This master thesis studies the application of a static cross hedge when hedging ethanol. The case studied has been provided by Lantmännen Agroetanol, operator of the largest ethanol plant in Sweden. The plant produce ethanol from grain and the capacity is currently being expanded by 300 percent. Changes in the price of both grain and ethanol have been dramatic during 2007, with a decrease in the price of ethanol and a sharp increase in the price of wheat. These changes both have a negative impact on the operations of Agroetanol and this thesis look to hedging with futures as a method to lessen the exposure to price changes. Using future contracts derived on sugar prices we conclude that Agroetanol can decrease its market risk. An analysis of the methods for measuring financial risks at Lantmännen concludes that the use of Expected Shortfall, a measurement derived from Value at Risk, have a number of advantages. We therefore recommend that this measure is implemented throughout the corporation providing a consistent measure of financial risks. This enables every part of the organization to be analyzed based on its contribution to the total risk exposure. Finally the method used in the thesis can be used in a number of situations and the difficulties observed at Agroetanol are by no means unique. We hope that this study can provide an example for studies that aim to solve similar difficulties.

Emergy analysis is a scientific and robust method to assess the degree of sustainability of human as well as natural systems. Despite the advantages of the method, its public breakthrough has been slow. One reason could be that the results of an emergy analysis are difficult to grasp. In contrast, ecological footprint is a concept that has a widespread impact, much due to its pedagogical disposition. Ecological footprint made use of the vision to develop a method to well communicate the magnitude of human effect on nature. Another more recently created method suitable in this context is ecosystem services. Ecosystem services as a concept is not yet so well developed methodologically, but its use of mainstream concepts point toward a promising application. The main purpose of this study is to make the emergy analysis and ecosystem services methods more accessible and also to facilitate effective communication of the results from these methods. The second part of the study aims to assess the degree of sustainability ofan agricultural system in central Sweden by means of emergy analysis and ecosystems services. By demonstrating the results of the emergy analysis as a foot- and fingerprint, a better understanding of the outcome may be achieved. The footprint, here called emergy-based footprint, visualizes all resources used in the production system. An emergy-based fingerprint identifies the resources of the most important items in the system. Furthermore, ecosystem services are evaluated from a data matrix and presented by means of a radar diagram. Alternative scenarios for the agricultural system were created in the study, each presented as an emergy-based foot- and fingerprint, as well as by means of a radar diagram to visualize the values of the ecosystem services. Together, these methods demonstrate the sustainability characteristics of the different production systems. Results from this study suggest the agricultural system analysed, as well as the developed scenarios, not to be sustainable. The use of emergy analysis combined with ecosystem services and the visualization methods developed in this study, serve to provide accessible and effective communication methods when aiming to transform agricultural systems towards sustainability. The communication methods developed in this study are alsoapplicable in systems other than agriculture.

This thesis investigates consumer willingness to pay for sustainable buildings, focusing on different demographic groups and the factors influencing their decisions. The study aims to assist construction companies in evaluating the economic feasibility of incorporating sustainable practices into their projects. Utilizing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, the research includes quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from expert interviews. Key findings reveal that while sustainability is not the primary driver in housing purchases, there is a significant willingness to pay for enhanced energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. This willingness varies across demographics, with younger generations and women showing higher inclinations towards sustainable investments. The study also highlights the phenomenon of "hypothetical bias," where expressed willingness to pay in surveys exceeds actual willingness in real-life scenarios. The results suggest that integrating sustainable solutions can be economically viable for construction companies, provided these solutions offer clear economic benefits to consumers. Future research should explore the long-term trends in consumer preferences and the impact of various incentives on promoting sustainable housing

Jernhusen AB is a real estate company within the transportation industry and their business is focused towards the railway. Jernhusen has a stated goal that the company should contribute to a sustainable society. As a step in this goal the company explores the possibilities of investing in locally produced renewable energy systems at their maintenance depots. This report investigates the potential in that kind of investment. There are currently several different renewable energy sources that can be used for locally producing renewable energy at the depots. The most appropriate techniques for Jernhusen to use are solar energy and geothermal energy. Solar energy can be used to produce electric power with solar cells and to produce heat with solar panels. There are several different types of solar cells but the most commonly used are polycrystalline silicon based solar cells. The maintenance depots have large power requirements for both electricity and heat. The power demand is greatest during the winter months when the train needs de-icing. The maintenance depots have large open roofs and rail yards suitable for solar cells, solar panels and geothermal systems. Most of the depots are old constructions and the properties contains a lot of soil pollution that need to be considered if a geothermal energy solution is up for investigation. There are good prospects for Jernhusen to install various systems using renewable energy sources. If a solar cell system were installed at Hagalund according to Table 6-1 the payback period for the investment is 15.1 years. This must be seen as a good investment when the solar cells have a lifespan of 40 years. If a geothermal system were installed at Raus according to Table 6-3 the payback period is 17.2 years. A solar panel system has a low profitability regardless of which depot the system is installed at. However, both the geothermal system and the solar panel system are far more profitable if the building is heated by electricity.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2011 SwedenPublisher:Uppsala universitet, Kulturgeografiska institutionen Authors: Levin, Anna;Tools that highlight the human impact on ecosystems and the accelerating depletion of natural resources are essential in the strife towards a more sustainable way of living.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Bachelor thesis 2024 SwedenPublisher:KTH, Industriell ekonomi och organisation (Inst.) This thesis investigates consumer willingness to pay for sustainable buildings, focusing on different demographic groups and the factors influencing their decisions.

European Solar Engineering School ESES was originally intended to be established on the Italian island of Capri, but began as a Master Program at Dalarna University at the beginning of the fall semester 1999. ESES attracts students from all over the world and has today a reputation of one of the world's best educations in its field. My own role was to initiate SERC and ESES and being instrumental in their respective first years of development, while their continued growth has depended highly on my former colleagues, still active at Dalarna University.
