This paper reported a compact solar thermal facade (STF) module with the internally extruded flow channel suiting for solar renovation concept in buildings. A few of impact factors were considered for the parametric study in order to optimize the STF's configuration for various applications through the validated simulation model. The overall research results are expected to be useful for further improvement in the thermal performance of solar renovation measures.

It identifies the basic role of such STF in the building performance simulation and analysis. A dedicated design strategy based on the BIM (building information modelling) concept for application of the proposed STF is then developed in details. This research work clarifies the necessary steps in ensuring that the environmental/economic factors and energy-efficiency strategies of the STF are integrated with the building design and analysis process at the early stage.

In order to decrease the energy consumption in an A/C system, a method to calculate the optimal tube row number of a direct expansion (DX) cooling coil for minimizing the entropy generation in the DX cooling which functioned as evaporator in the A/C system was developed. The optimal tube row numbers were determined based on the entropy generation minimization (EGM) approach. Parametric studies were conducted to demonstrate the application of the analytical calculation method. Optimal tube row number for different air mass flow rates, inlet air temperatures and sensible cooling loads were investigated. It was found that the optimal tube row number of a DX cooling coil was in the range of 5 - 9 under normal operating conditions. The optimal tube row number was less when the mass flow rate and inlet air temperature were increased. The tube row number increased when the sensible cooling load was increased. The exergy loss when using a non-optimal and optimal tube row numbers was compared to show the advantage of using the optimal tube row number. The decrease of exery loss ranged from around 24% to 70%. Therefore the new analytical method developed in this paper offers a good practice guide for the design of DX cooling coils for energy conservation.

The new STF concept is simple structure, low cost, and aesthetically appealing with easy installation but is expected to achieve the equivalent thermal efficiency as the conventional STFs. It delivered alternative design in terms of material, colour, texture, shape, size, architectural design, installation method, array connection, hypothetical system application, and solar coverage. Two common design variants i.e. (a) the STF cladding system and (b) the prefabricated STF wall system were described respectively for existing and new low-rise building typologies. Interaction of inclination, orientation, and insolation were discussed for the optimum STF position on the building. Four currently available methods for installation of such STF with buildings were summarized and three typical array connection methods were identified. The decentralized connection was recommended for different types of STF hot water systems. It is customary to design for a solar coverage of 50 to 60 percent for water heating in detached houses; in apartment buildings 30 to 40 percent are more commonly assumed. The concept design in this paper hereby illustrates the precedence for the hypothetical function by the creation of new ideas and also forms up the physical structure or operating principle for the investigations in near future.

It is widely considered for supplying hot water, space heating and/or space cooling in the domestic sector. The performance of solar assisted air source heat pumps can be evaluated in system level by parameters such as coefficient of performance, seasonal performance factor, energy consumption, solar fraction as well as initial and operating costs, and in component level by parameters such as efficiencies of solar collection and thermal energy storage. Their performances are affected by many factors such as system configuration, components size, working fluid, working conditions and weather conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the recent advances in solar assisted air source heat pump for the domestic sector in terms of system configuration, solar collectors, thermal energy storage, defrosting method and the perspective areas of further investigations. The results of this review confirm that research is still required to improve the performance of such a combined system and reduce initial cost compared with existing heating systems based on hydrocarbon combustion. The information presented in this paper is beneficial to the researchers, small and medium-sized enterprises supplying renewable energy system technologies, heating engineers and service workers, energy policy and decision makers, environmental activists and communities.

Solar assisted air source heat pumps, integrating solar collector, thermal energy storage tank and heat pump, offers a promising alternative application under the UK weather conditions. Literature review shows that investigations of solar assisted air source heat pumps in the regions like the UK are still insufficient. The serial, parallel and dual-source indirect expansion solar assisted air source heat pumps are modelled and simulated under the weather conditions in London using TRNSYS to investigate the operation performance over a typical year. These three heat pumps are applied to provide space heating and hot water of 300 L per day for a typical single-family house. The simulation results show comparisons of the three systems. The serial type heat pump shows the highest seasonal performance factor of 5.5, but requiring the largest sizes of the solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. The dual-source and parallel type heat pumps show slightly lower seasonal performance factors of 4.4 and 4.5, respectively, requiring smaller sizes of solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. Furthermore, the results show that the air source part contributes to an important proportion of the heat provision and stable operation of the systems. The yearly seasonal performance factor higher than 4.4 achievable by the three heat pumps suggests that they are potentially applied in the regions with relatively lower solar irradiance. The economic analyses indicate that the parallel and dual-source type heat pumps provide good alternatives to replacing the gas-boiler heating system.

PCA was used to identify the buildings greatly affecting district load management. The features of electric loads of heating on a university campus were analyzed. Building type and operation mode greatly affect the load level and volatility.\ud \ud Abstract\ud Accurate grasp of district power demand is of great significance to both sizing of district power supply and its operation optimization. In this study, an index system has been established and visualized through a Geographic Information System, for revealing both temporal and spatial characteristics of district power loads caused by heating/cooling systems, including load level and fluctuation characteristics, spatial distribution of electric loads, and load coupling relationships between individual buildings and the district. Principal component analysis was applied to identify the buildings with significant impact on district load management. Using this method, the spatial-temporal characteristics of electric loads caused by heating in one university campus in China were analyzed. The results showed that building type and the operation modes had great effects on the level and volatility of the district electric load caused by heating. Buildings with high load levels and strong coupling with the peak district electric load, such as academic buildings, often had a major impact on the power demand of the district. Therefore, they were considered as key targets for energy-saving renovation and operation optimization. Buildings with large load fluctuation, such as teaching buildings, could contribute to the peak load shaving by adjusting the heating systems’ operation.

These two elements directly influence the cooling effort of PV layers and as a result, the related electrical/thermal/overall efficiency. This paper conducts a critical review on the essential thermal absorbers and their integration methods for the currently-available PV modules for the purpose of producing the combined PV/T modules. A brief overview of different PV/T technologies is initially summarized, including aspects of their structure, efficiencies, thermal governing expressions and their applications. Seven different types of thermal absorbers and four corresponding integration methods are subsequently discussed and summarized in terms of their advantages/disadvantages and the associated application for various PV/T modules. Compared to traditional thermal absorbers, such as sheet-and-tube structure, rectangular tunnel with or without fins/grooves and flat-plate tube, these four types, i.e. micro-channel heat pipe array/heat mat, extruded heat exchanger, roll-bond heat exchanger and cotton wick structure, are promising due to the significant enhancement in terms of efficiency, structure, weight, and cost etc. The appropriate or suitable integration method varies in different cases, i.e. the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) based lamination method seems the best option for integration of PV layer with thermal absorber when compared with other conventional methods, such as direct contact, thermal adhesive and mechanical fixing. Finally, suggestions for further research topics are proposed from five aspects. The overall research results would provide useful information for the assistance of further development of solar PV/T modules with high feasibility for widespread application in energy supply even at district or city-level in the near future.

The whole set of technical evaluation and economic analysis was investigated through simulation of a reference DOE residential building model in IES-VE software and a dedicated dynamic business model consisting of several critical financial indexes. In order to figure out the cost effectiveness of the STF concept, research work consisted of: (1) exploring the overall feasibility, i.e. energy load, energy savings, operational cost and environmental benefits, and (2) investigating the financial outputs for investment decisions within three different purchase methods. This paper presents a multidisciplinary research method that is expected to be beneficial and supportive for the strategic decision at the early design stage and it also offers a different angle to assess the economic performance of the STF application.

This research work clarifies the necessary steps in ensuring that the environmental/economic factors and energy-efficiency strategies of the STF are integrated with the building design and analysis process at the early stage.

In order to decrease the energy consumption in an A/C system, a method to calculate the optimal tube row number of a direct expansion (DX) cooling coil for minimizing the entropy generation in the DX cooling which functioned as evaporator in the A/C system was developed. The optimal tube row numbers were determined based on the entropy generation minimization (EGM) approach. Parametric studies were conducted to demonstrate the application of the analytical calculation method. Optimal tube row number for different air mass flow rates, inlet air temperatures and sensible cooling loads were investigated. It was found that the optimal tube row number of a DX cooling coil was in the range of 5 - 9 under normal operating conditions. The optimal tube row number was less when the mass flow rate and inlet air temperature were increased. The tube row number increased when the sensible cooling load was increased. The exergy loss when using a non-optimal and optimal tube row numbers was compared to show the advantage of using the optimal tube row number. The decrease of exery loss ranged from around 24% to 70%. Therefore the new analytical method developed in this paper offers a good practice guide for the design of DX cooling coils for energy conservation.

The new STF concept is simple structure, low cost, and aesthetically appealing with easy installation but is expected to achieve the equivalent thermal efficiency as the conventional STFs. It delivered alternative design in terms of material, colour, texture, shape, size, architectural design, installation method, array connection, hypothetical system application, and solar coverage. Two common design variants i.e. (a) the STF cladding system and (b) the prefabricated STF wall system were described respectively for existing and new low-rise building typologies. Interaction of inclination, orientation, and insolation were discussed for the optimum STF position on the building. Four currently available methods for installation of such STF with buildings were summarized and three typical array connection methods were identified. The decentralized connection was recommended for different types of STF hot water systems. It is customary to design for a solar coverage of 50 to 60 percent for water heating in detached houses; in apartment buildings 30 to 40 percent are more commonly assumed. The concept design in this paper hereby illustrates the precedence for the hypothetical function by the creation of new ideas and also forms up the physical structure or operating principle for the investigations in near future.

It is widely considered for supplying hot water, space heating and/or space cooling in the domestic sector. The performance of solar assisted air source heat pumps can be evaluated in system level by parameters such as coefficient of performance, seasonal performance factor, energy consumption, solar fraction as well as initial and operating costs, and in component level by parameters such as efficiencies of solar collection and thermal energy storage. Their performances are affected by many factors such as system configuration, components size, working fluid, working conditions and weather conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the recent advances in solar assisted air source heat pump for the domestic sector in terms of system configuration, solar collectors, thermal energy storage, defrosting method and the perspective areas of further investigations. The results of this review confirm that research is still required to improve the performance of such a combined system and reduce initial cost compared with existing heating systems based on hydrocarbon combustion. The information presented in this paper is beneficial to the researchers, small and medium-sized enterprises supplying renewable energy system technologies, heating engineers and service workers, energy policy and decision makers, environmental activists and communities.

Solar assisted air source heat pumps, integrating solar collector, thermal energy storage tank and heat pump, offers a promising alternative application under the UK weather conditions. Literature review shows that investigations of solar assisted air source heat pumps in the regions like the UK are still insufficient. The serial, parallel and dual-source indirect expansion solar assisted air source heat pumps are modelled and simulated under the weather conditions in London using TRNSYS to investigate the operation performance over a typical year. These three heat pumps are applied to provide space heating and hot water of 300 L per day for a typical single-family house. The simulation results show comparisons of the three systems. The serial type heat pump shows the highest seasonal performance factor of 5.5, but requiring the largest sizes of the solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. The dual-source and parallel type heat pumps show slightly lower seasonal performance factors of 4.4 and 4.5, respectively, requiring smaller sizes of solar collector and thermal energy storage tank. Furthermore, the results show that the air source part contributes to an important proportion of the heat provision and stable operation of the systems. The yearly seasonal performance factor higher than 4.4 achievable by the three heat pumps suggests that they are potentially applied in the regions with relatively lower solar irradiance. The economic analyses indicate that the parallel and dual-source type heat pumps provide good alternatives to replacing the gas-boiler heating system.

Building type and operation mode greatly affect the load level and volatility.\ud \ud Abstract\ud Accurate grasp of district power demand is of great significance to both sizing of district power supply and its operation optimization. In this study, an index system has been established and visualized through a Geographic Information System, for revealing both temporal and spatial characteristics of district power loads caused by heating/cooling systems, including load level and fluctuation characteristics, spatial distribution of electric loads, and load coupling relationships between individual buildings and the district. Principal component analysis was applied to identify the buildings with significant impact on district load management. Using this method, the spatial-temporal characteristics of electric loads caused by heating in one university campus in China were analyzed. The results showed that building type and the operation modes had great effects on the level and volatility of the district electric load caused by heating. Buildings with high load levels and strong coupling with the peak district electric load, such as academic buildings, often had a major impact on the power demand of the district. Therefore, they were considered as key targets for energy-saving renovation and operation optimization. Buildings with large load fluctuation, such as teaching buildings, could contribute to the peak load shaving by adjusting the heating systems’ operation.

These two elements directly influence the cooling effort of PV layers and as a result, the related electrical/thermal/overall efficiency. This paper conducts a critical review on the essential thermal absorbers and their integration methods for the currently-available PV modules for the purpose of producing the combined PV/T modules. A brief overview of different PV/T technologies is initially summarized, including aspects of their structure, efficiencies, thermal governing expressions and their applications. Seven different types of thermal absorbers and four corresponding integration methods are subsequently discussed and summarized in terms of their advantages/disadvantages and the associated application for various PV/T modules. Compared to traditional thermal absorbers, such as sheet-and-tube structure, rectangular tunnel with or without fins/grooves and flat-plate tube, these four types, i.e. micro-channel heat pipe array/heat mat, extruded heat exchanger, roll-bond heat exchanger and cotton wick structure, are promising due to the significant enhancement in terms of efficiency, structure, weight, and cost etc. The appropriate or suitable integration method varies in different cases, i.e. the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) based lamination method seems the best option for integration of PV layer with thermal absorber when compared with other conventional methods, such as direct contact, thermal adhesive and mechanical fixing. Finally, suggestions for further research topics are proposed from five aspects. The overall research results would provide useful information for the assistance of further development of solar PV/T modules with high feasibility for widespread application in energy supply even at district or city-level in the near future.

The whole set of technical evaluation and economic analysis was investigated through simulation of a reference DOE residential building model in IES-VE software and a dedicated dynamic business model consisting of several critical financial indexes. In order to figure out the cost effectiveness of the STF concept, research work consisted of: (1) exploring the overall feasibility, i.e. energy load, energy savings, operational cost and environmental benefits, and (2) investigating the financial outputs for investment decisions within three different purchase methods. This paper presents a multidisciplinary research method that is expected to be beneficial and supportive for the strategic decision at the early design stage and it also offers a different angle to assess the economic performance of the STF application.
