Mosul Dam, a multipurpose dam located in Northern Iraq, is constructed on a dissolvable anhydrite, gypsum and limestone formation. To mitigate long-term impacts to the foundation, the dam designers opted for a structural solution. They incorporated into the design a grouting gallery for long-term maintenance grouting of the foundation cutoff grout curtain. In 2016, concerns with the risk posed by the deteriorating foundation resulted in the execution of the Mosul Dam emergency grouting and maintenance project. This paper illustrates how the international community proactively came together to prevent an incident of potential tragic proportions well before it could manifest itself. The emergency grouting work is an excellent example of Governments investing in preventing a disaster rather than investing in fixing a disaster. The paper presents the general approach adopted for the execution of the emergency project and discusses how the scope of work (SOW) evolved to address the myriad of requirements, including the training and transfer of information and equipment to the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources that could not have been foreseen during the scoping of the work. Additionally, this paper illustrates the success that can be achieved when team members share a strong commitment to cooperation and a determination to succeed.

With the vigorous development of logistics industry, more logistics talents are needed, and universities are the cradle of training talents. The logistics personnel training is far behind the logistics market demand, and those practice is weak during the process of the logistics professional teaching with the theory. These circumstances call for methodologies that can support the design of sustainable water management policies. Improved irrigation efficiency has been cited as an important way to adapt to climate change. This paper illustrates the potential of hydro-economic modeling for integrating the multiple dimensions of water resources, becoming a valuable tool in the empowerment of sustainable water management policies. The modelling framework is used also to analyze the impacts of climate change-induced drought on water uses in the Ait Ben Yacoub region (the East of Morocco). The evaluation of the conversion process from flurrow irrigation systems into drip irrigation by using the model showed that this policy has some positive effects on the agricultural gross margin and contributes to slightly moderating the impact of climate change on farmer’s incomes. Moreover, aoptimal efficiency of drip irrigation will inevitably result in a decrease in the volume of infiltrated water and therefore a very likely drawdown of the groundwater level. This result demonstrates the limitation of this policy and the necessity to accompany this irrigation system by measures of improvement of water supply. It concerns rainwater storage basins that should be covered by the polyethylene geo-membrane as example of promising measures.

The paper analyses the trends in renewable energy development, the dynamics and structure of electricity consumption and export in pre-epidemic and epidemic periods and identifies the main challenges to operational security of the United Energy System of Ukraine. The methodical approach to improve the methodology for estimation of country’s energy security level by considering the index of developing capacities for balancing the United Energy System of Ukraine is suggested. In addition, proposals have been made to reduce threats to the stable work of the United Energy System of Ukraine by putting into operation of energy storage capacities, promoting the development of мaneuvering renewable energy capacities, and implementation of other appropriate measures in this field.

This study evaluates typical faults occurring in demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) system and the impact on three output results: energy use, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. The methodologies used in this study were qualitative interviews of selected Norwegian Heating Ventilation Air Condition (HVAC) system experts and numerical modeling using the building performance simulation tool IDA ICE. The faults deduced from the qualitative interviews were modeled as the fault's different consequences to account for a large variety of faults. With a Norwegian school classroom as a case study, a local approach applying a one-at-a-time (OAT) simulation was used to perform an analysis of the extreme fault conditions that can occur. The results from the fault modeling demonstrated that greater attention is needed to avoid faults in the HVAC systems due to its impact on the indoor environment quality and energy efficiency of buildings.

Currently- more and more attention is focused on Power-to-Gas (P2G) installations- where excess electric power from the grid or various renewable energy sources is used to produce different kind of fuels- such as hydrogen. In such cases- generated fuels are treated as energy carriers which- in contrast to electricity- can be easy stored and transported. Currently- high temperature electrolysers- based solid oxide cells (SOC)- are treated as an interesting alternative for P2G systems. Solid oxide electrolysers (SOE) are characterized as highly efficient (~90%) and long-term stable technologies- which can be coupled with stationary power plants. In the current work- the solid oxide cell stack was operated in electrolysis mode in the endothermic conditions. Based on the gathered experimental data- the numerical model of the SOC stack was created and validated. The prepared and calibrated model was used for generation of stack performance maps for different operating conditions. The results allowed to determine optimal working conditions for the tested stack in the electrolysis mode- thus reducing potential costs of expensive experimental analysis and test campaigns.

However, the finite capacity of transmission corridor limits the delivery of remote renewables and leads to curtailment. Energy storage plays an important role in renewables accommodation and improving equipment utilization, and shared energy storage can magnify the benefits through a temporal and spatial complementary. This paper proposes an online dispatch approach of energy storage shared by multiple renewable plants. The uncertainty and non-anticipativity issue are addressed via a two-stage decision-making process. The day-ahead scheduling determines the allowable energy and power levels of shared energy storage; the real-time online dispatch decides the wait-and-see strategies of charging and discharging power based on a single-period optimization model constrained by the pre-scheduled bounds. The case study verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Aiming at the minimum operation cost of the integrated energy system in the park, a collaborative optimal scheduling model of the park's integrated energy system with the participation of comprehensive demand response of electric heating load is constructed. The simulation results show that, compared with the optimization results of traditional power demand response, the application of integrated demand response of electric heating load improves the flexibility of production of cogeneration units in the park, reduces the total energy consumption cost of demand side users and the operation cost of the system on the premise of ensuring the balance of supply and demand of the system, improves the energy utilization efficiency, and realizes the environmental protection and economy of the system function.

Pogrzeba; K. Prokopiuk; G. Żurek;Contamination of agricultural land in Poland by heavy metals is not a general problem but is limited to industrial areas. In regions of long history of industrial emission, of elevated levels of lead, cadmium, zinc and other ions during coal and ore mining and processing, as for example in Silesia, about 10 % of agricultural land may be characterized by exceeded maximum residue limits for Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn ions. Since the maintenance of agricultural areas in those regions is important from an ecological standpoint, the alternative farming activities are needed. Perennial grass biomass production for energy purposes is currently the best solution for majority of agricultural areas not suitable for food production in Poland. Along with increasing knowledge on separation and utilization of heavy metals (HM) during and after biomass processing, phytoremediation of polluted soils will become important and valuable. To detect the effect of soil HM ions concentration on growth and development of selected, tall growing and high biomass yielding perennial grass cultivars, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were registered. The elevated content of Pb, Cd and Zn ions in soil influenced on decrease of: minimal (Fo), maximal (Fm) and variable (Fv) fluorescence level as well as on total complementary area on a diagram of chlorophyll a fluorescence induction curve (Area). Based on detected parameters it was concluded, that the high level of HM ions in soils negatively affected the efficiency of photosynthesis. Therefore, plant growth, as well as development of generative shoots and finally the biomass yield were reduced in some cultivars. Among tested cultivars different reaction for HM ions in polluted soil were noted: from only slightly modified parameters of photosynthesis and unreduced yield (Elytrigia elongata cv. Bamar and Arrhenatherum elatius cv. Wiwena) to significantly reduced Fo, Fv, Fm and biomass yield (Bromus carinathus cv. Broma and Bromus inermis cv. Brudzyńska).

With the new round of power system reform and the deregulation of the power market, comprehensive and scientific evaluation of the development level of the smart grid plays an important role in achieving the overall goal of smart grid construction. This paper constructed a comprehensive evaluation index system from the aspects of safety and reliability, economy, intelligence level and sustainability of smart distribution network. Then the comprehensive evaluation model of AHPTOPSIS intelligent distribution network was established. Finally, an empirical study on the development level of smart distribution networks of four power companies in a province was carried out, and corresponding conclusions were drawn.

Mosul Dam, a multipurpose dam located in Northern Iraq, is constructed on a dissolvable anhydrite, gypsum and limestone formation. To mitigate long-term impacts to the foundation, the dam designers opted for a structural solution. They incorporated into the design a grouting gallery for long-term maintenance grouting of the foundation cutoff grout curtain. In 2016, concerns with the risk posed by the deteriorating foundation resulted in the execution of the Mosul Dam emergency grouting and maintenance project. This paper illustrates how the international community proactively came together to prevent an incident of potential tragic proportions well before it could manifest itself. The emergency grouting work is an excellent example of Governments investing in preventing a disaster rather than investing in fixing a disaster. The paper presents the general approach adopted for the execution of the emergency project and discusses how the scope of work (SOW) evolved to address the myriad of requirements, including the training and transfer of information and equipment to the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources that could not have been foreseen during the scoping of the work. Additionally, this paper illustrates the success that can be achieved when team members share a strong commitment to cooperation and a determination to succeed.

These circumstances call for methodologies that can support the design of sustainable water management policies. Improved irrigation efficiency has been cited as an important way to adapt to climate change. This paper illustrates the potential of hydro-economic modeling for integrating the multiple dimensions of water resources, becoming a valuable tool in the empowerment of sustainable water management policies. The modelling framework is used also to analyze the impacts of climate change-induced drought on water uses in the Ait Ben Yacoub region (the East of Morocco). The evaluation of the conversion process from flurrow irrigation systems into drip irrigation by using the model showed that this policy has some positive effects on the agricultural gross margin and contributes to slightly moderating the impact of climate change on farmer’s incomes. Moreover, aoptimal efficiency of drip irrigation will inevitably result in a decrease in the volume of infiltrated water and therefore a very likely drawdown of the groundwater level. This result demonstrates the limitation of this policy and the necessity to accompany this irrigation system by measures of improvement of water supply. It concerns rainwater storage basins that should be covered by the polyethylene geo-membrane as example of promising measures.

This study evaluates typical faults occurring in demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) system and the impact on three output results: energy use, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. The methodologies used in this study were qualitative interviews of selected Norwegian Heating Ventilation Air Condition (HVAC) system experts and numerical modeling using the building performance simulation tool IDA ICE. The faults deduced from the qualitative interviews were modeled as the fault's different consequences to account for a large variety of faults. With a Norwegian school classroom as a case study, a local approach applying a one-at-a-time (OAT) simulation was used to perform an analysis of the extreme fault conditions that can occur. The results from the fault modeling demonstrated that greater attention is needed to avoid faults in the HVAC systems due to its impact on the indoor environment quality and energy efficiency of buildings.

Currently- more and more attention is focused on Power-to-Gas (P2G) installations- where excess electric power from the grid or various renewable energy sources is used to produce different kind of fuels- such as hydrogen. In such cases- generated fuels are treated as energy carriers which- in contrast to electricity- can be easy stored and transported. Currently- high temperature electrolysers- based solid oxide cells (SOC)- are treated as an interesting alternative for P2G systems. Solid oxide electrolysers (SOE) are characterized as highly efficient (~90%) and long-term stable technologies- which can be coupled with stationary power plants. In the current work- the solid oxide cell stack was operated in electrolysis mode in the endothermic conditions. Based on the gathered experimental data- the numerical model of the SOC stack was created and validated. The prepared and calibrated model was used for generation of stack performance maps for different operating conditions. The results allowed to determine optimal working conditions for the tested stack in the electrolysis mode- thus reducing potential costs of expensive experimental analysis and test campaigns.

However, the finite capacity of transmission corridor limits the delivery of remote renewables and leads to curtailment. Energy storage plays an important role in renewables accommodation and improving equipment utilization, and shared energy storage can magnify the benefits through a temporal and spatial complementary. This paper proposes an online dispatch approach of energy storage shared by multiple renewable plants. The uncertainty and non-anticipativity issue are addressed via a two-stage decision-making process. The day-ahead scheduling determines the allowable energy and power levels of shared energy storage; the real-time online dispatch decides the wait-and-see strategies of charging and discharging power based on a single-period optimization model constrained by the pre-scheduled bounds. The case study verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Aiming at the minimum operation cost of the integrated energy system in the park, a collaborative optimal scheduling model of the park's integrated energy system with the participation of comprehensive demand response of electric heating load is constructed. The simulation results show that, compared with the optimization results of traditional power demand response, the application of integrated demand response of electric heating load improves the flexibility of production of cogeneration units in the park, reduces the total energy consumption cost of demand side users and the operation cost of the system on the premise of ensuring the balance of supply and demand of the system, improves the energy utilization efficiency, and realizes the environmental protection and economy of the system function.

Pogrzeba; K. Prokopiuk; G. Żurek;Contamination of agricultural land in Poland by heavy metals is not a general problem but is limited to industrial areas. In regions of long history of industrial emission, of elevated levels of lead, cadmium, zinc and other ions during coal and ore mining and processing, as for example in Silesia, about 10 % of agricultural land may be characterized by exceeded maximum residue limits for Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn ions. Since the maintenance of agricultural areas in those regions is important from an ecological standpoint, the alternative farming activities are needed. Perennial grass biomass production for energy purposes is currently the best solution for majority of agricultural areas not suitable for food production in Poland. Along with increasing knowledge on separation and utilization of heavy metals (HM) during and after biomass processing, phytoremediation of polluted soils will become important and valuable. To detect the effect of soil HM ions concentration on growth and development of selected, tall growing and high biomass yielding perennial grass cultivars, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were registered. The elevated content of Pb, Cd and Zn ions in soil influenced on decrease of: minimal (Fo), maximal (Fm) and variable (Fv) fluorescence level as well as on total complementary area on a diagram of chlorophyll a fluorescence induction curve (Area). Based on detected parameters it was concluded, that the high level of HM ions in soils negatively affected the efficiency of photosynthesis. Therefore, plant growth, as well as development of generative shoots and finally the biomass yield were reduced in some cultivars. Among tested cultivars different reaction for HM ions in polluted soil were noted: from only slightly modified parameters of photosynthesis and unreduced yield (Elytrigia elongata cv. Bamar and Arrhenatherum elatius cv. Wiwena) to significantly reduced Fo, Fv, Fm and biomass yield (Bromus carinathus cv. Broma and Bromus inermis cv. Brudzyńska).

With the new round of power system reform and the deregulation of the power market, comprehensive and scientific evaluation of the development level of the smart grid plays an important role in achieving the overall goal of smart grid construction. This paper constructed a comprehensive evaluation index system from the aspects of safety and reliability, economy, intelligence level and sustainability of smart distribution network. Then the comprehensive evaluation model of AHPTOPSIS intelligent distribution network was established. Finally, an empirical study on the development level of smart distribution networks of four power companies in a province was carried out, and corresponding conclusions were drawn.
