The concept and a new method for the shielded development of bottom gas hydrates have been proposed, the technological phases and constructive elements of their implementation have been substantiated. The research provides for the realization of the idea suggesting the simultaneous dissociation of the vast areas of a gas hydrate deposit, management of the targeted process of the penetration of methane recovered from gas hydrates into water space and its accumulation under the extensive gas-collecting shield wherefrom it is removed by bottom pipe transportation facilities. To do hydraulic fracturing, a well is drilled into the plane of the junction of the surface of a gas hydrate deposit and the rocks of a roof, the open system of fissures in the rocks of a roof is made through which produced gas is released to a gas-collecting blanket in a water.

From the early days of philosophy, ethics and justice, there is wide consensus that the constancy of the laws establishes the legal system. On the other hand, the rate at which we accumulate knowledge is gaining speed like never before. Due to the recently increased attention of academics to climate change and other environmental issues, a lot of new knowledge has been obtained about carbon management, its role in nature and mechanisms regarding the formation and degradation of organic matter. A multidisciplinary techno-economic assessment of current composting standards and laws that took into account the current state of knowledge about carbon management was carried out as a case study. Economic and environmental damage caused by outdated laws was revealed. In addition, it was found that the introduction of the best composts into the market is permitted, causing additional negative environmental as well as economic impacts.

Abstract In electrical engineering, the heat transfer can be enhanced by changing the thermophysical properties of insulating oils. In this paper, a single-phase power transformer with a nominal power of 5 kVA is subjected to a temperature rise test with three different transformer liquids. The first test is carried out with a novel gas-to-liquid transformer oil applied as a cooling and insulating medium. The other tests are conducted with ferrofluids based on this oil and MnZn ferrite nanoparticles of a low and a high nanoparticle concentration. The ferrofluids are characterized by magnetization curves, magnetic susceptibility and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements. The nanoparticle size distribution is determined from dynamic light scattering and the magnetization data. From the temperature rise profiles of the transformer at various inner locations, it has been found that the low-concentrated ferrofluid significantly reduces the transformer temperature rise. The enhanced cooling performance is ascribed to the thermomagnetic and natural convection, and increased thermal conductivity. The application of the ferrofluid with the high nanoparticle concentration resulted in a remarkable increase of the transformer temperature rise. The deteriorative cooling effect is attributed to the hindered natural and thermomagnetic convection due to the high ferrofluid magnetization and strong magnetic interaction of the ferrofluid with the magnetic field near the transformer core.

The goal of this theoretical study is to illustrate the potential of three different MgB2 tapes, developed by Columbus Superconductors, for application in cylindrical coils. First, the distribution of critical currents and electric fields of individual turns is compared when the winding of the model coil is made with tapes having different Ic(B) and anisotropy values. Second, the influence of the winding geometry on basic parameters of cylindrical coils which consist of a set of pancake coils, such as critical current Icmin, central magnetic field B0 and stored energy E, is analysed. The winding geometry of the coils, i.e. the outer winding radius and the coil length, with the same inner winding radius, was changed from a disc shape to a long thin solenoid in such a way that the overall tape length was held constant, and considered as a parameter. Finally, the winding cross-section of the coil is optimized with respect to the constant tape length in order to reach the maximum central field. The results of calculations show that for a given overall tape length and inner winding radius there exists only one winding geometry which generates the maximum central field. The overall tape length, as a parameter, is changed in a broad range from 500 m to 10 km. All calculations were performed using the experimental data measured at 20 K while the effect of the anisotropy in the Ic(B) characteristic of the short samples is taken into account.

In this paper Multistage Switched Inductor Boost Converter (Multistage SIBC) is uttered for renewable energy applications. The projected converter is derived from an amalgamation of the conventional step-up converter and inductor stack. The number of inductor and duty ratio decides the overall voltage gain of the projected converter. The projected converter consists of only one controlled power semiconductor device. The 50 KHz frequency is adopted to reduce the L, C value and to suppress the output waveform ripples. The analysis and working of projected converter is discussed in detail. Simulation of the projected converter for three stages is done in Matlab/Simulink (version-2016) and the results are verified with theoretical values.

Abstract Requirements for industrial work conditions are determined by human occupancy, building construction and production processes and they should ensure the prevention and removal of heat and noxious substances from the working space. Till now costly and time-consuming experimental methods in existing buildings and fast but less reliable simulation methods at the design stage were used, which both treat the human factor as minor. In the present study we propose a user-centered methodology which combined the versatility of the thermo-physiological modeling and the reliability of in-situ measurements based on an example of a typical industrial hall. Based on the results we observed insufficient operative temperature for winter and summer months due to the missing HVAC system in the hall. As a consequence, sweat excretion, thermal sensation and skin wettedness exceeded their limits for physiological strain and thermal comfort during the summer months, and skin temperature decreased distinctly at the face and hands but was still above the limit for pain or non-freezing cold injury in the winter months. This methodology can be used for a wide range of thermal environments, activities and clothing. It eliminates the need for the exposure of human beings and provides information on physiological data, which are difficult or impractical to measure in a field study (e.g. sweat excretion, skin and core temperatures, thermal sensation). The methodology can be useful to reveal zones with distractive effect or are inappropriate for human exposition. Finally, this approach also allows using a single method and providing continuous output information for a variety of environments without needing to change approach and type of output data.

After unilateral entorhinal cortex lesions, acute ethanol exposure (mean daily intake = 16.3 +/- 0.3 g/kg for 15 days) of juvenile rats failed to alter lesion-induced axonal sprouting in the dentate gyrus. The distribution of acetylcholinesterase in the dentate gyrus was identified histochemically as an indicator of axonal sprouting. Comparisons between operated and intact sides were based on qualitative observations and quantitative morphometry techniques using a computerized image analyser to evaluate the widths of the bands of the molecular layer. Whether ethanol-exposed or not, rats with unilateral entorhinal cortex lesions exhibited substantial qualitative and quantitative evidence of axonal sprouting. These results indicate that a 15-day post-operative ethanol exposure had no effect on axonal sprouting in juvenile rats and thus qualify previous findings about ethanol-mediated effects on axonal sprouting.

Different conditions (water level, oxygen supply) prevailing in both beds of the Kodijärve double-bed horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetland (CW) (Southern Estonia; constructed in 1996, total area 312.5 m(2), 40 pe) provide the opportunity to compare how different operational methods have altered the efficiency of the purification processes inside the HSSF CW. In summer 2002 a vertical subsurface flow (VSSF) CW (total area 37.4 m(2)) was added as the first stage of the system. Data from 18 sampling wells installed in Kodijärve HSSF CW from two periods is compared: 1st period -- January 2000-April 2002 (before the VSSF CW was built); 2nd period --October 2002-December 2004 (after the construction of the VSSF filter). The VSSF CW has remarkably improved aerobic conditions in both beds of the HSSF. Apart from total phosphorus concentrations in the right bed and nitrate nitrogen concentrations in the outflow of both beds, all of the water quality indicators (dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, biological oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total nitrogen and total iron) improved after the construction of the VSSF filter. Typically, purification processes in the HSSF CW were dependent on oxygen supply, which was partly influenced by the water level inside the filter beds.

Comprehensive understanding of the catalyst corrosion dynamics is a prerequisite for the development of an efficient cathode catalyst in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. To reach this aim, the behavior of fuel cell catalysts must be investigated directly under reaction conditions. Herein, we applied a strategic combination of in situ/online techniques: in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy, in situ grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering, and electrochemical scanning flow cell with online detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This combination of techniques allows in-depth investigation of the potential-dependent surface restructuring of a PtNi model thin film catalyst during potentiodynamic cycling in an aqueous acidic electrolyte. The study reveals a clear correlation between the upper potential limit and structural behavior of the PtNi catalyst, namely, its dealloying and coarsening. The results show that at 0.6 and 1.0 VRHE upper potentials, the PtNi catalyst essentially preserves its structure during the entire cycling procedure. The crucial changes in the morphology of PtNi layers are found to occur at 1.3 and 1.5 VRHE cycling potentials. Strong dealloying at the early stage of cycling is substituted with strong coarsening of catalyst particles at the later stage. The coarsening at the later stage of cycling is assigned to the electrochemical Ostwald ripening process.
