    The combination of photonics and silicon technology is a great challenge because of the potentiality of coupling electronics and optical functions on a single chip. Silicon nanocrystals are promising in various areas of photonics especially for light-emitting functionality and for photovoltaic cells. This review describes the recent achievements and remaining challenges of Si photonics with emphasis on the perspectives of Si nanoscale materials. Many of the results and properties can be simulated and understood based on theoretical studies. However, some of the key questions like the light-emitting mechanism are subjects of intense debates despite a remarkable progress in the recent years. Even more complex and important is to move the known experimental observations towards practical applications. The demonstrated devices and approaches are often too complex and/or have too low efficiency. However, the challenge to combine optical and electrical functions on a chip is very strong, and we expect more research activity in the field of Si nanophotonics in the future.

    AbstractIn the North Atlantic, euphausiids (krill) form a major link between primary production and predators including commercially exploited fish. This basin is warming very rapidly, with species expected to shift northwards following their thermal tolerances. Here we show, however, that there has been a 50% decline in surface krill abundance over the last 60 years that occurred in situ, with no associated range shift. While we relate these changes to the warming climate, our study is the first to document an in situ squeeze on living space within this system. The warmer isotherms are shifting measurably northwards but cooler isotherms have remained relatively static, stalled by the subpolar fronts in the NW Atlantic. Consequently the two temperatures defining the core of krill distribution (7–13 °C) were 8° of latitude apart 60 years ago but are presently only 4° apart. Over the 60 year period the core latitudinal distribution of euphausiids has remained relatively stable so a ‘habitat squeeze’, with loss of 4° of latitude in living space, could explain the decline in krill. This highlights that, as the temperature warms, not all species can track isotherms and shift northward at the same rate with both losers and winners emerging under the ‘Atlantification’ of the sub-Arctic.

    This work was intended to develop and evaluate a new polymeric system based on amphiphilic carboxymethylpullulans (CMP(49)C(8) and CMP(12)C(8)) that can spontaneously self-assemble in aqueous solutions and efficiently solubilize hydrophobic drugs.The self-assembling properties of CMP(49)C(8) and CMP(12)C(8) were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy and surface tension measurements. The solubilization of benzophenone and docetaxel was assessed from surface tension measurements, UV spectrometry and HPLC assays. The in vitro cytoxicity of CMP(49)C(8) solutions and the docetaxel commercial vehicle (Tween 80/Ethanol-water) were evaluated in the absence and in the presence of docetaxel.Compared to CMP(12)C(8), CMP(49)C(8) in aqueous solutions appeared to self-organize into monomolecular aggregates containing hydrophobic nanodomains, and to significantly increase the apparent solubility of benzophenone. Docetaxel solubility could also be improved in the presence of CMP(49)C(8) but to a lower extent due to the surface properties of the drug. Nevertheless, in vitro, the cytotoxicity studies revealed that against cancer cells, the CMP(49)C(8)-docetaxel formulation was equipotent to the commercial docetaxel one. Furthermore, in the absence of the drug, CMP(49)C(8) appeared less cytotoxic against macrophages than the Tween 80/Ethanol-water.CMP(49)C(8) is a good candidate for solubilizing hydrophobic drugs and could be applied to docetaxel formulations.

    Biofouling is an important factor to consider when calculating the energetic efficiency of tidal farms. Despite the fact that biofouling effects have been widely investigated in the past for naval applications, very few studies concern tidal turbines. This paper proposes a numerical approach to assess the impact of biofouling on tidal turbines, which is efficient for testing many configurations. Two turbulence models are tested (RANS k-ω SST and LES Smagorinsky) for the motionless blade case to validate them. Then we chose to use the Smagorinsky model for the case of a complete tidal turbine rotor with realistically fouled blades. The pressure coefficient is strongly affected by the barnacle in the motionless blade case and the power coefficient is slightly degraded in the complete rotor case. Motionless blade cases do not represent the real biofouling behaviour for two reasons. First, sessile species settle in the down flow part of the chord where their impact is less important. Then, the surrounding turbulence provoked by the blades rotation in the rotor case reduces the impact of biofouling. In the wake, biofouling generates small vortexes that propagate into the larger ones, causing them to spread their energy.

    Knowledge of rheological evolution of biomass during dry anaerobic digestion (D-AD) is important in the engineering design, modeling, and operation of D-AD reactors. In this work, two methods of rheological analysis, the slump test and the shear-box, were used to measure the evolution of the yield stress, cohesion and friction angle of the straw-cattle manure (SCM) during the D-AD. Firstly, four 60 L batch leach-bed reactors (LBR) were started in parallel and stopped at different stages of the D-AD process on days 0, 10, 21 and 31. Secondly, a 500 L and 2 m length plug flow reactor (PFR) was operated with 40 days of solid retention time and samples were recovered at different positions. The solid degradation during D-AD process was monitored by analysis of the degradation of volatile solids, the fiber content and the Flash BMP. Similar degradation patterns of SCM and rheological evolution were observed in both reactors type. VS content decreased of 10.7% and 10.2% in 30 days in PFR and LBR respectively. VS degradation in both cases was well explained by hemicellulose and cellulose consuming in D-AD process. Considering the rheological analysis, the results showed that D-AD induced a reduction of the yield stress of 28.1 and 24.2% in 30 days in PFR and LBR respectively. Moreover, a similar evolution of cohesion and friction angle value for samples from both reactors was observed. This study demonstrates the close relationship between the state of degradation of the solid biomass and its rheological properties.

    )showed high values at station MJ, where substantial concentrations of nutrients (NO3− and Si(OH)4) were found. Microphytoplankton, which dominated the total algal biomass and production (>82%), were characterized by the proliferation of several chain-forming diatoms. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates (Torodinium, Protoperidinium and Dinophysis) and aloricate (Lohmaniellea and Strombidium) and tintinnid (Tintinnopsis, Tintinnus, Favella and Eutintinnus) ciliates. Higher biomass of these protozoa (359 mg C m −3 ) was observed at station MB, where large tintinnids were encountered. Mesozooplankton mainly represented by Calanoida (Acartia, Temora, Calanus, Eucalanus, Paracalanus and Centropages) and Cyclopoida (Oithona) copepods, exhibited higher and lower biomasses at stations MA/MJ and MB, respectively. Bacterivory represented only 35% of bacterial production at stations MB and R, but higher fractions (65–70%) were observed at stations MA and MJ. Small heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates seemed to be the main controllers of bacteria. Pico- and nanophytoplankton represented a significant alternative carbon pool for micrograzers, which grazing represented 67–90% of pico- and nano-algal production in all stations. Microzooplankton has, however, a relatively low impact on microphytoplankton, as ≤45% of microalgal production was consumed in all stations. This implies that an important fraction of diatom production would be channelled by herbivorous meso-grazers to higher consumers at stations MA and MJ where copepods were numerous. Most of the microalgal production would, however, sink particularly at station MB where copepods were scare. These different trophic interactions suggest different food web structures between stations. A multivorous food web seemed to prevail in stations MJ and MA, whereas microbial web was dominant in the other stations.

    The effect of finite Reynolds numbers and/or internal intermittency on the total kinetic energy and scalar energy transfers is examined in detail. For this purpose, two distinct models for velocity and scalar energy transfer are proposed in the specific context of freely decaying isotropic turbulence. The first one extends the already existing dynamical models (hereafter DYM, i.e. based on transport equations originated in Navier–Stokes and advection-diffusion transport equations). The second one relies on the characteristic time of the strain at a specific scale (hereafter SBM). Both models account for the Reynolds number dependence of the scaling exponent of the second-order structure functions, over a range of scales where such exponents may be defined, i.e. a restricted scaling range (RSR). Therefore, the models developed aim at reproducing the energy transfer over the RSR.     Abstract A central challenge of today's ecological research is predicting how ecosystems will develop under future global change. Accurate predictions are complicated by (a) simultaneous effects of different drivers, such as climate change, nitrogen deposition and management changes; and (b) legacy effects from previous land use. We tested whether herb layer biodiversity (i.e. richness, Shannon diversity and evenness) and functional (i.e. herb cover, specific leaf area [SLA] and plant height) responses to environmental change drivers depended on land‐use history. We used resurvey data from 192 plots across nineteen European temperate forest regions, with large spatial variability in environmental change factors. We tested for interactions between land‐use history, distinguishing ancient and recent (i.e. post‐agricultural) forests and four drivers: temperature, nitrogen deposition, and aridity at the regional scale and light dynamics at the plot‐scale. Land‐use history significantly modulated global change effects on the functional signature of the herb layer (i.e. cover, SLA and plant height). Light availability was the main environmental driver of change interacting with land‐use history. We found greater herb cover and plant height decreases and SLA increases with decreasing light availability in ancient than in recent forests. Furthermore, we found greater decreases in herb cover with increased nitrogen deposition in ancient forests, whereas warming had the strongest decreasing effect on the herb cover in recent forests. Interactive effects between land‐use history and global change on biodiversity were not found, but species evenness increased more in ancient than in recent forests. Synthesis. Our results demonstrate that land‐use history should not be overlooked when predicting forest herb layer responses to global change. Moreover, we found that herb layer composition in semi‐natural deciduous forests is mainly controlled by local canopy characteristics, regulating light levels at the forest floor, and much less by environmental changes at the regional scale (here: warming, nitrogen deposition and aridity). The observed disconnect between biodiversity and functional herb layer responses to environmental changes demonstrates the importance of assessing both types of responses to increase our understanding of the possible impact of global change on the herb layer.

    AbstractBiochar is more and more widely recognized as a promising agricultural amendment improving yield and ecosystem services in a range of different contexts. However, underlying mechanisms contributing to biochars benefits, notably biochar–root interactions, and their mediation by biochar's diverse properties remain unclear and poorly quantified. This study aimed to examine and quantify the interactions between biochar properties and plant traits and their effect on plant performance. To gain a better understanding of biochar–plant interactions and their role in biochar overall effects, biochars with contrasted physical and chemical properties were applied to soils during a 3‐month greenhouse experiment with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Barley biomass as well as several belowground morphological and physiological traits and aboveground traits related to nutrient acquisition were measured. A multivariate structural modeling approach was employed to quantify interactions between biochar properties and plant traits, and their feedback effect on plant biomass. Interactions between biochar chemical and physical properties and barley carboxylate release rate and their contribution to biochar effects were underlined. Among the plant traits examined the release of carboxylate appears as the best proxy to plant biomass following biochar addition, highlighting sparsely reported interactions between total carboxylate release rates and biochar ash content. Multivariate structural modeling offered elements of understanding for the complex interconnected mechanisms involved in biochar influence and their relative contribution. Adopting this approach across a wide range of species and contexts could contribute to ensure more reliable biochar benefits.

    The combination of photonics and silicon technology is a great challenge because of the potentiality of coupling electronics and optical functions on a single chip. Silicon nanocrystals are promising in various areas of photonics especially for light-emitting functionality and for photovoltaic cells. This review describes the recent achievements and remaining challenges of Si photonics with emphasis on the perspectives of Si nanoscale materials. Many of the results and properties can be simulated and understood based on theoretical studies. However, some of the key questions like the light-emitting mechanism are subjects of intense debates despite a remarkable progress in the recent years. Even more complex and important is to move the known experimental observations towards practical applications. The demonstrated devices and approaches are often too complex and/or have too low efficiency. However, the challenge to combine optical and electrical functions on a chip is very strong, and we expect more research activity in the field of Si nanophotonics in the future.

    AbstractIn the North Atlantic, euphausiids (krill) form a major link between primary production and predators including commercially exploited fish. This basin is warming very rapidly, with species expected to shift northwards following their thermal tolerances. Here we show, however, that there has been a 50% decline in surface krill abundance over the last 60 years that occurred in situ, with no associated range shift. While we relate these changes to the warming climate, our study is the first to document an in situ squeeze on living space within this system. The warmer isotherms are shifting measurably northwards but cooler isotherms have remained relatively static, stalled by the subpolar fronts in the NW Atlantic. Consequently the two temperatures defining the core of krill distribution (7–13 °C) were 8° of latitude apart 60 years ago but are presently only 4° apart. Over the 60 year period the core latitudinal distribution of euphausiids has remained relatively stable so a ‘habitat squeeze’, with loss of 4° of latitude in living space, could explain the decline in krill. This highlights that, as the temperature warms, not all species can track isotherms and shift northward at the same rate with both losers and winners emerging under the ‘Atlantification’ of the sub-Arctic.

    This work was intended to develop and evaluate a new polymeric system based on amphiphilic carboxymethylpullulans (CMP(49)C(8) and CMP(12)C(8)) that can spontaneously self-assemble in aqueous solutions and efficiently solubilize hydrophobic drugs.The self-assembling properties of CMP(49)C(8) and CMP(12)C(8) were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy and surface tension measurements. The solubilization of benzophenone and docetaxel was assessed from surface tension measurements, UV spectrometry and HPLC assays. The in vitro cytoxicity of CMP(49)C(8) solutions and the docetaxel commercial vehicle (Tween 80/Ethanol-water) were evaluated in the absence and in the presence of docetaxel.Compared to CMP(12)C(8), CMP(49)C(8) in aqueous solutions appeared to self-organize into monomolecular aggregates containing hydrophobic nanodomains, and to significantly increase the apparent solubility of benzophenone. Docetaxel solubility could also be improved in the presence of CMP(49)C(8) but to a lower extent due to the surface properties of the drug. Nevertheless, in vitro, the cytotoxicity studies revealed that against cancer cells, the CMP(49)C(8)-docetaxel formulation was equipotent to the commercial docetaxel one. Furthermore, in the absence of the drug, CMP(49)C(8) appeared less cytotoxic against macrophages than the Tween 80/Ethanol-water.CMP(49)C(8) is a good candidate for solubilizing hydrophobic drugs and could be applied to docetaxel formulations.

    Biofouling is an important factor to consider when calculating the energetic efficiency of tidal farms. Despite the fact that biofouling effects have been widely investigated in the past for naval applications, very few studies concern tidal turbines. This paper proposes a numerical approach to assess the impact of biofouling on tidal turbines, which is efficient for testing many configurations. Two turbulence models are tested (RANS k-ω SST and LES Smagorinsky) for the motionless blade case to validate them. Then we chose to use the Smagorinsky model for the case of a complete tidal turbine rotor with realistically fouled blades. The pressure coefficient is strongly affected by the barnacle in the motionless blade case and the power coefficient is slightly degraded in the complete rotor case. Motionless blade cases do not represent the real biofouling behaviour for two reasons. First, sessile species settle in the down flow part of the chord where their impact is less important. Then, the surrounding turbulence provoked by the blades rotation in the rotor case reduces the impact of biofouling. In the wake, biofouling generates small vortexes that propagate into the larger ones, causing them to spread their energy.

    Knowledge of rheological evolution of biomass during dry anaerobic digestion (D-AD) is important in the engineering design, modeling, and operation of D-AD reactors. In this work, two methods of rheological analysis, the slump test and the shear-box, were used to measure the evolution of the yield stress, cohesion and friction angle of the straw-cattle manure (SCM) during the D-AD. Firstly, four 60 L batch leach-bed reactors (LBR) were started in parallel and stopped at different stages of the D-AD process on days 0, 10, 21 and 31. Secondly, a 500 L and 2 m length plug flow reactor (PFR) was operated with 40 days of solid retention time and samples were recovered at different positions. The solid degradation during D-AD process was monitored by analysis of the degradation of volatile solids, the fiber content and the Flash BMP. Similar degradation patterns of SCM and rheological evolution were observed in both reactors type. VS content decreased of 10.7% and 10.2% in 30 days in PFR and LBR respectively. VS degradation in both cases was well explained by hemicellulose and cellulose consuming in D-AD process. Considering the rheological analysis, the results showed that D-AD induced a reduction of the yield stress of 28.1 and 24.2% in 30 days in PFR and LBR respectively. Moreover, a similar evolution of cohesion and friction angle value for samples from both reactors was observed. This study demonstrates the close relationship between the state of degradation of the solid biomass and its rheological properties.

    )showed high values at station MJ, where substantial concentrations of nutrients (NO3− and Si(OH)4) were found. Microphytoplankton, which dominated the total algal biomass and production (>82%), were characterized by the proliferation of several chain-forming diatoms. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates (Torodinium, Protoperidinium and Dinophysis) and aloricate (Lohmaniellea and Strombidium) and tintinnid (Tintinnopsis, Tintinnus, Favella and Eutintinnus) ciliates. Higher biomass of these protozoa (359 mg C m −3 ) was observed at station MB, where large tintinnids were encountered. Mesozooplankton mainly represented by Calanoida (Acartia, Temora, Calanus, Eucalanus, Paracalanus and Centropages) and Cyclopoida (Oithona) copepods, exhibited higher and lower biomasses at stations MA/MJ and MB, respectively. Bacterivory represented only 35% of bacterial production at stations MB and R, but higher fractions (65–70%) were observed at stations MA and MJ. Small heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates seemed to be the main controllers of bacteria. Pico- and nanophytoplankton represented a significant alternative carbon pool for micrograzers, which grazing represented 67–90% of pico- and nano-algal production in all stations. Microzooplankton has, however, a relatively low impact on microphytoplankton, as ≤45% of microalgal production was consumed in all stations. This implies that an important fraction of diatom production would be channelled by herbivorous meso-grazers to higher consumers at stations MA and MJ where copepods were numerous. Most of the microalgal production would, however, sink particularly at station MB where copepods were scare. These different trophic interactions suggest different food web structures between stations. A multivorous food web seemed to prevail in stations MJ and MA, whereas microbial web was dominant in the other stations.

    The effect of finite Reynolds numbers and/or internal intermittency on the total kinetic energy and scalar energy transfers is examined in detail. For this purpose, two distinct models for velocity and scalar energy transfer are proposed in the specific context of freely decaying isotropic turbulence. The first one extends the already existing dynamical models (hereafter DYM, i.e. based on transport equations originated in Navier–Stokes and advection-diffusion transport equations). The second one relies on the characteristic time of the strain at a specific scale (hereafter SBM). Both models account for the Reynolds number dependence of the scaling exponent of the second-order structure functions, over a range of scales where such exponents may be defined, i.e. a restricted scaling range (RSR). Therefore, the models developed aim at reproducing the energy transfer over the RSR.     Abstract A central challenge of today's ecological research is predicting how ecosystems will develop under future global change. Accurate predictions are complicated by (a) simultaneous effects of different drivers, such as climate change, nitrogen deposition and management changes; and (b) legacy effects from previous land use. We tested whether herb layer biodiversity (i.e. richness, Shannon diversity and evenness) and functional (i.e. herb cover, specific leaf area [SLA] and plant height) responses to environmental change drivers depended on land‐use history. We used resurvey data from 192 plots across nineteen European temperate forest regions, with large spatial variability in environmental change factors. We tested for interactions between land‐use history, distinguishing ancient and recent (i.e. post‐agricultural) forests and four drivers: temperature, nitrogen deposition, and aridity at the regional scale and light dynamics at the plot‐scale. Land‐use history significantly modulated global change effects on the functional signature of the herb layer (i.e. cover, SLA and plant height). Light availability was the main environmental driver of change interacting with land‐use history. We found greater herb cover and plant height decreases and SLA increases with decreasing light availability in ancient than in recent forests. Furthermore, we found greater decreases in herb cover with increased nitrogen deposition in ancient forests, whereas warming had the strongest decreasing effect on the herb cover in recent forests. Interactive effects between land‐use history and global change on biodiversity were not found, but species evenness increased more in ancient than in recent forests. Synthesis. Our results demonstrate that land‐use history should not be overlooked when predicting forest herb layer responses to global change. Moreover, we found that herb layer composition in semi‐natural deciduous forests is mainly controlled by local canopy characteristics, regulating light levels at the forest floor, and much less by environmental changes at the regional scale (here: warming, nitrogen deposition and aridity). The observed disconnect between biodiversity and functional herb layer responses to environmental changes demonstrates the importance of assessing both types of responses to increase our understanding of the possible impact of global change on the herb layer.

    AbstractBiochar is more and more widely recognized as a promising agricultural amendment improving yield and ecosystem services in a range of different contexts. However, underlying mechanisms contributing to biochars benefits, notably biochar–root interactions, and their mediation by biochar's diverse properties remain unclear and poorly quantified. This study aimed to examine and quantify the interactions between biochar properties and plant traits and their effect on plant performance. To gain a better understanding of biochar–plant interactions and their role in biochar overall effects, biochars with contrasted physical and chemical properties were applied to soils during a 3‐month greenhouse experiment with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Barley biomass as well as several belowground morphological and physiological traits and aboveground traits related to nutrient acquisition were measured. A multivariate structural modeling approach was employed to quantify interactions between biochar properties and plant traits, and their feedback effect on plant biomass. Interactions between biochar chemical and physical properties and barley carboxylate release rate and their contribution to biochar effects were underlined. Among the plant traits examined the release of carboxylate appears as the best proxy to plant biomass following biochar addition, highlighting sparsely reported interactions between total carboxylate release rates and biochar ash content. Multivariate structural modeling offered elements of understanding for the complex interconnected mechanisms involved in biochar influence and their relative contribution. Adopting this approach across a wide range of species and contexts could contribute to ensure more reliable biochar benefits.
