    Conductive polymers are widely used as active and auxiliary materials for organic photovoltaic cells due to their easily tunable properties, high electronic conductivity, and light absorption. Several conductive polymers show the cathodic photogalvanic effect in pristine state. Recently, photoelectrochemical oxygen reduction has been demonstrated for nickel complexes of Salen-type ligands. Herein, we report an unexpected inversion of the photogalvanic effect caused by doping of the NiSalen polymers with anionic porphyrins. The observed effect was studied by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chopped light chronoamperometry. While pristine NiSalens exhibit cathodic photopolarization, doping with porphyrins inverts the polarization. As a result, photoelectrochemical oxidation of the ascorbate proceeds smoothly on the NiSalen electrode doped with zinc porphyrins. The highest photocurrents were observed on NiSalen polymer with o-phenylene imine bridge, doped with anionic zinc porphyrin. Assuming this, porphyrin serves both as a catalytic center for the oxidation of ascorbate and an internal electron donor, facilitating the photoinduced charge transport and anodic depolarization.

    Production of biodiesel from edible vegetable oils using homogenous catalysts negatively impacts food availability and cost while generating significant amounts of caustic wastewater during purification. Thus, there is an urgent need to utilize low-cost, non-food feedstocks for the production of biodiesel using sustainable heterogeneous catalysis. The objective of this study was to synthesize a novel supported nano-magnetic catalyst (CaO/Fe2O3/feldspar) for the production of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) from waste and low-cost plant seed oils, including Sinapis arvensis (wild mustard), Carthamus oxyacantha (wild safflower) and Pongamia pinnata (karanja). The structure, morphology, surface area, porosity, crystallinity, and magnetization of the nano-magnetic catalyst was confirmed using XRD, FESEM/EDX, BET, and VSM. The maximum biodiesel yield (93.6–99.9%) was achieved at 1.0 or 1.5 wt.% catalyst with methanol-to-oil molar ratios of 5:1 or 10:1 at 40 °C for 2 h. The CaO/Fe2O3/feldspar catalyst retained high activity for four consecutive cycles for conversion of karanja, wild mustard, and wild safflower oils. The effective separation of the catalyst from biodiesel was achieved using an external magnet. Various different physico-chemical parameters, such as pour point, density, cloud point, iodine value, acid value, and cetane number, were also determined for the optimized fuels and found to be within the ranges specified in ASTM D6751 and EN 14214, where applicable.

    To address the issues of greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuels, vegetable oilseeds, especially non-food oilseeds, are used as an alternative fuel resource. Vegetable oil derived from these oilseeds can be upgraded into hydrocarbon biofuel. Catalytic cracking and hydroprocessing are two of the most promising pathways for converting vegetable oil to hydrocarbon biofuel. Heterogeneous catalysts play a critical role in those processes. The present review summarizes current progresses and remaining challenges of vegetable oil upgrading to biofuel. The catalyst properties, applications, deactivation, and regeneration are reviewed. A comparison of catalysts used in vegetable oil and bio-oil upgrading is also carried out. Some suggestions for heterogeneous catalysts applied in vegetable oil upgrading to improve the yield and quality of hydrocarbon biofuel are provided for further research in the future.

    Biomass could be a source of the redox shuttles that have shown promise for operation as high potential, organic electrolytes for redox flow batteries. There is a sufficient quantity of biomass to satisfy the growing demand to buffer the episodic nature of renewably produced electricity. However, despite a century of effort, it is still not evident how to use existing information from organic electrochemistry to design the electrocatalysts or supporting electrolytes that will confer the required activity, selectivity and longevity. In this research, the use of a fiducial reaction to normalize reaction rates is shown to fail.

    In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) derived nano-porous carbon structures that were further hybridized with MnO2 were tested for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as cathode material for fuel cells. The prepared electrocatalyst was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX). Cyclic voltammetry was performed on these materials at different scan rates under dissolved oxygen in basic media (0.1 M KOH), inert and oxygen rich conditions to obtain their I–V curves. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Chronoamperometry was also performed to observe the materials’ impedance and stability. We report improved performance of hybridized catalyst for ORR based on cyclic voltammetry and EIS results, which show that it can be a potential candidate for fuel cell applications.

    This study describes the synthesis of delafossite, CuFeO2, as a primary photocatalytic material for hydrogen generation. A photoelectrode, CuFeO2/CuO/Cu, was prepared by combusting a Cu foil dipped in FeCl3 in ambient air. This photoelectrode showed excellent optical behavior for the hydrogen generation reaction from sewage water, producing 90 µmol/h of H2. The chemical structure was confirmed through XRD and XPS analyses, and the crystalline rhombohedral shape of CuFeO2 was confirmed using SEM and TEM analyses. With a bandgap of 1.35 ev, the prepared material displayed excellent optical properties. Electrochemical measurements for H2 gas generation were carried out using the CuFeO2/CuO/Cu photoelectrode, comparing the effect of light and dark and monochromatic wavelength light. The electrode exhibited significant enhancement in light compared to dark, with current density (Jph) values of −0.83 and −0.1 mA·cm−2, respectively. The monochromatic light also had a noticeable effect, with the Jph value increasing from −0.45 to −0.79 mA·cm−2 as the wavelength increased from 640 to 390 nm. This system is cheap and durable, making it a promising solution for hydrogen gas fuel generation in the industry.

    Ru-based eggshell-type catalysts, in which Ru is located at the outer region of the pellet, were prepared by the impregnation method, using spherically shaped γ-Al2O3 pellets for steam-methane reforming (SMR). Ru was only supported on the external region of the pellet because of the strong interaction between its precursor and the alumina pellet. The Ru precursor penetrated the inside of the pellet by adding nitric acid to the impregnation solution. The distribution and thickness of the Ru layer in the catalyst can be controlled using the HNO3/Ru molar ratio and contact time at the impregnation step. Among the catalysts, the graded eggshell-type catalyst showed the highest activity and long-term stability in the SMR reaction. In addition, in the daily startup and shutdown (DSS) operation, similar to the hydrogen production environment for domestic polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the graded eggshell-type catalyst showed high activity and stability after multiple cycles. Based on the experimental studies, it was confirmed that Ru-based catalysts are suitable for steam-methane reforming for PEMFC.

    Direct catalytic valorization of bioethanol to 1-butanol over different alumina supported catalysts was studied. Thirteen (13) heterogeneous catalysts were screened in search for the optimal material composition for direct one-pot conversion of ethanol to 1-butanol. For the most promising catalyst, a 25% ethanol conversion with 80% selectivity (among liquid carbon products) to 1-butanol could be reached at 250 °C. Additionally, the reaction kinetics and mechanisms were further investigated upon use of the most suitable catalyst candidate.

    Soot particles have been associated with respiratory diseases and cancer. To decrease these emissions, perovskite-mixed oxides have been proposed due to their thermal stability and redox surface properties. In this work, SrTiO3 doped with different amounts of Mn were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and tested for soot combustion. Results show that at low Mn content, structural distortion, and higher Oads/Olat ratio were observed which was attributed to the high content of Mn3+ in Ti sites. On the other hand, increasing the Mn content led to surface segregation of manganese oxide. All synthesized catalysts showed mesopores in the range of 32–47 nm. In the catalytic combustion of soot, the samples synthesized in this work lowered the combustion temperature by more than 100 °C compared with the uncatalyzed reaction. The sample doped with 1 wt % of Mn showed the best catalytic activity. The activation energy of these samples was also calculated, and the order of decreasing activation energy is as follows: uncatalyzed > Mn0 > Mn8 > Mn4 > Mn1. The best catalytic activity for Mn1 was attributed to its physicochemical properties and the mobility of the oxygen from the bulk to the surface at temperatures higher than 500 °C.

    The application of enzymes such as laccase and xylanase for the preparation of cellulose from lignocellulosic material is an option for those industries seeking to reduce the use of chlorine-containing bleach agents, thus minimizing the environmental impact of their processes. Mixed hydrolytic and oxidative enzyme systems have been well described in the context of biopulping, and thus provide good precedent regarding effectiveness, despite the susceptibility of xylanase to inactivation by laccase-generated oxidants. This paper examines the progress towards development of sequential and simultaneous mixed enzyme systems to accomplish delignification.
