its imbalance result into high energy consumption and heat-losses in the network. In this study, a novel hydraulic model is presented which investigates hydraulic imbalance in the LTDH network, using real weather and hourly monitored operational heating data from an existing boiler based building. Analysis of delta t in space-heating system shows that the delta t is maximum when the outside air temperature is lowest and it decreases with increase in outside air temperature. Furthermore, the hydraulic imbalance is analysed for four different control scenarios with the aim to find an optimum scenario with minimum pumping power, energy consumption and heat-losses in the LTDH network. Results show that the hydraulic imbalance is due to the absence of flow-limiters and balancing valves on the return pipe and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) alone are unable to maintain hydraulic balance in the space-heating system of buildings. Moreover, the control scenario with variable flow-rate and fixed supply water temperature from the sub-station is found to be optimum. Compared to the constant flow-rate scenario, the pumping power, energy consumption and heat-losses in the LTDH network are reduced by approximately 2%, 63% and 14%, respectively.

In this paper, we consider the case of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and we investigate the extent to which an MS-MO reshapes the attribution of responsibility for sustainability in supply chains, especially in relation to underlying power dynamics. We conduct a multimodal critical discourse analysis of a broad range of sources, including videos and interviews. We show that through its discursive strategies, the RSPO allocates the responsibility for social and environmental issues to the two extremes of the supply chain: objectifying consumers at one end and smallholders at the other, hence reproducing and even exacerbating the traditional imbalanced power dynamics in supply chains. Our work contributes to the emerging, more critical strand of research investigating meta-organisations (MOs) and sustainable supply chain management.

This work proposes a quantitative method to characterise the combustion behaviours of individual pulverised coal particles by measuring a set of physical parameters from digital images of the particles. The combustion process of pulverised particles of bituminous coal in a visual drop tube furnace was recorded by a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 6200 frames per second. An improved-Canny algorithm was developed to extract the combustion zones of a coal particle in both the volatile and char combustion phases. Using the improved-Canny and Otsu algorithms, the unburned part of the particle was identified in the volatile combustion phase. Characteristic parameters of coal particles, including the area, brightness, length, width and aspect ratio of volatile flame, and falling velocity, were derived from the processed images. The results obtained show that the volatile and char combustion took place successively and the volatile matter was combusted almost as soon as it was released. The particle travelled upward for around 14 ms during the early stage of combustion due to the influence of devolatilisation and volatile combustion. The particle also exhibited a slight difference in the rotation frequency at different combustion phases.

Further understanding of the biological role of the Ca2+ ion in an aqueous environment requires quantitative measurements of both the short- and long-range interactions experienced by the ion in an aqueous medium. Here, we present experimental measurements of binding energies for water molecules occupying the second and, quite possibly, the third solvation shell surrounding a central Ca2+ ion in [Ca(H2O)n]2+ complexes. Results for these large, previously inaccessible, complexes have come from the application of finite heat bath theory to kinetic energy measurements following unimolecular decay. Even at n = 20, the results show water molecules to be more strongly bound to Ca2+ than would be expected just from the presence of an extended network of hydrogen bonds. For n > 10, there is very good agreement between the experimental binding energies and recently published density functional theory calculations. Comparisons are made with similar data recorded for [Ca(NH3)n]2+ and [Ca(CH3OH)n]2+ complexes. The seminar series brought together representatives reflecting a range of practices and research that can be identified as ‘pupil voice’, with the aim of identifying ‘pupil voice’ activities, delineating key advances, gaps and debates in theory, methodology and ethics. The series helped advance records and forums through which ‘pupil voice’ work is documented and can be further developed. This journal considers cross-disciplinary research and practice which explores the complexities of ‘voice’ in varying contexts and how ‘voice’ can be used in school improvement initiatives.

Turkey is one of the largest markets in the wind energy production sector across the world. With the growing energy demand and for sustainability, the production is increasingly moving towards offshore wind farms. This study briefly reviews the offshore wind farms across the world and evaluates three alternatives for selecting the best site for an offshore wind farm based on 4 main and 15 sub-criteria in the Black Sea region of Turkey. The integrated distance measures and intuitionistic fuzzy sets based on multi-criteria decision-making are employed for that purpose. The ranking for the alternatives results with Inebolu, Amasra, Karasu, repectively in that order from the best to the worst option.

Peatlands are a critical carbon store comprising 30% of the Earth’s terrestrial soil carbon. Sphagnum mosses comprise up to 90% of peat in the northern hemisphere but impacts of climate change on Sphagnum mosses are poorly understood, limiting development of sustainable peatland management and restoration. This study investigates the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) (800 ppm) and hydrology on the growth of Sphagnum fallax, Sphagnum capillifolium and Sphagnum papillosum and greenhouse gas fluxes from moss–peat mesocosms. Elevated CO2 levels increased Sphagnum height and dry weight but the magnitude of the response differed among species. The most responsive species, S. fallax, yielded the most biomass compared to S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Water levels and the CO2 treatment were found to interact, with the highest water level (1 cm below the surface) seeing the largest increase in dry weight under eCO2 compared to ambient (400 ppm) concentrations. Initially, CO2 flux rates were similar between CO2 treatments. After week 9 there was a consistent three-fold increase of the CO2 sink strength under eCO2. At the end of the experiment, S. papillosum and S. fallax were greater sinks of CO2 than S. capillifolium and the − 7 cm water level treatment showed the strongest CO2 sink strength. The mesocosms were net sources of CH4 but the source strength varied with species, specifically S. fallax produced more CH4 than S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Our findings demonstrate the importance of species selection on the outcomes of peatland restoration with regards to Sphagnum’s growth and GHG exchange.

A.; Shao, L.; Riffat, S. B.;The impact of ceiling geometries on the performance of lightshelves was investigated using physical model experiments and radiance simulations. Illuminance level and distribution uniformity were assessed for a working plane in a large space located in sub-tropical climate regions where innovative systems for daylighting and shading are required. It was found that the performance of the lightshelf can be improved by changing the ceiling geometry; the illuminance level increased in the rear of the room and decreased in the front near the window compared to rooms having conventional horizontal ceilings. Moreover, greater uniformity was achieved throughout the room as a result of reducing the difference in the illuminance level between the front and rear of the room. Radiance simulation results were found to be in good agreement with physical model data obtained under a clear sky and high solar radiation. The best ceiling shape was found to be one that is curved in the front and rear of the room.
