Magnetosonic waves propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field are studied with attention to the effect of multiple ion species. First, power spectra of magnetic field fluctuations and autocorrelation functions in thermal equilibrium plasmas are numerically obtained. In a multi-ion-species plasma, besides $��\simeq kv_{\rm A}$ mode, numerous waves are present near many different ion cyclotron frequencies. The autocorrelation function of the quasi-mode consisting of these waves is not recovered to its initial value, owing to the phase mixing of these waves. Next, with particle simulations, evolution of a macroscopic perpendicular disturbance is investigated. In a multi-ion-species plasma, this disturbance is damped. This review starts by looking at the historical development and recalling the basic ideas of PBII. Advantages and disadvantages are compared to conventional ion beam implantation and physical vapor deposition for PBII and PBIID, respectively, followed by a summary of the physics of sheath dynamics, plasma and pulse specifications, plasma diagnostics, and process modeling. The review moves on to technology considerations for plasma sources and process reactors. PBII surface modification and PBIID coatings are applied in a wide range of situations. They include the by-now traditional tribological applications of reducing wear and corrosion through the formation of hard, tough, smooth, low-friction, and chemically inert phases and coatings, e.g., for engine components. PBII has become viable for the formation of shallow junctions and other applications in microelectronics. More recently, the rapidly growing field of biomaterial synthesis makes use of PBII and PBIID to alter surfaces of or produce coatings on surgical implants and other biomedical devices. With limitations, also nonconducting materials such as plastic sheets can be treated. The major interest in PBII processing originates from its flexibility in ion energy (from a few electron volts up to about 100 keV), and the capability to efficiently treat, or deposit on, large areas, and (within limits) to process nonflat, three-dimensional workpieces, including forming and modifying metastable phases and nanostructures.

Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.

Plasma sputtering is one of the most promising methods for reducing the amount of platinum catalyst in porous electrodes for low temperature fuel cells. Here, a simulation of the platinum deposition by radio frequency plasma sputtering has been developed and compared with experimental results to allow optimization of the deposition process. In the simulation, the transport of sputtered atoms through the argon plasma is obtained using a 3D Monte Carlo model called SPaTinG (Sputtered Particles Transport in Gas). The Yamamura formula provides the Pt sputtering yield on the target, and the initial energy distribution of sputtered atoms is given by the Thompson distribution. A 1D hybrid model is used to estimate the mean energy of argon ions impinging onto the platinum target. Experimentally, platinum is deposited on silicon in two plasma sputtering chambers with different geometries. The deposition rate is measured by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The angular distribution of the Pt atoms ejected from the target surface and the condensation coefficient of the Pt atoms on silicon are calculated by adjusting the simulated and experimental deposition rates at 0.5 Pa. A good agreement between the simulation and the experiment is observed as a function of the target–substrate distance for the two system geometries at low pressure (0.5 Pa). This article points out the experimental protocol, biases corrections and post-process needed to obtain reproducible and quantitative electron emission measurements. The measurements have been performed for incident electrons energy between 5 eV and 105 eV and for three samples materials: silver, graphite and SiO 2. These measurements show that wall absorbs more energy at high incident electrons energy and that graphite absorbs more energy than silver, than SiO 2. Results are presented for mono-energetic incident electron beam and for a Lambertian energy distribution. Analytical laws fitted from experimental results and applicable for modelling issue are proposed for a Lambertian distribution of incident electrons.

This work deals with a general energetic approach to establish an accurate electromechanical model of a piezoelectric transformer (PT). Hamilton's principle is used to obtain the equations of motion for free vibrations. The modal characteristics (mass, stiffness, primary and secondary electromechanical conversion factors) are also deduced. Then, to illustrate this general electromechanical method, the variational principle is applied to both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Rosen-type PT models. A comparison of modal parameters, mechanical displacements, and electrical potentials are presented for both models. Finally, the validity of the electrodynamical model of nonhomogeneous Rosen-type PT is confirmed by a numerical comparison based on a finite elements method and an experimental identification.

AbstractDifferent types of high energy hard probes are used to extract the jet transport properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, of which the heavy boson tagged jets are undoubtedly the most sophisticated due to its clean decay signature and production mechanism. In this study, we used the resummation improved pQCD approach with high order correction in the hard factor to calculate the momentum ratio $$x_J$$ x J distributions of Z and Higgs (H) tagged jets. We found that the formalism can provide a good description of the 5.02 TeV pp data. Using the BDMPS energy loss formalism, along with the OSU 2 + 1D hydro to simulate the effect of the medium, we extracted the value of the jet transport coefficient to be around $${\hat{q}}_0=4\sim 8~\text {GeV}^2/\text {fm}$$ q ^ 0 = 4 ∼ 8 GeV 2 / fm by comparing with the Z + jet PbPb experimental data. The H + jet $$x_J$$ x J distribution were calculated in a similar manner in contrast and found to have a stronger Sudakov effect as compared with the Z + jet distribution. This study uses a clean color-neutral boson as trigger to study the jet quenching effect and serves as a complimentary method in the extraction of the QGP’s transport coefficient in high energy nuclear collisions.

Recently, studies of jet interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in high energy heavy ion collisions are of growing interest, particularly towards understanding partonic energy loss in the QGP medium and its related modifications of the jet shower and fragmentation. Since the QGP is a colored medium, the extent of jet quenching and consequently, the transport properties of the medium are expected to be sensitive to fundamental properties of the jets such as the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. Identifying the jet flavor enables an extraction of the mass dependence in jet-QGP interactions. We present a novel approach to tagging heavy-flavor jets at collider experiments utilizing the information contained within jet constituents via the model architecture. We show the performance of this model in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy √(s) = 200 GeV as characterized by common metrics and showcase its ability to extract high purity heavy-flavor jet sample at various jet momenta and realistic production cross-sections including a brief discussion on the impact of out-of-time pile-up. Such studies open new opportunities for future high purity heavy-flavor measurements at jet energies accessible at current and future collider experiments.

This plasma produced by a plasma torch is commonly used for the removal of boron from Silicon [2]. Some modules made at SIMAP-EPM enable us to model the plasma specificities and the interaction of the conducting fluid with the electromagnetic field. The power generated by the coil will be partly dissipated with the joule effect in the conductive parts of the device, partly transmitted into the plasma. The energy transmitted into the plasma will be partly used for chemical reactions, partly used to heat the plasma. However the plasma will also transmit some of its energy to the water-cooled walls with the radiative effects. We define the energy efficiency R eff as the fraction of plasma power provided by the torch to the reactor (in the form of an enthalpy flow and radiation flux). This study aims to predict this ratio for a given set of experiments [3].

The resistance against corrosion was only slightly improved compared to non-coated alloy. The origin of this unsatisfactory result lies in the cracking of the coating that occurred when the pieces were introduced in the furnace, due to the great difference in the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of alumina and 304L steel. However, the plasma-sprayed alumina coatings themselves appear as impervious enough to provide an efficient protection of this alloy against the very corrosive atmosphere of the incinerator.

Magnetosonic waves propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field are studied with attention to the effect of multiple ion species. First, power spectra of magnetic field fluctuations and autocorrelation functions in thermal equilibrium plasmas are numerically obtained. In a multi-ion-species plasma, besides $��\simeq kv_{\rm A}$ mode, numerous waves are present near many different ion cyclotron frequencies. The autocorrelation function of the quasi-mode consisting of these waves is not recovered to its initial value, owing to the phase mixing of these waves. Next, with particle simulations, evolution of a macroscopic perpendicular disturbance is investigated. In a multi-ion-species plasma, this disturbance is damped. This review starts by looking at the historical development and recalling the basic ideas of PBII. Advantages and disadvantages are compared to conventional ion beam implantation and physical vapor deposition for PBII and PBIID, respectively, followed by a summary of the physics of sheath dynamics, plasma and pulse specifications, plasma diagnostics, and process modeling. The review moves on to technology considerations for plasma sources and process reactors. PBII surface modification and PBIID coatings are applied in a wide range of situations. They include the by-now traditional tribological applications of reducing wear and corrosion through the formation of hard, tough, smooth, low-friction, and chemically inert phases and coatings, e.g., for engine components. PBII has become viable for the formation of shallow junctions and other applications in microelectronics. More recently, the rapidly growing field of biomaterial synthesis makes use of PBII and PBIID to alter surfaces of or produce coatings on surgical implants and other biomedical devices. With limitations, also nonconducting materials such as plastic sheets can be treated. The major interest in PBII processing originates from its flexibility in ion energy (from a few electron volts up to about 100 keV), and the capability to efficiently treat, or deposit on, large areas, and (within limits) to process nonflat, three-dimensional workpieces, including forming and modifying metastable phases and nanostructures.

Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.

Plasma sputtering is one of the most promising methods for reducing the amount of platinum catalyst in porous electrodes for low temperature fuel cells. Here, a simulation of the platinum deposition by radio frequency plasma sputtering has been developed and compared with experimental results to allow optimization of the deposition process. In the simulation, the transport of sputtered atoms through the argon plasma is obtained using a 3D Monte Carlo model called SPaTinG (Sputtered Particles Transport in Gas). The Yamamura formula provides the Pt sputtering yield on the target, and the initial energy distribution of sputtered atoms is given by the Thompson distribution. A 1D hybrid model is used to estimate the mean energy of argon ions impinging onto the platinum target. Experimentally, platinum is deposited on silicon in two plasma sputtering chambers with different geometries. The deposition rate is measured by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The angular distribution of the Pt atoms ejected from the target surface and the condensation coefficient of the Pt atoms on silicon are calculated by adjusting the simulated and experimental deposition rates at 0.5 Pa. A good agreement between the simulation and the experiment is observed as a function of the target–substrate distance for the two system geometries at low pressure (0.5 Pa). This article points out the experimental protocol, biases corrections and post-process needed to obtain reproducible and quantitative electron emission measurements. The measurements have been performed for incident electrons energy between 5 eV and 105 eV and for three samples materials: silver, graphite and SiO 2. These measurements show that wall absorbs more energy at high incident electrons energy and that graphite absorbs more energy than silver, than SiO 2. Results are presented for mono-energetic incident electron beam and for a Lambertian energy distribution. Analytical laws fitted from experimental results and applicable for modelling issue are proposed for a Lambertian distribution of incident electrons.

This work deals with a general energetic approach to establish an accurate electromechanical model of a piezoelectric transformer (PT). Hamilton's principle is used to obtain the equations of motion for free vibrations. The modal characteristics (mass, stiffness, primary and secondary electromechanical conversion factors) are also deduced. Then, to illustrate this general electromechanical method, the variational principle is applied to both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Rosen-type PT models. A comparison of modal parameters, mechanical displacements, and electrical potentials are presented for both models. Finally, the validity of the electrodynamical model of nonhomogeneous Rosen-type PT is confirmed by a numerical comparison based on a finite elements method and an experimental identification.

AbstractDifferent types of high energy hard probes are used to extract the jet transport properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, of which the heavy boson tagged jets are undoubtedly the most sophisticated due to its clean decay signature and production mechanism. In this study, we used the resummation improved pQCD approach with high order correction in the hard factor to calculate the momentum ratio $$x_J$$ x J distributions of Z and Higgs (H) tagged jets. We found that the formalism can provide a good description of the 5.02 TeV pp data. Using the BDMPS energy loss formalism, along with the OSU 2 + 1D hydro to simulate the effect of the medium, we extracted the value of the jet transport coefficient to be around $${\hat{q}}_0=4\sim 8~\text {GeV}^2/\text {fm}$$ q ^ 0 = 4 ∼ 8 GeV 2 / fm by comparing with the Z + jet PbPb experimental data. The H + jet $$x_J$$ x J distribution were calculated in a similar manner in contrast and found to have a stronger Sudakov effect as compared with the Z + jet distribution. This study uses a clean color-neutral boson as trigger to study the jet quenching effect and serves as a complimentary method in the extraction of the QGP’s transport coefficient in high energy nuclear collisions.

Recently, studies of jet interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in high energy heavy ion collisions are of growing interest, particularly towards understanding partonic energy loss in the QGP medium and its related modifications of the jet shower and fragmentation. Since the QGP is a colored medium, the extent of jet quenching and consequently, the transport properties of the medium are expected to be sensitive to fundamental properties of the jets such as the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. Identifying the jet flavor enables an extraction of the mass dependence in jet-QGP interactions. We present a novel approach to tagging heavy-flavor jets at collider experiments utilizing the information contained within jet constituents via the model architecture. We show the performance of this model in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy √(s) = 200 GeV as characterized by common metrics and showcase its ability to extract high purity heavy-flavor jet sample at various jet momenta and realistic production cross-sections including a brief discussion on the impact of out-of-time pile-up. Such studies open new opportunities for future high purity heavy-flavor measurements at jet energies accessible at current and future collider experiments.

This plasma produced by a plasma torch is commonly used for the removal of boron from Silicon [2]. Some modules made at SIMAP-EPM enable us to model the plasma specificities and the interaction of the conducting fluid with the electromagnetic field. The power generated by the coil will be partly dissipated with the joule effect in the conductive parts of the device, partly transmitted into the plasma. The energy transmitted into the plasma will be partly used for chemical reactions, partly used to heat the plasma. However the plasma will also transmit some of its energy to the water-cooled walls with the radiative effects. We define the energy efficiency R eff as the fraction of plasma power provided by the torch to the reactor (in the form of an enthalpy flow and radiation flux). This study aims to predict this ratio for a given set of experiments [3].

The resistance against corrosion was only slightly improved compared to non-coated alloy. The origin of this unsatisfactory result lies in the cracking of the coating that occurred when the pieces were introduced in the furnace, due to the great difference in the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of alumina and 304L steel. However, the plasma-sprayed alumina coatings themselves appear as impervious enough to provide an efficient protection of this alloy against the very corrosive atmosphere of the incinerator.
