In cold regions, the occurrence of frozen ground has a fundamental control over the character of the water cycle. To investigate the impact of changing ground temperature conditions on hydrological processes in the context of climate change, a distributed hydrological model with an explicit frozen ground module was applied to an alpine watershed in the upstream area of the Hei'he River in the Qilian Mountains, northwest China. After evaluating the base model, we considered scenarios of frost-free ground and climate change. Results showed that the base model with a frozen ground module successfully captured the water balance and thermal regimes in the basin. When the frozen ground module was turned off, the simulated groundwater recharge and base flow increased by a factor of two to three because surface runoff caused by exceeding infiltration capacities at high elevations, which occurred in the base model, was eliminated. Consequently, the river hydrograph became smoother and flatter, with summer flood peaks delayed and reduced in volume. The annual mean depth where subsurface runoff was generated, was about 2.4m compared to 1.1m in the base model. For a warming climate, a combination of increasing evapotranspiration and reducing permafrost area results in smoother and flatter hydrographs, and a reduction in total river discharge. Although our analysis using numerical models has its limitations, it still provides new quantitative understanding of the influences of frozen ground and climate change on hydrological processes in an alpine watershed.

M.; Radenković, Božidar;Abstract This study considers effects of pressure of up to 110 kbar on line position and fluorescence lifetime τ for 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 transition in LMA:Mn 2+ and LMA:Mn 2+ , Nd 3+ . Energy transfer between Mn 2+ and Nd 3+ in LMA:Mn 2+ , Nd 3+ has also been considered. Results indicate pressure induced line shift towards longer wavelengths, a red-shift in both crystals with the same rate of 0.182 nm kbar −1 . Pressure influences fluorescence lifetime τ in the considered crystals differently; whereas for LMA:Mn 2+ increasing pressure causes slow linear decrease of τ , and for LMA:Mn 2+ , Nd 3+ τ increases linearly as pressure raises. Energy transfer efficiencies decrease with pressure. High pressure induced red-shift can be explained by a simple model.

This study investigates the influence of these process parameters on the electrical efficiency of the genset (ηglobal), the electrical engine efficiency (ηengine), the cold gas efficiency (CGE), and the syngas composition. Experimental tests were carried out by varying the moisture content from 11% to 23% and the electrical power from 4.7 kW to 12.8 kW on a commercial gasifier equipped with precise measuring tools. The increase of the performance when the electrical load is increased or when the moisture content in the wood chips is decreased is both quantified and discussed. Such behaviour was mainly explained by differences in engine filling rates and reactor temperatures.

Abstract Thermal cross-linking in presence of residual solvent dimethylsulfoxide without any addition of cross-linker molecules is described. This elegant method increases spectacularly the mechanical and hydrolytic stability of sulfonated aromatic polymers (SAP), making them suitable for use in liquid water also at 145 °C. Data on water uptake, mechanical properties and proton conductivity are presented and discussed from a bond energy point of view. The developed method is also inexpensive, being incorporated in the normal membrane casting procedure. This opens new horizons and hitherto conventionally disregarded SAP membranes should be reconsidered as fuel cell membranes.

Hydrogen added to natural gas improves the process of combustion with the possibility to develop engines with higher performance and lower environmental impact. In this paper experimental and numerical analyses on a multi cylinder stoichiometric heavy duty engine, fuelled with natural gasehydrogen blends, are reported. Some constrains on hydrogen content and maximum load achievable have limited the scope of investigation. A specific modelling of the reference engine was developed to extend the study at full load condition and at higher hydrogen content. The results showed a higher combustion speed when hydrogen content in the fuel is increased. However, the positive effect of shorter combustion duration on thermal efficiency is mitigated by higher wall heat loss, due to higher combustion temperatures. Therefore lower CO2 emissions are due only to the substitution of natural gas with hydrogen, making crucial the way of hydrogen producing to have a benefit on well-to-wheel CO2 emissions.

Electrochemical capacitors, called supercapacitors (SCs) or ultracapacitors, are devices conveniently used for embedded electrical energy management owing to their huge capacitance, low internal resistance and flexible control through power electronic conversion. This paper proposes a main power supply of hybrid Wind Generator (WG)–SC within the train station for feeding the traction onboard SC through specified limited feeding transit durations. Onboard SCs provide the train with the requested start–up self–energy. The hybrid WG–SCs system is an environmental–friendly source that enables the independency on national grid and guarantees an efficient bidirectional power transfer for energy management with enhanced dynamic performance. Therefore, the dynamic modelling and the experimental analysis of the modern hybrid WG–SCs used for managing the charge/discharge operation of SCs at Unity Power Factor (UPF) mode are presented. For this purpose, the Port–Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) methodology is deduced and explicitly presented. Simulation results, via MATLAB™, reveal that the proposed PCH control methodology can be successfully implemented to ensure acceptable system dynamic behavior. Numerical results are validated with experimental measurements to investigate the significance of the PCH approach for the energy management operation in eco-tractions.

Eglinton;The future trajectory of greenhouse gas concentrations depends on interactions between climate and the biogeosphere. Thawing of Arctic permafrost could release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere in this century. Ancient Ice Complex deposits outcropping along the ~7,000-kilometre-long coastline of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS), and associated shallow subsea permafrost, are two large pools of permafrost carbon, yet their vulnerabilities towards thawing and decomposition are largely unknown. Recent Arctic warming is stronger than has been predicted by several degrees, and is particularly pronounced over the coastal ESAS region. There is thus a pressing need to improve our understanding of the links between permafrost carbon and climate in this relatively inaccessible region. Here we show that extensive release of carbon from these Ice Complex deposits dominates (57 ± 2 per cent) the sedimentary carbon budget of the ESAS, the world’s largest continental shelf, overwhelming the marine and topsoil terrestrial components. Inverse modelling of the dual-carbon isotope composition of organic carbon accumulating in ESAS surface sediments, using Monte Carlo simulations to account for uncertainties, suggests that 44 ± 10 teragrams of old carbon is activated annually from Ice Complex permafrost, an order of magnitude more than has been suggested by previous studies. We estimate that about two-thirds (66 ± 16 per cent) of this old carbon escapes to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, with the remainder being re-buried in shelf sediments. Thermal collapse and erosion of these carbon-rich Pleistocene coastline and seafloor deposits may accelerate with Arctic amplification of climate warming.

This paper deals with an experimental evaluation regarding the real performance of lithium based energy storage systems for automotive applications. In particular real working operations of different lithium based storage system technologies, such as Li[NiCoMn]O-2 and LiFePO4 batteries, are compared in this work from the point of view of their application in supplying full electric and hybrid vehicles, taking as a reference the well-known behavior of lead acid batteries. For this purpose, the experimental tests carried out in laboratory are firstly performed on single storage modules in stationary conditions. In this case the related results are obtained by means of a bidirectional cycle tester based on the IGBT technology, and consent to evaluate, compare and contrast charge/discharge characteristics and efficiency at constant values of current/voltage/power for each storage technology analyzed. Then, lithium battery packs are tested in supplying a 1.8 kW electric power train using a laboratory test bench, based on a 48 V DC bus and specifically configured to simulate working operations of electric vehicles on the road. For this other experimentation the test bench is equipped with an electric brake and acquisition/control system, able to represent in laboratory the real vehicle conditions and road characteristics on predefined driving cycles at different slopes. The obtained experimental results on both charge/discharge tests and driving cycles demonstrate the advantages of using lithium technologies, mainly in terms of their high efficiency, particularly at high current values. That represents a feasible solution to offer vehicle designers and users extended driving ranges and reduced recharging times. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Since the industrial revolution, the financial sector has become a significant claimant toward the growth of human society. However, supporting the adverse environmental projects in financial terms has raised several queries about creating a direct linkage between financial market products and the environment.This research examines the nexus between sustainability, green innovations, financial technologies (FinTech), financial development, and natural resources for BRICS economies during 2000–2019. Using the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR), the results show that FinTech and natural resources adversely impact environmental sustainability across all three ranges of quantiles (0.10th-0.30th, 0.40th-0.60, and 0.70th-0.90th).Conversely, green innovations and financial development promote environmental sustainability across lower to higher-order quantiles (0.10th-0.90th), while economic growth contributes to higher emissions at major quantiles. Similar findings are endorsed using alternative estimators and suggest practical policy implications.

In cold regions, the occurrence of frozen ground has a fundamental control over the character of the water cycle. To investigate the impact of changing ground temperature conditions on hydrological processes in the context of climate change, a distributed hydrological model with an explicit frozen ground module was applied to an alpine watershed in the upstream area of the Hei'he River in the Qilian Mountains, northwest China. After evaluating the base model, we considered scenarios of frost-free ground and climate change. Results showed that the base model with a frozen ground module successfully captured the water balance and thermal regimes in the basin. When the frozen ground module was turned off, the simulated groundwater recharge and base flow increased by a factor of two to three because surface runoff caused by exceeding infiltration capacities at high elevations, which occurred in the base model, was eliminated. Consequently, the river hydrograph became smoother and flatter, with summer flood peaks delayed and reduced in volume. The annual mean depth where subsurface runoff was generated, was about 2.4m compared to 1.1m in the base model. For a warming climate, a combination of increasing evapotranspiration and reducing permafrost area results in smoother and flatter hydrographs, and a reduction in total river discharge. Although our analysis using numerical models has its limitations, it still provides new quantitative understanding of the influences of frozen ground and climate change on hydrological processes in an alpine watershed.

Energy transfer between Mn 2+ and Nd 3+ in LMA:Mn 2+ , Nd 3+ has also been considered. Results indicate pressure induced line shift towards longer wavelengths, a red-shift in both crystals with the same rate of 0.182 nm kbar −1 . Pressure influences fluorescence lifetime τ in the considered crystals differently; whereas for LMA:Mn 2+ increasing pressure causes slow linear decrease of τ , and for LMA:Mn 2+ , Nd 3+ τ increases linearly as pressure raises. Energy transfer efficiencies decrease with pressure. High pressure induced red-shift can be explained by a simple model.

This study investigates the influence of these process parameters on the electrical efficiency of the genset (ηglobal), the electrical engine efficiency (ηengine), the cold gas efficiency (CGE), and the syngas composition. Experimental tests were carried out by varying the moisture content from 11% to 23% and the electrical power from 4.7 kW to 12.8 kW on a commercial gasifier equipped with precise measuring tools. The increase of the performance when the electrical load is increased or when the moisture content in the wood chips is decreased is both quantified and discussed. Such behaviour was mainly explained by differences in engine filling rates and reactor temperatures.

Abstract Thermal cross-linking in presence of residual solvent dimethylsulfoxide without any addition of cross-linker molecules is described. This elegant method increases spectacularly the mechanical and hydrolytic stability of sulfonated aromatic polymers (SAP), making them suitable for use in liquid water also at 145 °C. Data on water uptake, mechanical properties and proton conductivity are presented and discussed from a bond energy point of view. The developed method is also inexpensive, being incorporated in the normal membrane casting procedure. This opens new horizons and hitherto conventionally disregarded SAP membranes should be reconsidered as fuel cell membranes.

Hydrogen added to natural gas improves the process of combustion with the possibility to develop engines with higher performance and lower environmental impact. In this paper experimental and numerical analyses on a multi cylinder stoichiometric heavy duty engine, fuelled with natural gasehydrogen blends, are reported. Some constrains on hydrogen content and maximum load achievable have limited the scope of investigation. A specific modelling of the reference engine was developed to extend the study at full load condition and at higher hydrogen content. The results showed a higher combustion speed when hydrogen content in the fuel is increased. However, the positive effect of shorter combustion duration on thermal efficiency is mitigated by higher wall heat loss, due to higher combustion temperatures. Therefore lower CO2 emissions are due only to the substitution of natural gas with hydrogen, making crucial the way of hydrogen producing to have a benefit on well-to-wheel CO2 emissions.

Electrochemical capacitors, called supercapacitors (SCs) or ultracapacitors, are devices conveniently used for embedded electrical energy management owing to their huge capacitance, low internal resistance and flexible control through power electronic conversion. This paper proposes a main power supply of hybrid Wind Generator (WG)–SC within the train station for feeding the traction onboard SC through specified limited feeding transit durations. Onboard SCs provide the train with the requested start–up self–energy. The hybrid WG–SCs system is an environmental–friendly source that enables the independency on national grid and guarantees an efficient bidirectional power transfer for energy management with enhanced dynamic performance. Therefore, the dynamic modelling and the experimental analysis of the modern hybrid WG–SCs used for managing the charge/discharge operation of SCs at Unity Power Factor (UPF) mode are presented. For this purpose, the Port–Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) methodology is deduced and explicitly presented. Simulation results, via MATLAB™, reveal that the proposed PCH control methodology can be successfully implemented to ensure acceptable system dynamic behavior. Numerical results are validated with experimental measurements to investigate the significance of the PCH approach for the energy management operation in eco-tractions.

Eglinton;The future trajectory of greenhouse gas concentrations depends on interactions between climate and the biogeosphere. Thawing of Arctic permafrost could release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere in this century. Ancient Ice Complex deposits outcropping along the ~7,000-kilometre-long coastline of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS), and associated shallow subsea permafrost, are two large pools of permafrost carbon, yet their vulnerabilities towards thawing and decomposition are largely unknown. Recent Arctic warming is stronger than has been predicted by several degrees, and is particularly pronounced over the coastal ESAS region. There is thus a pressing need to improve our understanding of the links between permafrost carbon and climate in this relatively inaccessible region. Here we show that extensive release of carbon from these Ice Complex deposits dominates (57 ± 2 per cent) the sedimentary carbon budget of the ESAS, the world’s largest continental shelf, overwhelming the marine and topsoil terrestrial components. Inverse modelling of the dual-carbon isotope composition of organic carbon accumulating in ESAS surface sediments, using Monte Carlo simulations to account for uncertainties, suggests that 44 ± 10 teragrams of old carbon is activated annually from Ice Complex permafrost, an order of magnitude more than has been suggested by previous studies. We estimate that about two-thirds (66 ± 16 per cent) of this old carbon escapes to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, with the remainder being re-buried in shelf sediments. Thermal collapse and erosion of these carbon-rich Pleistocene coastline and seafloor deposits may accelerate with Arctic amplification of climate warming.

This paper deals with an experimental evaluation regarding the real performance of lithium based energy storage systems for automotive applications. In particular real working operations of different lithium based storage system technologies, such as Li[NiCoMn]O-2 and LiFePO4 batteries, are compared in this work from the point of view of their application in supplying full electric and hybrid vehicles, taking as a reference the well-known behavior of lead acid batteries. For this purpose, the experimental tests carried out in laboratory are firstly performed on single storage modules in stationary conditions. In this case the related results are obtained by means of a bidirectional cycle tester based on the IGBT technology, and consent to evaluate, compare and contrast charge/discharge characteristics and efficiency at constant values of current/voltage/power for each storage technology analyzed. Then, lithium battery packs are tested in supplying a 1.8 kW electric power train using a laboratory test bench, based on a 48 V DC bus and specifically configured to simulate working operations of electric vehicles on the road. For this other experimentation the test bench is equipped with an electric brake and acquisition/control system, able to represent in laboratory the real vehicle conditions and road characteristics on predefined driving cycles at different slopes. The obtained experimental results on both charge/discharge tests and driving cycles demonstrate the advantages of using lithium technologies, mainly in terms of their high efficiency, particularly at high current values. That represents a feasible solution to offer vehicle designers and users extended driving ranges and reduced recharging times. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Since the industrial revolution, the financial sector has become a significant claimant toward the growth of human society. However, supporting the adverse environmental projects in financial terms has raised several queries about creating a direct linkage between financial market products and the environment.This research examines the nexus between sustainability, green innovations, financial technologies (FinTech), financial development, and natural resources for BRICS economies during 2000–2019. Using the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR), the results show that FinTech and natural resources adversely impact environmental sustainability across all three ranges of quantiles (0.10th-0.30th, 0.40th-0.60, and 0.70th-0.90th).Conversely, green innovations and financial development promote environmental sustainability across lower to higher-order quantiles (0.10th-0.90th), while economic growth contributes to higher emissions at major quantiles. Similar findings are endorsed using alternative estimators and suggest practical policy implications.
