Algae production process is a key cost center in production of biofuels/bioproducts from microalgae. Decline in the growth of algae in outdoor ponds during non-optimal conditions is one of the hurdles for achieving consistently high algal production rates. An optimal controller can be used to overcome this limitation and provide reliable growth in outdoor conditions. A model predictive controller (MPC) was developed to optimize the algal growth, predicted by flux balance analysis, under natural disturbances, embedding within the cost function, the economic and environmental constraints associated with the process. The model, developed in MATLAB, was validated on a 30-L continuous algal culture under light, temperature and a combination of light and temperature disturbances. The MPC proved effective in minimization of a decrease in growth under these natural disturbances. The growth rates with MPC were observed to be 79-116% higher as compared to the non-MPC growth.

These two models or their variations have been used by the electric power industry. Model 1 is based on the random sampling of generator and transmission line status for each hour. Model 2 advances the generation and transmission using the next-event approach. Mathematical analysis and system studies indicate that model 2 converges slower than model 1. The simulation time for model 2 is generally more than twice the mean duration of loss of load. The CPU time per year of simulation is shorter for model 2. However, the total CPU time for model 2 is much longer than for model 1.

Thomas E. Field in OpenAIREGlobal sensitivity analysis (GSA) of distribution system with respect to stochastic PV and load variations plays an important role in designing optimal voltage control schemes. This paper proposes a data-driven framework for GSA of distribution system. In particular, two representative surrogate modeling-based approaches are developed, including the traditional Gaussian process-based and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) kernel ones. The key idea is to develop a surrogate model that captures the hidden global relationship between voltage and real and reactive power injections from the historical data. With the surrogate model, the Sobol indices can be conveniently calculated through either the sampling-based method or the analytical method to assess the global sensitivity of voltage to variations of load and PV power injections. The sampling-based method estimates the Sobol indices using Monte Carlo simulations while the analytical method calculates them by resorting to the ANOVA expansion framework. Comparison results with other model-based GSA methods on the unbalanced three-phase IEEE 37-bus and 123-bus distribution systems show that the proposed framework can achieve much higher computational efficiency with negligible loss of accuracy. The results on a real 240-bus distribution system using actual smart meter data further validate the feasibility and scalability of the proposed framework.

Rosen;Abstract This study develops a novel sustainability assessment methodology for energy systems using life-cycle emission factors and sustainability indicators. Here, the global warming and environmental impact dimensions of the sustainability assessment methodology are examined in detail. A comparative analysis shows that a wind-battery system produces fewer potential global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, air pollution, and water pollution impacts compared to a gas-fired system. The wind-battery system generates 13% of the life-cycle GHG emissions and 22% of the life-cycle ozone-depleting substance emissions of a gas-fired power plant. Nitrous oxide contributes more than 90% of the stratospheric ozone depletion potential of gas-fired and wind-battery systems.

This paper analyzes a phasor-based frequency measurement method that considers the effect of dynamic frequency, and proposes a method to improve the dynamic performance of the phasor-based frequency measurements. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results of laboratory experiments are presented to show the performance of the proposed method compared to frequency measurements obtained from commercial phasor measurement units (PMUs).

Hydrogen yield was, however, low. Extremely rich soot-free two-stage flames could be obtained, but they were unstable.

E.; Shope, Jean Thatcher; Butchart, Amy; Renner, Deborah;Forty-nine schools (N = 5,680 fifth and sixth grade students) were assigned to pre test/treatment, pretest/no treatment, no pretest/treatment, and no pretest/no treat ment conditions in the context of an alcohol misuse prevention study. At the first posttest, five months after the pretest and two months after the intervention, the effects of the pretest and of the intervention were examined. The analyses showed that failure to correct for the design effect due to clustering within schools resulted in the overestimation of the significance of treatment and pretest effects. After correction for the design effect, a significant treatment effect in the hypothesized direction was found with respect to students' awareness of the content of the curriculum. As hypo thesized, significant treatment effects on the alcohol use and misuse measures had not yet developed but are expected to occur at subsequent posttest occasions. Significant pretest effects were found for indices measuring trouble with peers resulting from students' alcohol use, students' internal health locus of control, and their perceptions of adults as a locus of control for their health. Two of the three pretest effects were in the direction that would be hypothesized if the pretest were providing the same impe tus as the intervention. Implications of these findings for school-based substance abuse prevention programs are discussed.

The present study is motivated by the need to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation given the new wave of chase for higher economic growth trajectories comes with its environmental cost implications, especially among developing blocs like the Emerging 7 (E7) countries. There is a consistent trade-off between economic growth versus environmental quality. Government apparatus are perpetually on the chase for low-carbon emission policies via the pursuit for green economy. To this end, this present study extends the conventional environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) argument by incorporating the role of institution in emerging industrialized economies (E7) and using second-generation panel analysis methods like mean group (MG), augmented mean group (AMG), common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG), and the Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test for more robust estimates and inferences. To this end, we explore the long-run and causality relationship between economic growth, quadratic form of economic growth, institutional quality, trade flow, investment in energy sector, and financial development in an EKC environment. Empirical analysis established a long-run equilibrium relationship among the outlined variables over the study period. The long-run regression shows the presence of EKC in the E7. Thus, suggesting the preference for GDP growth over environmental quality at the earlier stage of growth curve. Interestingly, investment in energy, trade flow dynamics across the blocs, and financial development dampens the detrimental effect of environmental pollution as we observed negative relationship with the ecological footprint. On the contrary, quality of institution is weak as institutional quality increase (worsen) the quality of environment in the E7 economies. From a policy perspective, this current study proposed the need for more stringent environmental treaties and regulations and promotion of green economy without compromising economic growth. In the conclusion part of the study, more details and specifics about the policy blueprint are presented.

Manas R. Samantaray in OpenAIREAbstract Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) seeded plasmonic nanofluids (PNFs) have shown promising results in overall performance enhancement of direct absorption solar collector (DASC) due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. For the work presented here, Au-NPs were synthesized by the wet chemical method and were utilized to prepare plasmonic nanofluid. The surface plasmon resonance peak of Au-NPs was observed at 531 nm using UV–Visible spectrophotometer study. The testing for performance enhancement of gold plasmonic nanofluid (GPNF) laden DASC so far is limited to laboratory scale setups or simulation studies. Considering the dearth of outdoor experimental studies, an attempt has been made in the present study to evaluate the thermal performance of Au-NPs (∼40 nm) based nanofluid (∼0.0002 wt%) in full scale DASC. The experiments have been performed at different flow rates under clear sky outdoor conditions in winter season at Jalandhar, India. The maximum collector outlet temperature was measured to be 55 °C with GPNF which is about 7 °C higher than the maximum outlet temperature obtained with de-ionized water as working fluid. Thermal efficiency with GPNF is about 33% higher than de-ionized water at the optimal flow rate of 0.030 kg/s.
