We have characterized the general properties of the heat shock response of the Gram-positive hardy bacterium Enterococcus faecalis. The heat resistance (60 degrees C or 62.5 degrees C, 30 min) of log phase cells of E. faecalis grown at 37 degrees C was enhanced by exposing cells to a prior heat shock at 45 degrees C or 50 degrees C for 30 min. These conditioning temperatures also induced ethanol (22%, v/v) tolerance. The onset of thermotolerance was accompanied by the synthesis of a number of heat shock proteins. The most prominent bands had molecular weights in the range of 48 to 94kDa. By Western blot analysis two of them were found to be immunologically related to the well known DnaK (72kDa) and GroEL (63kDa) heat shock proteins of Escherichia coli. Four other proteins showing little or no variations after exposure to heat are related to DnaJ, GrpE and Lon (La) E. coli proteins and to the Bacillus subtilis sigma 43 factor. Ethanol (2% or 4%, v/v) treatments elicited a similar response although there was a weaker induction of heat shock proteins than with heat shock.

The power block unit in the cycle, as mentioned above designed to produce 160 MWe in the Ouarzazate region, where a gigantic solar project conducted in Morocco with a design point DNI evaluated as 823 W/m2. So, the aim to compare the performance of the s-ethane against the s-CO2, operating in the secondary cycle, two critical parameters studied are, the first one is the effect of turbine inlet temperature on net power. And the second one is the effect of secondary Brayton cycle pressure on the system efficiency. The cycle efficiency, founded to be 58% at high turbine inlet temperature by including an aided s-ethane cycle. The research work is in progress. In perspectives, specific other possible configurations and other trans-critical fluids will address in the secondary Brayton cycle.

Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and pig manure (PM) was undertaken in batch mode at 37°C in order to identify and quantify the synergistic effects of co-digestion on the specific methane yield (SMY) and reaction kinetics. The effects of the high initial volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in PM on synergy observed during co-digestion, and on kinetic modelling were investigated. PM to FW mixing ratios of 1/0, 4/1, 3/2, 2/3, 1/4 and 0/1 (VS basis) were examined. No VFA or ammonia inhibition was observed. The highest SMY of 521±29ml CH4/gVS was achieved at a PM/FW mixing ratio of 1/4. Synergy in terms of both reaction kinetics and SMY occurred at PM/FW mixing ratios of 3/2, 2/3 and 1/4. Initial VFA concentrations did not explain the synergy observed. Throughout the study the conversion of butyric acid was inhibited. Due to the high initial VFA content of PM, conventional first order and Gompertz models were inappropriate for determining reaction kinetics. A dual pooled first order model was found to provide the best fit for the data generated in this study. The optimal mixing ratio in terms of both reaction kinetics and SMY was found at a PM/FW mixing ratio of 1/4.

This is more apparent in distribution systems with the integration of renewable energy sources, energy storage, and microgrid development. Utilities are also focusing on the reliability and resiliency of the grid. These activities require distribution automation (DA) strategies that take advantage of available technologies while promoting newer solutions. It is necessary to create a roadmap for holistic DA strategies in a smarter grid. Sustainable and resilient grid development is a paradigm shift requiring a new line of thinking in the engineering, operation, and maintenance of the power system. International perspectives on DA are also addressed, with the understanding that one solution will not fit all. Integrating technical, business, and policy decisions into the challenges will generate the development of technologies, standards, and implementation of the overall solution. The challenges in the development of industry standards are also discussed. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities in the changing landscape of the distribution systems. Evolution of technologies and the business case for infrastructure investment in distribution systems are covered in another paper by the same authors.

AbstractActivation of potassium (K+) currents plays a critical role in the control of programmed cell death. Because pituitary adenylate cyclase‐activating polypeptide (PACAP) has been shown to inhibit the apoptotic cascade in the cerebellar cortex during development, we have investigated the effect of PACAP on K+ currents in cultured cerebellar granule cells using the patch‐clamp technique in the whole‐cell configuration. Two types of outward K+ currents, a transient K+ current (IA) and a delayed rectifier K+ current (IK) were characterized using two different voltage protocols and specific inhibitors of K+ channels. Application of PACAP induced a reversible reduction of the IK amplitude, but did not affect IA, while the PACAP‐related peptide vasoactive intestinal polypeptide had no effect on either types of K+ currents. Repeated applications of PACAP induced gradual attenuation of the electrophysiological response. In the presence of guanosine 5′‐[γthio]triphosphate (GTPγS), PACAP provoked a marked and irreversible IK depression, whereas cell dialysis with guanosine 5′‐[βthio]diphosphate GDPβS totally abolished the effect of PACAP. Pre‐treatment of the cells with pertussis toxin did not modify the effect of PACAP on IK. In contrast, cholera toxin suppressed the PACAP‐induced inhibition of IK. Exposure of granule cells to dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP) mimicked the inhibitory effect of PACAP on IK. Addition of the specific protein kinase A inhibitor H89 in the patch pipette solution prevented the reduction of IK induced by both PACAP and dbcAMP. PACAP provoked a sustained increase of the resting membrane potential in cerebellar granule cells cultured either in high or low KCl‐containing medium, and this long‐term depolarizing effect of PACAP was mimicked by the IK specific blocker tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA). In addition, pre‐incubation of granule cells with TEA suppressed the effect of PACAP on resting membrane potential. TEA mimicked the neuroprotective effect of PACAP against ethanol‐induced apoptotic cell death, and the increase of caspase‐3 activity observed after exposure of granule cells to ethanol was also significantly inhibited by TEA. Taken together, the present results demonstrate that, in rat cerebellar granule cells, PACAP reduces the delayed outward rectifier K+ current by activating a type 1 PACAP (PAC1) receptor coupled to the adenylyl cyclase/protein kinase A pathway through a cholera toxin‐sensitive Gs protein. Our data also show that PACAP and TEA induce long‐term depolarization of the resting membrane potential, promote cell survival and inhibit caspase‐3 activity, suggesting that PACAP‐evoked inhibition of IK contributes to the anti‐apoptotic effect of the peptide on cerebellar granule cells.

The analysis shows that: (1) the Money Manager category perfectly played the oil bubble, got in early and started selling shortly before the bubble peak; (2) the Producer/Merchant/Processor/User category and the Nonreportable category were covering their short positions into the peak of the bubble; (3) the Swap/Dealer category benefited while the price of oil was rising, but incurred heavy losses as the price of oil collapsed; (4) we find no indications of speculation by any group of traders via the positive feedback trading or rational destabilization; and (5) we do, however, criticize the commercial hedgers for failing to arbitrage the soaring oil prices in 2008.

Distribution maps of pollutants over the cell allowed to identify their sources. Besides chromium and silicon, sulfur was found as a major pollutant species. Its preferential reaction with strontium doped lanthanum cobaltite (LSC), forming strontium sulfate SrSO4, compared to strontium doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) is revealed here. When sulfur poisoning arises in combination with chromium, a sulfur-containing strontium chromate compound is formed.

The alumina particles with different sizes play different roles. The microalumina mainly enhances the thermal stability of the polyolefin separator and provides large channels for lithium‐ion diffusion. The nanoalumina particles are helpful in improving the lithium‐ion transference number by increasing the contact interface area of electrolyte/alumina. The lithium‐ion transference number of the separators with different coatings increases from 0.32 to 0.40, mainly due to the ratio of micro/nanoalumina particles. Meanwhile, ion conductivity increases from 0.30 to 0.40 mS cm−1. As a result, the cycling stability of the lithium metal anode is greatly improved by the synergetic effect of microsized alumina particles and nanosized alumina particles.

AbstractThe aim of this article is to investigate the performances of an indirect temperature swing adsorption process for CO2 removal from nitrogen using 13X zeolite. Breakthrough experiment, with a 10% CO2–N2 mixture, were performed showing that thanks to the cooling, the adsorbent capacity is preserved and close to that of an isothermal adsorption. For the desorption step, CO2 at a concentration of nearly 100% is recovered thanks to the indirect heating and the non‐use of purge gas. During the cycle experiments, we obtained 7.9 MJ/kg for the specific heat consumption. This value is slightly higher than amine absorption ones, which is the reference process for CO2 capture. However, it has to be taken into account that there is a good potential of energy saving because our process configuration (adsorbent choice, number of beds, step duration, etc.) has not been optimized yet. Moreover, in scaled‐up process, the heat losses are of less importance, which will decrease the specific heat consumption. Kleindorfer;Abstract Batteries are responsible for the major share of costs of electric vehicles (EVs). However, they are idle most of the time during vehicle use and expected to retain a significant capacity when discarded from vehicle use. As a result, they may provide an additional value during and after their vehicle life, helping to reduce their total costs of ownership. We use a dynamic model to evaluate three competing approaches of using EV batteries for grid applications. These are (1) batteries installed in EVs, also known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G), as well as (2) used and (3) new batteries installed in stationary energy storage systems (ESS), which we refer to as battery-to-grid (B2G). We find that none of the approaches is likely to be implemented on a large scale as the anticipated revenues barely (if at all) offset the additional costs incurred by the corresponding applications.

Four other proteins showing little or no variations after exposure to heat are related to DnaJ, GrpE and Lon (La) E. coli proteins and to the Bacillus subtilis sigma 43 factor. Ethanol (2% or 4%, v/v) treatments elicited a similar response although there was a weaker induction of heat shock proteins than with heat shock.

The power block unit in the cycle, as mentioned above designed to produce 160 MWe in the Ouarzazate region, where a gigantic solar project conducted in Morocco with a design point DNI evaluated as 823 W/m2. So, the aim to compare the performance of the s-ethane against the s-CO2, operating in the secondary cycle, two critical parameters studied are, the first one is the effect of turbine inlet temperature on net power. And the second one is the effect of secondary Brayton cycle pressure on the system efficiency. The cycle efficiency, founded to be 58% at high turbine inlet temperature by including an aided s-ethane cycle. The research work is in progress. In perspectives, specific other possible configurations and other trans-critical fluids will address in the secondary Brayton cycle.

Anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and pig manure (PM) was undertaken in batch mode at 37°C in order to identify and quantify the synergistic effects of co-digestion on the specific methane yield (SMY) and reaction kinetics. The effects of the high initial volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in PM on synergy observed during co-digestion, and on kinetic modelling were investigated. PM to FW mixing ratios of 1/0, 4/1, 3/2, 2/3, 1/4 and 0/1 (VS basis) were examined. No VFA or ammonia inhibition was observed. The highest SMY of 521±29ml CH4/gVS was achieved at a PM/FW mixing ratio of 1/4. Synergy in terms of both reaction kinetics and SMY occurred at PM/FW mixing ratios of 3/2, 2/3 and 1/4. Initial VFA concentrations did not explain the synergy observed. Throughout the study the conversion of butyric acid was inhibited. Due to the high initial VFA content of PM, conventional first order and Gompertz models were inappropriate for determining reaction kinetics. A dual pooled first order model was found to provide the best fit for the data generated in this study. The optimal mixing ratio in terms of both reaction kinetics and SMY was found at a PM/FW mixing ratio of 1/4.

This is more apparent in distribution systems with the integration of renewable energy sources, energy storage, and microgrid development. Utilities are also focusing on the reliability and resiliency of the grid. These activities require distribution automation (DA) strategies that take advantage of available technologies while promoting newer solutions. It is necessary to create a roadmap for holistic DA strategies in a smarter grid. Sustainable and resilient grid development is a paradigm shift requiring a new line of thinking in the engineering, operation, and maintenance of the power system. International perspectives on DA are also addressed, with the understanding that one solution will not fit all. Integrating technical, business, and policy decisions into the challenges will generate the development of technologies, standards, and implementation of the overall solution. The challenges in the development of industry standards are also discussed. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities in the changing landscape of the distribution systems. Evolution of technologies and the business case for infrastructure investment in distribution systems are covered in another paper by the same authors.

AbstractActivation of potassium (K+) currents plays a critical role in the control of programmed cell death. Because pituitary adenylate cyclase‐activating polypeptide (PACAP) has been shown to inhibit the apoptotic cascade in the cerebellar cortex during development, we have investigated the effect of PACAP on K+ currents in cultured cerebellar granule cells using the patch‐clamp technique in the whole‐cell configuration. Two types of outward K+ currents, a transient K+ current (IA) and a delayed rectifier K+ current (IK) were characterized using two different voltage protocols and specific inhibitors of K+ channels. Application of PACAP induced a reversible reduction of the IK amplitude, but did not affect IA, while the PACAP‐related peptide vasoactive intestinal polypeptide had no effect on either types of K+ currents. Repeated applications of PACAP induced gradual attenuation of the electrophysiological response. In the presence of guanosine 5′‐[γthio]triphosphate (GTPγS), PACAP provoked a marked and irreversible IK depression, whereas cell dialysis with guanosine 5′‐[βthio]diphosphate GDPβS totally abolished the effect of PACAP. Pre‐treatment of the cells with pertussis toxin did not modify the effect of PACAP on IK. In contrast, cholera toxin suppressed the PACAP‐induced inhibition of IK. Exposure of granule cells to dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP) mimicked the inhibitory effect of PACAP on IK. Addition of the specific protein kinase A inhibitor H89 in the patch pipette solution prevented the reduction of IK induced by both PACAP and dbcAMP. PACAP provoked a sustained increase of the resting membrane potential in cerebellar granule cells cultured either in high or low KCl‐containing medium, and this long‐term depolarizing effect of PACAP was mimicked by the IK specific blocker tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA). In addition, pre‐incubation of granule cells with TEA suppressed the effect of PACAP on resting membrane potential. TEA mimicked the neuroprotective effect of PACAP against ethanol‐induced apoptotic cell death, and the increase of caspase‐3 activity observed after exposure of granule cells to ethanol was also significantly inhibited by TEA. Taken together, the present results demonstrate that, in rat cerebellar granule cells, PACAP reduces the delayed outward rectifier K+ current by activating a type 1 PACAP (PAC1) receptor coupled to the adenylyl cyclase/protein kinase A pathway through a cholera toxin‐sensitive Gs protein. Our data also show that PACAP and TEA induce long‐term depolarization of the resting membrane potential, promote cell survival and inhibit caspase‐3 activity, suggesting that PACAP‐evoked inhibition of IK contributes to the anti‐apoptotic effect of the peptide on cerebellar granule cells.

The analysis shows that: (1) the Money Manager category perfectly played the oil bubble, got in early and started selling shortly before the bubble peak; (2) the Producer/Merchant/Processor/User category and the Nonreportable category were covering their short positions into the peak of the bubble; (3) the Swap/Dealer category benefited while the price of oil was rising, but incurred heavy losses as the price of oil collapsed; (4) we find no indications of speculation by any group of traders via the positive feedback trading or rational destabilization; and (5) we do, however, criticize the commercial hedgers for failing to arbitrage the soaring oil prices in 2008.

Distribution maps of pollutants over the cell allowed to identify their sources. Besides chromium and silicon, sulfur was found as a major pollutant species. Its preferential reaction with strontium doped lanthanum cobaltite (LSC), forming strontium sulfate SrSO4, compared to strontium doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) is revealed here. When sulfur poisoning arises in combination with chromium, a sulfur-containing strontium chromate compound is formed.

The alumina particles with different sizes play different roles. The microalumina mainly enhances the thermal stability of the polyolefin separator and provides large channels for lithium‐ion diffusion. The nanoalumina particles are helpful in improving the lithium‐ion transference number by increasing the contact interface area of electrolyte/alumina. The lithium‐ion transference number of the separators with different coatings increases from 0.32 to 0.40, mainly due to the ratio of micro/nanoalumina particles. Meanwhile, ion conductivity increases from 0.30 to 0.40 mS cm−1. As a result, the cycling stability of the lithium metal anode is greatly improved by the synergetic effect of microsized alumina particles and nanosized alumina particles.

AbstractThe aim of this article is to investigate the performances of an indirect temperature swing adsorption process for CO2 removal from nitrogen using 13X zeolite. Breakthrough experiment, with a 10% CO2–N2 mixture, were performed showing that thanks to the cooling, the adsorbent capacity is preserved and close to that of an isothermal adsorption. For the desorption step, CO2 at a concentration of nearly 100% is recovered thanks to the indirect heating and the non‐use of purge gas. During the cycle experiments, we obtained 7.9 MJ/kg for the specific heat consumption. This value is slightly higher than amine absorption ones, which is the reference process for CO2 capture. However, it has to be taken into account that there is a good potential of energy saving because our process configuration (adsorbent choice, number of beds, step duration, etc.) has not been optimized yet. Moreover, in scaled‐up process, the heat losses are of less importance, which will decrease the specific heat consumption. This is confirmed by a first estimation, which gives a value of 5.9 MJ/kg. © 2006 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 25: 327–333, 2006

However, they are idle most of the time during vehicle use and expected to retain a significant capacity when discarded from vehicle use. As a result, they may provide an additional value during and after their vehicle life, helping to reduce their total costs of ownership. We use a dynamic model to evaluate three competing approaches of using EV batteries for grid applications. These are (1) batteries installed in EVs, also known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G), as well as (2) used and (3) new batteries installed in stationary energy storage systems (ESS), which we refer to as battery-to-grid (B2G). We find that none of the approaches is likely to be implemented on a large scale as the anticipated revenues barely (if at all) offset the additional costs incurred by the corresponding applications.
