description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2009 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Barreau, Nicolas;Cu(In,Ga)Se-2-based solar cells buffered with indium sulfide grown by numerous techniques have reached efficiencies comparable to those achieved by standard devices buffered with (CBD)CdS. The present paper firstly recalls some of the properties of the indium sulfide single crystal and Points Out the disagreements concerning the thin films properties inventoried in the literature. Secondly, the influence of the presence of some "foreign elements" within file indium sulfide on its properties is presented. It is shown that these "foreign elements", even at low concentration levels, are possibly at the origin or the thin films properties deviations compared to the single crystal. The impact of these contaminants on the solar cells performance is finally discussed.

Chalapathy; Jae Ho Yun; Jun Sun Jang;Abstract In this work, earth-abundant CZTSSe thin film solar cells were fabricated by sulfo-selenization of the Mo/Zn/Cu/Sn/Cu metallic precursors. The influences of morphological and compositional properties of the absorbers on performance of solar cells were investigated by tuning Cu content in the films. The Raman analysis showed that absorbers consist of a kesterite CZTSSe phase with ZnSe as a minor secondary phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that the surfaces are Cu depleted and Zn enriched compared with the bulk composition of the absorbers. The results indicate that during sulfo-selenization the Cu diffused into the film and the Zn towards the film surface. The performance of the solar cells initially improved with the increasing of the Cu content and then decreased. By tuning the Cu content in the absorbers, the minority-carrier life time improved from 0.8 to 1.6 ns. The power conversion efficiency increased from 5.1 to 8.03% with fine controlling of Cu composition of the CZTSSe absorbers. The diode-ideality factors are higher than 2, suggesting an increased interfacial recombination in the devices. The high ideality-factors A and low minority carrier life times may originate from surface and bulk related defects, which in turn limits the Voc and the achievable high conversion efficiency for the CZTSSe thin film solar cells.

Thinning increased aboveground productivity and reduced stem mortality in this Mediterranean forest during four years just after thinning, contributing to the maintenance of forest functioning under changing climatic conditions. Q. ilex was the only species positively affected by the thinning: stem growth increased for all stem sizes, and mortality was significantly lower in thinned plots. On the contrary, mortality rates of Phillyrea latifolia and Arbutus unedo were not significantly lower. Stem growth increased for P. latifolia only in the smallest stem-size class. Our results highlight the suitability of selective thinning for improving the forest productivity and ensuring the conservation of Mediterranean coppices. Other benefits of selective thinning, such as a decrease in the risk of fire dispersion and an increase in the water supply for human populations, are also discussed.

Dynamic Programming method (DP) is applied as the preferred optimization tool owing to the fact that it guarantees the optimal solution and is applicable to the present problem. Produced profit and peak-shaving are the two objectives considered separately in this study. The results show that the optimal water management of the case study through charging and discharging the reservoir at the appropriate times led to 4% increase in the produced profit. In another part of this study, the optimal performance strategies regarding to the two objectives (produced profit and peak-shaving) are compared. The observed similarity between the two performance strategies implies the substantial dependence of the electricity price and the network demand level. The paper ends with the profitability study of the project and the sensitivity analysis of the results to various economic parameters. Neil Hunter; John A. Timney;Photosynthetic chromatophore vesicles found in some purple bacteria constitute one of the simplest light-harvesting systems in nature. The overall architecture of chromatophore vesicles and the structural integration of vesicle function remain poorly understood despite structural information being available on individual constituent proteins. An all-atom structural model for an entire chromatophore vesicle is presented, which improves upon earlier models by taking into account the stoichiometry of core and antenna complexes determined by the absorption spectrum of intact vesicles in Rhodobacter sphaeroides, as well as the well-established curvature-inducing properties of the dimeric core complex. The absorption spectrum of low-light-adapted vesicles is shown to correspond to a light-harvesting-complex 2 to reaction center ratio of 3:1. A structural model for a vesicle consistent with this stoichiometry is developed and used in the computation of excitonic properties. Considered also is the packing density of antenna and core complexes that is high enough for efficient energy transfer and low enough for quinone diffusion from reaction centers to cytochrome bc(1) complexes.

AbstractA bioreactor system composed of a stirred tank and three tubular bioreactors in series was established, and continuous ethanol fermentation was carried out using a general Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain and a very high gravity medium containing 280 g L−1 glucose, supplemented with 5 g L−1 yeast extract and 3 g L−1 peptone. Sustainable oscillations of glucose, ethanol, and biomass were observed when the tank was operated at the dilution rate of 0.027 h−1, which significantly affected ethanol fermentation performance of the system. After the tubular bioreactors were packed with 1/2″ Intalox ceramic saddles, the oscillations were attenuated and quasi‐steady states were achieved. Residence time distributions were studied for the packed bioreactors by the step input response technique using xylose as a tracer, which was added into the medium at a concentration of 20 g L−1, indicating that the backmixing alleviation assumed for the packed tubular bioreactors could not be established, and its contribution to the oscillation attenuation could not be verified. Furthermore, the role of the packing's yeast cell immobilization in the oscillation attenuation was investigated by packing the tubular bioreactors with packings with significant difference in yeast cell immobilization effects, and the experimental results revealed that only the Intalox ceramic saddles and wood chips with moderate yeast cell immobilization effects could attenuate the oscillations, and correspondingly, improved the ethanol fermentation performance of the system, while the porous polyurethane particles with good yeast cell immobilization effect could not. And the viability analysis for the immobilized yeast cells illustrated that the extremely lower yeast cell viability within the tubular bioreactors packed with the porous polyurethane particles could be the reason for their inefficiency, while the yeast cells loosely immobilized onto the surfaces of the Intalox ceramic saddles and wood chips could be renewed during the fermentation, guaranteeing their viability and making them more efficient in attenuating the oscillations. The packing Raschig rings without yeast cell immobilization effect did not affect the oscillatory behavior of the tubular bioreactors, further supporting the role of the yeast cell immobilization in the oscillation attenuation. AbstractA common control strategy for the production of recombinant proteins in Pichia pastoris using the alcohol oxidase 1 (AOX1) promotor is to separate the bioprocess into two main phases: biomass generation on glycerol and protein production via methanol induction. This study reports the establishment of a soft sensor for the prediction of biomass concentration that adapts automatically to these distinct phases. A hybrid approach combining mechanistic (carbon balance) and data‐driven modeling (multiple linear regression) is used for this purpose. The model parameters are dynamically adapted according to the current process phase using a multilevel phase detection algorithm. This algorithm is based on the online data of CO2 in the off‐gas (absolute value and first derivative) and cumulative base feed. The evaluation of the model resulted in a mean relative prediction error of 5.52% and R² of .96 for the entire process. The resulting model was implemented as a soft sensor for the online monitoring of the P. pastoris bioprocess. The soft sensor can be used for quality control and as input to process control systems, for example, for methanol control.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2009 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Barreau, Nicolas;Cu(In,Ga)Se-2-based solar cells buffered with indium sulfide grown by numerous techniques have reached efficiencies comparable to those achieved by standard devices buffered with (CBD)CdS.
