    Les montagnes abritent une part considérable de la population humaine. Environ un milliard de personnes vivent dans des zones montagneuses, qui abritent une riche diversité naturelle et socioculturelle. Aujourd'hui, de nombreuses personnes vivant dans des zones montagneuses du monde entier sont confrontées à des changements fondamentaux de leurs conditions de vie culturelles et économiques. Dans le même temps, les communautés de montagne ont défié les environnements difficiles dans le passé en s'adaptant aux conditions naturelles changeantes et en faisant preuve de niveaux remarquables de résilience. Dans cet article de synthèse, nous fournissons un aperçu complet de la littérature scientifique de langue anglaise sur les sujets liés à la résilience dans les zones de montagne sur la base d'une revue systématique de la base de données documentaire Scopus®. Nous proposons un point de départ structuré pour les interactions science-pratique et les activités concrètes basées sur l'action pour soutenir les moyens de subsistance et renforcer la résilience dans les zones de montagne. Nous suggérons que les lacunes existantes en matière de connaissances puissent être comblées en s'appuyant sur les connaissances locales et en co-créant des solutions avec les communautés. De cette façon, nous pouvons renforcer les capacités d'innovation et amortir activement l'impact des crises tout en soutenant la transformation délibérée vers la durabilité et la régénération pour améliorer davantage la résilience. Las montañas son el hogar de una parte considerable de la población humana. Alrededor de mil millones de personas viven en zonas montañosas, que albergan una rica diversidad natural y sociocultural. Hoy en día, muchas personas que viven en zonas montañosas de todo el mundo se enfrentan a cambios fundamentales en sus condiciones de vida culturales y económicas. Al mismo tiempo, las comunidades de montaña han desafiado los entornos hostiles en el pasado al adaptarse a las condiciones naturales cambiantes y mostrar niveles notables de resiliencia. En este documento de revisión, proporcionamos una descripción general completa de la literatura científica en inglés sobre temas relacionados con la resiliencia en áreas montañosas basada en una revisión sistemática de la base de datos de literatura Scopus®. Proponemos un punto de partida estructurado para las interacciones entre la ciencia y la práctica y actividades concretas basadas en la acción para apoyar los medios de vida y fortalecer la resiliencia en las zonas montañosas. Sugerimos que las brechas de conocimiento existentes se pueden abordar confiando en el conocimiento local y cocreando soluciones con las comunidades. De esta manera, podemos crear capacidad innovadora y amortiguar activamente el impacto de las crisis, al tiempo que apoyamos la transformación deliberada hacia la sostenibilidad y la regeneración para mejorar aún más la resiliencia. Mountains are home to a considerable share of the human population. Around a billion people live in mountainous areas, which harbor rich natural and sociocultural diversity. Today, many people living in mountainous areas worldwide face fundamental changes to their cultural and economic living conditions. At the same time, mountain communities have defied harsh environments in the past by adapting to changing natural conditions and showing remarkable levels of resilience. In this review paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of English-language scientific literature on resilience-related topics in mountain areas based on a systematic review of the Scopus® literature database. We propose a structured starting point for science–practice interactions and concrete action-based activities to support livelihoods and strengthen resilience in mountain areas. We suggest that existing knowledge gaps can be addressed by relying on local knowledge and cocreating solutions with communities. In this way, we can build innovative capacity and actively buffer against the impact of crises while supporting deliberate transformation toward sustainability and regeneration to further enhance resilience. الجبال هي موطن لنسبة كبيرة من السكان. يعيش حوالي مليار شخص في المناطق الجبلية، التي تضم تنوعًا طبيعيًا واجتماعيًا ثقافيًا غنيًا. اليوم، يواجه العديد من الأشخاص الذين يعيشون في المناطق الجبلية في جميع أنحاء العالم تغييرات جوهرية في ظروفهم المعيشية الثقافية والاقتصادية. وفي الوقت نفسه، تحدت المجتمعات الجبلية البيئات القاسية في الماضي من خلال التكيف مع الظروف الطبيعية المتغيرة وإظهار مستويات ملحوظة من المرونة. في ورقة المراجعة هذه، نقدم نظرة عامة شاملة على الأدبيات العلمية باللغة الإنجليزية حول الموضوعات المتعلقة بالمرونة في المناطق الجبلية بناءً على مراجعة منهجية لقاعدة بيانات أدبيات Scopus®. نقترح نقطة انطلاق منظمة للتفاعلات بين العلوم والممارسات والأنشطة العملية الملموسة لدعم سبل العيش وتعزيز القدرة على الصمود في المناطق الجبلية. نقترح أنه يمكن معالجة الفجوات المعرفية الحالية من خلال الاعتماد على المعرفة المحلية وإيجاد حلول مشتركة مع المجتمعات. وبهذه الطريقة، يمكننا بناء قدرات مبتكرة والوقاية بنشاط من تأثير الأزمات مع دعم التحول المتعمد نحو الاستدامة والتجديد لزيادة تعزيز المرونة.

    The association between trade, financial development, consumption of renewable energy, environmental quality, foreign direct investment, and economic growth is important for sustainable growth and environmental strategies. Hence, this research unveils this association in selected low- and high-income economies from 1996 to 2020. Unlike most of the previous literature, this study uses a composite environmental quality index, a composite financial development index, and a composite trade share measure to better represent environmental quality, financial development, and trade openness, respectively. The Continuously Updated Fully Modified and Continuously Updated Bias Corrected estimators along with the Dumitrescu Hurlin causality method are utilized to scrutinize the nature of the linkage between the modeled variables. The long-run estimation provided that consumption of renewable energy and environmental quality augment economic growth in high-income nations, while both these variables do not contribute to the economic growth in low-income countries. Financial development upsurges economic growth in high- as well as low-income nations. Interestingly, trade openness boosts economic growth in high-income countries, while in low-income countries, it obstructs economic growth. In causal linkage, the conservation hypothesis for low-income countries and the feedback hypothesis for high-income countries are confirmed in the context of consumption of renewable energy and economic growth association. The supply-leading hypothesis for low-income countries and the feedback hypothesis for high-income countries are supported regarding the financial development-economic growth nexus. Moreover, one-way causality from growth to environmental quality and bidirectional causality between environmental quality and economic growth for low- and high-income countries are established, respectively. Lastly, exhaustive environmental and economic policies are directed.

    Current study sheds the light on the financial development-energy nexus in 32 Belt and Road economies during 2000-2015. Financial development is proxied by domestic credit to private sector. We first examine the order of integration by employing five different panel unit-root tests. Further, we confirm long-term relationship between the variables by running Pedroni and Kao panel cointegration tests. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) regression reveal positive long-term relationship between financial development and energy use. Results of Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test fail to reveal causal relationship between financial development and energy in our sample.

    In this paper, we examine whether geopolitical risk influences environmental degradation, while controlling for non-renewable energy consumption, economic growth and trade openness, using a quarterly dataset from 1985Q1 to 2019Q4. The choice of India as a case study is based on a number of reasons. India is a developing country, which produces approximately 3.2% of global GDP. Also, India produces almost 17.7% of the world population. The country also emits about 6.8% of global carbon emissions, and according to the 2020 report of the consulting firm Eurasia, India is ranked fifth in terms of geopolitical risk. This study adds to the existing literature by using the quantile-on-quantile (QQR) regression to examine the effect of geopolitical risk on environmental degradation, as well as highlighting the implications of geopolitical risk on environmental sustainability. Based on empirical estimation, we find that geopolitical risk increases and decreases carbon emissions in India. That is, geopolitical risk increases environmental degradation at middle quantiles and decreases environmental degradation at lower and higher quantiles. In addition, we find that non-renewable energy consumption, economic growth and trade openness impede environmental quality in India. Thus, we are of the opinion that policymakers, when making policy decisions on environmental quality, should factor in geopolitical risk in two areas, mitigation and channel of escalation, among other policy suggestions.

    Authors: Umirova Nilufar;

    The article discusses the sorption of purification of water bodies from impurities using natural inorganic sorbents. The availability and low cost of minerals are an important economic advantage of their use for the purification of all types of water. The article describes a method of using an effective sorbent with high ion-exchange and sorption properties for purification of light oil products, for the purification of drinking or industrial water with a high content of heave technogenic metal ions and organic substances. Based on the data obtained, conclusions are drawn about the possibility of using the studied natural mineral sorbents for the extraction of impurities from waste and natural waters.

    Abstract Residual hemp (Cannabis sativa) hurd fibers obtained from hydrothermal, carbonate, and kraft treatments were the resources used to obtain lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNF) by using an ultra-fine friction grinder. The morphological, crystallinity, and chemical characteristics of the nanocellulose films were carried out using SEM, XRD, EDX and ToF-SIMS. Water barrier properties of the same were measured in terms of water contact angle, water vapor permeability (WVP) and water absorption. The barrier properties were found to be dependent not only on the lignin content and lignin distribution, but also on the film density and porous structure. LCNF films and coatings showed much higher water contact angle (WCA) (80°-102°) than films produced from the bleached CNF. WVP was found to be more dependent on the density of films than lignin content. Overall, LCNF-based films and coatings derived from hemp hurd residual fibers can contribute to a circular economy and sustainability.

The growth of consumption and inefficient use of power grids, fluctuations in supply and demand trends, the lack of critical analytics for successful management are just some of the problems that energy companies around the world are currently facing. Evaluating the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to promote the expansion of energy production in developing countries is one of the goals of this study. These problems are becoming common due to the growth of unauthorized connections to the power grid and the fact that a large amount of energy is not taken into account and is not paid for. Addressing the problems arising from frequent power outages and widespread lack of access to electricity in many developing countries is one of the key factors requiring special attention. The results show that AI and ML make a significant contribution in the field of predictive maintenance of turbines, optimization of energy consumption, network management, forecasting energy prices, as well as assessing energy demand and the efficiency of the construction of new generation homes. The study also examines what needs to be done in order for developing countries to be able to use artificial intelligence and machine learning in the energy sector.

    Authors: Chang, Lei; Saydaliev, Hayot Berk; Mohsin, Muhammad; Meo, Muhammad Saeed;

    Renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly popular since they are less expensive and more effective than conventional energy sources. New green energy technologies, such as wind energy, are mostly used in emerging regions to provide a sustainable and clean environment. This study investigates the effect of wind-based renewable energy consumption for environmental sustainability in top-10 wind energy consumer countries of European Union for the years 1991 to 2018. Ecological footprint is utilized as a proxy for the environmental sustainability. Most past studies have relied on panel data methods to produce common outcomes on the wind energy-clean environment nexus by overlooking the individual country-based evidences. On the other hand, this study adopts a unique method known as "Quantile-on-Quantile (QQ)", which can assess the time-series dependency in each country separately in order to provide global yet country-specific proof for the relationship between the variables. The empirical findings show that wind-based renewable energy consumption is a main cause of reducing ecological footprint at different quantiles of the data distribution in 8 out of 10 selected countries. The degree of the asymmetric relation, however, differs by country, needing specific awareness and attention on the part of the authorities when formulating the policies relating to wind energy and environmental sustainability. The world is facing the observable and direct impacts of climate change in the shape of extreme weather events, irregular precipitation, glacial melt, sea-level rise, an asymmetric average temperature trends, higher oceanic temperatures, damage to natural ecosystems, and biodiversity. In 2015, collective wisdom stirred the global community to agree upon two unprecedented milestones in recent human history—the Paris agreement and sustainable development goals (SDGs). The twin global agreements set a platform for collective efforts to secure socio-economic and climatic sustainability. Pakistan also joined the board to put forth policy interventions for the mitigation and adaption of climate change risks to maintain symmetry between the environmental quality and economic development. The government of Pakistan (GOP) formulated the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP (2012)) and passed the Pakistan Climate Change Act (PCCA (2017)) to provide an impetus for the implementation of the NCCP. Yet, an appropriate assessment and prioritization of the objectives of the NCCP are indispensable for productive and effective policies to achieve the targets. This study serves this purpose by prioritizing the climate change policy objectives (CCPOs) based on symmetric principles, i.e., energy, transport, urban and town planning, industry, and agriculture as criteria, with 17 sub-criteria in total. The fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) results show that the energy sector is the most pivotal while implementing the NCCP. Energy production is the most critical area that needs mitigation policy intervention for shifting the energy mix of the economy from high-carbon to low-carbon energy. The fuzzy AHP analysis further revealed the railway, population and urbanization, air pollution, crop growing practices and techniques as the most important related to transport, urban planning, industry, and agriculture sub-criteria, respectively. The fuzzy VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) analysis showed the ranking of the CCPOs from high to low through the integration of policies, institutional capacity building, water security, natural resource management, natural disaster management, environmental financial structure development, and social sector development. The findings of the present research would be helpful for experts and policymakers to re-examine the NCCP and put forth action plans to achieve sustainable climate and SDGs.

    An innovative type of development presupposes a continuous and purposeful process of searching, preparing and implementing innovations that make it possible to increase the efficiency of the functioning of social production, increase the degree of realization of the needs of society, and ensure an improvement in the life of the people. The international experience of solving the problem of poverty through innovative and technological development can be applied in Russia. On the basis of the materials from 77 constituent entities of the Russian Federation the authors determined that the provided regional action plans to achieve the national goal of halving the poverty level I were not sufficient and propose the additional list of measures to achieve this goal. The authors propose the methods for calculating the target value of the poverty level indicator (the level of the population with incomes below the subsistence level and the distribution of target persons across the constituent entity of the Russian Federation.

    Les montagnes abritent une part considérable de la population humaine. Environ un milliard de personnes vivent dans des zones montagneuses, qui abritent une riche diversité naturelle et socioculturelle. Aujourd'hui, de nombreuses personnes vivant dans des zones montagneuses du monde entier sont confrontées à des changements fondamentaux de leurs conditions de vie culturelles et économiques. Dans le même temps, les communautés de montagne ont défié les environnements difficiles dans le passé en s'adaptant aux conditions naturelles changeantes et en faisant preuve de niveaux remarquables de résilience. Dans cet article de synthèse, nous fournissons un aperçu complet de la littérature scientifique de langue anglaise sur les sujets liés à la résilience dans les zones de montagne sur la base d'une revue systématique de la base de données documentaire Scopus®. Nous proposons un point de départ structuré pour les interactions science-pratique et les activités concrètes basées sur l'action pour soutenir les moyens de subsistance et renforcer la résilience dans les zones de montagne. Nous suggérons que les lacunes existantes en matière de connaissances puissent être comblées en s'appuyant sur les connaissances locales et en co-créant des solutions avec les communautés. De cette façon, nous pouvons renforcer les capacités d'innovation et amortir activement l'impact des crises tout en soutenant la transformation délibérée vers la durabilité et la régénération pour améliorer davantage la résilience.

    Authors: Umirova Nilufar;
