This paper provides two tests that check for spatial interdependence such as wake effects. Those effects are suspected to have a negative influence on wind power production. After that, we introduce a new modeling approach that is based on the generalized wind power prediction tool (GWPPT) and therefore respect both-sided censoring of the data. The new model makes use of a spatial lag model (SLM) specification and allows for random effects in the panel data. Finally, we provide a short empirical study that compares the forecasting accuracy of our model to the established models WPPT, GWPPT, and the naive persistence predictor. We show that our new model provides significantly better forecasts than the established models.

The harvester consists of a clamped–clamped beam with a stiff plate in the middle to realize the impact electrification process when subjected to external vibrations. The harvester uses stiffening in the clamped–clamped beam introduced by the impact between two triboelectric layers to increase the frequency bandwidth. A piecewise theoretical model is used to model the harvester for two scenarios of motions, before and after impact. The harvester is tested experimentally under different harmonic excitation to validate the theoretical model. The outcomes show a good agreement between both experimental and theoretical results. Higher bandwidth is achieved at a lower gap separation distance. The operating bandwidth of the energy harvester increased from 4.4 Hz to 17.8 Hz with an RMS output voltage level of 7 V and an output power density of 7mW∕m2at 1.4 g excitation level and 100μmgap. The model is extended and validated experimentally under random excitation. The simulated power spectral densities are in good agreement with the experimental results.

However, the mechanism by which the DAS algorithm simultaneously achieves competitive accuracy and fast execution speed, has not been elucidated by a theoretical derivation. We analyze the DAS algorithm by comparing it with a message passing algorithm. Graphical models, inference methods, and energy-minimization frameworks are compared between DAS and message passing algorithms. Moreover, the performances of DAS and other message passing methods [sum-product belief propagation (BP), max-product BP, and tree-reweighted message passing] are experimentally compared.

This paper describes a hierarchy of increasingly complex statistical models for wind power generation in Alberta applied to wind power production data that are publicly available. The models are based on combining spatial and temporal correlations. We apply the method of Gaussian random fields to analyze the wind power time series of the 19 existing wind farms in Alberta. Following the work of Gneiting et al., three space-time models are used: Stationary, Separability, and Full Symmetry. We build several spatio-temporal covariance function estimates with increasing complexity: separable, non-separable and symmetric, and non-separable and non-symmetric. We compare the performance of the models using kriging predictions and prediction intervals for both the existing wind farms and a new farm in Alberta. It is shown that the spatial correlation in the models captures the predominantly westerly prevailing wind direction. We use the selected model to forecast the mean and the standard deviation of the future aggregate wind power generation of Alberta and investigate new wind farm siting on the basis of reducing aggregate variability.

Underhill;AbstractUnlike smaller raptors, which can readily use flapping flight, large raptors are mainly restricted to soaring flight due to energetic constraints. Soaring comprises of two main strategies: thermal and orographic soaring. These soaring strategies are driven by discrete uplift sources determined by the underlying topography and meteorological conditions in an area. High‐resolution GPS tracking of raptor flight allows the identification of these flight strategies and interpretation of the spatiotemporal occurrence of thermal and orographic soaring. In this study, we develop methods to identify soaring flight behaviors from high‐resolution GPS tracking data of Verreaux’s eagle Aquila verreauxii and analyze these data to understand the conditions that promote the use of thermal and orographic soaring. We use these findings to predict the use of soaring flight both spatially (across the landscape) and temporally (throughout the year) in two topographically contrasting regions in South Africa. We found that topography is important in determining the occurrence of soaring flight and that thermal soaring occurs in relatively flat areas which are likely to have good thermal uplift availability. The predicted use of orographic soaring was predominately determined by terrain slope. Contrary to our expectations, the topography and meteorology of eagle territories in the Sandveld promoted the use of soaring flight to a greater extent than in territories in the more mountainous Cederberg region. Spatiotemporal mapping of predicted flight behaviors can broaden our understanding of how large raptors like the Verreaux’s eagle use their habitat and how that links to energetics (as the preferential use of areas that maximize net energy gain is expected), reproductive success, and ultimately population dynamics. Understanding the fine‐scale landscape use and environmental drivers of raptor flight can also help to predict and mitigate potential detrimental effects of anthropogenic developments, such as mortality via collision with wind turbines.

Effective agricultural policymaking requires the accurate estimation of the production technology and efficiency of farms. However, several methodological issues should be considered when modelling production and estimating technical efficiency. In this paper, we focus on two of these—technological heterogeneity and theoretical consistency—as implied in microeconomic theory. Heterogeneity in the efficiency literature is often evaluated using a variable intercept model. However, in farm production, it is likely that heterogeneity also affects the marginal productivity of production factors. Some earlier papers investigated the effect of unobserved heterogeneity on technical efficiency using latent class models, but the application of random parameter models is limited. One of our main contributions in this paper is that we apply a modified version of a random parameter model to investigate the effect of unobserved heterogeneity on production factors and efficiency. The second aim was to impose regularity conditions into the model through introducing linear and non-linear constraints and thereby investigate their significance. Third, we examined the relationship between unobserved heterogeneity and the natural and economic conditions of farms. Our findings show that heterogeneity has a greater effect on variation in output than technical efficiency; furthermore, the violation of theoretical consistency significantly influences the results. These findings also reveal that the explanatory power of regional natural and economic conditions is significant but not sufficient on the variance of estimated unobserved heterogeneity.

Parking choice models proposed over recent years have been aimed at choosing the relevant variables and pricing policies affecting said choice. In our analyses, we have encountered some gaps to cover; for this reason, we introduce a methodology for addressing user parking choices, including the availability of parking alternatives in each of the studied zones presenting pivoted scenarios. This methodology has been developed based on a stated preferences survey design to define user behaviour when making parking choices through discrete-choice models. Furthermore, the estimated models have considered systematic and random variations in user tastes and the correlation between similar or related parking alternatives. This methodology has made it possible to provide greater realism in generating fictitious parking scenarios. The results show the importance of the fee attribute and the differences in the users’ preferences depending on whether they live inside or outside the study area and their arrival time at the destination. Several scenarios have been simulated, and in these scenarios, it is found that removing free parking areas or restricting free parking in favour of parking fee regulation in congested zones can be an efficient policy measure to promote other parking alternatives and reduce the number of vehicles searching for a parking space.

Closed photobioreactors have to be optimized in terms of light utilization and overall photosynthesis rate. A simple model coupling the hydrodynamics and the photosynthesis kinetics has been proposed to analyze the photosynthesis dynamics due to the continuous shuttle of microalgae between dark and lighted zones of the photobioreactor. Microalgal motion has been described according to a stochastic Lagrangian approach adopting the turbulence model suitable for the photobioreactor configuration (single vs. two-phase flows). Effects of light path, biomass concentration, turbulence level and irradiance have been reported in terms of overall photosynthesis rate. Different irradiation strategies (internal, lateral and rounding) and several photobioreactor configurations (flat, tubular, bubble column, airlift) have been investigated. Photobioreactor configurations and the operating conditions to maximize the photosynthesis rate have been pointed out. Results confirmed and explained the common experimental observation that high concentrated cultures are not photoinhibited at high irradiance level.

Solar energy forecasting is an active research problem and a key issue to increase the competitiveness of solar power plants in the energy market. However, using meteorological, production, or irradiance data from the past is not enough to produce accurate forecasts. This article aims to integrate a prediction algorithm (Smart Persistence), irradiance, and past production data, using a state-of-the-art machine learning technique (Random Forests). Three years of data from six solar PV modules at Faro (Portugal) are analyzed. A set of features that combines past data, predictions, averages, and variances is proposed for training and validation. The experimental results show that using Smart Persistence as a Machine Learning input greatly improves the accuracy of short-term forecasts, achieving an NRMSE of 0.25 on the best panels at short horizons and 0.33 on a 6 h horizon.

Via a choice experiment, households were offered the choice between as set of green electricity contracts, characterised by the renewables share in electricity supplied to their dwelling, the renewable generation technology (wind, biomass, PV...) and its impact on the electricity bill. A main effects conditional logit model and a main effects random parameter logit model are estimated. The estimation results show that households prefer ‘green contacts’, but renewables technologies are valued differently. The estimates are then used to assess the marginal willingness to pay by Flemish households for each of the contract attributes. From a policy perspective, the results suggest that a not too small proportion of Flemish households would be willing to switch to another power supply contract if that can be done at limited cost. Moreover, the results suggest that it would not be a good idea to focus on the deployment of one or only a few technologies. Policies resulting in a diversified portfolio of technologies are positively valued by households and will obtain broader support.

This paper provides two tests that check for spatial interdependence such as wake effects. Those effects are suspected to have a negative influence on wind power production. After that, we introduce a new modeling approach that is based on the generalized wind power prediction tool (GWPPT) and therefore respect both-sided censoring of the data. The new model makes use of a spatial lag model (SLM) specification and allows for random effects in the panel data. Finally, we provide a short empirical study that compares the forecasting accuracy of our model to the established models WPPT, GWPPT, and the naive persistence predictor. We show that our new model provides significantly better forecasts than the established models.

The harvester consists of a clamped–clamped beam with a stiff plate in the middle to realize the impact electrification process when subjected to external vibrations. The harvester uses stiffening in the clamped–clamped beam introduced by the impact between two triboelectric layers to increase the frequency bandwidth. A piecewise theoretical model is used to model the harvester for two scenarios of motions, before and after impact. The harvester is tested experimentally under different harmonic excitation to validate the theoretical model. The outcomes show a good agreement between both experimental and theoretical results. Higher bandwidth is achieved at a lower gap separation distance. The operating bandwidth of the energy harvester increased from 4.4 Hz to 17.8 Hz with an RMS output voltage level of 7 V and an output power density of 7mW∕m2at 1.4 g excitation level and 100μmgap. The model is extended and validated experimentally under random excitation. The simulated power spectral densities are in good agreement with the experimental results.

We analyze the DAS algorithm by comparing it with a message passing algorithm. Graphical models, inference methods, and energy-minimization frameworks are compared between DAS and message passing algorithms. Moreover, the performances of DAS and other message passing methods [sum-product belief propagation (BP), max-product BP, and tree-reweighted message passing] are experimentally compared.

This paper describes a hierarchy of increasingly complex statistical models for wind power generation in Alberta applied to wind power production data that are publicly available. The models are based on combining spatial and temporal correlations. We apply the method of Gaussian random fields to analyze the wind power time series of the 19 existing wind farms in Alberta. Following the work of Gneiting et al., three space-time models are used: Stationary, Separability, and Full Symmetry. We build several spatio-temporal covariance function estimates with increasing complexity: separable, non-separable and symmetric, and non-separable and non-symmetric. We compare the performance of the models using kriging predictions and prediction intervals for both the existing wind farms and a new farm in Alberta. It is shown that the spatial correlation in the models captures the predominantly westerly prevailing wind direction. We use the selected model to forecast the mean and the standard deviation of the future aggregate wind power generation of Alberta and investigate new wind farm siting on the basis of reducing aggregate variability.

Underhill;AbstractUnlike smaller raptors, which can readily use flapping flight, large raptors are mainly restricted to soaring flight due to energetic constraints. Soaring comprises of two main strategies: thermal and orographic soaring. These soaring strategies are driven by discrete uplift sources determined by the underlying topography and meteorological conditions in an area. High‐resolution GPS tracking of raptor flight allows the identification of these flight strategies and interpretation of the spatiotemporal occurrence of thermal and orographic soaring. In this study, we develop methods to identify soaring flight behaviors from high‐resolution GPS tracking data of Verreaux’s eagle Aquila verreauxii and analyze these data to understand the conditions that promote the use of thermal and orographic soaring. We use these findings to predict the use of soaring flight both spatially (across the landscape) and temporally (throughout the year) in two topographically contrasting regions in South Africa. We found that topography is important in determining the occurrence of soaring flight and that thermal soaring occurs in relatively flat areas which are likely to have good thermal uplift availability. The predicted use of orographic soaring was predominately determined by terrain slope. Contrary to our expectations, the topography and meteorology of eagle territories in the Sandveld promoted the use of soaring flight to a greater extent than in territories in the more mountainous Cederberg region. Spatiotemporal mapping of predicted flight behaviors can broaden our understanding of how large raptors like the Verreaux’s eagle use their habitat and how that links to energetics (as the preferential use of areas that maximize net energy gain is expected), reproductive success, and ultimately population dynamics. Understanding the fine‐scale landscape use and environmental drivers of raptor flight can also help to predict and mitigate potential detrimental effects of anthropogenic developments, such as mortality via collision with wind turbines.

Effective agricultural policymaking requires the accurate estimation of the production technology and efficiency of farms. However, several methodological issues should be considered when modelling production and estimating technical efficiency. In this paper, we focus on two of these—technological heterogeneity and theoretical consistency—as implied in microeconomic theory. Heterogeneity in the efficiency literature is often evaluated using a variable intercept model. However, in farm production, it is likely that heterogeneity also affects the marginal productivity of production factors. Some earlier papers investigated the effect of unobserved heterogeneity on technical efficiency using latent class models, but the application of random parameter models is limited. One of our main contributions in this paper is that we apply a modified version of a random parameter model to investigate the effect of unobserved heterogeneity on production factors and efficiency. The second aim was to impose regularity conditions into the model through introducing linear and non-linear constraints and thereby investigate their significance. Third, we examined the relationship between unobserved heterogeneity and the natural and economic conditions of farms. Our findings show that heterogeneity has a greater effect on variation in output than technical efficiency; furthermore, the violation of theoretical consistency significantly influences the results. These findings also reveal that the explanatory power of regional natural and economic conditions is significant but not sufficient on the variance of estimated unobserved heterogeneity.

Parking choice models proposed over recent years have been aimed at choosing the relevant variables and pricing policies affecting said choice. In our analyses, we have encountered some gaps to cover; for this reason, we introduce a methodology for addressing user parking choices, including the availability of parking alternatives in each of the studied zones presenting pivoted scenarios. This methodology has been developed based on a stated preferences survey design to define user behaviour when making parking choices through discrete-choice models. Furthermore, the estimated models have considered systematic and random variations in user tastes and the correlation between similar or related parking alternatives. This methodology has made it possible to provide greater realism in generating fictitious parking scenarios. The results show the importance of the fee attribute and the differences in the users’ preferences depending on whether they live inside or outside the study area and their arrival time at the destination. Several scenarios have been simulated, and in these scenarios, it is found that removing free parking areas or restricting free parking in favour of parking fee regulation in congested zones can be an efficient policy measure to promote other parking alternatives and reduce the number of vehicles searching for a parking space.

Closed photobioreactors have to be optimized in terms of light utilization and overall photosynthesis rate. A simple model coupling the hydrodynamics and the photosynthesis kinetics has been proposed to analyze the photosynthesis dynamics due to the continuous shuttle of microalgae between dark and lighted zones of the photobioreactor. Microalgal motion has been described according to a stochastic Lagrangian approach adopting the turbulence model suitable for the photobioreactor configuration (single vs. two-phase flows). Effects of light path, biomass concentration, turbulence level and irradiance have been reported in terms of overall photosynthesis rate. Different irradiation strategies (internal, lateral and rounding) and several photobioreactor configurations (flat, tubular, bubble column, airlift) have been investigated. Photobioreactor configurations and the operating conditions to maximize the photosynthesis rate have been pointed out. Results confirmed and explained the common experimental observation that high concentrated cultures are not photoinhibited at high irradiance level.

Solar energy forecasting is an active research problem and a key issue to increase the competitiveness of solar power plants in the energy market. However, using meteorological, production, or irradiance data from the past is not enough to produce accurate forecasts. This article aims to integrate a prediction algorithm (Smart Persistence), irradiance, and past production data, using a state-of-the-art machine learning technique (Random Forests). Three years of data from six solar PV modules at Faro (Portugal) are analyzed. A set of features that combines past data, predictions, averages, and variances is proposed for training and validation. The experimental results show that using Smart Persistence as a Machine Learning input greatly improves the accuracy of short-term forecasts, achieving an NRMSE of 0.25 on the best panels at short horizons and 0.33 on a 6 h horizon.

Via a choice experiment, households were offered the choice between as set of green electricity contracts, characterised by the renewables share in electricity supplied to their dwelling, the renewable generation technology (wind, biomass, PV...) and its impact on the electricity bill. A main effects conditional logit model and a main effects random parameter logit model are estimated. The estimation results show that households prefer ‘green contacts’, but renewables technologies are valued differently. The estimates are then used to assess the marginal willingness to pay by Flemish households for each of the contract attributes. From a policy perspective, the results suggest that a not too small proportion of Flemish households would be willing to switch to another power supply contract if that can be done at limited cost. Moreover, the results suggest that it would not be a good idea to focus on the deployment of one or only a few technologies. Policies resulting in a diversified portfolio of technologies are positively valued by households and will obtain broader support.
