Ventilated Façades integrating photovoltaic panels are a promising way to improve efficiency and the thermal-physical performances of buildings. Due the inherent intermittence of the non-programmable renewable energy sources, their increasing usage implies the use of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between power generation and the buildings' load demand. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermo-fluid dynamic performances of a prototype integrating a photovoltaic cell and a battery as a module of an active ventilated façade. Based on an experimental setup, a numerical study in steady state conditions of flow through the air cavity of the module has been carried out and implemented in a fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code. In order to assess the viability of the prototype, the calibrated model was lastly used to predict thermal performance of the prototype on different climate conditions supporting its further improvement.

CNR-ITAE is developing several hydrogen and fuel cell demonstration and research projects, each intended to be part of a larger strategy for hydrogen communities settling in small Sicilian islands. These projects involve vehicle design, hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and methane, as well as implementation strategies to develop a hydrogen and renewable energy economy. These zero emission lightweight vehicles feature regenerative braking and advanced power electronics to increase efficiency. Moreover, to achieve a very easy-to-use technology, a very simple interface between driver and the system is under development, including fault-recovery strategies and GPS positioning for car-rental fleets. Also marine applications have been included, with tests on PEFC applied on passenger ships and luxury yacht as power system for on-board loads. In marine application, it is under study also an electrolysis hydrogen generator system using seawater as hydrogen carrier. For stationary and automotive applications, the project includes a hydrogen refuelling station powered by renewable energy (wind or/and solar) and test on fuel processors fed with methane, in order to make the power generation self-sufficient, as well as to test the technology and increase public awareness toward clean energy sources. © 2008 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

In this paper, the integration of a small SOFC commercial system into the fuselage of a mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is presented. As a design constrain, the SOFC system has to be installed inside the UAV fuselage with the lowest possible offset, to reduce the volume and mass of the UAV. Due to the high operating temperature of the SOFC (800-1000 °C), the external temperature of the system is always about few hundred Celsius degrees. Due to this, malfunctioning of the SOFC system and hot spots on the fuselage shell can occur. For this reason, it is important to ensure a proper ventilation of the air volume inside the UAV fuselage. To deal with these issues, experimental and Computational Fluid dynamic studies were carried out to investigate for a correct SOFC system integration and operation in a confined environment. As a result, the optimal airflow for a safe operation of the SOFC system was determined and the behaviour of the temperature and air stream inside the fuselage was highlighted. In addition, NACA air intakes were designed on the basis on the experimental and numerical evidences, to provide a proper cooling of the SOFC system installed into the fuselage.

This paper presents an assessment of the levelized cost of clean hydrogen produced in Sicily, a region in Southern Italy particularly rich in renewable energy and where nearly 50% of Italy’s refineries are located, making a comparison between on-site production, that is, near the end users who will use the hydrogen, and centralized production, comparing the costs obtained by employing the two types of electrolyzers already commercially available. In the study for centralized production, the scale factor method was applied on the costs of electrolyzers, and the optimal transport modes were considered based on the distance and amount of hydrogen to be transported. The results obtained indicate higher prices for hydrogen produced locally (from about 7 €/kg to 10 €/kg) and lower prices (from 2.66 €/kg to 5.80 €/kg) for hydrogen produced in centralized plants due to economies of scale and higher conversion efficiencies. How-ever, meeting the demand for clean hydrogen at minimal cost requires hydrogen distribution pipelines to transport it from centralized production sites to users, which currently do not exist in Sicily, as well as a significant amount of renewable energy ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 TWh per year to cover only 16% of refineries’ hydrogen needs.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used for the power network stabilization since renewable energy sources are massively exploited. Since the operating load profile has a strong impact on the degradation of lithium-ion cells, dedicated experimental tests can provide important information in this regard. Herein, a commercial high power 18,650-type LiCoO2-LiNiCoMnO2/Graphite cell was aged according to a standardized endurance test from IEC 61,427-2), which profile is formulated to simulate the primary frequency regulation service. In addition, accelerated ageing was obtained by increasing the ambient temperature to 45 °C. Then, a deep investigation was performed to assess the main degradation phenomena induced by the operating profile. For this purpose, incremental capacity (IC) and differential voltage (DV) analysis as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed at different state of health (SoH) of the cell. Moreover, in order to estimate the effects induced by the frequency regulation profile in comparison to the degradation phenomena caused by a typical full charge/discharge profile, an identical cell was also aged under this condition. Experimental evidences indicate that the operation under primary frequency regulation is less detrimental for the cell by capacity loss point of view, while larger internal impedance increase was observed in comparison to the typical full charge/discharge profile. Finally, a thermal acceleration coefficient was extrapolated to describe the cell capacity loss at room temperature under frequency regulation profile.

A specific methodology for carrying out the task is still lacking. In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Electric flight is of increasing interest in order to reduce emissions of pollution and greenhouse gases in the aviation field in particular when the takeoff mass is low, as in the case of lightweight cargo transport or remotely controlled drones. The present investigation addresses two key issues in electric flight, namely the correct calculation of the endurance and the comparison between batteries and fuel cells, with a mission-based approach. As a test case, a light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) powered exclusively by a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell with a gaseous hydrogen tank was compared with the same aircraft powered by different kinds of Lithium batteries sized to match the energy stored in the hydrogen tank. The mass and the volume of each powertrain were calculated with literature data about existing technologies for propellers, motors, batteries and fuel cells. The empty mass and the wing area of the UAV were amended with the mass of the proposed powertrain to explore the range of application of the proposed technologies. To evaluate the efficiency of the whole powertrain a simulation software was used instead of considering only level flight. This software allowed an in-depth analysis on the efficiency of all sub-systems along the flight. The secondary demand of power for auxiliaries was taken into account along with the propulsive power. The main parameter for the comparison was the endurance but the takeoff performance, the volume of the powertrain and the environmental impact were also taken into account. The battery-based powertrain was found to be the most suitable for low-energy applications while the fuel cell performed better when increasing the amount of energy stored on board. The investigation allowed the estimation of the threshold above which the fuel cell based powertrain becomes the best solution for the UAV.

The exponential growth of distributed generation systems (mainly from solar energy through the use of photovoltaic) and the new release on energy markets of new generation technologies, with smaller dimension, are pushing towards rethinking energy systems. "Smart buildings" with the capacity to produce, store and manage flow of information's and energy will become the milestone of the future distribution networks (smart buildings to smart grid). The goal of this study is to evaluate the ecoprofile of 1 kWh of electricity, selected as a functional unit, generated by microcogenerator fuel cells as SOFC. The analysis was performed using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, which allows to compare different products and services with the same function and to identify the most significant impacts to focus on, in order to improve the energy and environmental performance of products / services examined. The study was conducted examining the entire life cycle of the analyzed devices, from cradle to grave, considering their operation phase through the definition of the potential expressed by the technology.

The concept of Positive Energy District is one of the main areas of research and extensive applications of the principles of the clean energy transition within the building sector. In the past years, the most widely accepted definitions have focused specifically on carbon neutrality, while several other aspects regarding all sustainability approaches (including environmental, social and economic perspective) were included qualitatively or to a lesser degree. This paper proposes a discussion on the state of the art of the sustainability assessment of Positive Energy Districts, by investigating environmental, social and economic sustainability applications. The three sustainability dimensions are investigated individually first, while discussing methodological insights, key performance indicators used and quantitative results, as well as in an integrated perspective. Finally, the paper describes research gaps and areas for further development on the topic.

Ventilated Façades integrating photovoltaic panels are a promising way to improve efficiency and the thermal-physical performances of buildings. Due the inherent intermittence of the non-programmable renewable energy sources, their increasing usage implies the use of energy storage systems to mitigate the mismatch between power generation and the buildings' load demand. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermo-fluid dynamic performances of a prototype integrating a photovoltaic cell and a battery as a module of an active ventilated façade. Based on an experimental setup, a numerical study in steady state conditions of flow through the air cavity of the module has been carried out and implemented in a fluid-dynamics Finite Volume code. In order to assess the viability of the prototype, the calibrated model was lastly used to predict thermal performance of the prototype on different climate conditions supporting its further improvement.

CNR-ITAE is developing several hydrogen and fuel cell demonstration and research projects, each intended to be part of a larger strategy for hydrogen communities settling in small Sicilian islands. These projects involve vehicle design, hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and methane, as well as implementation strategies to develop a hydrogen and renewable energy economy. These zero emission lightweight vehicles feature regenerative braking and advanced power electronics to increase efficiency. Moreover, to achieve a very easy-to-use technology, a very simple interface between driver and the system is under development, including fault-recovery strategies and GPS positioning for car-rental fleets. Also marine applications have been included, with tests on PEFC applied on passenger ships and luxury yacht as power system for on-board loads. In marine application, it is under study also an electrolysis hydrogen generator system using seawater as hydrogen carrier. For stationary and automotive applications, the project includes a hydrogen refuelling station powered by renewable energy (wind or/and solar) and test on fuel processors fed with methane, in order to make the power generation self-sufficient, as well as to test the technology and increase public awareness toward clean energy sources. © 2008 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

In this paper, the integration of a small SOFC commercial system into the fuselage of a mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is presented. As a design constrain, the SOFC system has to be installed inside the UAV fuselage with the lowest possible offset, to reduce the volume and mass of the UAV. Due to the high operating temperature of the SOFC (800-1000 °C), the external temperature of the system is always about few hundred Celsius degrees. Due to this, malfunctioning of the SOFC system and hot spots on the fuselage shell can occur. For this reason, it is important to ensure a proper ventilation of the air volume inside the UAV fuselage. To deal with these issues, experimental and Computational Fluid dynamic studies were carried out to investigate for a correct SOFC system integration and operation in a confined environment. As a result, the optimal airflow for a safe operation of the SOFC system was determined and the behaviour of the temperature and air stream inside the fuselage was highlighted. In addition, NACA air intakes were designed on the basis on the experimental and numerical evidences, to provide a proper cooling of the SOFC system installed into the fuselage.

This paper presents an assessment of the levelized cost of clean hydrogen produced in Sicily, a region in Southern Italy particularly rich in renewable energy and where nearly 50% of Italy’s refineries are located, making a comparison between on-site production, that is, near the end users who will use the hydrogen, and centralized production, comparing the costs obtained by employing the two types of electrolyzers already commercially available. In the study for centralized production, the scale factor method was applied on the costs of electrolyzers, and the optimal transport modes were considered based on the distance and amount of hydrogen to be transported. The results obtained indicate higher prices for hydrogen produced locally (from about 7 €/kg to 10 €/kg) and lower prices (from 2.66 €/kg to 5.80 €/kg) for hydrogen produced in centralized plants due to economies of scale and higher conversion efficiencies. How-ever, meeting the demand for clean hydrogen at minimal cost requires hydrogen distribution pipelines to transport it from centralized production sites to users, which currently do not exist in Sicily, as well as a significant amount of renewable energy ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 TWh per year to cover only 16% of refineries’ hydrogen needs.

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used for the power network stabilization since renewable energy sources are massively exploited. Since the operating load profile has a strong impact on the degradation of lithium-ion cells, dedicated experimental tests can provide important information in this regard. Herein, a commercial high power 18,650-type LiCoO2-LiNiCoMnO2/Graphite cell was aged according to a standardized endurance test from IEC 61,427-2), which profile is formulated to simulate the primary frequency regulation service. In addition, accelerated ageing was obtained by increasing the ambient temperature to 45 °C. Then, a deep investigation was performed to assess the main degradation phenomena induced by the operating profile. For this purpose, incremental capacity (IC) and differential voltage (DV) analysis as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed at different state of health (SoH) of the cell. Moreover, in order to estimate the effects induced by the frequency regulation profile in comparison to the degradation phenomena caused by a typical full charge/discharge profile, an identical cell was also aged under this condition. Experimental evidences indicate that the operation under primary frequency regulation is less detrimental for the cell by capacity loss point of view, while larger internal impedance increase was observed in comparison to the typical full charge/discharge profile. Finally, a thermal acceleration coefficient was extrapolated to describe the cell capacity loss at room temperature under frequency regulation profile.

A specific methodology for carrying out the task is still lacking. In this context, the present paper proposes a systematic framework for the design of passive and hybrid thermal management systems (TMSs) of Li-ion batteries. Thermal tests were carried out on Lithium-Titanate-Oxide cells under realistic operating conditions in a controlled environment to characterize the electrical and thermal behaviour. A thermofluid dynamics model of the battery was implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The experimentally validated model was used to evaluate the influence of different design and operating parameters (ambient temperature, charge/discharge current, phase change material thickness and melting temperature) using the Taguchi method (orthogonal arrays), and discussing inter-related effects of the studied parameters via interaction plots. Air temperature (45 °C) and/or discharge current (69–92 A) were identified as critical operating conditions beyond which thermal runaway issues occur. Starting from the optimal design conditions for a passive TMS, the same methodology was used to assess a hybrid PCM-liquid cooling system as an alternative configuration. The results indicate that, compared to the baseline case of natural cooling, the optimal designs of standalone PCM and hybrid cooling system led to a reduction in maximum cell temperature of 11 and 22 °C, respectively, showing the high potential of these TMSs.

Electric flight is of increasing interest in order to reduce emissions of pollution and greenhouse gases in the aviation field in particular when the takeoff mass is low, as in the case of lightweight cargo transport or remotely controlled drones. The present investigation addresses two key issues in electric flight, namely the correct calculation of the endurance and the comparison between batteries and fuel cells, with a mission-based approach. As a test case, a light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) powered exclusively by a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell with a gaseous hydrogen tank was compared with the same aircraft powered by different kinds of Lithium batteries sized to match the energy stored in the hydrogen tank. The mass and the volume of each powertrain were calculated with literature data about existing technologies for propellers, motors, batteries and fuel cells. The empty mass and the wing area of the UAV were amended with the mass of the proposed powertrain to explore the range of application of the proposed technologies. To evaluate the efficiency of the whole powertrain a simulation software was used instead of considering only level flight. This software allowed an in-depth analysis on the efficiency of all sub-systems along the flight. The secondary demand of power for auxiliaries was taken into account along with the propulsive power. The main parameter for the comparison was the endurance but the takeoff performance, the volume of the powertrain and the environmental impact were also taken into account. The battery-based powertrain was found to be the most suitable for low-energy applications while the fuel cell performed better when increasing the amount of energy stored on board. The investigation allowed the estimation of the threshold above which the fuel cell based powertrain becomes the best solution for the UAV.

The exponential growth of distributed generation systems (mainly from solar energy through the use of photovoltaic) and the new release on energy markets of new generation technologies, with smaller dimension, are pushing towards rethinking energy systems. "Smart buildings" with the capacity to produce, store and manage flow of information's and energy will become the milestone of the future distribution networks (smart buildings to smart grid). The goal of this study is to evaluate the ecoprofile of 1 kWh of electricity, selected as a functional unit, generated by microcogenerator fuel cells as SOFC. The analysis was performed using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, which allows to compare different products and services with the same function and to identify the most significant impacts to focus on, in order to improve the energy and environmental performance of products / services examined. The study was conducted examining the entire life cycle of the analyzed devices, from cradle to grave, considering their operation phase through the definition of the potential expressed by the technology.

The concept of Positive Energy District is one of the main areas of research and extensive applications of the principles of the clean energy transition within the building sector. In the past years, the most widely accepted definitions have focused specifically on carbon neutrality, while several other aspects regarding all sustainability approaches (including environmental, social and economic perspective) were included qualitatively or to a lesser degree. This paper proposes a discussion on the state of the art of the sustainability assessment of Positive Energy Districts, by investigating environmental, social and economic sustainability applications. The three sustainability dimensions are investigated individually first, while discussing methodological insights, key performance indicators used and quantitative results, as well as in an integrated perspective. Finally, the paper describes research gaps and areas for further development on the topic.
