Roland Einhaus in OpenAIREAbstract An experimental study on the surface texturisation of monocrystalline wafers with solutions containing sodium-hydroxide and isopropanol was carried out. Both the composition and the temperature of the etching solution were optimised on the basis of etch-rate measurements on silicon samples having different crystallographic directions. It was found that the density and the size of the pyramids are influenced by the etch-rate of silicon in the 〈1 0 0〉 direction and also by the anisotropy factor of the solutions being the quotient of the etch rate in the 〈1 0 0〉 to 〈1 1 1〉 directions. Design of experiments and response surface methods were used to extract the etch rate as a function of different input parameters, such as the sodium hydroxide and isopropanol concentrations and the temperatures of the solutions. Optimum texturing conditions were found at a temperature of 80°C and a composition which causes a relatively high etch rate in the 〈1 0 0〉 direction with an anisotropy factor of 10. At the starting point of the etching process, the inhomogeneity of pyramid nucleation can be avoided by mixing an additive to the texturing solution. With such a solution, the pyramid size can be tuned by varying the etching time in order to obtain a low reflectivity from the textured silicon wafers. Based on our results the texturing process could be stabilised with respect to the reproducibility on a large scale of wafers.

Feedback of operating experience has always been an important issue in the nuclear industry. A probabilistic safety analysis (PSA) can be used as a tool to analyse how an operational event might have developed adversely in order to obtain a quantitative assessment of the safety significance of the event. This process is called PSA-based event analysis (PSAEA). A comprehensive set of PSAEA guidelines was developed by an international project. The main characteristics of this methodology are summarised. This approach to analyse incidents can be used to meet different objectives of utilities or nuclear regulators. The paper describes the main objectives and the experiences of the Belgian nuclear regulatory organisation AVN with the application of PSA-based event analysis. Some interesting aspects of the process of PSAEA are further developed and underlined. Several case studies are discussed and an overview of the obtained results is given. Finally, the interest of a broad and interactive forum on PSAEA is highlighted.

ABC-X has recently been proposed and it has initially been tested on different benchmark functions sets, showing very good results when compared to known ABC algorithms. However, it has never been used in an industrial application. In this case study on a real-world problem, the performance of ABC-X for the economic power dispatch problem (EPDP) with valve point effects is investigated. The algorithm's performance is tested on four instances of different size and compared with the performance of other algorithms that have been proposed earlier for this problem. The results obtained show that ABC-X can successfully solve the EPDP with valve point effects.

The decision whether or not to install small cogeneration for residential purposes mainly depends on individual economic considerations, combined with ecological awareness. Since in most cases, the economic balance is still unfavourable, government grants are considered in order to bridge this economic barrier. It is however still unclear how these grants are best spent to obtain an optimal environmental benefit. In the case of cogeneration, mainly static and simplified methods are used, completely neglecting the dynamic interaction between the cogeneration systems and the central power system and the dynamic response of the cogeneration units themselves. In this paper, these issues are discussed in two parts. The first part clarifies how an actual cogeneration unit, if necessary in combination with a back-up boiler and heat storage, will respond to a certain demand. For this purpose, experiments were performed to establish the transient and stationary behaviour of the system. It is shown that the transient heating of the cogeneration engine is rather slow (e.g. half an hour after cold start, the engine only produced 65% of the heat it would have in stationary regime) where the electric transient behaviour is negligible. In the second part of the paper, dynamic simulations are performed to quantify the impact (primary energy saving and reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions) of the massive installation of cogeneration for residential heating. Two important parameters are isolated. First, the interaction with the expansion of the central power system is very important. If the installation of cogeneration prevents the commissioning of new power plants, the potential energy saving and (especially) emission reduction are reduced. The second parameter is the annual use of the cogeneration units. Here, the potential energy saving and emission reduction increase with increasing annual use. The size of these cities combined with the high growth rates provides substantial sustainability challenges. Urban freight transport (UFT) contributes to these challenges. Despite its relatively low share as part of total traffic, the negative impact of UFT is disproportionate. Improving the sustainability in this context is inevitable in the light of further prospected urbanization. To study this topic, a theoretical framework is developed which is subsequently applied on literature. This allows characterizing the UFT system in a city. Such a framework is currently lacking. The framework is developed around the components of a UFT system (demand, supply and context) and the factors influencing these components. Factors include the different supply chains (demand), vehicles used (supply) and traffic measures (context). It is applied to analyze the UFT system in megacities in emerging markets. Results show that demand in different supply chains is fragmented as well as the transport. Uncontrolled sprawl and the existence of an informal economy further contribute to the complexity to regulate UFT. Based hereupon, we discuss efforts to move to more sustainable UFT in this context.
