Identifying the incidence of free-ridership is significant to a range of issues relevant to program evaluation, including the calculation of net program benefits and more general assessments of political acceptability. Estimates of free-ridership in the area of energy policy frequently rely on ex-post surveys that ask program participants whether they would have behaved differently in the absence of program support. The present paper proposes an ex-ante approach to the calculation of the free-rider share using revealed preference data on home renovations from Germany's residential sector. We employ a discrete-choice model to simulate the effect of grants on renovation choices, the output from which is used to assess the extent of free-ridership under a contemporary subsidy program. Aside from its simplicity, a key advantage of the approach is that it bestows policymakers with an estimate of free-ridership prior to program implementation.

Despite the potential of free-ridership to seriously undermine the economic efficiency of a program intervention, for instance to foster energy efficiency, the issue remains largely absent from contemporary environmental and energy policy discussions in Europe. One reason for this neglect is the inherent difficulty of assessing which households would have undertaken the energy conservation activity even without the program. This paper proposes a procedure to calculate the free-rider share using revealed preference data on home renovations from Germany’s residential sector.We employ a discrete-choice model to analyze the effect of grants on renovation choices, the output from which is used to assess the extent of free-ridership under a subsidy program very akin to an implemented grants program in Germany. Our empirical results suggest only very moderate energy savings induced by the program, making free-riding a problem of outstanding importance.

Abstract This paper presents a new approach to heat exchanger network (HEN) design making extensive use of randomization techniques. It is exceedingly simple to implement and gives new insight into the hardness and the cost landscape underlying a given problem. At the same time, the results from our algorithm may be used as good initial solutions required by most non-linear optimization problem formulations of HEN design. Practical networks involve trade-off between a number of factors, all of which are difficult to incorporate in a single design methodology. Our approach is blind to any design heuristic and generates a sufficiently large number of networks that can be further evaluated to pick up the most suitable network depending on specific design requirements. However, the current version of the algorithm is limited to HEN synthesis problems that can be solved without stream splitting. We have experimented with the three standard literature problems and obtained results that compare well with the previously published results, which justify further research in this direction.

The modelling of the geometrical structure of a special kind of concrete is discussed. It is a matter of self-flowing refractory castables with spherical grains. The system of hard spheres is compared to several well-established models of spatial statistics and statistical physics as well as to a model used by concrete engineers. It turns out that the structure can be well described by the latter model and a further newly developed model, which is similar to a marked Gibbs process. The result is based on the comparison of common summary statistics like the pair correlation function and the spherical contact distribution function.

This paper addresses the problem of overloading in power distribution networks, which stems from the transmission systems being incapable of delivering power from source to consumers during peak hours. This causes frequent power-outages (or blackouts), requiring the consumers to rely on alternative energy sources, e.g., Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems with batteries to meet their essential needs. This paper proposes a demand response (DR) framework to eliminate the problem of network overloading. The flexibility in the consumption of batteries and air conditioners (ACs) is exploited in the proposed framework. The operation of ACs is manipulated while maintaining occupant comfort, and the power flow from mains and batteries is scheduled based on an ensemble of demand forecast avoiding network overloading and consequent power-outages. The problem is modeled in an optimal control setting and solved using a stochastic model predictive control strategy, and a computationally effective method is also proposed to efficiently solve the underlying optimization problems. Towards the end, simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed framework to avoid overloading.

Fossil fuel consumption has triggered worries about energy security and climate change; this has promoted hydrogen as a viable option to aid in decarbonizing global energy systems. Hydrogen could substitute for fossil fuels in the future due to the economic, political, and environmental concerns related to energy production using fossil fuels. However, currently, the majority of hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, which is not a renewable source of energy. It is therefore crucial to increase the efforts to produce hydrogen from renewable sources, rather from the existing fossil-based approaches. Thus, this study investigates how renewable energy can accelerate the production of hydrogen fuel in the future under three hydrogen economy-related energy regimes, including nuclear restrictions, hydrogen, and city gas blending, and in the scenarios which consider the geographic distribution of carbon reduction targets. A random effects regression model has been utilized, employing panel data from a global energy system which optimizes for cost and carbon targets. The results of this study demonstrate that an increase in renewable energy sources has the potential to significantly accelerate the growth of future hydrogen production under all the considered policy regimes. The policy implications of this paper suggest that promoting renewable energy investments in line with a fairer allocation of carbon reduction efforts will help to ensure a future hydrogen economy which engenders a sustainable, low carbon society.

This paper provides two tests that check for spatial interdependence such as wake effects. Those effects are suspected to have a negative influence on wind power production. After that, we introduce a new modeling approach that is based on the generalized wind power prediction tool (GWPPT) and therefore respect both-sided censoring of the data. The new model makes use of a spatial lag model (SLM) specification and allows for random effects in the panel data. Finally, we provide a short empirical study that compares the forecasting accuracy of our model to the established models WPPT, GWPPT, and the naive persistence predictor. We show that our new model provides significantly better forecasts than the established models.

The harvester consists of a clamped–clamped beam with a stiff plate in the middle to realize the impact electrification process when subjected to external vibrations. The harvester uses stiffening in the clamped–clamped beam introduced by the impact between two triboelectric layers to increase the frequency bandwidth. A piecewise theoretical model is used to model the harvester for two scenarios of motions, before and after impact. The harvester is tested experimentally under different harmonic excitation to validate the theoretical model. The outcomes show a good agreement between both experimental and theoretical results. Higher bandwidth is achieved at a lower gap separation distance. The operating bandwidth of the energy harvester increased from 4.4 Hz to 17.8 Hz with an RMS output voltage level of 7 V and an output power density of 7mW∕m2at 1.4 g excitation level and 100μmgap. The model is extended and validated experimentally under random excitation. The simulated power spectral densities are in good agreement with the experimental results.

However, the mechanism by which the DAS algorithm simultaneously achieves competitive accuracy and fast execution speed, has not been elucidated by a theoretical derivation. We analyze the DAS algorithm by comparing it with a message passing algorithm. Graphical models, inference methods, and energy-minimization frameworks are compared between DAS and message passing algorithms. Moreover, the performances of DAS and other message passing methods [sum-product belief propagation (BP), max-product BP, and tree-reweighted message passing] are experimentally compared.

Identifying the incidence of free-ridership is significant to a range of issues relevant to program evaluation, including the calculation of net program benefits and more general assessments of political acceptability. Estimates of free-ridership in the area of energy policy frequently rely on ex-post surveys that ask program participants whether they would have behaved differently in the absence of program support. The present paper proposes an ex-ante approach to the calculation of the free-rider share using revealed preference data on home renovations from Germany's residential sector. We employ a discrete-choice model to simulate the effect of grants on renovation choices, the output from which is used to assess the extent of free-ridership under a contemporary subsidy program. Aside from its simplicity, a key advantage of the approach is that it bestows policymakers with an estimate of free-ridership prior to program implementation.

One reason for this neglect is the inherent difficulty of assessing which households would have undertaken the energy conservation activity even without the program. This paper proposes a procedure to calculate the free-rider share using revealed preference data on home renovations from Germany’s residential sector.We employ a discrete-choice model to analyze the effect of grants on renovation choices, the output from which is used to assess the extent of free-ridership under a subsidy program very akin to an implemented grants program in Germany. Our empirical results suggest only very moderate energy savings induced by the program, making free-riding a problem of outstanding importance.

Abstract This paper presents a new approach to heat exchanger network (HEN) design making extensive use of randomization techniques. It is exceedingly simple to implement and gives new insight into the hardness and the cost landscape underlying a given problem. At the same time, the results from our algorithm may be used as good initial solutions required by most non-linear optimization problem formulations of HEN design. Practical networks involve trade-off between a number of factors, all of which are difficult to incorporate in a single design methodology. Our approach is blind to any design heuristic and generates a sufficiently large number of networks that can be further evaluated to pick up the most suitable network depending on specific design requirements. However, the current version of the algorithm is limited to HEN synthesis problems that can be solved without stream splitting. We have experimented with the three standard literature problems and obtained results that compare well with the previously published results, which justify further research in this direction.

The modelling of the geometrical structure of a special kind of concrete is discussed. It is a matter of self-flowing refractory castables with spherical grains. The system of hard spheres is compared to several well-established models of spatial statistics and statistical physics as well as to a model used by concrete engineers. It turns out that the structure can be well described by the latter model and a further newly developed model, which is similar to a marked Gibbs process. The result is based on the comparison of common summary statistics like the pair correlation function and the spherical contact distribution function.

This paper addresses the problem of overloading in power distribution networks, which stems from the transmission systems being incapable of delivering power from source to consumers during peak hours. This causes frequent power-outages (or blackouts), requiring the consumers to rely on alternative energy sources, e.g., Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems with batteries to meet their essential needs. This paper proposes a demand response (DR) framework to eliminate the problem of network overloading. The flexibility in the consumption of batteries and air conditioners (ACs) is exploited in the proposed framework. The operation of ACs is manipulated while maintaining occupant comfort, and the power flow from mains and batteries is scheduled based on an ensemble of demand forecast avoiding network overloading and consequent power-outages. The problem is modeled in an optimal control setting and solved using a stochastic model predictive control strategy, and a computationally effective method is also proposed to efficiently solve the underlying optimization problems. Towards the end, simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed framework to avoid overloading.

Fossil fuel consumption has triggered worries about energy security and climate change; this has promoted hydrogen as a viable option to aid in decarbonizing global energy systems. Hydrogen could substitute for fossil fuels in the future due to the economic, political, and environmental concerns related to energy production using fossil fuels. However, currently, the majority of hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, which is not a renewable source of energy. It is therefore crucial to increase the efforts to produce hydrogen from renewable sources, rather from the existing fossil-based approaches. Thus, this study investigates how renewable energy can accelerate the production of hydrogen fuel in the future under three hydrogen economy-related energy regimes, including nuclear restrictions, hydrogen, and city gas blending, and in the scenarios which consider the geographic distribution of carbon reduction targets. A random effects regression model has been utilized, employing panel data from a global energy system which optimizes for cost and carbon targets. The results of this study demonstrate that an increase in renewable energy sources has the potential to significantly accelerate the growth of future hydrogen production under all the considered policy regimes. The policy implications of this paper suggest that promoting renewable energy investments in line with a fairer allocation of carbon reduction efforts will help to ensure a future hydrogen economy which engenders a sustainable, low carbon society.

This paper provides two tests that check for spatial interdependence such as wake effects. Those effects are suspected to have a negative influence on wind power production. After that, we introduce a new modeling approach that is based on the generalized wind power prediction tool (GWPPT) and therefore respect both-sided censoring of the data. The new model makes use of a spatial lag model (SLM) specification and allows for random effects in the panel data. Finally, we provide a short empirical study that compares the forecasting accuracy of our model to the established models WPPT, GWPPT, and the naive persistence predictor. We show that our new model provides significantly better forecasts than the established models.

The harvester consists of a clamped–clamped beam with a stiff plate in the middle to realize the impact electrification process when subjected to external vibrations. The harvester uses stiffening in the clamped–clamped beam introduced by the impact between two triboelectric layers to increase the frequency bandwidth. A piecewise theoretical model is used to model the harvester for two scenarios of motions, before and after impact. The harvester is tested experimentally under different harmonic excitation to validate the theoretical model. The outcomes show a good agreement between both experimental and theoretical results. Higher bandwidth is achieved at a lower gap separation distance. The operating bandwidth of the energy harvester increased from 4.4 Hz to 17.8 Hz with an RMS output voltage level of 7 V and an output power density of 7mW∕m2at 1.4 g excitation level and 100μmgap. The model is extended and validated experimentally under random excitation. The simulated power spectral densities are in good agreement with the experimental results.

However, the mechanism by which the DAS algorithm simultaneously achieves competitive accuracy and fast execution speed, has not been elucidated by a theoretical derivation. We analyze the DAS algorithm by comparing it with a message passing algorithm. Graphical models, inference methods, and energy-minimization frameworks are compared between DAS and message passing algorithms. Moreover, the performances of DAS and other message passing methods [sum-product belief propagation (BP), max-product BP, and tree-reweighted message passing] are experimentally compared.
