description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article JapanPublisher:日本植物工場学会 Authors: NISHIMURA, Masao; KOZAI, Toyoki; KUBOTA, Chieri; CHUN, Changhoo;The energy balance of a commercial scale closed transplant production system was investigated to estimate the energy consumed by the system and to find the optimal strategies of environmental control of the system. The system consisted of a transportation/irrigation machine, four basic modules and thermal insulation wall. The basic module consisted of shelves, lamps, air conditioners, fans and a humidifier. Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. cv. Beniazuma) transplants were grown for 15 days under conditions of 140/200/320μmol m^s^ (1-5/6-11/12-15 days after planting, respectively) photosynthetic photon flux with 16h d^ photoperiod, 28℃ air temperature, 74% relative humidity and 990μmol mol^ CO_2 concentration in the system. The total electric energy consumed by the system during 15 days when four basic modules operated was 764 MJ m^. The system's lamps, air conditioners, fans, humidifiers and transportation/irrigation machine consumed 78.4%, 10.6%, 7.1%, 0.7% and 3.2% of the total electric energy consumed by the system, respectively. The electric energy cost per transplant, depending on the seasonal electric energy charge, was 2.5-2.6 Yen. The ratio of net chemical energy fixed by transplants to the total electric energy consumed by the system was estimated at 0.006 when the transplants grew normally. The coefficient of performance of the system was 8.0 and about 2 times higher than that described in the catalog of the air conditioner. The maximum percentage of heat energy transported by ventilation and penetrated through walls and floor to the cooling load of the system was estimated at 0.18% in summer and -25% in winter.

Retrofits were conducted from March to June 2013. Detailed end-use electricity consumption is being monitored for two years, spanning pre- and post-retrofit. This paper summarizes the end use energy savings and economic evaluation results from lighting and smart plug measures. The lighting retrofit included changing incandescent lighting to CFL or LED. Results from pre-retrofit monitoring revealed that the lighting and plug loads constituted 22% of total site electricity consumption (7.7 kWh per day). A short-term analysis of the study homes, for which 56% of bulbs were changed-out, showed a seasonally adjusted reduction to total site power of 1.2 kWh per day. Home devices such as computers, printers, and gaming centers continue to draw power when unused but left in their low power modes. Advanced Power Strips (APS) can reduce this wasted energy. To study their potential savings, entertainment center energy use was submetered in all homes. APSs were intended to be installed in those with low power loads of at least 10 watts, but only nine had both homeowner acceptance and large enough power losses. Often equipment above the energy loss threshold could not be shut down (e.g. remote printers, DVRs) without functionality loss. Average low power mode draw for the final dataset was 15 watts and monitored data showed the APS saved between 0.2 and 0.7 kWh per day over preretrofit.

The system consisted of a transportation/irrigation machine, four basic modules and thermal insulation wall. The basic module consisted of shelves, lamps, air conditioners, fans and a humidifier. Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. cv. Beniazuma) transplants were grown for 15 days under conditions of 140/200/320μmol m^s^ (1-5/6-11/12-15 days after planting, respectively) photosynthetic photon flux with 16h d^ photoperiod, 28℃ air temperature, 74% relative humidity and 990μmol mol^ CO_2 concentration in the system. The total electric energy consumed by the system during 15 days when four basic modules operated was 764 MJ m^. The system's lamps, air conditioners, fans, humidifiers and transportation/irrigation machine consumed 78.4%, 10.6%, 7.1%, 0.7% and 3.2% of the total electric energy consumed by the system, respectively. The electric energy cost per transplant, depending on the seasonal electric energy charge, was 2.5-2.6 Yen. The ratio of net chemical energy fixed by transplants to the total electric energy consumed by the system was estimated at 0.006 when the transplants grew normally. The coefficient of performance of the system was 8.0 and about 2 times higher than that described in the catalog of the air conditioner. The maximum percentage of heat energy transported by ventilation and penetrated through walls and floor to the cooling load of the system was estimated at 0.18% in summer and -25% in winter.

Retrofits were conducted from March to June 2013. Detailed end-use electricity consumption is being monitored for two years, spanning pre- and post-retrofit. This paper summarizes the end use energy savings and economic evaluation results from lighting and smart plug measures. The lighting retrofit included changing incandescent lighting to CFL or LED. Results from pre-retrofit monitoring revealed that the lighting and plug loads constituted 22% of total site electricity consumption (7.7 kWh per day). A short-term analysis of the study homes, for which 56% of bulbs were changed-out, showed a seasonally adjusted reduction to total site power of 1.2 kWh per day. Home devices such as computers, printers, and gaming centers continue to draw power when unused but left in their low power modes. Advanced Power Strips (APS) can reduce this wasted energy. To study their potential savings, entertainment center energy use was submetered in all homes. APSs were intended to be installed in those with low power loads of at least 10 watts, but only nine had both homeowner acceptance and large enough power losses. Often equipment above the energy loss threshold could not be shut down (e.g. remote printers, DVRs) without functionality loss. Average low power mode draw for the final dataset was 15 watts and monitored data showed the APS saved between 0.2 and 0.7 kWh per day over preretrofit.

Dataset-ID: 004-012-059 Dataset: Presents estimates of the electricity produced by wind energy for the United States as a whole and for individual states and Washington, DC, as available. The kinetic energy present in wind motion can be converted to mechanical energy for driving pumps, mills, and electric power generators. The State Energy Data System (SEDS) is maintained and operated by the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA). The goal in maintaining SEDS is to create historical time series of energy production, consumption, prices, and expenditures by state that are defined as consistently as possible over time and across sectors. SEDS is used primarily to provide (1) state energy production, consumption, price, and expenditure estimates to Members of Congress, federal and state agencies, and the general public; and (2) the historical time series necessary to develop EIA’s energy models. Efforts are made to ensure that the sums of the state estimates equal the national totals as closely as possible for each energy type and end-use sector as published in other EIA publications. SEDS state energy consumption estimates are generally comparable to the statistics in EIA's Annual Energy Review and Monthly Energy Review consumption tables. Although SEDS incorporates the most consistent series and procedures possible, users of this report should recognize the limitations of the data that are due to changing and inadequate data sources.
