    A major challenge in sustainability science is identifying targets that maximize ecosystem benefits to humanity while minimizing the risk of crossing critical system thresholds. One critical threshold is the biomass at which populations become so depleted that their population growth rates become negative—depensation. Here, we evaluate how the value of monitoring information increases as a natural resource spends more time near the critical threshold. This benefit emerges because higher monitoring precision promotes higher yield and a greater capacity to recover from overharvest. We show that precautionary buffers that trigger increased monitoring precision as resource levels decline may offer a way to minimize monitoring costs and maximize profits. In a world of finite resources, improving our understanding of the trade-off between precision in estimates of population status and the costs of mismanagement will benefit stakeholders that shoulder the burden of these economic and social costs.

    Background: Climate change has been shown to be directly linked to multiple physiological sequelae and to impact health consequences. However, the impact of climate change on mental health globally, particularly among vulnerable populations, is less well understood. Objective: To explore the mental health impacts of climate change in vulnerable populations globally. Methods: We performed an integrative literature review to identify published articles that addressed the research question: What are the mental health impacts of climate change among vulnerable populations globally? The Vulnerable Populations Conceptual Model served as a theoretical model during the review process and data synthesis. Findings/Results: One hundred and four articles were selected for inclusion in this review after a comprehensive review of 1828 manuscripts. Articles were diverse in scope and populations addressed. Land-vulnerable persons (either due to occupation or geographic location), Indigenous persons, children, older adults, and climate migrants were among the vulnerable populations whose mental health was most impacted by climate change. The most prevalent mental health responses to climate change included solastalgia, suicidality, depression, anxiety/eco-anxiety, PTSD, substance use, insomnia, and behavioral disturbance. Conclusions: Mental health professionals including physicians, nurses, physician assistants and other healthcare providers have the opportunity to mitigate the mental health impacts of climate change among vulnerable populations through assessment, preventative education and care. An inclusive and trauma-informed response to climate-related disasters, use of validated measures of mental health, and a long-term therapeutic relationship that extends beyond the immediate consequences of climate change-related events are approaches to successful mental health care in a climate-changing world.

    Management decisions concerning phosphorus (P) fertilization affect the profitability of crop production and potential water quality impairment. Soil testing for P provides a useful diagnostic framework to assess P bioavailability that informs management decisions to optimize P use in nutrient management and mitigate environmental impairment. Management factors such as tillage and P fertilization strategy can influence crop yield and the potential for soil and P losses with surface runoff. Investigation into which forms of soil and P losses that do occur from corn-soybean rotations in Iowa systems can inform which methodologies best quantify forms of P that will pose greater effects on water quality and which management decisions minimize losses while maintaining agronomic productivity. This research field calibrated a recently widely-adopted soil P test that uses weak organic acids with corn and soybean yield to identify critical soil-test P concentrations. The weak organic acids test extracted less soil P and performed more poorly than currently routine tests at relating soil-test P to crop yield. A second study was conducted to quantify the effect of P fertilization strategy and tillage on soil and P losses with runoff in a corn-soybean rotation in Northwest Iowa. Corn yield and soil loss were the highest with tillage, the combination of tillage and broadcast P resulted in the highest runoff TP loss, and the dissolved-reactive fraction of the total P loss was much higher with no-till. The combination of chisel-plow/disking and annual subsurface band placement of P fertilizer led to the lowest losses of dissolved-reactive P and total P, while optimizing crop yields. A third study compared multiple methods for measuring soluble P in runoff, and how management factors in Iowa cropping systems affect their performance.     Impacts of climate change on natural and human systems will become increasingly severe as the magnitude of climate change increases. Climate change adaptation interventions to address current and projected impacts are thus paramount. Yet, evidence on their effectiveness remains limited, highlighting the need for appropriate ecological indicators to measure progress of climate change adaptation for the natural environment. We outline conceptual, analytical, and practical challenges in developing such indicators, before proposing a framework with three process-based and two results-based indicator types to track progress in adapting to climate change. We emphasize the importance of dynamic assessment and modification over time, as new adaptation targets are set and/or as intervention actions are monitored and evaluated. Our framework and proposed indicators are flexible and widely applicable across species, habitats, and monitoring programmes, and could be accommodated within existing national or international frameworks to enable the evaluation of both large-scale policy instruments and local management interventions. We conclude by suggesting further work required to develop these indicators fully, and hope this will stimulate the use of ecological indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of policy interventions for the adaptation of the natural environment across the globe.

    The future performance of the widely abundant European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) across its ecological amplitude is uncertain. Although beech is considered drought-sensitive and thus negatively affected by drought events, scientific evidence indicating increasing drought vulnerability under climate change on a cross-regional scale remains elusive. While evaluating changes in climate sensitivity of secondary growth offers a promising avenue, studies from productive, closed-canopy forests suffer from knowledge gaps, especially regarding the natural variability of climate sensitivity and how it relates to radial growth as an indicator of tree vitality. Since beech is sensitive to drought, we in this study use a drought index as a climate variable to account for the combined effects of temperature and water availability and explore how the drought sensitivity of secondary growth varies temporally in dependence on growth variability, growth trends, and climatic water availability across the species' ecological amplitude. Our results show that drought sensitivity is highly variable and non-stationary, though consistently higher at dry sites compared to moist sites. Increasing drought sensitivity can largely be explained by increasing climatic aridity, especially as it is exacerbated by climate change and trees' rank progression within forest communities, as (co-)dominant trees are more sensitive to extra-canopy climatic conditions than trees embedded in understories. However, during the driest periods of the 20th century, growth showed clear signs of being decoupled from climate. This may indicate fundamental changes in system behavior and be early-warning signals of decreasing drought tolerance. The multiple significant interaction terms in our model elucidate the complexity of European beech's drought sensitivity, which needs to be taken into consideration when assessing this species' response to climate change.

    Moss-associated N2 fixation by epiphytic microbes is a key biogeochemical process in nutrient-limited high-latitude ecosystems. Abiotic drivers, such as temperature and moisture, and the identity of host mosses are critical sources of variation in N2 fixation rates. An understanding of the potential interaction between these factors is essential for predicting N inputs as moss communities change with the climate. To further understand the drivers and results of N2 fixation rate variation, we obtained natural abundance values of C and N isotopes and an associated rate of N2 fixation with 15N2 gas incubations in 34 moss species collected in three regions across Alaska, USA. We hypothesized that δ15N values would increase toward 0‰ with higher N2 fixation to reflect the increasing contribution of fixed N2 in moss biomass. Second, we hypothesized that δ13C and N2 fixation would be positively related, as enriched δ13C signatures reflect abiotic conditions favorable to N2 fixation. We expected that the magnitude of these relationships would vary among types of host mosses, reflecting differences in anatomy and habitat. We found little support for our first hypothesis, with only a modest positive relationship between N2 fixation rates and δ15N in a structural equation model. We found a significant positive relationship between δ13C and N2 fixation only in Hypnales, where the probability of N2 fixation activity reached 95% when δ13C values exceeded - 30.4‰. We conclude that moisture and temperature interact strongly with host moss identity in determining the extent to which abiotic conditions impact associated N2 fixation rates.

    The over 15 million metric tonnes of carbon black produced annually emit carbon dioxide in the range of 29–79 million metric tonnes each year. With the renaissance of carbon black in many new renewable energy applications as well as the growing transportation sector, where carbon black is used as a rubber reinforcement agent in car tires, the carbon black market is expected to grow by 66% over the next 9 years. As such, it is important to better understand energy intensity and carbon dioxide emissions of carbon black production. In this work, the furnace black process is studied in detail using process models to provide insights into mass and energy balances, economics, and potential pathways for lowering the environmental impact of carbon black production. Current state-of-the-art carbon black facilities typically flare the tail gas of the carbon black reactor. While low in heating value, this tail gas contains considerable amounts of energy and flaring this tail gas leads to low overall efficiency (39.6%). The efficiency of the furnace black process can be improved if the tail gas is used to produce electricity. However, the high capital investment cost and increased operating costs make it difficult to operate electricity generation from the tail gas economically. Steam co-generation (together with electricity generation) on the other hand is shown to substantially improve energy efficiency as well as economics, provided that steam users are nearby. Steam co-generation can be achieved via back-pressure steam turbines so that the low-pressure exhaust steam (∼2 bar/120 °C) can be used locally for heating or drying purposes. Furthermore, the potential of utilizing hydrogen to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is investigated. Using hydrogen as fuel for the carbon black reactor instead of natural gas is shown to reduce the carbon dioxide footprint by 19%. However, current prices of hydrogen lead to a steep increase in the levelized cost of carbon black (47%).

    AbstractIt is not known whether dietary guidelines proposing a limited intake of animal protein are compatible with the adoption of circular food systems. Using a resource-allocation model, we compared the effects of circularity on the supply of animal-source nutrients in Europe with the nutritional requirements of the EAT-Lancet reference diet. We found the two to be compatible in terms of total animal-source proteins but not specific animal-source foods; in particular, the EAT-Lancet guidelines recommend larger quantities of poultry meat over beef and pork, while a circular food system produces mainly milk, dairy-beef and pork. Compared with the EAT-Lancet reference diet, greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by up to 31% and arable land use reduced by up to 42%. Careful consideration of the feasible substitutability between animal-source foods is needed to define potential roles of animal products in circular human diets.

    Fenestration, comprising windows and other openings in a building, influences occupant health and well-being while also enhancing energy efficiency through optimized design and placement. Selecting glazing materials that block or filter harmful UV radiation is crucial, as is having reliable methods to measure their UV transmission. This research paper, which comprises Part I of II, conducts an exhaustive analysis of the predominant methodologies and associated challenges inherent in assessing ultraviolet (UV) radiation transmission and deterioration status in fenestration, with particular emphasis on the usage of spectrophotometers and radiometers. It details the economic and operational challenges associated with these instruments and the limitations they pose in terms of sample size and the impact of glazing material degradation over time. Additionally, the paper provides a comparative analysis of UV radiation transmission characteristics across different glazing configurations such as green or yellow patterned glass, laminate glass, clear glass treated with UV protection film, and float glass. The review identifies laminated glass material as offering the best protection. Although spectrophotometers and radiometers offer high levels of accuracy in transmission data detection, their adoption is hindered by considerable financial and operational challenges. The paper underscores the need for developing alternative methodologies that are economically viable, operationally less complex, and are capable of overcoming the limitations of the traditional methods of detection, which will facilitate optimal fenestration configurations for UV protection and energy efficiency in buildings. The proposed Part II paper will explore UV imaging, image processing, and computer vision techniques as potential alternative approaches.
