The paper describes formation and spreading of dense shelf waters in the Adriatic Sea (North Adriatic Dense Water, NAdDW) during the winter of 2012 as a consequence of an intense and long cold air outbreak of northeasterly Bora winds. As a result, during February 2012 northern Adriatic Sea water temperature dropped to about 6 degrees C and density exceeded 1030 kg/m(3), most likely the maximum value since 1929. NAdDW dynamics has been investigated by means of a 3-D ocean-wave coupled model running on a high resolution and eddy-permitting grid. The numerical experiments have relied on the Coupled-Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment-Transport (COAWST) system forced one-way with atmospheric forcings provided by the model COSMO-17. A suite of observational data has been used to characterize the Bora event and evaluate numerical model performance. At sub-basin scales, the newly formed waters flowing southerly have produced a water renewal of the northern Adriatic, as more than 50% of water volumes have left the basin. Dense waters volume transports, evaluated through different Adriatic cross-sections, have been modulated by tides (damped for the densest water masses) and reached about 1 Sv. The contribution of wave-induced forcings has been quantified and examined, indicating that these represent a major driving mechanism during NAdDW production and spreading phases. This work provides evidence that NAdDW is spread accordingly with two different mechanisms: at early stages of its formation, the wind-driven ocean circulation pushes newly formed waters to leave the northern basin with relatively high speeds (about 0.30 m/s). Later on, remaining NAdDW leaks slowly out (0.09 m/s as average) from the production site. Residence times of dense waters in the north, middle, and south Adriatic Sea are also documented. Due to the lack of long-term test data, current fouling models are developed based on accelerated particulate fouling tests that have the low precision and hence are inapplicable for predicting combined fouling in most practical cooling tower systems. In addition, the constant values of fouling resistance (factor) recommended by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) are extremely limited under different operating conditions. To overcome these challenges, this research developed and validated two fouling prediction models based on experimental long-term tests. One of the models was in the form of a ratio of asymptotic fouling resistance of the enhanced tube to that of the plain tube ( R f ∗ / R f , p ∗ ), and the other one was in the form of the asymptotic fouling resistance of the directly enhanced tube ( R f ∗ ). Both models considered water quality, water velocity, and the tube geometries as the variables with the acceptable accuracy for prediction. 1) For the water quality, the parameter of valid concentration ( C com ) of cooling water was defined in this study, which reflected the potential amount of valid components to form the fouling. 2) For the water velocity, its impacts on the two critical parameters of the fouling process: sticking probability ( P ) and deposit bond strength ( ξ ) were investigated using experimental studies. Test results showed that in enhanced tubes with the increased water velocity the sticking probability ( P ) decreased continuously while the deposit bond strength (ξ) initially increased, and then, decreased. 3) For the tube geometries, by taking the parameters of tube geometries as variables the multi-variable correlations of the sticking probability ( P ) and deposit bond strength ( ξ ) were developed. From the results the generalized fouling prediction model as a ratio of asymptotic fouling resistance ( R f ∗ / R f , p ∗ ) was recommended for the application in HVAC&R industry due to its suitability and accuracy in practical project applications.

AbstractThis research demonstrates that modeling approaches can be used to identify priority areas to implement green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) resulting in improved water quality outcomes. The total suspended solids (TSS) washoff loading from watersheds in Lucas County, Ohio due the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) was reported based on 2015 rain data. The highest TSS loading was experienced in the winter season in 80% of the watersheds. Subcatchments with the highest predicted TSS washoff loadings were identified as priority areas or hotspots. In subsequent simulations, GSI implementation in hotspots improved water quality by more than twofold as compared to indiscriminate implementation of GSI. These hotspot maps are being used by regional stormwater stakeholders to focus their urban water quality efforts and to identify site characteristics that may be used to inform environmental policy.

Belowground herbivory is commonly overlooked as a mechanism of top‐down control in vegetated habitats, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. Recent research has revealed that increased densities of the herbivorous crab Sesarma reticulatum have led to runaway herbivory and widespread salt marsh die‐off on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Aboveground herbivory is a major driver of this cordgrass habitat loss, but the role of belowground grazing is poorly understood. Sesarma live in communal burrows typically consisting of 1–2 openings and containing 2–3 crabs. However, at die‐off sites, burrow complexes can cover >90% of the low marsh zone, with crab densities as high as 50 crabs/m2 and burrow opening densities of 170 openings/m2. The magnitude of belowground Sesarma activity in association with salt marsh die‐off provides an excellent opportunity to extend our knowledge of belowground herbivory impacts in coastal wetlands. Since Sesarma burrows allow access to cordgrass roots and rhizomes, and Sesarma are frequently restricted to burrows by thermal stress and predation, we hypothesized that belowground herbivory would be widespread in die‐off areas. We experimentally demonstrate that Sesarma readily eat belowground roots and rhizomes in addition to aboveground cordgrass leaves. We then partitioned above‐ and belowground herbivory with field manipulations and found that belowground grazing is not only common, but can cause total plant mortality. Additional experiments revealed that plants remain vulnerable to belowground herbivory even after reaching a size refuge from aboveground grazing. This suggests that belowground herbivory contributes to salt marsh die‐offs and adds to growing evidence that belowground herbivory is a widespread structuring force in plant communities that can limit habitat persistence.

Contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals and pesticides can cause direct toxic effects when released into aquatic environments. Sensitive species may be impaired by sublethal effects or decimated by lethality, and this ecological alteration may initiate a trophic cascade or a release from competition that secondarily leads to responses in tolerant species. Contaminants may exert direct effects on keystone facilitator and foundation species, and contaminant-induced changes in nutrient and oxygen dynamics may alter ecosystem function. Thus, populations and communities in nature may be directly and/or indirectly affected by exposure to pollutants. While the direct effects of toxicants usually reduce organism abundance, indirect effects may lead to increased or decreased abundance. Here we review 150 papers that reference indirect toxicant effects in aquatic environments. Studies of accidental contaminant release, chronic contamination and experimental manipulations have identified indirect contaminant effects in pelagic and benthic communities caused by many types of pollutants. Contaminant-induced changes in behavior, competition and predation/grazing rate can alter species abundances or community composition, and enhance, mask or spuriously indicate direct contaminant effects. Trophic cascades were found in 60% of the manipulative studies and, most commonly, primary producers increased in abundance when grazers were selectively eliminated by contaminants. Competitive release may also be common, but is difficult to distinguish from trophic cascades because few experiments are designed to isolate the mechanism(s) causing indirect effects. Indirect contaminant effects may have profound implications in environments with strong trophic cascades such as the freshwater pelagic. In spite of their undesirable environmental influence, contaminants can be useful manipulative tools for the study of trophic and competitive interactions in natural communities.

Effective societal responses to rapid climate change in the Arctic rely on an accurate representation of region-specific ecosystem properties and processes. However, this is limited by the scarcity and patchy distribution of field measurements. Here, we use a comprehensive, geo-referenced database of primary field measurements in 1,840 published studies across the Arctic to identify statistically significant spatial biases in field sampling and study citation across this globally important region. We find that 31% of all study citations are derived from sites located within 50 km of just two research sites: Toolik Lake in the USA and Abisko in Sweden. Furthermore, relatively colder, more rapidly warming and sparsely vegetated sites are under-sampled and under-recognized in terms of citations, particularly among microbiology-related studies. The poorly sampled and cited areas, mainly in the Canadian high-Arctic archipelago and the Arctic coastline of Russia, constitute a large fraction of the Arctic ice-free land area. Our results suggest that the current pattern of sampling and citation may bias the scientific consensuses that underpin attempts to accurately predict and effectively mitigate climate change in the region. Further work is required to increase both the quality and quantity of sampling, and incorporate existing literature from poorly cited areas to generate a more representative picture of Arctic climate change and its environmental impacts.

Territorial cichlids were presented for 30 min with a conspecific male intruder (contained in a clear glass tube). Eight hr prior, 2 groups were administered alcohol (0.15 or 0.30 percent in the aquaria water). A third group served as a control. Three responses were recorded to allow analysis of topographic changes in behavior as well as changes in absolute levels. During the habituation phase, the normal group showed a sequence of long displays, followed by shorter ones as the frequency of attacks increased. The occurrence of threat which gradually gives way to attack is characteristic of the agonistic behavior of this species. In contrast to the controls, the 0.15 percent group was hyperaggressive, while the 0.30 percent group was hypoaggressive. Furthermore, the patterning of responses were abnormal. The 0.15 percent group gave abbreviated threats and more attacks (interpreted as a tendency to attack without warning); whereas, the 0.30 percent group gave many long threat displays, but few attacks. A stimulus specificity test provided strong evidence that the waning found during the initial phase was habituation.

We have investigated to what extent the laboratory studies are consistent with field measurements in a small stratified lake. We propose the rate of energy dissipation and corresponding Kolmogorov velocity are important scaling variables that describe the enhanced algal growth and the uptake of nutrients in a moving fluid under laboratory and field conditions. The ratio of nutrient flux to an alga in a moving fluid versus the nutrient flux in a stagnant fluid (Sherwood number) is quantified by the ratio of advective nutrient transport to molecular diffusion of a nutrient (Peclet number, PeK ). The advective transport of nutrients is described by the layer-averaged Kolmogorov velocity ( u K ) . An enhanced algal growth due to fluid motion is proposed over the Peclet number range 6.7> PeK >1.3 , with the maximal growth at PeK =2.9 . AbstractStudying the mechanisms that enable coral populations to inhabit spatially varying thermal environments can help evaluate how they will respond in time to the effects of global climate change and elucidate the evolutionary forces that enable or constrain adaptation. Inshore reefs in the Florida Keys experience higher temperatures than offshore reefs for prolonged periods during the summer. We conducted a common garden experiment with heat stress as our selective agent to test for local thermal adaptation in corals from inshore and offshore reefs. We show that inshore corals are more tolerant of a 6‐week temperature stress than offshore corals. Compared with inshore corals, offshore corals in the 31 °C treatment showed significantly elevated bleaching levels concomitant with a tendency towards reduced growth. In addition, dinoflagellate symbionts (Symbiodinium sp.) of offshore corals exhibited reduced photosynthetic efficiency. We did not detect differences in the frequencies of major (>5%) haplotypes comprising Symbiodinium communities hosted by inshore and offshore corals, nor did we observe frequency shifts (‘shuffling’) in response to thermal stress. Instead, coral host populations showed significant genetic divergence between inshore and offshore reefs, suggesting that in Porites astreoides, the coral host might play a prominent role in holobiont thermotolerance. Our results demonstrate that coral populations inhabiting reefs <10‐km apart can exhibit substantial differences in their physiological response to thermal stress, which could impact their population dynamics under climate change.
